ok a engineering pioneer, but do I want to have the same seat space, with more people around me? shoving more people in a plane with no gain in passenger comfort and longer lines and longer boarding times? . Then a two engine liner can can do the same thing with less cost.

The Airbus A380 was NOT a failure, the airlines are the one that fails all the time! Also, your comments about Airbus predictions on long haul, well most of that information comes from the airlines, they are the one who tells the aircraft maker what they want and what they see in the future.

I lived in Singapore for 10 years and took a lot of flights on the A380. It's smooth, spacious, and beautiful, inside and out. I hope that it remains in service on those super crowded routes.

4:10 False. You failed to tag Boston Logan International Airport which absolutely does accomodate the A380 with 2017 Terminal E expansions, and was in fact the first airport to do so in the whole Northeast, even before New York JFK.

Glossed over in this video … Boeing elected to not produce a massive aircraft (A380 sized)—because they correctly predicted that their 757, 767, and 777 would destroy the hub-and-spoke system that the A380 needed.

Sales wise yes it is a failure. A decade and already it is headed to the scrap yard. If this aircraft was built in the mid 90’s it would have been a better competitor to the 747 400 instead the push for twin engine long haul fuel sipping aircraft was what the airlines wanted. The other problem is it needs a major modification to be able to carry the cargo load of the 747. That’s why the upper deck flight deck works for the 747.

I flew from the UK to New Zealand and back again in 2008 and 2010 with my dad (and sister in 2008) to visit cousins out there. The A380 was quite new at the time and still attracted people wanting to see it take off and land. All our flights were first class, but it was only the 2010 where we flew in the A380. You’re right about not many airports being able to accommodate them! We flew from Newcastle to Dubai with Emirates on a two class plane, changing to the A380 after an overnight stop. We had to stop at Melbourne (I think for refuelling) and enjoyed the peace and quiet of Emirates 1st class lounge, having been pre-cleared for customs. Boarding once again, we flew to Auckland and after a few days, on to Christchurch. Coming home, it was Air New Zealand to Auckland and then a flight to Australia on a non A380 and a change at Sydney. Flying home via Dubai (where we had to change to a smaller plane) was really great as after changing into Emirates pyjamas the rest of first class were asleep and I spent a couple of hours in the bar with some guys in business class. It was weird, sitting in a bar drinking just as if you were enjoying an evening out at hone, except the the drinks were free and you were at 38k feet (wearing first class pyjamas). The bar is situated between business and first on the upper deck. There were 2 showers in first class, which wasn’t organised too well, as people were newfangled with them and Emirates allowed both toilets to be used for showers, meaning anyone wanting to use the toilet had to find one elsewhere! One of the advantages of having a cubicle with a bed, was the privacy you had. With the doors closed and the partition up, you could close off the other people onboard. We even had twinkling stars on the ceiling! I didn’t miss not having a window seat, as we had views from numerous cameras. I was able to look at one mounted on the tail which gave a great view of the landing and there was another that gave a view of what the pilots could see. I would love to travel on the A380 again, although first class for one of its longest journeys was *very* expensive.

You know it was a failure alot earlier when Airbus said it was designed to carry more than the 747 to help "relieve congestion" at airports. The 380 leaves behind a large wake(turbulance) so that they loose 1 plane slot to let the wake dissipate. 747 doesn't do this. If congestion was really a problem, 2 747's in 2 time slots vs 1 380 takeoff + 1 lost time slot due to wake would handle more passengers than the time slot loss to 1 380 flight.

Well, the A 380 is an amazing airplane, however, the main reason it was built was a wrong decision. It was built to beat Boeing's 747, at least this has been one of the reason. That it did not turn out that way is not only the price, the unbelievable cost of maintenance, the infrastructure needed at the airport, but also the things the things that have and still are going on around the world. But it has always been a major factor in beating Boeing. As we can see, it somewhat backfired.

I did 3 around the world tripsnusing hub and spoke, 2 with 747 and 1nwith Airbus a380. A380 was better but more limited. Still a great plane and quite different than any other plane. I thought the idea was never going to last but the last spasm proved to create an eye popping aircraft.

An amazing Aircraft, I flew with Malaysian Airlines, from London to Kuala Lumpur in 2014 on route to Melbourne. It's like being on a ship, it's more like a ship than a plane. If people were smart enough this plane would have a future. My trust in Boeing is entirely gone now after all their recent issues. You get what you pay for. They don't mention that over 500 people have already died on the 777, where the A380 has a perfect record. Boeing is just about the bottom line, not so much wether you live or die.

After watching your video it became clear why it failed. However, I can say flying on the A380 was the best experience I've ever had. Spacious, comfortable, smooth. Furthermore, I had the unfortunate possibility of comparing both "monsters" back-to back. I flew A380 from Auckland to Singapore and after a 5 hour stopover, boarded a 777 nightmareliner, oops, dreamliner to Zurich. Cramped, hard-rock seats, faulty entertainment systems, awkward seats and toilets...a true nightmare. It is a shame to know there will be no more planes like the A380 for the time being.
