Why The Elevator Shaft Was Invented Before The Elevator

It sounds ridiculous, but it's true. At the Cooper Union Foundation Building in New York, there's the world's first elevator shaft: constructed four years before the safety elevator was invented. • Thanks to Prof. O'Donnell and all the team at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art: you can find out more about the building here: cooper.edu/about/history/foun...

If you're browsing YouTube in English (UK), then the title and description of this video will say "Lift": otherwise "Elevator". Unfortunately, I can't make the same changes to the video.

What should we be adding now? Charging stations for phones, electric cars and bicycles, negative pressure air conditioning, bigger/better filteration systems for air con, a power room for cold fusion generator, parking stations for automatic cars and for automatic lorrys and other parcel carrying system. Conveyor belts for parcels or dumb waiter shafts for package delivery. Replacement windows for solar panel glass, and green carbon catchment panels, micro-vibration dynamos, sway balls for those in earthquake zones, water tank at roof for a number of reasons one of which might be for a water battery the other for fire. drone or helicopter landing pads, outside drain pipes for watering "green walls". Radiation proof bunkers for extreme solar events, lead lined to stop most rays. Outdoor net holders or nets that can spring out to catch anyone falling off the side (suicide prevention or just accident proof), roof sensors for weather, relays for wifi, 4g, 5g, and other bands. Outdoor electrical and network ports for tv's and holographic projectors, whole floors dedicated to plants and open green house to allow for carbon offset of building and to stop building acting as wind breaks. Underfloor access like server rooms to allow for LCD panel floors (would need less room in roof). Roof habitat for local animals like falcons and eagles and greenery system to allow for some of their food to live their naturally like artificial river with frogs and fish and plants and bees. Recycling centre in the basement, with a compactor, the dumb waitors can feed into this, and organic waste can go back to the roof into a local composter. Power lines throughoutthe building using 12v lines instead of just mains. Network cable shafts between floors, but not single shaft but a few so they don't need to be shared

I would say wired connections are obvious for reliable and high speed connections but apparently despite being usable few homes have them... apparently everyone is fine with wifi despite it being slower and less reliable with latency spikes that makes wires look really nice... Perhaps the best thing we can design right now is passive security and safety measures so it's harder to be ambushed in a building or to break in.

Vor 2 Monate
Dalton
Dalton

@BonaparteBardithion I would have designed the homes to be upgraded. When phones were new they should have thought: "Hmmm lets put all the wires in one place so it's possible to put in whatever comes next." I would have run all the wiring in one channel such that it's easy to fix, maintain, replace, upgrade, and update as codes change. My home is 30+ years old, I have to run new wires all the time because we need wires because not everything has wireless and there are too many transmitters now in our area causing signal dropping and slowdowns. My new Wifi 6 router does help but only when no wifi 5 devices are on the same channel (which is never). Our wifi has been getting less buggy as our devices move to wires since that is less airtime needed for garbage like "i'm still alive" pings.

Vor 3 Tage
BonaparteBardithion
BonaparteBardithion

It's easy to accommodate for in newer houses. But I live in a hard-to-retrofit 100+ year old house. There's nothing wrong with the house itself, so wifi is just the more practical solution. Same thing with a 20 year old house. I do agree cable would technically be faster, but wifi is fast enough for most uses. You'd probably use a dedicated machine for gaming strong enough for signal to be a concern, so you'd hook that up to the limited lines.

Vor 3 Tage
Dalton
Dalton

@BonaparteBardithion power over ethernet is a missed opportunity in laptops. Could power and charge lower wattage units. Also when the home is unfinished its not hard to install cables. I use wifi to but I also use wires. My problem is how people think wifi it just better and also faster... it isn't. It sucks but we are stuck with it. I get the not tied to a wire thing. I use wifi too. But I use wires LOTS because when gaming I want low latency and I also want high speed for anything I'm sitting down for. Frankly having a network jack by half the power outlets would make it possible to have all the housemates using the cables at the same time in any room. Switches make one cable into many and they work great.

Vor 3 Tage
BonaparteBardithion
BonaparteBardithion

There's a reason wifi became so prominent even before mobile devices took off. Not every room has a phone jack and few people want to run network cables up and down a house. And then if you have laptop you end up needing to find a spot that's a) near the network cable b) near a power source (if needed) c) not in use by your other housemates
