Hi guys! Ajax want to play a possession/positional total football, yet they managed to dominate second balls against Madrid like a gegenpressing team, let's see how this worked! Hi Piotr, another great analysis of a very important tactic. Winning the second ball and pressing when the ball is lost are two extremely potent off-the-ball moves when implemented properly. I am curious, what software do you use to draw the formations seen at 1:10 to 1:40?

I think another example for this is Liverpool's last season match against Man City on champions league, City players try to attack from both flank but those 2nd ball was decisive for Liverpool because every time LFC players win the ball no City players fast enough to keep up with Salah or Mane

The recovery shape is awesome plus they don't chase around pointlessly. The wait for the ball drop point then sprint. The covering is good too. Plus dominate the aerial seems to be the key. They have great concentration. Teamwork is already world class but I know it is tiring to keep that level of concentration without stopping. Mentally fatigue will kicks in first than physicals.

The problem is when the opposition has 2 forwards, one get the ball by a trough ball and runs in the opposit direction of the other making the defense far a part, then there is a overload of opposition players inside Ajax's box. The perfect tactic to beat ajax in my opinion is a 4 4 2 that aims to score trough trough balls.

Vor 6 Monate
Lorenzo Ancheselli
Lorenzo Ancheselli

T3KKANッ exactly. Ajax tends to get people in the middle when attacking and their fullbacks overlap creating space. I would aim to counter-attack them with trough balls to both of the fullbacks backs, then it would be a duel against their central defenders coming out of position to cover the fullbacks thus creating more space or even a 1v1 on ajaxs box for my number 9 to have better chances with a cross, be it high or low

@Duy Linh Chu Ha If you're comparing Mourinho's tactics against this you really need to rethink your knowledge and appreciation of the game. Mourinho did it too with Porto but it wasn't a masterclass. These boys are teaching football while doing it. 4-1 Real, Juve away, Bayern two times and most of those matches they outplayed teams with 5 times their budget. Mourinho used his almost unmatched ability to rally players and crowd to overturn a 4-1 loss from Milan if I'm not mistaken. Both to be applauded but one is pure fucking art

@bordof milani Both teams play 4-3-3. You're talking about Real adjusting their tactics at home to match Ajax. You either run more if the other team has better players or in Real's case, make sure your experience and better quality shines through. They thought they had better quality throughout all positions which simply wasn't the case. If this Ajax team stayed as it is for 2-3 more years without players getting frustrated, they could have replicated this time and time again

@Y 19 Yeah money doesn't matter. Teams like Madrid, Bayern, PSG, Man City etc. don't buy there teams. These teams all grow on trees. You just have to pick the right tree. Right. If money doesn't matter why can't Ajax keep there team together? The richest teams are not always the best but the teams who are poor do not often win the CL. How is that? Money is 8 out of 10 the reason that a teams win an important price. But i love it when there are exceptions to the rule see Leicester and Ajax. @Creeppizza PSV lost the last match with 3 -1 against Ajax while ajax were playing with then men and Ajax are currently number one in the league..PSV plays like a scared little boy..they score shitty goals in the last minutes against poor teams and blay lousy football. AJAX were getting their act together the last few years, saving money, building a better foundation for the future..last year one of their biggest talents, who dropped down on the pitch with a heart attack causing brain damage. The year before that they reached the EL league final which led to a lot of lost points in the league. PSV on the otherhand never achieves anything in Europe. Ajax are in the cupfinal, still in Europe and dominating the league, scored more then a 100 goals. AJAX will dominate the league for the next 10 years again.

@Bo Kombrink Wrong again. That is classic Real Madrid. You expect us to lose cuz yall hate us. Real Madrid knows how grind out a win against tough opposition and don't mind being dominated. Once we get our chance the opposition will. We win by any means. The coach played the same squad in 3 matches, and madrid looked nothing like they did in the first leg.

Piotr, whats the difference between a second strike, a false 9 and a number 10?

Vor 7 Monate
ForRealSun 77
ForRealSun 77

Number 10 is not a striker, it is an offensivd midfielder. A true 10 is the main playmaker and chance creator. False 9 is what Messi played for Barca before Suarez came, i.e. he was not completely at the front but kind of dropped off, essentially this type of striker's role is to create spaces, which either he can use or the wingers can run into. George explained perfectly what a second striker is. In essence a second striker is a false 9 with another striker that is more of a true 9 (he always tries to present himself in the penalty area: classic striker). A second striker makes sense if you prefer a classical striker to be the goal oriented vs having 2 wingers. An example for a second striker would be how Dybala sometimes played together with Higuain last season or how Müller sometimes played with Luca Toni and later Lewandowski with Ribery and Robben as wingers.

Vor 6 Monate
Saxarubra
Saxarubra

As far as I can, I'll try to explain: A second striker is someone who plays most likely outside the box WITH a teammate who stays/plays in it. You can see this kind of player in a 2 striker-system (not so much used in the great teams nowadays). I think the most famous actually is Griezmann (who plays behind/next to Diego Costa/Morata). A false 9 is a striker who plays outside the box WITHOUT a teammate who stays/plays in it: here the wingers are the ones who come in. You can see it quite only in a particular 4-3-3 formation. Tadic against Real Madrid played as a false 9. A numer 10 is much more a philosophical concept: he's the skilled one, the man who makes the difference. He can be an offensive regista, a technical wing, a good runner or the one who plays between the lines. There are so many definition and possibilities that we need to think about it as a concept, an idea much more than a role. I hope I answered

Vor 6 Monate

@George Rockey Id say a number 10 is a midfielder that gets behind the defense when a striker doesnt or plays through when a striker goes deep

Vor 7 Monate
IlFaraone92
IlFaraone92

@George Rockey Pretty spot on tbh

Vor 7 Monate
George Rockey
George Rockey

I personally see the three roles as quite similar yet the main thing to do is what sets them apart. A second striker (I see this as a striker that's deeper) is meant to make runs past the main no. 9 into the space behind, as he hasn't been picking up by one of the CBs. The false 9 is someone who drops off both CBs, so they have a choice not to mark anyone or follow the false 9 and make space for wingers/midfielders, useful for a more possession based game. A number ten is more of a creator, not asked to move a whole lot or run about but to sit in the space and find through balls into players further ahead of him. As I said they are similar positions, but the main task in each role is how they differ. Hope this helps!
