I've been depressed for a while but watching this somehow cheered me up it makes me happy to know I have billions of guardian angels living inside me and it shows me that my own body loves me and protects me how strange 🥰

And yet we still question the existence of a creator. The logic and intelligence we find in nature is so incredible, it is impossible to think that we are just merely a product of an explosion. Think of the most complex structure ever built by human hands, now try and buy into the idea that some day a similar structure will be developed and constructed in the far future without any intelligent intervention.

As someone with two immune disorders (one of which is actively destroying my liver and one that *has* destroyed my colon) these videos are both interesting and horrifying. I don't really like hearing how scientists need to figure out one of biologys most complex systems to find a "cure" for my conditions.

Make one more immune system video, please. I love these videos. Even though they don't cover the whole thing, they explain the concept pretty well, which is what everyone needs. The best thing is that you guys are contributing to the open-source. That's a very good thing you do.

i can wholeheartedly say that Immune is an amazing book. most books written by Youtubers are just physical recaps of everything in videos, but with Immune, the already made videos arent even close to describing the book. Immune is really easy to understand and grasp with the very accurate analogies

Imagine if you will, a character who has the ability to drastically enhances the speed and potency of its immune system and other systems of your body. Recognizing threats and the necessary proteins needed that took a fraction of a second to do. It sounds a nerdier way of saying regeneration but the science and the logic behind it is amazing

I think the best way for the immune system to work would be if it were controlled by the brain. For example, you would tell killer T cells to stop using a particular protein cancer cells are waving as flags that say 'im a cuvilian' to recognise civilian body cells. Also, there should be two parts of the adaptive immune system, the current one and another one. It will involve sets immune cells specially suited against SPECIFIC DISEASES. Some people are immune against, for example, HIV. If we were infected by this disease, we should have a very specific set of immune cells without the weaknesses our normal immune system has in fighting HIV. These sets of cells should be like a whole immune system optimised like HIV was the only disease in the world. Also, why isn't our adaptive immune system on all the time? B cells always making antibodies, Killer T cells scanning for disease.Then we'd almost NEVER get sick. Well it's now a possibility with genetic engineering.

Fantastic video but the one question I have is if there is a way for the thymus to instruct T cells to self destruct how come bacteria can’t evolve these same instructions? further how come they can’t only use proteins that are recognized as body systems to fly under the radar? The book sounds very interesting and I may have to buy it and see if these questions can be answered.

I love how the title of this video and the contents of their most recent video completely contradict each other. We aren't immune by any means to Naegleria fowleri, but at least we technically do have the blueprint for antibodies against it. It just so happens that those antibodies are ineffective.. along with everything else..

Great book. Just noticed an error on page 13. It says all the blood vessels and capillaries are 10,000 miles long —three times the circumference of Earth. More accurate would be three times the radius of Earth. I love how you make these concepts more intuitive by comparing their size to familiar things in the world outside .

Your videos never fail to amaze me, but this video is on another level. Is the pinnacle of science divulgation, something that scientists should aim for. I've been a doctor for more years than I care to remember, and this is, without doubt, the best explanation I've seen of how the immune system works. The hints about hypervariable regions, HLA antigens and genetic recombination are irresistible. I've always found the immune system to be utterly fascinating, and so I'm looking forward tremendously to reading the book - which I've just ordered. You guys are the best.

@Calango Seco Ah, I live in the US. healthcare isn’t free here, and can be very expensive especially for treating stuff like cancer. Some people can’t afford to go to the doctor yearly, and some people can’t afford mental help either. That’s part of the reason why I got mad at you for telling everyone to just be healthy by exercising or getting more sleep. There’s also the fact that a lot of job shifts can take more than half a day long, and the fact that you have to wake up early for school, so getting little sleep is very common.

@FAIRY I live in Brazil, here there is the Unified Health System, it is very slow but you can get care for many health problems, including cancer, for free.

@HT L The funny thing is that Kurzgesagt themselves pointed this out in their "we lied to you" video, in that their videos are really just a primer to get people interested in the topic and to give a broad overview of the subject. They're meant as a complement, not a replacement, to formal education that can fill in all the details and complexity that a 10 minute video simply can't contain.

Comments like this pop up everywhere and I never get the argument. I mean, this is easy because it only presents the most superficial concepts in a very simplified manner. For every piece of information given, there are almost always a multitude of "why"s and "how"s left unanswered and unexplained, and you only need to takes a glance at their list of source materials to realize just how much detail was omitted in the first place. Again, videos like this do an excellent job at raising awareness and piquing interests, but unless you follow it up with some actual studying and digging (which certainly won't be anywhere as easy) these are just fun trivia at best. There is no comparison with a proper education.

True The school system isn't very effective, from what I currently understand students don't really remember the things we learn in school. And as a addition- The subjects school teaches aren't important at all unless you specifically wanna specialized in a subject. I've been watching videos on the same subjects in school- And somehow enjoy those subjects much more watching a video that I'm actually curious about I hope the school system changes, I'll probably be out of school by then if/when it does lol

Genetic code is not a DNA or genetic sequence. Genetic code is like English-French dictionary, which tells to Ribosomes how to create protein base on given genetic sequence. Three out of four Nucleobases (Adenine (A), Cytosine (C), Guanine (G), [Thymine (T) Please remember about Ribosomes and a difference between DNA and genetic code. Thanks guys, Love you guys :)
