i remember reading the reason Americans have so many words with less letters is because back in the day printing cost was by the letter so they would take away letters from words they deemed unnecessary and it’s just never changed

I feels the frustration. The takeaway for me from videos like this is that while differences occur between any language even between US English and British English the fact is the while every other country pays respect to these differences and the people who use them (try to understand the other) people in the US do not. In fact, they usually act as if they didn’t understand even though sometimes the expressions are almost the exact same, try to ridicule you or are quick to correct you. Which is deeple annoying to educated open minded people. Like: you understand me then why corect me? This must have to do something with people in the US -not knowing anyhing about the other person- may feel inferior or even offended and try to gain back their power position. The other part my be a certain kind of tribal thinking (with me or aganst me) so that people pinpoint the differences and se how you react, and make you surrender. This kind of thinking is present in the mitary, firefigthers, high school and mainly mail dominated power play environments. There is a certain level of bullying in it too. Can you imagine an US person being corrected -for say- in a British TV show? Very rare. People wanna make you comfortable, not to look like a fool. In this case the teacher should have said, correct, but the US spelling is different. Ahh, done. Sry.

The main reason why there's a difference has already been said. But I think another reason why a lot of American English words are spelled differently than British English words is Newspapers. They used to charge for the letter, and so writers would leave out unnecessary letters. On top of that letters get cut out a lot on accident because writers are rushing/ aren't spell checking, and so the shortened word becomes the standard. In my opinion I think that actually makes our spelling more practical, because we clearly didn't need those extra letters- but I'm also kinda biased haha 😅
