This game needed 16GB RAM and 40% of my CPU to run on low graphics.
I lasted 3 and a half hours before the strain on my PC, and my mental health, was too much.
Combat is dire, quests are nonsensical, optimisation is non-existant.
This might just be one of the worst GAMES, never mind MMO specific games, currently on Steam.
Thanks to my Patreon supporters and Twitch subs for making these videos possible.

Hello Josh! On the ability order...Looks like the creator (almost!) used the stat order from the original version of Dungeons and Dragons and the 1st edition of Advanced Dungeons and Dragons (~1980). At that time the order was Strength, Intelligence, Wisdom, Dexterity, Constitution, Charisma. Not sure why they swapped Constitution and Dexterity in this game. The more common order of Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, Charisma began in AD&D version 2.
Vor 2 years@Glazius7 +25
The original original version does it Strength, Intelligence, Wisdom, Constitution, Dexterity, Charisma. This is because the three available human classes are Fighting-Man, Magic-User, and Cleric, which have prime requisites matching the first three attributes. Constitution is something that affects everyone's hit points, so it comes next, and Dexterity and Charisma are more situationally useful elements so they come later. When the Thief class is added later on, its prime requisite is Dexterity, so that moves up to the "prime requisite" section of the attributes, resulting in the order you've noted.

4:08 STR, INT, WIS, CON, DEX, CHA was the order of the ability scores in original D&D. 3rd edition changed the order in order to group the physical and mental stats together. Strength was the primary ability of the Fighting-Man (later Fighter), Intelligence was for Magic-Users (later Wizards), and Wisdom was for Clerics; the three original class of the game. Constitution, Dexterity and Charisma was useful for all classes, but not strictly necessary--sort of like bonus abilities.

Vor 2 years@mojpiesto +1
4:15 I believe the reason why the attributes are grouped the way they are is because they used to be group that way in older D&D editions. As to why they were grouped like that in that game, it was because Strength Intelligence and Wisdom were sort of primary attributes for the playable classes, that is to say Fighter, Magic-User and Cleric respectively. 28:25 "What the hell is up with the light rays coming from the windows at random angles?!" This is something you see fairly often when someone who is new to 3D modeling tries to model game assets, or when you're using a questionable compiler to convert models from the modeling software to the ingame format. To explain it simply, a 3D model is made up of points in 3D space called "vertices". When you connect two vertices together you form an "edge" which is basically just a line between vertices. If you connect 3 or more edges together in a loop you get a "face", which makes up the "skin" of the model that you're creating. Your model is made up of many many of those faces or "polygons". Those lines or "light rays" as you call it happen when you connect too many edges and faces to the same vertice. That's bad. You never want one vertice to have more than 4 edges connected to it. Basically the lighting portion of the 3D software gets confused and doesn't really know what to do, so it produces these lines in the model that mess up it's appearance. It's considered a form of artifact or glitch/bug in the model. If you look closely you can see that each of the "light rays" converge on a nearby point. What you're seeing is the edges creating distortions in the model, and the point of convergence is the single vertice that they're connected to. It's a common mistake with new modelers and it's completely fixable or preventable, and really any serious or even halfway decent hobby modeler learns how to make models without these glitches eventually. They kind of have to or they don't have a job. But since this game is made by a completely new and very inexperienced developer it's not all that surprising to see it.

Im pretty active in a lot of game dev circles. Im an aspiring one myself and I live with a professional game dev, and we have lots of friends within those circles. and one thing I see happen a LOT is that there are so many newbie wannabe game devs who only have about a year or less worth of game coding experience who just want to make their own MMOs. for some baffling reason a lot of inexperienced programmers and designers just immediately want to start their first project with an MMO. and often times they come around asking extremely basic questions, and we keep giving them the same answer every time. "if you need to ask basic questions like this and have never completed a game before, then you really shouldn't be attempting to make an MMO". and of course thats not what they wanna hear, so they keep pushing forward until they hit a wall and give up, or release unfinished broken garbage like Dreamscapes Dimensions. for anyone reading this who is interested in making their own MMO, Im really sorry to break this to you, but your over ambitious WoW killer MMO isnt ever going to be good if your entire team consists of just five people or less. the best you can hope for is to make something small and simple like Minecraft or Adventure Quest or Runescape, but anything more advanced than those and you'll be biting off way more than you can chew. get some basic games under your belt first before you attempt anything bigger so you can get a good feel of how things are done. it'll help you get a good idea of scope, and know what your limits are.

I think the high CPU and RAM is because the game is probably loading every asset at once. Prime example of this is that you can see the world below the character creation screen. Also when increasing the graphics the RAM usage shoots up. More quality = bigger file size = more RAM usage where its loading everything. Steam is generally pretty good at removing malware and crypto mining games so this is the only thing I can think of to defend the high usage. Or it could be a crypto but I would like to think its just loading files. RAM disk best disk

Things like the ability to actually sit in chairs or light/snuff lights, the soundtrack, the music system, several of the environments, the approach to the player's place in the world's lore, player territory sieges that actually matter, the skill systems... The problem is the game is trying to smooth ALL edges and you're seeing the triangles where this goes wrong. It's just how phong works and totally normal. The fix would be simple: limit the phong angle, so you actually get some hard edges. You learn that in the first few hours of 3D modelling and it's nothing more than entering a numeric value.

I think they should have chosen tab target w/ auto attack for combat And probably change the common endurance/ mvpoint usage system (for movement and siills but not attack) common in MUD type of game Though i havent played the MUD game that its based on , it looks like it using the same mechanic of it For the resources i dont know how that can be feels like the server is running locally plus rendering the game

Regarding the heavy resource use, my first thought is just that it's extremely poorly optimized because it screams Yandere Simulator levels of performance and if this is a team's first "production ready" game and they are using something like Unity without understanding how it works under the hood (not disparaging them or anything because I know nothing as well). If it were a miner, a smarter implementation would be to promote leaving the game on (or install something that runs even when the game is closed) and then run in the background once you leave the keyboard alone for a certain amount of time
Vor 2 years@Skylancer727 +2
Based on the CPU demand I think it might be that the game is using software rendering like old 90s games before GPUs took off. Only way I could explain it needing so much CPU power as even mining on my CPU doesn't use that much RAM.

The stamina thing reminds of an Epic NPC Man sketch about pay-to-win MMOs where the final punchline was the player couldn't move because they'd run out of steps, and had to purchase more from the shop. I remember thinking at the time that it was funny, but so ridiculous that it could never happen in a real game.
Vor year@SwiftNimblefoot
The "attacking costs stamina but attacks take stamina" system is one of the worst ideas ever. Sadly, Arcanum had this too.

Josh, do Tibia next, hear me on this one: I know you often mention it as classic game, a pioneer in certain aspects, but in my opinion the game is a shell of what it used to be. While it has grown into a fan-favorite of a very niche community, it is, without a doubt, a microtransaction hellhole. This, in turn, has attracted masses of ill-intentioned players, many of which operate in what I would describe as cartels, with a lot of real life money involved. It is my childhood mmorpg, and it wrecks my heart to see it as it is now. It had potential to grow into something special, but it's been ruined and it's only getting worse. I'd love to hear your analysis on the game

I'm assuming somebody already mentioned this before now, but the reason they use that order of stats is that that was how the stats were arrayed in Basic D&D, way way way back in the 70's. It wasn't until AD&D that they went into the physical/mental split.

Vor year@UnityMMODevelopers +2
DreamScapes uses the uMMORPG version 1 addon for Unity. It's a highly customized version of it though. The reason you can't jump or fall off ledges is because movement is based on Unity's NavMesh agent which must be kept on the NavMesh. The uMMORPG Component edition uses true Physics based Movement so you can jump, swim, fall of ledges, all the things you would expect. Also yes the reason for the high memory consumption is because everything is loaded at the start of the game. There is no terrain paging or anything.

Vor 2 years@yomi4853
I think the lag and high PC usage is because those are Unity assets with lots of polygons that are not optimized by the devs so maybe that's one of the reasons it is lagging hard.
Vor 17 Tage@theTweak0284
@Josh Strife Hayes, I would suggest installing a Virtual Machine for games that need you to disable your antivirus like that to mitigate the potential security risks (may not just be a bitcoin miner and especially if you download outside of Steam) You will see a performance hit and it may be too choppy depending on your hardware but just so you know the option exists if you have a decent CPU.

The post enlightenment building. The light coming from the windows are in fact issues with the normals/polygons on the model. It is the perfect indicator that whoever made that has no idea how they make models. You would be able to see that in the 3D software, and then again when it is added and textured, so I'm sort of amazed by the lack of QA, haha
Vor year@AunCollective +26
We have DreamScape Dimensions coming up on our list of games to check out. I'll see what the game files are doing re: the CPU, GPU & RAM. Like you said, it seems way too high to just be an issue of it being poorly optimized.

Vor 2 years@sinine1100 +13
I once wrote a 3D browser animation that almost set my laptop on fire simply by not being frame-capped*. Trust me, you can ALWAYS write things poorly enough to use all resources. Load entire map/all assets in at once is all that's required, more often than not. *That was in second year of university, graphics course, quite a few years ago.
Vor 2 years@Elenrai
@@sinine1100 ah, so your the guy responsible for the gandalf meme?
Vor year@minac2503
I think the game is made in Unity, and if so then the game will use as many resources as it possibly can, if a targeted FPS has not been set. (The developer sets a targeted FPS, lets say 90, and when the game reaches 90 FPS it will stop attempting to achieve higher fps, lowering the amount of resources it uses.)
Vor 2 years@chinundercover
The high memory usage is most likely the engine loading all assets and keeping them loaded, while also not supporting occlusion culling, which means it's keeping everything around you that your camera doesn't see rendered and in-memory. These are generally longer-term performance tuning features that are provided by engines, and not necessarily something you'd throw in the engine in the first iteration. Based on everything I can tell, this is a custom game engine. I wouldn't assume that the performance is based on mining, it's probably just a poorly optimized engine. The fact that the dev team went from creating and managing a long-standing Text-Based MUD, to writing their own engine (again, I'm assuming) and getting this far with it is amazing. Even better is that this game, according to the game's forums, still gets updates WEEKLY!. I don't think Josh gave this game a fair shake. He's usually much more understanding and reasonable regarding smaller dev teams and the complexities of creating an MMO. While it will probably forever remain a bad game, the amount of progress that the dev team has made on what could be chalked up to a hobby project is a fair bit, I'd say. Josh - if you read this, you should do an update and try speaking with the devs on a call and seeing what's-what. My sneaking suspicision is that they're not trying to be malicious.
