Why You Should Want Driverless Cars On Roads Now

How close are we to having fully autonomous vehicles on the roads? Are they safe? In Chandler, Arizona a fleet of Waymo vehicles are already in operation. Waymo sponsored this video and provided access to their technology and personnel. Check out their safety report here: waymo.com/safety/

I hope to one day be able to tell kids that we used to drive cars ourselves and they'll just go 👁️👄👁️

I'd love to see blind experiments with these. Where people are given a ride, either human-driven or autonomous and at the end of the ride they have to rate the ride and guess whether there was a driver or not.

I feel like a majority of cars in general could be removed if we just designed our cities and towns better to make it that walking, cycling, and/or taking reliable public transit is all we need in order to get from one place to another.

I've always admired veritasum videos and watched them as independent opinion. My question is: if Derek thought something was wrong, would it be on the video? It is sponsored by Waymo, I assume that they had to aprove it right? Did they write the script? I just ask.

this is a very informative ad. to be a scientific video it would need to include at least some experts on traffic or scientists who study the basic principles of driverless cars and what are the pros and cons of the used technology and not just the head of a company that makes money with selfdriving cars.

This needs to be tested in places like Nashville or equivalent congested areas.

He got almost everything about airplanes wrong. When planes do full auto land the separation between the landing planes is 2-3 times greater than when manually landing which results in 2-3 times less capacity for other landing traffic. Therefore most landings are manual while full auto land is only used for low visibility procedures.

Here is a decision I make all the time when I'm driving: if I see a car having trouble staying in its lane, I assume the driver is distracted/texting. So I will be more careful around that car and if the road is narrow, maybe wait to pass them until I can give them a little more room and do it quickly. I'll avoid driving alongside that car. Or if a car is tailgating me aggressively, I'll predict that the same car is going to try to pass me and maybe cut me off dangerously, so I'll keep a closer eye on them and give them a little more space.

I'm a pilot and I often hear people worried about the safety of automation in airplanes. They don't understand that a accident may happen due to bad programing, but once the machine learned that thing, it will never happen again. You can teach humans basic stuff and sometimes they will still made that same mistake. Its like we have a percentage of fail chance, as we can see in the numbers of car accidents, while the machine, after you teach her that thing, it will never fail that thing again.

I think autonomous vehicles increase the quality of life for most drivers/passengers by making things safer and less stressful. Not to mention that when one makes a mistake, they will all learn from it

I don't mean to knock it at all, it's pretty cool, but wouldn't it have a lot of dangers on the cyber-level? I also feel trains and other public transport kind of make this a little less impressive. One giant engine carrying a bunch of people seems better for both efficiency, safety and the environment.

I’m really curious how they handle in scenarios where a human is directing traffic. That is, when police are directing traffic around a crash or workers are directing traffic through an area with road work

For me it's clear that in city centers, as more cars become autonomous, the quality of autonomy would improve as the IoT on the road grew in connection points. The greatest concern for me would be the security involved with the companies controlling perhaps hundreds of vehicles (and even more human lives) at a time. Both the on site security and network security would be the make or break for me.

I'm not sure humans are better, what we do have is exceptional pattern recognition and individual experience.

When we were in the office, we had people taking Waymo to the office on a occation. Really cool to see. I lived in Glendale and commuted to Chandler, so I couldn't try it out, but it was cool to see other people did.

Being someone who lives in a Midwest climate that fluxuates between warm summers and cold winters, it is clear to me that it isn’t the cars that need to be improved anymore for this to work, it is now the roads.

Honestly I'd trust a self-driving car a lot more than a lot of the elderly people I've been driven by, they're Terrifying

It really interests me until the point of where I imagine having to get in and actually trust it. In my mind I have this reasoning that the technology probably is quite trustworthy and accurate, and probably superior to humans in many way. But something about it terrifies me.
