Why Aircraft Carriers are Smaller than Commercial Ships?

Given today's available technology and the US Navy's budget, one might wonder why aircraft carriers are not built bigger/longer so they can accommodate more aircraft, especially that there are bigger /longer commercial vessel traversing the oceans every day. In this video, we will give you our take on this question, and it may not be what you think.
Note: "The appearance of U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) visual information does not imply or constitute DoD endorsement."

Not What You Think
Not What You Think

What do you think of the 4 reasons listed? Are there other reasons why carriers are not built in longer length that should have made it to our list?

Vor 2 Monate
Known

You seem to confuse longer with larger. A ship that’s just longer isn’t necessarily large by volume. A ship that is 1,100 feet long by 135 feet wide is 145,000 feet square. Now a shorter length ship of 1,000 feet but wider at 275 feet is nearly double the internal volume of 275,000 feet squared.

a longer waterline makes a ship faster, so their short(er) length is negative for their speed.

@George L You are the one who thought a successful mission with casualties as a moron thinking. And I successfully point out otherwise. A UK mission & US mission that even cause all planned to crashed & burned is still a successful mission. You know so little about war. Keep talking!

Vor Monat

@John Thiers They can launch aircraft at any speed, but the combat load and fuel may need adjustment. It also depends on the wind speed. To launch aircraft at MTOW they need the carrier to move pretty fast.

I hate to tell you this, but hull speed increases as boat length increases on displacement type hulls. If aircraft carriers were longer, they could potentially be even faster. As it currently stands, U.S. Navy carriers are the fastest ships in the Navy, by a wide margin.

Bigger Aircraft carrier = more deck space = more length to launch without being up-wind ( one of the issues the Japanese Carriers suffered during Midway ). Also bigger carrier = more compartment = more spaced armor = harder to sink. A carrier with the underwater width of a oil tanker but compartimenlized as a warship can deal a lot better with torpedo hits and mines ( and increase safety storage area ) because of the redundancy in buoyancy. Let alone the extra distance for ordinance to reach area's that go boom. For me it feels like Carriers are stuck in the old 1930's carrier = ship. While a carrier can be a mobile "island", slower yes but more capable and less in need of a fleet to protect it ( and we have seen how easily some modern subs can sink a carrier during wargames despite a fleet protecting it ). A carrier can be a mobile base, not just for attack aircraft and light bombers, but also for heavy bombers. Add to this troops / tanks / etc. You do not need to show them off in ports and with the right modularity build in, it can be made self repairable by transporting new modules to the "carrier". Much better then sending carriers back for repairs that sometimes months. Literally allowing them to keep operational, even in crippled state. Costly? Yes ... But less costly then needing entire fleets to protect one asset each.

You don't see our aircraft carriers with the ski jump on them why you say because our men actually know how to land and take off of our carriers they don't know how to take off from a flat deck carrier or have land on one when you got that ski jump on your aircraft carrier that tells tells you that the pilots don't know how to fly and they can do less damage then the United States would do because they carry less ordinance less fuel because they have to to take off that's just the facts don't believe me there's other ones like this to tell you why that ski jump is on there

You want to know why, just look south. They need to travel through the Panama Canal. It's why Yamato was as big as the IJN wanted, they were free from the restraint of the canal, where as our Navy might need to send one of our carriers in the Pacific to the Atlantic

there is one other determining factor, especially for US carriers. Canal Transit. The "biggest" ships can not actually transit many canals, including the Panama canal. Ships need to be made to certain dimensions - refered to as max's. the max size a ship can be to travel through said canal. So if a ship is intented to go though the Panama canal, the largest it can be is Panamax, To make use of the Suez canal, its Suezmax. When building carriers, countries will take this into account, will, not just the carrier, but ALL its escorts be locked to one ocean? will they be expected to and have the range to go around the horn of africa or the southern part of south america?

Still wonder if a "commercial" carrier with less war survivability but lower cost would be a good thing. A 400 meter classic commercial bow, conventional propulsion with more space but lower performance would be perfect for 50% of the navy duty and can still project US power around the globe for halt or even a third of the price. Like a lot of those us "toys" they are so over kill in most situation. Since Kuwait, they are just expensive airport in a way.
