Not to write a P.S.A. But... There are a lot of uneducated and stereotypical opinions going on both in the comment section and the video. Most of the diatribe flung in conversation about corsets is wildly incorrect and based in late 19th/early 20th century propaganda which in all honesty was mostly written by rival corset Brands claiming only their “patented corset was healthy” and all others harmful. There were a few physicians claiming adverse health symptoms were solely due to a corset but these were the same men still using leeches, bleeding the feeble, ripping out women’s wombs and lobotomizing housewives because they were depressed or bored. I certainly wouldn’t trust what they had to say about anything in this day and age and there’s a reason for that. It takes very little time reading accredited modern research and legitimate medical findings to prove that 90% of the touted horrors of corsetry is incorrect. Yes your intestines shift downward but they literally move all the time and more so during a pregnancy. It’s not permanent. Women also didn’t go around fainting left and right. That was an affectation made up as a literary plot device. Did fainting happen yes but it was certainly unusual for a woman who had corseted since adolescence to suddenly become overwrought by her foundation garment. And fainting on the whole was, outside of a novel or play, unusual to actually see happen. If you season and gradually lace the stays or corset, and not all at once, they are extremely comfortable and not painful at all. You also don’t get that breathless sensation or feel faint because there is no Sudden change in blood pressure. I’m not trying to disregard what Emma Stone experienced by any means I believe she experience all of that. However, I’m also sure she wasn’t allowed an appropriate amount of time for seasoning or (1-2 months for moderate wear and 1-2 years for tightlacing) to allow her body to naturally adjust to the act corseting. It was immediately restricted and hastily done for a filming schedule and therefore not a reflection of healthy corsetry practices. Also, the myth about losing so much muscle tone that you would be unable to stand up straight without the aid of the garment is a complete fallacy. Even if you wore a corset 24/7 (extremely few people have ever done this) it would take years if not decades and even then it would only be enough atrophy to become extremely fatigued. I understand the drama and socio-political aspects of this kind of garment is a strange restrictive concept for most modern day audiences but take things with a grain of salt and don’t just accept historical rumor as gospel. If your interested in corsetry then research the different facets of the garment and the correct and healthy ways to do it. It will not be for everyone but if it appeals to you, and done correctly, it’s not going to physically harm you.

Everybody! Ignore the Rita Ora, SNL writer, Justin Theroux, Mystery Girls, and 2015 split rumors! The truth is! Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone are still dating and they never broke up at all! and the media lied the entire time. Stonefield is alive and secretly together and keeping the romance private because of the paparazzi. The reason why they keep their relationship private is because of how awful paparazzi and tabloids are!

I can wear mine all day, eat small meals, carry my son around, and be just fine. It does go down over my hips though, so I do have to do the lean-sit thing lol

If your corset is causing you breathing problems and shifting organs, then it is ill-fitted and you should get a better fit one. When properly fitted, then it actually improves your posture (As another corset wearer said below) and should not inhibit breathing or mobility except for poor posture and minor bending.

Caro Wells actually you are wrong — for most of history a corset was no more uncomfortable than a modern bra and in many ways increased comfort by giving support to the bust. Elizabethan corsets were conical not hourglass and reed not whalebone (you can bend in them). They as the above person. Said also helped hold up the weight of skirts and petticoats and crinolines distributing their weight evenly on a strong foundation taking strain away from the hips. It is not until the Victorian eras that the hourglass truly comes into fashion and then again the corset supports back, bust and skirts (which in honesty the crinolines and butt pads coupled with a high bust lift are more what created the hourglass) some people did tight lace but historically not as many as you would think. You actually sound like someone who has done very little study into historical fashion and has never worn a corset. So here’s some anecdotal evidence in support of the above. For years I wore a steel boned (less flexible than whalebone) corset on a very regular basis. It was both comfortable and easy to wear. Far more comfortable than modern shapewear so long as it is the right size. And amazingly for steal I even strained mine to allow slouching. If her corset caused her pain it was either not fitted properly or for some stupid reason they actually used the s bend corset of the Edwardian era (which is as I understand comfortable only if you have a sway back which is not most people) that one caused breathing problems on the regular so much so it’s design didn’t last long. Even recreationists tend to stay away from the true s corset shape and opt for a straight longline. As for the “fainting” you have to also take into account that historically a woman was meant to be delicate and much of that was show and living up to required societal norms. Short version if you never lived as a knight then you don’t know if the armor is comfortable or not. (PS even armor isn’t hugely uncomfortable just hot)

Vor 3 Monate

This is a really common misconception, but I was recently talking to an expert working at a museum, and for the upper classes the corset really was there to provide support to hold up the very heavy skirt while giving back support and help with proper posture, and for the lower classes like women on farms it really helped with back support since they were bending over working all day. It was really just for about a decade at the beginning of the twentieth century that the corsets were that extreme and caused problems breathing and severely shifting organs. In many historical movies the corsets are either not fitted correctly to the actress in order to provide that tiny waist that we think of today or are from the wrong time period, and often are both. The corsets they use in movies are often much more fitted to current beuty standards than beuty standards of the time they are meant to show.

Vor 3 Monate

@Caro Wells I know this but we're talking about historical looking corsets in the modern day, unless you're waist training, the corset isn't fitted properly or you wear it too long corsets shouldn't be uncomfortable

Vor 4 Monate
Caro Wells
Caro Wells

What??? I don't know about modern ones, but historically, corsets have never been made with comfort in mind. Quite the opposite. They're literally designed to forcefully transform a woman's body shape into something unnatural. 99.9% of women are not naturally shaped like hourglasses, but for more than a century corsets were meant to make their bodies look that way. The fact that they had to invent a specialized piece of furniture like a fainting couch because so many Victorian women lost consciousness from wearing tightly laced whalebone corsets suggests that it wasn't about wearing the improper size or a "badly fitted" corset. All of them were badly fitted by nature. I'm flabbergasted that so many people believe corsets are or should be comfortable. It's like saying that if a man is uncomfortable in a suit of armour, it's only because he's wearing the wrong size.

Uh that's not how corsets work, first off the theater guy who went like )( he would have had fat redistribution and muscle training, his organs wouldn't move they'd be compressed Same for Emma like her body should have been eased into corseting instead of just plopping her in a corset because it's not that your organs move but your body gets used to the compression. Also from the sounds of it her corset wasn't the correct size for her and the waist tape (smallest diameter) was sitting too high up on her stomachs/possibly on her ribs which would put the pressure on the wrong place on her body making it harder for her to breathe and it needed to be pulled down to the skeletal waist instead of the natural waist. Tldr corset wasn't worn correctly at first and therefore cause pain.

Utter hogwash. There is no good reason for any modern woman to literally compress her body (or her organs) into any unnatural shape. It's 2019 and people are still defending the act of women physically changing their very body shapes for arbitrary aesthetic reasons? Jesus!

Vor 4 Monate

@Maddi Bonnar im aware of that, but emma wasnt playing aworking woman. while the corset may not have been that uncomfortable for someone who is used to wearing them, it was still pretty hard to sit in due to the shape and for someone who isnt used to wearing tight non stretchy garments (like emma and most women today) also might make it difficult to breathe, even if worn properly (corsets from the early 1700s were rather tight on the bust in order to push the breast up). There have been studies on the effects corseting had back then, and while the idea that women died from corsets is wrong, a lot of them had deformed ribs. (source: The Canadian Student Journal of Anthropology) Also i can imagine that corset are worn pretty tightly on period movie sets simply because a lot of women had smaller upper bodies back then, because they started wearing corsets at a relatively young ages, so a 30 year old woman would have been wearing a corset for almost half her life, so in order to archive the look it all has to be a bit tighter than it may have been realistically.

@maybemae actually a proper fitted historical corset were not more uncomfortable than a fitted/laced evening gown. Let's not forget that many working class woman worked all day in them including scrubbing the floors and working the fields. The problem for most women stemmed from not wearing properly fitting corsets or wrongly made corsets, or to frequently and improperly tight lacing (which if done correctly takes a whole day. Where the laces are tightened every couple of hours to allow the organs to shift and the body get used to the compression. Alot of times people got in trouble when they laced too fast or/and too tight.) Most of our misconceptions about corsets come from tight lacing, which would only be done when they want to impress some one or a function or the like. It wasn't an everyday thing.

@Someone You Know that last sentence is so true. In my perfect world corset training is done gradually & healthy. Unfortunately Hollywood has never cared about safety beyond the money they'd lose from the inevitable lawsuits.

Hi I'm Dad No, in pregnancy, it's gradual. slapping a corset on and having the actresses suddenly have their bodies forced in a position, it's neither natural or gradual, leading to far more serious problems. Especially since Hollywood probably isn't even doing the corsets right.

As long as you do it gradually there is no harm, but wearing one long term will cause muscle atrophy and other issues. All over the world, people do a lot of different kinds of really wild and strange body modifications, extreme corsetry isn't any different.
