I might upgrade my car horn to this.

Watch the What's Inside video here: de-film.com/v-video-d9tA1icDPGY.html

Here is a behind the scenes video from the day: www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJIc1...

ELI20 version: I answered why you want a large outlet area but not necessarily why it curves like that. Anytime you have a sudden change in cross-sectional area in the horn you will get waves reflecting back at the source. You don't want that because that is wasted energy that could have moved forward. Even if it goes from a small cross-section to a larger, if you do it suddenly you get those wasted waves. So you want the horn to basically be asymptotic at the exit so you never have a jump in discontinuity when it exits to the wide open air. So a directors cone isn't as good as the curved shapes I showed because it still has the sudden change when it dumps into the open air.

Summary: I made a huge horn and broke glass with it and explored why horns are shaped the way they are.

I know this is a years-old video, but I really want to say it's ultra-groovy how you involve the kids in your family in your videos. It means so much, growing up, to have adults in your life who make you feel involved, appreciated, sharing in the coolness of discovery. I just spoke with my folks over the weekend, and they lamented mistakes they feel they made when raising me--but I sincerly only remember singing, guitar, watching sci-fi, holidays, awful puns, board games, science projects, etc... These "mistakes" they remember are tiny compared to the positive experiences.

Mark I really hope that you can keep doing things that are entertaining and educational for as long as you live. You really are the best, and thanks for teaching things so much better than a teacher

Wind has a HUGE impact on sound as well. I've been to concerts at The Gorge in Washington where you can hear the band perfectly, but as the wind kicks up their sound literally gets blown away.

Other than allowing the air to be compressed, the horn also has a boundary effect which gives a lift of 6db when reflections meet in phase. The horn also acts a wave guide which propagates the wave in a forward direction.

Deeply inspired by your ongoing work. I would like to see, in this video - to extra credit the horn technology - a baseline comparison, which should be the small diaphragm that makes the sound, without the horn extension.
