This is a story of the Duke class frigate of the Royal Navy also known as Type 23. The Falklands war changed the design of the frigate from focusing on anti submarine warfare to more of well rounded warship. #shorts

So they designed a combat ship with barely any anti aircraft capability in an age where planes can deliver anti ship missiles hundreds of miles away....It may be a frigate but that little thing is still a target in times of war or conflict.

Royal Navy: Harpoon system Russian Navy: Dual CWIS
Vor MonatUnBearified Bear
*CIWS (close-in weapon system) - Not CWIS ...While it is pronounced "Sea-whiz", it isn't spelled that way - but its a completely reductive statement anyway, one could just as easily say; _Russian Navy: Sunburn ASM_ _Royal Navy (and _*_many_*_ others): CIWS_ Out of interest, have you any first hand experience of Phalanx type systems? Know how long their ammo lasts, how the system is reloaded or how long that takes? ...and that's not even mentioning the fact that with the Systems drawbacks, if you're going to "logistically" support a Dual Turret, it is far more defensively effective and economical to station them individually (although perhaps the Russian System fires from one """barrel""" and then from the other while the first cools and/or is being rearmed, or perhaps one is kept redundant in the event of malfunction with the other?) just because they "can" operate both at once, doesn't mean they _would_ in an active engagement.. would be very 'expensive' for not very much more benefit.. one wall of lead tends to be enough

@DeadlyPotato Hot shit, thanks for the info. Yep, I pulled up a stack of pics, and that bird is substantial! Be well. (Edited for typos. The Devil is in the details.) Egh, had to answer your question of it's function. This is what Wiki says: Anti-submarine warfare, medium-lift transport, search and rescue and utility helicopter So yeah, like you said, support. I'll leave you alone now.

It is the AW101 merlin naval (support??) hrlicopter And to call it a small helicopter is just not true tbh. Especially when the ‘wildcat’ helicopter exists

Vor 2 MonateUnBearified Bear
@jorge chichiri how about an Argentina "so powerful", it couldn't train, supply or feed its *conscript army* who largely surrendered because they were in *no shape* to fight? How about you follow you're own advice and study the history of the conflict and ask why, if such a just and noble cause, those men and boys were given *no chance* against the inevitable retaliation from Britain Act like a patriot because you want to call a place you'll never visit "Malvinas" while fundamentally misunderstanding and insulting the memories of every single Argentine man and boy your fickle Government made to suffer and die there Ignorance is *bliss*

Wish they had Goalkeeper or Phalanx CIWS system on the rear so it wouldn't look too empty
Vor 2 MonateStephen Gomez
It's crazy to think that they could build that big ship the first time and not have any anti-aircraft defenses on it, I mean even since world war I and world war II ships were being bombed by airplanes it would have been like common sense to have an anti-aircraft gun on there.

No. They planned they'd be part of a NATO fleet and were built with a "role" in mind. Had they all had CIWS systems the Argentinian attacks in Bluff Cove would have been toast. That was the other lesson they learned.

Not true, Argentina did not attack a British colony, the British invaded an Argentinian Island as it is not sustainable to live in but it’s a great strategic spot for military base. Facts metter
Vor 2 MonateCo.11
@Xellos Blackforest is it still like that?
Vor MonatXellos Blackforest
@Skengman Add on :- When Argentinian troops invaded the Falklands, they found 1. The people that stay in Falklands chose to be British and part of the British Empire 2. The citizens had lost all Hispanic (and Argentinian) cultures and affiliations w any Latin American cultures. Languages was all in English. Roads and streets were even given British names. imagine this Argentinian soldier “Habla Espanol?" Falkland Elder “Anyone wants biscuits with tea?”.
Vor 2 MonateSkengman
The Falklands where a British colony and people did live there so I don’t know what your talking about sustainable to live, there were under 30 Royal Marines on that island when it was invaded by Argentinian forces, and Port Stanley was the capital, further more it was an act of aggression and was not an invasion by Britain, Argentina was just hoping Britain wouldn’t care enough to re claim it, Facts *matter

Vor 2 MonateJan Witts
Why weaponised ???? They are fing warships... It's only the deck gun that was added
Vor 2 MonateJan Witts
The support Fort ships were fitted for but not with missiles but could in fact not fire missiles even if they were fitted..
Vor MonatJan Witts
They were all to have sea wolf point defence missiles.. they just didn't have the installation footprint standardised by that time...
Vor MonatFougère des mers du sud
Some early projects of the T23 shows that the type may only have been eauiped with a 76mm gun, with the support ships mounting anti air missiles
Vor MonatJusuf Agung
If that ship is not weaponised, then it wouldn't be called a Frigate! It will be called a YACHT!
Vor 2 MonateA Quill and Scroll
Original air defence was meant to be provided by a tender/ solid support ship with sea wolf missiles with these class of ships in a pack of 4 hunting subs. They changed it so instead of a solid support/ tender providing air support, each ship had their own missiles instead of having to rely on ciws.
Vor 2 MonateP7 _X
Fun fact : the WW2 battleships, destroyers, cruisers...had more guns, less technology.
Vor 2 MonateFougère des mers du sud
Most of them weren't designed with efficient radar fire control and used VT fused shells quite late. VT fuses and missiles were game changers

@Rob Fraser that sounds like an even worse idea. Rely on a different ship for anti air
Vor MonatUnsubtle Major Dictator
@Rob Fraser sea wolf was crucial during the Falklands war.
Vor 2 MonateRob Fraser
Originally the Type 23's would normally be alongside much larger warships with greater anti-air capabilities but the days of cold war fleets is over, except for the US, so these little guys can no longer rely on being near a cruiser or destroyer and have to be able to fend for themselves.

Vor 2 MonateRob Fraser
Sonar, torpedoes and depth charges.
Vor 2 MonateTom Riley
The T23 still has space for a CIWS that was never fitted.
Vor 2 MonateTom Riley
@A Quill and Scroll Illustrious was completed quickly to relieve Invicible in September 1982 whilst the RAF Mount Pleasant Runway was being built, similarly the RAF's Vulcan tanker conversions didn't arrive until after the war. Even in World War 2 the Luftwaffe never got its heavy bomber and probably the most powerful industrial war effort in history - The US in World War 2 couldn't complete a battleship during the war even though they were laid down the day after Pearl Harbour - kind of makes my point that nearly always in terms of actual fleet warships you pretty much go to war with what you have not what you'd planned to have or can refit to improve in hostilites (HMS Hood for example)
Vor 2 MonateA Quill and Scroll
@Tom Riley My bad... I remember it as illustrious but since you say that, I think it was another one of the carriers that they completed quickly for falklands.
Vor 2 MonateTom Riley
@A Quill and Scroll doesn't happen in reality - Illustrious's completion was after the Falklands... there's always supposed to be time in reality it never happen, largely because if it was ways to avoid a war would have been implemented already
Vor 2 MonateA Quill and Scroll
@Tom Riley Not really phalanx and millenium gun is a bolt on system, even though the t23s are old, the recent refit will spare them enough power for said systems and said systems can easily be installed. Also do note even if there are escalations, we still have time, seeing as how shipyards could bring forward hms illustrious’ completion due to falklands war. An enemy will still have to manoeuvre and travel in which time many preparations can be made. Do not forgot MI6 performs the role of early warning, any enemy choosing to raise escalations will alert MI6, so unlikely for us to be caught with our trousers down for a large scale movement... only small movements such as salisbury were unavoidable.
Vor 2 MonateTom Riley
Yep, my point was it never happened.... I think the T23s did have the provision for deck penetration from Goalkeeper built into it, but as I said was never actually fitted. Unfortunately by the time of increased hostilities it's usually too late.
Vor 2 MonateJoe Higgins

Vor TagDale Hill
He said was designed to support a small heli, but obviously it can handle full size troop, cargo transport models as well, he's just the narrator, presenter, he reads a script or specs sheet he has, Ayuh
Vor MonatFougère des mers du sud
Probably because he wasn't reffering to Merlin when speaking about the "small helicopter" originally presented for the first lighly armed t23 project, but something smaller like a Lynx
