Why Aircraft Carriers Lost One Arresting Wire?

We were curious why new aircraft carriers have only three arresting wires instead four on older Nimitz carriers. While the answer may seem obvious, the exact reason for this change is not what you think, or is it?

They have a barrier on the carriers just in case the planes don’t catch the wire so even if the planes don’t catch any of the wires, they will still be stopped by a big net put in the way for planes that don’t catch any of the wires. -.-

Vor Monat

Thats more for emergencies, arresting hook failed, broken whatever and cant be lowered, rather than having the pilot eject and lose a $90m aircraft those nets catch the aircraft and cause minimal damage... Otherwise in a normal situation just before you hit the deck pilots put the aircraft into full throttle so they can takeoff again and come round for attempt #2

I think the general sentiment is to throttle down as you approach, but as soon as you hit the wires you go full throttle, just in case you actually missed. Far better to be able to circle around and try again than roll off the deck and into the sea

I worked the cable system on RAF Lakenheath from 2nd quarter 2001- 2004. Only the wing king: He came in with total hydraulic failure and some other issues. He hit the perfectly good primary steel cable with less than 10 recoveries on it like he was landing on an aircraft carrier. The notch in the asphalt over concrete from the hook directly before the primary cable was there until they repaved it. after 04. He hit on the cable, fast and took the cable out of service and took 15ft of tape (elastic flexible roll) off each of the sides. It cost the wing I want to say like $58,000 total to get his aircraft with 2 souls on board safety down that day. We had to get a cable expedited out to England from Germany ASAP and faster for 100% replacement ability. His wing man took the secondary cable (like an adult) after we pulled the primary cable off the runway and we didn’t even loose a donut off the second cable. What was the wing king doing with his wingman and 2 other separate $35M F-15E’s over England on a proficiency flight that would cause 2 IFE’s? Still don’t know.

We try to read most of the comments and eliminate our previous mistake in future videos. @Alain Robillard This is an example of wasted sarcasm, I suppose. The pronunciation of fresnel has been addressed over and over for this video....as has "mark", for Mk and the A-6 to F-18 editing transition. It was to point out the extent to which people make comments without even glancing at previous comments. I didn't mean it as a way of "trolling" anyone. I apologize for getting you to waste your time. Now, could someone talk about what Mk stands for?

Fresnel is a french name. The way the French pronounce it is "frey-nell", with the stress on "nell". The "s" is silent. If you are in the Navy, you pronounce it... like the other crew member do! For defense... If war breaks out (which will certainly happen to a defenseless nation) then you need to be ready. You can't just drop a bunch of money and suddenly have a full fleet of ships, jets, weapons, equipment and trained crew ready to go. Unfortunately, many nations depend on the U.S. for their defense as well (many at no cost- which is the very unfortunate part). De-funding the worlds largest military force would cause an insane global imbalance of power. China and Russia would jump on the opportunity for what would essentially be free real estate...

Air planes landing on aircraft carrier are landing at full thrust. Some jets land with afterburners lit. Planes are landing with the full intention to take off if they don't catch a wire. The arresting system is stopping planes at full thrust.

My friend was in charge of the arresting wire under deck, he said that the old systems decapitated and mamed seamen all the time if malfunctioning, the spools of wire snap under tension or get red hot if not greased constantly and break. Same with anchor crew, lots of hazardous jobs on board the carriers. I think it is one of the most interesting armed forces, every job is important.

Only now did I wonder, what is the fallout below deck. I can only imagine it's catastrophic to man and machine. Do you know how different the poly cord system is as far as breaks. Everything breaks eventually.

Arresting cables are about 1 inch in diameter - so they are heavy - and they are traveling the same speed as the aircraft that just snagged them. There are YouTube videos of arresting cables breaking in use, and yes, they can severely injure sailors.
