There are more women in Australian prisons than ever before. And once they're out they're very likely to reoffend and end up back inside.
Four Corners follows three recently released women as they try to start over again on the outside.

Especially since it's a social, mental health based housing service, they should allow pets on a case by case basis for women over 45 on that housing facility. I imagine its tough considering only singles live there socially, and conditional housing arrangements should be given.

To 1st lady .... Good on YOU for keeping yr. dog. It's far more than a pity G.O.& NGO's refuse to acknowledge the importance to our mental health ... I'd be LOST without my Animal Companions (Furbies). Especially, those in the population who are 'socially isolated' . Moving anywhere without is NON NEGOTIABLE. Substance Abusers are ILL/. UNWELL Beings NOT habitual career crims. 95/100 are victims/survivors.... Something you can't pray, meditate, just Get Over ... Talking Therapy was & is the only route out, well for me. Sxl. Abuse & Substance Abuse are committed partners in creating a plethora of ongoing dilemmas EG: INABILITY TO TRUST. SKILL SHORTAGE IN DECIDING WHOM IS WORTHY OF THE GIFT OF TRUST ... ON & ON IT GOES - UNTIL YOU DON'T KNOW HOW TO FIND THE INNER YOU. THE GREAT MAJORITY OF US ARE REALLY VERY STRONG, CREATIVE, & INTELLIGENT.THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE BEING THE JUDGEMENT OF THOSE WHO WE HAVE HAD THE EXPERIENCE OF BELIEVING WE CAN TRUST, ONLY TO FACE THEIR PARCEL OF A NARROW JUDGEMENTAL REPETOIRE USED TO PUT US BACK IN THE TRASH CAN ... EVEN THOUGH WE KNOW WHAT THEY SAY IS NOT APPLICABLE. AFTER SUCH AN EXPERIENCE IT IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO PICK UP YOUR BAGS AND GO - PUTTING AS MUCH TIME AND DISTANCE TWIXT THAT EXPERIENCE ,PERSON ... FROM WHO YOU WANTED NOTHING. "... THOSE WHO JEST WITH SCARS THAT NE'ER FELT A WOUND. " Doesn't leave too many.

WTF robbed her father over 50 times Jesus look I'm not judging I feel very bad for people who struggle and have addictions and many other problems and I do not think that prison is the answer it would be a lot nicer to see the people who break the law and if is not a serious offense and they are doing it to keep up their drug habit it would seem better for them to be put into rehab and given help that way but I'm sorry when that father was showing that he had to put bars on his windows and she said she has robbed him over 50 times she's lucky that he's even talking to her because as much as we love our kids and we continue to take them back no matter what they've done to us I could see where some people think that's enabling but then also it is your child and your love for them is unconditional it all is just so sad I feel like that in the past about 10 years I have seen and watched so many females have their lives ruined and turned upside down because of crystal meth I think it is one of the most dangerous drugs out there because it surely does change the person and not for the better and it seems like a lot of violent crimes that have happened where women are committing them most of the time they are hooked on crystal meth I mean how often do we hear of someone robbing someone with a gun or killing someone Etc because they are smoking pot never I have never in my time come across anyone who is a pothead and is committing violent crimes as to where a lot of violent crimes are being committed by both men and women who are addicted to ice / crystal meth⁉️ my point I'm trying to get to is that this drug in particular seems to have taken a ahold of so many people these days and it is causing them 2 do horrific things that they would never do normally so this is one drug that very much scares me as it seems to be affecting so many, many people male and female😭😰😱😩😵😳🥺👹👺👎💔👌✌🙏👋❣

Can't watch it through. Its disturbing and upsetting. This is a failed system that perpetuates itself. A woman gets out of prison with 50$ in her pocket? Of course, it won't be long before she'll return to jail. Incarcerated time, for non violent felons, should be rehabilitation time: In prison , work factory , where the inmates can earn/save for their release. In prison, schools, where the inmates can learn a profession. Help them get a second chance at life, don't perpetuate the misery. Make a difference. Make them fit in a normal productive life. Invest in rehabilitation instead of building more jails and recruiting more cops. Policeman and jails are much more expensive then basic rehabilitation. Most people resort to crime, out of desperation, not out of reasonable choice. Don't perpetuate the desperation.

After being released from prison, I think what works against you is being on probation. In theory, they're supposed to be supportive & helpful and help ease you back into life but they don't! Instead, you're treated with suspicion and distrust, as if you're still committing crimes, or will the first chance you get. Which is why the threat of being sent back to prison is constantly dangled over your head! It would be easier if you were, because you'd be one less case load. Someone having that much power and influence over your life at their leisure is a little too much for some to handle. You're afraid to go out and live your life because you feel like someone's always looking over your shoulder, or you're doing it yourself as if something's always lurking behind, just waiting for you to trip up! It's why some even violate on purpose. What else could someone be relied on to do in that situation when you feel set up to fail right from the start, as if it was expected of you anyway? This may sound a bit extreme and far fetched to some , but mostly to people that have never been in that situation. Those of us who have will usually tell you, thats how it really is even now!

I was a stay at home mom.... clean cut, volunteer for field trips and always hosting play dates. Then, my newest son passed away from sudden infant death syndrome. I found drugs to cope. Then, fell for a guy on charges to protect him from being convicted for drug possession. Lost my mind. Children. Freedom. Sat in jail for a year, and have since been sober. But it's really hard to be a drug felon and gain employment. I'm also now in therapy, but the lack of that in jail is alarming. You don't get rehabilitated. You just live like a homeless person and pass time. My heart goes out to those trying.

Drug addiction is an illness it’s more rehab is needed and doesn’t matter male or female the same is needed. Trauma in life makes you do stupid things one of them getting addicted to drugs to kill the pain. Hopefully these women will get the help they need to get their lives back on track. Less likely to offend again if they get proper help rather than locking them up and putting them back into society unhealed to reoffend.

As a SURVIVOR of SEPSIS and also SEPTIC SHOCK, I know with absolute CERTAINTY that the lady at the beginning has NO idea what she's talking about. Sepsis is an immune response to a severe infection in your body as the infection spreads throughout the body via the bloodstream. It DOES NOT EVER stem from stress or just simply from using ice, it was the result of an infection because she probably wasn'texercising good hygiene or maybe she was using needles but it didn't just happen because of the use of drugs.

Yes I’ve been to jail myself and have heard from many women who have been through similar if not the same things, I believe that there will always be some that continue to commit crime and will go in and out for the rest of their lives. Yet know that there will be many women who will learn from their mistakes and just need to be given a chance to make things better, also having a home first is so important as it gives them the security, safety as this then will help them focus on the other things that everyone else is doing. I hope 🤞🏼 that these women will continue to do all the things that will help them fit into every day life.

In Australia, if you are a female and you lie to Police (perverting the course of Justice), you will be charged and will receive a custodial sentence. If you are a man and lie to the Police, you will not be charged because the prisons are too full. There are more women in jail for lying to Police than for any other offences combined. Women will often lie to cover the offenses of others and they do so at their peril.

Why isn't Fran living with her son ? Why did she get a pet BEFORE she found safe accommodation. GREAT priorities. She said that she had to cut ties with all her so called friends pre Prison release. What happened to all her friends she had pre her husband's death - were they all druggies too. Glad to see "Dress for Success" is helping her dress sense is NOT great. Bekki is so lucky that she was given clothes & $50 as she left Prison, She could have been released with the same she went in with - the clothes she had on & NO MONEY. Bekki's Dad is doing OK - driving a vehicle that costs between $50,000 & $140,000. Donna FAILS to even obey common sense LAWS that force people to protect their own heads while ride a bicycle AFTER she was release from Prison !!!!!! What a HUGE flat screen TV Donna was GIVEN with her accommodation. I find it hard that there are always "EXCUSES" why people turn to crime. Experiences don't cause Domestic Violence, sexual assault victims to turn to crime. Most women who experience trauma in their lives do NOT turn to crime. I started experiencing trauma before I was 12 mths old with more trauma continuing for the last 60+ years. NEVER once did I turn to a single crime. I turned to doing volunteer community work (all be it obsessively). I am at present homeless (& physically disabled from a work accident) and NO one has offered me the help that these women have been offered let alone a decent place to live. But I am resourceful & hard working and will again live in a safe decent home.

These women need to be in rehab not prison. Clearly their being emotionally unwell lead to behaviour that put them and others at risk. Also would be an idea to teach these women skills to eg., make things and sell them so they can be self employed. Also start a group of women who can work together and build up a business eg., making things, decor, marketing etc. Teach them how to, give them support, see what they can do..

The biggest issue is there's no early intervention. Especially when it comes to survivor's of abuse both male and female. I've worked in the criminal justice system on and off for 10 years in a variety of different capacities. Early intervention and helping people find a way out of criminality is the key. Also compassion. The justice system is based on revenge, there's hardly any rehabilitation when it comes to prison. People go in one criminal and come out another kind. I've read 100s of prisoner files and the key theme is always an event in childhood that went ignored and unchecked. Most people do not want to live in a cycle of trauma, abuse, violence and criminality but some just can't see a way out or don't know a way out. I don't understand all the sexist comments. No one is saying men don't go to prison or men don't suffer, there are 1000s of shows about male criminality. ABC take the time to interview a few women and all the sexism starts. If you actually did a bit of research about why most women end up in prison, a lot can be linked back to addiction, family violence, child abuse and trauma, very similar to males in prison, with the main difference being that males are the main ones responsible for most abuse, family violence, white collar and blue collar crime. That's not sexism, that's facts.

The #1 reason people use drugs is to treat themselves for mental problems. They often do not feel that they can trust others to help them, and they also often feel betrayed by people of authority and I can't blame them for that as it is usually authority figures in someones life that mess up peoples lives. Especially so when there are so many police that refuse to go after peoples attackers and those that abuse them in other ways. That is because they find it acceptable for young women and children to be abused, as they probably were as a child.

Can people actually have some compassion for these women? Imagine being sexually abused at 6 and having your own parents not believe you? I’m not excusing what they did, but imagine the grief and pain bekki felt. Sexual abuse makes you self destruct. It’s like an insidious creep into your soul and it makes you feel shame and guilt even though it wasn’t your fault. If you look into these women’s pasts, you’ll find the answer to their self destructive behaviour.

My story is in relation and the defence of this young woman. I’m 35, my best friend whom I met in junior high school, role call, confined in me only at the age of 22 that she was sexually abused at an age a little later on of 6. After examination of professional help she realised her self worth as an adult teenager and the early years of her 20’s was only of sex value towards males coz of what happened. Her parents have no inkling to this day. From a family of religious background she wanted nothing more than to protect her parents. In my opinion only (I’m not claiming to be right) of this video, With out question, the mother did not believe her daughter. The daughter had a coping mechanism that was destructive physically that complimented mentally. If there was someone to blame, the people who didn’t investigate her claims thoroughly would be it. But they could not have anticipated the truth. Also She was born with addictive tendency. A lot of us are. We don’t know it until something horrific happens to us. AND / OR no one believes us when we seek support and have to use what ever else is in us to survive and we pick up all sorts of abuse. Why didn’t the father do more if he believed. Support is crucial. Parents are crucial. I AM pointing A finger yes, BUT not the way that’s nasty, BUT IT IS logically. I’m also saying AS PARENTS acknowledge YOUR mistake, accept responsibility and I absolutely can’t stress this enough, with all the love n kindness In the world forgive Your self. You only thought what u thought and have obviously spent the last however many years paying for it. Not wanting to condemn ANYONE. But asking for EVERYONE to understand and recognise their part in results.

Because of that, a potential opportunity to engender understanding in order to inform change for the better is now just fodder for shamers, blamers, and trolls. And I'm being polite. Word of warning? People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. If this is happening in your own backyard, maybe you should pay attention and actually find constructive ways to address endemic problems. I guarantee this sh*t WILL catch up with you while you sit there, all busy feeling superior and eating your priveledge popcorn...

It's because of the disparity in the sympathy of treatment. When males perpetrate a crime, they are regarded as perpetrators. When females perpetrate a crime, people want to portray them as victims.

Its happening everywhere... in the phillipines they just shoot dealers and addicts on the street. No gender bias too!!! While eating popcorn!

This story breaks my heart. Donna has "never" had a home shed felt safe in. Let that sink in. There's a lot of sadness in this hour, but tremendous hope too.

It's unfortunately very common, even if the child is believed the offender will deny if confronted and manipulate their way out of any accusation. Many threaten to absndon families if they are exposed and long established power imbalances allow them to maintain position. Pedophiles are strategic, patient and play a long game.

MediaSock I was sexually abused by my brother on multiple occasions. Told my parents and they didn’t believe it. Instead supported my brother. Needless to say at age 50 I was going through therapy for it.

@TOP COP I don't care either way man or woman. You do the crime you should do the time. And I also believe when a man or woman either one, get out of prison they should both be helped equally. They also in their part they need to get their s*** together and prove themselves. Man or woman

It's nice to see someone not only want help...but to actually get it. Prisons are a money bag for the rich and as long as that continues we will always have over crowding along with undeserved longer than required sentences being handed out. Man or woman...break the law and you have to face the consequences, that's obvious to anyone with a brain. Did a paper on this years ago (in the US) on why women were getting harsher sentences than men for the same crime and the majority of women weren't violent (most of the men were). My conclusion was that we have male judges handing these sentences down and YES...this may come as a shocker to some of you...these male judges are sexist. Of course this wasn't the same for everyone but it was something that should be looked in to. And no, I don't hate men....quite the opposite! Not a feminist or a Liberal either. I do however...believe in statistics and that's what they were saying at the time. Might do more research on this today to see if anything has changed.

Jail can only happen to dumbos who CHOOSE to break the law instead of CHOOSING to find a LEGAL way out of some disastrous social situation. ANY WOMAN today in Australia only has to knock on the door of ANY womens shelter or church or hospital or ring the magic hotline and she will be immediately assisted ... maybe not get an immediate bed, but certainly caring counsel, and soon after some emergency financial assistance and treatment and then temporary housing to keep her legal and safe and to help her get back up again. There's only one fork in the road to ever take: the criminal choice or a knock on the door and SINCERELY ASK for help. If ya ain't ready or smart enough for that, society kindly gives you a free bed and food in jail. Take your pick. When you get out, you've got the same choices again. Repeat until cured.

@Ana Yes, such services ARE seriously underfunded. But recidative crims like this woman above have NO-ONE to blame but herself. She had help, did not change. Had help, did not change. Had help, did not change. PTSD, my arse. Personal choice sweetie. Sure, low IQ, mental illnesses, but then society and themselves need to be protected from such boofheads.

Wow. You guys are uneducated on these matters. The services you speak of are seriously underfunded. There are over 100,000 people on waiting lists for homes in Australia. Drug rehabilitation centers also have waiting lists, and often wont take people who have conplex PTSD. It's not about sincerely asking for help, it's about whether or not services have room to help and hoping you are one of the lucky ones. Maybe you don't know this as you have never had to ask for help, may it stay that way.

Bang on!! So many females would rather pretend to be helpless snowflake-VICTIMS. It's easier to scam society that way They teach boys and men to do it too. & you are right if too dumb for society just keep that sick corruption locked up far away from my kids!

Yawn. What's the bloody agenda here? Why not ask why so many men are going to jail? Non-gendered facts: Population is rising. Petty crime is rising. Human poverty and homelessness and IQ stupidity and drug use are rising. Citizen and judicial intolerance to criminals is rising. Parole is harder to get than years ago. Punishment is more the focus than rehab in jails. Ex-crims suffer massive prejudice upon release. Not hard to answer the posited Dorothy Dix question.

Fran how dare you use your son's and husband's deaths as an excuse for you becoming a drug addict. There are thousands of women that have been in the situation. Why was the cause of your son's death? You were very clever not explain his cause of death especially when you explained your husband's cause of death. My Mother, had a daughter 17 yrs old die in a MVA as a passenger as a result of a kangaroo hopping in front of the car. Then her husband died 5 years later of a Grade 4 Brain Tumour -- 3 mths after a tennis ball size tumour was removed. My Mother didn't turn to drugs, alcohol or even prescription medication. Our family didn't have any family support as we migrated to Australia and left all family behind in the US. Then Beccy is also making EXCUSES for why she became a criminal. There are thousands of girls now women that have endured child sexual assault and NOT become drug addicts and criminals.

I just don't think it's very fair for you to compare. Everyone experiences pain differently. We all are fighting our own battles and it's not fair for anyone to compare and tell people how they should feel or how strong they should be. You don't live inside the heads of these women! I've had that attitude myself until my sister died and I had to plan her funeral and realised that my whole life I judged her thinking "if I survived our childhood why couldn't she?" but that was 10 years ago and I live in the real word now. Everyone's different, it's important to remember that most people are doing the best they can.
