You got this mate. Fitness starts with the first step, but it’s a journey. The key, above all else, is consistency. Don’t be afraid to have a cheat day occasionally, as long as you’re consistently improving every week.

I would really enjoy a series where you go to every national park in Japan. Japan has a lot of great scenery, and it would be awesome to see videos focused on that rather than other aspects of Japan. Also, a series where you go backpacking on some long trails in Japan such as the historical Nakasendo, or the Shikoku Pilgrimage which connects many shrines and temples. I love the outdoors, so videos about hiking and camping in Japan would be really cool to see.

I’m 36, trust me it’s fine getting older. The fatty liver might just be from weight gain. It’s reversible in most cases! And now you’re doing exactly what you need to do to change all of that! Good luck Chris!! 🥰
Vor year@DarkstOfficial +141
everyone I've ever come across with "fatty liver" was never from drinking, it was always adults and minors who've had a pretty unhealthy diet,
Vor year@michaelmcclelland9876 +32
It mostly comes from excess fructose (which is processed exclusively by the liver). Limiting soda/candy and fruit in general tends to make a massive difference.
Vor year@bronstanton9398 +10
Non alcoholic fatty liver is also a condition. I dont drink but have it and my ALP levels have always been high. I eat well and excercise but unfortunately still have a predisposition to it
Vor year@staticbuilds7613 +3
A lot of stuff is usually not from drinking although people like to think it is. I lost count of how many times the hospital staff where I live mention how (random medical condition) would get better if the person did not drink. I happy to hear you are taking charge of your health. The idea of wellbeing is a concept I've been very interested in lately as well. One of the most effective and simplest things I can reccomend is to remember to chew your food well. It sounds ridiculously simple, but works amazingly well. It makes you eat dramatically less without feeling hungry or lacking in food since your body processes the food better. I haven't watched your channel in about two years, and I didn't recognize you at first. You look so different from your first videos. Good luck on getting your good health back. I'm 68 years old and I've been exercising intensely for 52 years. I realized over the years that eating correctly is even more important than exercise. If you are serious try not to eat unhealthy snacks throughout the day. That's usually what kills people off quickly. Also, don't eat any fried foods at all and cut back as much as possible on sugar. But if you find out you're a hopeless fatty, don't sweat it too much. You may not live as long but you will have enjoyed yourself a lot more than fitness freaks like me that deny themselves everything.

one underrated weight loss tip is the use of "incidental exercise" it's kinda like exercising on accident. For example, choosing to take the stairs, get off the train a stop early to walk the rest of the way, being aware of how long you've been sitting for and get up and drink some water or walk through the house, do 10 star jumps etc.

Or in my case, work a manual labour job that kicks your ass for 7-10 hours a day, 5 days a week. I'm the fittest I've ever been whilst perpetually being on the verge of injury :D
Vor year@autumnlove96able +2
Unfortunately not everyone can do those since they may have some health issues as a result of weight gain and/or inactivity or for some other reason. I was diagnosed with hyper extension in all of my joints so without doing strength training on a weekly basis my joints become very painful. I can’t raise my arms past my chest, can’t take stairs due to knee pain, etc. Your diet massively impacts your health and weight, so it’s a great place to start. Getting into a regular exercise schedule of 2-3 days of HIIT (high intensity interval training) workouts and strength training regimens will build the muscles around the joints and will make it easier for people to do incidental exercise.
Vor year@ttchme9816 +16
@@autumnlove96able I once sprained my right wrist on a bike accident and can't use it for 2 years. Long story short, I tried to do my activites without using my right hand and came out of it slightly ambidextrous. If you have a condition, try to do what you can do and keep fit instead of improving. Aim for realistic goals and you won't be disappointed, and don't expect to see any results within a year. If you literally can't do anything, consult someone who can give advice, like a doctor.

Hi Chris! Good luck with this journey and looking forward for you to report on improvements you feel :) What works for me is simple rules, that are easy to follow. Because nobody’s going to follow “strict diet for the rest of your life” for longer than 3 days. For example, I use smaller plates and fill them only once. If I want to snack after meal, I wait for 20 minutes and then snack (because it takes the brain around that time to realize you are not hungry anymore). Also rule of thumb is: your palm of hand for meat/ fish serving, size of fist for vegetable serving, handful for lentils and thumb for nuts / oils. When you are ready for added level of difficulty, be careful about sauces, soft drinks and alcohol - these actually contain a loooot of calories. All other rules I find to hard to follow and drop them almost immediately. Hope that helps 😁

You can do it Chris! I think exercising with friends can help you stay motivated as well. I’m sure you will find a groove in a routine.
Vor year@EbbFlowe
I've always been pretty out of shape, and simply visiting Japan has always put me on blast for it so hard. All the stairs, all the natural hills and elevation changes just within neighborhoods, the lack of A/C blasting in cramped stores like Donki having me sweating like a pig just trying to buy laundry detergent, traveling most places by foot instead of car, etc. Because of this, every time I've gone to Japan since the first time in 2011, I always have a mini training arc where I start walking more and try to lose some weight so that I'm not *quite* as bad off again lol. It's honestly embarrassing when you realize how limited you can become physically compared to people in even just average shape when it comes to even simple stuff like climbing suburban hills and stairs.
Vor year@colinskoog1752
Sometimes working out with friends is risky cuz people tend to flake, but when it works, it's great cuz you hold everyone accountable. I did a work out plan with some classmates one summer and lost 15 lbs! So it can work. Just keep at it! Definitely hike the alps with your friends! I wanna see that stunning footage
Vor year@freecrazymonkey
Others have probably mentioned this as well, but small changes you can maintain for the rest of your life are key. It might be tempting to go on a strict diet and training regiment right away, and it might make for better content, but I do hope you stick to your goal being health above everything. In that case, making small changes whenever you start being comfortable with the previous ones is the easiest way to actually maintain those improvements throughout the year, and then the rest of your life. There are practically infinite resources on fitness for free on the internet, so my suggestion is to start consuming that content before you even begin, find what youe goals align with the most, what fits what you like the most, because a lifestyle you don't like you won't keep up. I also highly recommend getting a cookbook like Coach Greg's (through definitely legal means, surely), as inspiration and rough guideline to see what you like and how to incoporate the lessons into your own cooking/eating out. Good luck!

I never thought I would enjoy running and lifting weights, yet here I am in my 40’s enjoying these things! I wasn’t really considered overweight or unhealthy, at least not in my country (by the numbers), but I was certainly not fit enough. After gaining some pandemic weight, 5lbs was a lot for me, I got up to a weight I swore I would never be, I began to quickly make changes. I did this gradually because I didn’t want to lose a ton of weight so fast and then gain it back 6 months later. I took my time, added new fitness challenges when I was ready. I made changes to my diet and tweaked it as needed. I lost 10lbs and had gained some muscles! Even though recently I am having a few set backs with my health, I am still pushing myself despite some scary challenges. This fitness routine is what’s keeping me going. If I can do this, so can you! Good luck 🏋🏼♂️🧘🏻♀️! Best
Vor year@junktiquity
Its always so hard when you learn your health isnt what you think it is. For me what I eat effects my mood and energy. Ive experimented with Whole30 and Paleo to learn more about what foods bother me and have found gluten, dairy, and sugar are not my friends. Everyone is different, so try experimenting. It's not an easy journey but I really hope you come out on the other side feeling better.
Vor year@unshvncaucasian1428
Very excited for you! I recently made a fitness journey myself and I hope you are able to find the same fulfillment and sense of accomplishment that I have found with my results. Good luck!
Vor year@elizabeth5193
I can relate, my diet was poor and I rarely excercised. It's with the doctor's threat of putting me on my meds and recognizing that there is heart disease and HBP in my family that led me to make the changes My tip is take one challenge at a time. First I took on trying to exercise. Took me a few years to get to exercising daily, 30 min a day. Next was getting off of sugar, I was consuming a shit ton of sugar so I went through weeks of withdrawls and cravings, I was addicted as many people are, but now take in much less sugar. My next challenge will be to cut back on carbs and salt. High Blood pressure meds make you tired, so if you can get that under control you are better off. Good luck with everything!
Vor year@Snowy002
@abroadinjapan , you should do a before and after test to mark ur fitness changes. As an Australian we use the beep test as a fitness guideline, its simple and u can pretty much to it anywhere, and would be interesting to see (if u do it) how much your score changes over time 👍. All the best on your health journey!!!!
Vor year@FocusFireNerdvids +62
This one hits home for me Chris. I'm 40, and have been on blood pressure medication for the last year or so... It was really getting me down but I couldn't see a way out of it. Then recently, on a car journey with my kids, my youngest hugged my arm and told me she wished that I would lose weight because she loves me and wants me to be around for a long time. Immediate gut punch of a reality check. That was around 3 weeks ago, and I've just lost my first stone and am already seeing changes. If my fat ass can manage it, your significantly less fat ass definitely can. Good luck, I'll race you to the skinny jeans!

Hey Chris not sure if this helps but thyroid contributes to weight gain easily and you can get fatigue and other issues too. I hope you get yourself fit and healthy asap because you deserve to feel better 😊

As a "former fat kid" who went from 122kg to 82kg, I highly recommend strength training! Building muscle raises your basal metabolic rate and helps tremendously in losing weight. Also, there is no cardio better than boxing, regardless of whether you're hitting a bag or sparring (and everyone loves a boxing Youtuber lmao).
Vor year@PartikleVT +10
When boxing, always get wrist support. Wether it be those boxing wraps or a thin glove with wrist support, always use them. Its not worth it to get your wrists fucked for the sake of hitting a bag. Other than that, maybe get your technique in order by taking some boxing classes so you dont develop bad habits and problems later on.
Vor year@baoh857 +2
I was just about to come in and comment the exact same thing. Boxing is the best workout I have ever done and has improved my confidence too! I can't recommend it enough.

Ingesting ketones kills hunger & should make fasting easier, too much exercise can be counterproductive.
Vor year@PrimatoFortunato +3
I agree with op. Doing some sort of sport that makes you gain muscle makes wonders for losing weight. Not just because muscle as a tissue needs more upkeep from the body than fat, consuming energy, but more than anything because after some tought hour of lets say swimming, your body demands nutrients, and suddenly junk food doesnt taste good any more...
Vor year@Jonathan-fw6ty +2
Trying to lose weight and build muscle at the same time is the dumbest advice you could ever give someone. Musclebuilding makes you extremely fucking hungry, and you will not burn off the extra calories unless you literally spend your whole days at the gym. Not to mention eating less but not seeing the results on the weight scale is extremely demoralising. You always want to lose the weight you want to lose first, and then start building muscles one you are satisfied.
Vor year@LegendofMicah
Hey Chris, wishing you the best. If Japan were open again, I'd be out walking and biking across the country, and wandering through cities. But you live there, it's home, so it's harder to stay moving. I loved your cycling videos, and I'd happily watch videos of you sharing some cool walking routes in Tokyo, Osaka, etc. Like, here's everywhere you could walk to near Namba station. Or "I walk to every interesting place in Shinjuku." In addition, there's (buddhist or shinto?) old pilgrimage routes, which cover 3-7 days. Aside from more sashimi and salad, I bet some of your viewers can invite you to participate in activites with them. As far as event-type goals for fitness, it would blow my mind if you joined a Yosakoi dance team. I freaking love Yosakoi dance festivals, though they're not really known outside Japan, and it's a bit niche even in Japan. I've never heard you talk about dancing, so I might presume it's not your thing, but there's also such a passionate b-boy and hip hop dance culture in Japan. You could always go for lesson, pick up a few moves. Otherwise, how about Karate or traditional martial arts. I could see a series where you go do different traditional physcial activities for a bit, until you can hit a basic goal, and just keep rotating to new arts, keep on your toes and out of your comfort zone.

Hey, as another Chris(who's also 32 years old haha) who's had issues with his health and eating lifestyle, and as someone who is working to better his health, I understand your want to get healthier too! Something I've done to help me more is "healthy carbs" and waaaaaay less meat. I went from 296 to 241 so far doing that and making sure I have at least 30 minutes of sweating a day. I know you've probably heard this stuff already, but as one Chris to another I'm rooting for ya! We can both get there! We can do it!!!

Someone mentioned this already probably but exercising without noticing it, is so helpful! Walking the stairs instead of the elevator, biking or walking instead of taking the car/bus/subway. Also start with a short workout, say 5 min and then build your way up. I do this every time I lose my workout routine (it does happen...) And then I slowly build it up again. Consistency is the key (just like language learning). And learn what's in premade dishes because they're often not half as healthy as you'd think - homemade cooked food keeps you accountable of what you put in it!

Dude, same. I let myself gain quite a bit of weight since the covid lockdown and as a way to deal with a death in the family. I've just lost 10 lbs now (about 0.7 stone), and it's happened only with a lot of practice eating "healthy" and just getting used to being mildly uncomfortable, allowing myself to give into cravings. I say practice, because there's been a lot of failures where I gave in to cravings or realized some part of the "diet" was not actually helping, etc. I'm rooting for you!
Vor year@ExJapTer
Best of luck, Chris. I was fortunate in having some work mates who were into running and they basically forced me to join them. My advice is to find some people like that to push you, and keep you honest in your efforts. Makes the journey less lonely, anyways.

It'd be super cool if you made your primary physical challenge actually becoming the guy in that coolest bit of fanart! You could find a swordsmanship instructor (which, from my past research, is at least much easier to do in Japan than here in the US) and make it a whole series! I know firsthand that seriously practicing with and using swords and related melee weapons is great full-body training, plus, I'm sure I'm not the only subscriber who'd find it very fun to see you become a badass master of the blade! Hehehe, but really, I think that'd be a top-tier combo of a way to get fit and make fun content at the same time! Maybe you could even get someone like Machii Isao to do a guest appearance and/or collaborate with you!
