So the question is, self-flagellation aside, how do you get those people to believe in you enough to devote time on a project they have no stake in, in the begining? In essence, how did you manage to gather your first team?

Tom, speaking as a beardm'n approaching 40 who has followed your career from your earliest videos to make their way under my nose all the way across in Australia PRE-YouTube, I just wanted to say that it is videos like this that proves your personal growth and evolution. We've all grown from being awkward, weird kids doing some questionable and dumb shit that would probably cancel us today, but your efforts to ensure the people you have worked with, the people you've *peripherally* worked with, and others in your life - be they people you know or just people who look up to you / enjoy your mouth-sounds in our ear holes - know that they are valued, appreciated, and are having their talents spruiked to allow others to potentially work with them is just proof that you are a person of quality and ethics. Thank you for being awesome, for learning from mistakes and OWNING them, and for being as transparent as an online creator can be without sacrificing 100% of their private life. You're awesome mate.

As someone who has made a short film and due to extremely low budget circumstances and time constraints had to take both the roles of director and assistant director at the same time I can tell you that the complaining about the assistant director behind their back part is 100% true. That was an awful experience, I don't know how people are volunteering to be an assistant director. You're fucking nuts and incredibly courageous.

I like to explain ships roles in terms of naval terms. Your Quartermaster is your Director(They make the calls to the senior crew), your Captain is your Producer(It's their boat, and their job to marshall those resources), and your Bosun(Boatswain) is your AD(whose job is to make those calls to the crew as a whole). Your director's doing quiet talking with your seniors and the producer at the helm(monitors) while your AD is doing an awful lot of yelling to get people to DO the things that those senior crewmen come up with.
Vor 2 MonateTacComControl
Also, to further clarify, because I realized I did not clarify that well in my previous statement, directors are in fact giving orders. They're giving orders to actors. They don't have time to give orders to the crew. That's what your AD is for.
Vor 2 MonateTacComControl
Also also, the helpers, gophers, runners, etc, that you're talking about, they all fall under the umbrella of Production Assistants, in my experience. Some get delegated certain jobs(i.e. on one set, we had a dozen PAs and only ONE of them had a driver's license... and didn't have a car. So they ended up having to take the soundy's car into town to get some things that had been forgotten. That was almost a very, VERY tense conversation because apparently he was not a very good driver), but ultimately, they're the new guys, the young ones, the fresh-out-of-community-college types who, while some of them won't shut up about THEIR vision and THEIR perfect movie and THEIR pitch(you learn not to do that in the first few jobs), in most cases, a production flat-out does not happen without these guys. Now, things like Uber Eats have made some of their jobs less necessary, but there's always gonna need to be someone to go grab someone, or someone to schlep gear off the truck, or someone to go get that really important thing out of the car that someone forgot that's SUPER important but that they can never, ever, EVER remember to get out of their damn car when coming onto the set YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHO YOU ARE MR. SCRIPT SUPERVISOR WHO NEVER BROUGHT THEIR DAMN READING GLASSES WITH THEM ONTO THE SET AND HAD TO TAKE UP RUNNERS OVER AND OVER AGAIN JUST TO GO GRAB THEM FROM YOUR CUPHOLDER. All of which is to say, for small productions, sure, basically EVERYONE is a PA, because on small productions, everyone's wearing a lot of hats, but once you get into the big leagues, you learn that outside of very specific people whose names might rhyme with Bobert Bodriguez, the many-hats thing is.. frowned upon. Not just because your work suffers, but also because you're taking someone else's job, and therefore, someone else's income, away from them. Which may make you feel great as a producer, because money saving, but gig work is a cosmic bitch, and for PAs, they're the lowest rung on the pay totem pole, with an industry standard rate of about 200 a day. Which might SOUND like a good day's pay, but then you gotta remember that that's a minimum 10 hour day with VERY weird breaks(maybe), and that once production is over, you're back in the unemployment line, and you're HOPING that you're on a call sheet for another upcoming production. Lotta ramen noodles for production assistants. Also when I say weird breaks, that's one of the things no one tells you about film production. There's a lot of downtime, but never in the way you think it is. The PAs, the grips, the gaffers, and a BUNCH of the other crew, once the actors are on their marks, their job is usually to fuck off. Go hang out at craft services, don't catch eyelines, don't talk, don't make excessive noise(or any noise), and scarper until a cut is called. Which is funny, because you're often told to "Always look busy, never just stand around, there's always something you could be doing", but on a set, you do a LOT of standing around.
Vor 2 MonateTacComControl
Also an underappreciated job of art directors is to watch for continuity issues. Or for set intrusions. It'd be very bad for worldbuilding, for instance, if someone left their starbucks cup in on a banquet table in the middle of a shot in a fantasy medieval setting, for instance. Art directors are supposed to catch that.
Vor 2 MonateTacComControl
Also something that drives me nuts in production is how many people don't realize the difference in terms between a Cinematographer and a Director of Photography. Cinematography is what you do as a career. Director of Photography is your job title ON THAT PRODUCTION. You can be a Cinematographer who ends up slumming it and working as a PA for a bit. Cinematographer is what you call yourself. Director of Photography is what you're listed as on the call sheet.
Vor 2 MonateMarcus Reed
This is the kind of thing that so many overlook and this series is an amazing way to give absolutely due credit to hardworking crews everywhere! Even those working inside the industry can overlook the work their counterparts are doing or even discount the importance of the role given to themselves. Good on you Tom, as I am positive the sheer amount of time you put into making sure you can give credit to those you've worked with in and of itself is a huge undertaking, it shows you highly value those who you worked with.

I couldn't disagree more with the definition of the the 1st AD as near loathed. They are the most important person on a film set that the public don't really know about. Yes they crack the whip but I would gladly buy a drink at the end of the day for the 1st who gets us to wrap on time and doesn't pick on depts as scapegoats. A good 1st AD is worth their weight in gold there are far too many bad ones though who are good within the production office but can't handle the set with any dignity. Source: I've been a Soundman in film & TV for 20 years and just want to shout some love for my 1st AD bros and sisters.

I know it's completely out of scope for the point of the video, but something that rings in the back of my mind as I watch this is how, really, the revenue splits. There is an entire "business management" concept that isn't seen here that makes a lot of hard financial choices of how to slice the pie, and there is a *LOT* of slices of pie here... and in my head I just have no clue how anyone can afford to eat lol
