Russia and US have Different Naval Doctrines. US revolves around the Air Craft Carriers and it is more Offensive than Defense. Russia Operates on a few ships but packs a lot of weapons designed to be defensive. China just copy both...hehehehe!

you're describing a cruiser, not a destroyer dumbass, america is the most advanced navy in the world, we don't need 10,000 guns on one ship to take out 50 targets at once, cruisers aren't designed to be heavy guns like destroyers are, they're designed to be heavy tanked frigates that can hit short ranged targets offensively

American ships need longer legs. They need to cross oceans to get to their action theater. The Russians have a coastal defense Navy. So the space Americans need for food, fuel, spares, etc.... the Russians use for guns and ammo. They also have smaller ships, because for the same reason. There’s only so far your Baltic, Caspian, or Black Sea ships can go. All that other stuff is speculative, or ignores similar American problems, like the Bohnhomme Richard burning down last summer or the Gerald Ford taking 11 years to commission, or the failed LCS and DDX projects.

Learned back.l in the 70s at a Intel class the soviets put redundant weapon systems on their ships due to unreliability and technical expertise. Their enlisted rates were mostly short term conscripts who didn't get technical training. Only officers went to schools. Unlike the US Navy who rely on highly trained enlisted rates with many career professionals. If war broke out we could expect their tactic would be launching and firing everything at once hoping to overwhelm their adversary before their systems went done. Poor quality and parts added to their problems. Just my thoughts.

1 on 1 battles would never happen. Russia uses their fleet to defend their long coast lines, which means for a fight to happen the US would have to invade Russia (which is pointless). For that they would not send single ships but their large carrier strike groups. I think the only reason why there are so many more missiles on the Russian ships is the hope that if a carrier group would attack, they could send more missiles than the attackers can shoot down to at least render some of the carriers useless since the Russian airforce has much weaker planes (and air to air weapon systems) than the US.

Its really not fair to just compare one ship in its class from another country and say "oh this one is better". Same goes to guns in general. It really depends on the battle doctrine on the military uses on the battlefield. Maybe Russia prefers overwhelming firepower and heavily armoured well rounded ships that can fit any scenario, hence all the weapons on a single boat. The US loves its aircraft carriers and F35 roaming the skies. Who knows? Doubt both sides will disclose their actual strategy on the battlefield on the internet lmao.

I served as an EW2 Electronic Warfare Technician on the USS Iowa and USS Antietam. Couple of things the author didn't know or neglected to mention. The Tomahawk missile has had an anti-ship variant since 1989. In fact the USS Iowa in 4/1989 was scheduled to test a new method in tasking that if the tomahawk picked up a certain long range radar on Slava and Kirov class ships it would task itself to hunt for that ship. Turret 2 exploded on 4/19/1989 and we never tested that part. Also at that time the Harpoon had less than 100NM range and the SS-N-12 and SS-N-19 had ranges of 200NM plus a 2,000lb warhead. The Russians knew that we would bottle them up in their home waters so if they were to saturate a CVBG with missiles many would get through and wreck havoc. Jamming, Chaff and CIWS can only do so much. In fact the running joke was CIWS stood for Christ It Won't Shoot because it jammed. The US used to have the technical advantage over the world and we could get by with precision weaponry but China through spying and Clinton has made huge leaps.

Duh because how can you describe what makes Russian ships different from others if you don’t compare? There is no single standard for a naval warship. America’s cruisers and destroyers are just basically floating anti air defense systems but Russian ships are floating anti ship juggernauts. The reasons why is because of doctrine, for the US it is its aircraft carriers that do the damage while Russia focuses more on its ships to do the fighting.

This is a stupid video. Why compare apples to oranges? The US has smaller, agile, faster, ships and more of them. Russia still makes huge, slow, heavy, ships. Also, even if you look at ship designs, it is clear that russia just copies american ships, then tries to one-up the US by making them bigger and adding more armaments. This is simply not the philosophy of the conventional US Navy. The US believes now that more and smaller is better. Not to mention, the US and russia have completely different naval doctrines on how to conduct naval battles. Big hulking ships hanging out like giant targets off shore is no longer the norm. Rather, swift, stealthy, attacks have proven themselves more valuable in modern warfare. As usual, the mafia known as russia is a decade (or so) behind the rest of the world, thanks to vlad and his selection of corrupt, crony, felons, to run the country. This video seems to be some sort of russian propaganda film.

The answer is the "mission" of each navy. This is similar to Germany's High Seas Fleet and Britain's Grand Fleet. One navy is designed primarily for coastal defense. Or at least battles in relative proximity to the mainland. The other is designed for Blue-Water missions. The navy for the Blue Water mission has to take more space for logistical necessities. And take into greater account crew comfort. And also leave room for maintenance. Since being out on the sea more often creates different maintenance requirements in multiple locations. While coastal navies can do without any of that.

@Winston Syme I think the Russians are just trying to show brute force by putting an insane amount of weapon systems. A single F22 raptor when undetected can take out the Kirov class IF it is able fire at a distance where the defence system of the ship is unable to intercept it on time. US focus alot on that small window of opportunity.

Vor 12 Tage
Winston Syme
Winston Syme

The idea is that you launch 30 missiles at once against a ship that can only shoot down 25 of them in the time it takes for the missiles to cross the range of their missile defenses. Then you turn and go home to get more missiles. And if both sides can shoot down more missiles than the other has (most likely result in an equal force engagement), the Russians bring bigger cannons and more of them.

The best force multiplier is serviceability. What good is an air force of 1,000 aircraft when less than 50% are flyable at short notice. A small air force that can report 90% flyable 24/7 is the one to go for. Average is less than 60 % for most air forces. Then you have quality and quantity of crew training. The successful are those who live the peace like a full scale war, no one is worse at war than a soldier who never fires his gun in the peacetime. There are a lot of military who are not credible because they never practice, so numbers never tell the truth. Those who go to war with well used guns will win.
