Snatch Block! I want to take a moment to thank those of you who support Smarter Every Day on Patreon. I'd also like to point out 2 things about this video. #1. You'll notice Jeremy Fielding is in this video. He's the "Contraption Fabricator" that's started working with me now because of your support on Patreon. He's a great designer, father, and friend. You'll be seeing more of Jeremy around thanks to those who support at https://www.patreon.com/smartereveryday/ #2. If you'd like to 3D print the Snatch Blocks and pulleys we use in this video they are here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4022579 #3. I really enjoy KiwiCo and I think you will too. I got them as a Christmas gift for my children years ago, and it was a huge hit. It was after that experience that I reached out to their team and asked if I could advertise for them because of how good it was for our family. I think you'll enjoy it too. https://www.kiwico.com/smarter It was 3 things... I ended up pointing out 3 things.

Yes the tension adds up.. but the ratio difference is the real key here. What you trade in the form of extra length of rope pulled on the input side, you gain in the form of torque or lifting strength on the output side. Think of a transmission.

Hi Destin. Idk if you'll read this but i think you're the right person to talk to. I love in Tonga. There is a friend of mine who brought a garage door to install but there are pieces missing. I remembered this vudeo and was wondering of you could help me conjure up some way of using pulleys to open and close a garage door, hopefully with ease. Our resources are limited so we have to use them wisely. Well, i don't want to linger. Plz lmk if this is something that interests you. Looking forward to your reply.

fixed roll = directing the movement to an Angle of your Choice (no leverage impact) even if you now can use your Bodyweight . floating roll = doubles the Distance of the rope , by halving the needed force. lifting 10KG to 1 Meter (distance to pull the rope 1m , force needed 10 kg ) adding 1 floating roll to this setup > distance to pull rope 2m ,force needed 5 kg. and so on. As you may guess by adding more parts to a Setup , the Grinding-force I call it increase , wich means the calculation above will help you through mid school but isn't accurate enough for Ingeneers. Remind !! only the floating rolles work as leverage , learn to detect them (in most setups they are fix connected to the weight , and move Up/down with the weight together ;). count them and divide the weight by their sume .

I first saw Archimedes' pulley setup in the sixth episode of a Japanese show called Dr. Stone. If you love science, and are willing to suspend some disbelief for a rather absurd premise that places a modern day science prodigy into a world equivalent to the stone age, then I would recommend it! That being said this was a fun video to watch. It's amazing how simple mechanical principles can make a child like Hercules.

Pulleys are are definitely, extremely useful when they're needed. However, I can get your buddies truck on the trailer with two bricks and a rope. Pulleys not necessary. “Knowledge is power? Please stop with the Greekcentric revisionism. Archimedes did not come up with pulleys, levers or their mechanics. They were being used regularly as early as 3000 b.c in Mesopotamia. Carthage was also making heavy use of them to construct 200 whopping ships per month to invade Sicily where Archimedes resided.

One of the best examples of pullies is on sailing ships.. and if I remember correctly from the USS CONSTITUTION berthed in Baltimore.. crossing the lines in X configuration has a different type of additional force for the same distance traveled.. it's as if one foot of pull equals one foot of movement or lift.
