The riders’ Hungarian holiday will then conclude on the shores of Lake Balaton 24 hours later with a stage that looks set to see the first big clash between the pure sprinters. Will we see the likes of Ver Der Poel taking on Caleb Ewan and Mark Cavendish, or will there be a surprise winner?

The final 800 meters to the line was a slight downhill, perfectly reconned by Quickstep and Cav. That's why Cav only needed Morcov for a solo leadout. Cav never broke his cadence to the line and no bike throw was needed at the finish. Perfect tactics= deserved win.

Don't forget the man is a LEGEND! So many people said he's "done" and "washed up" but he was battling EBV for 2+ years! He's clearly on form this season. We WILL see him break Merckx record!! He's back with the Wolfpack, the greatest sprint leadout team in the peloton. He is ABSOLUTELY a threat this season!!

@Uncle Nobed that's the dumbest comment I've read all week! The man is tied for MOST TDF STAGE WINS!!! He's literally the greatest sprinter to ever live. His stats PROVE that. You people said he was "DONE for" and "washed up" but he was fighting EBV for 2+ years! He came back and showed all the haters that he's still a great sprinter and he wins the first real sprint stage at the Giro and you're still saying he's no good. Nothing will shut you lot up. His stats will stand in history as the greatest sprinter to ever compete!

People saying Bini got boxed in. No it's called bad positioning. There was never going to be a space on the barrier with Gaviria and Cav right in front of him
Vor yearFunnyl content +14
But you can tell bini was in full power to finish first
Vor yearEd McGuigan +9
He's a baby at the moment. He was there or there abouts and he has the engine to win classics from breakaways so he doesn't live or die on his mass sprint performances. Personally I was just happy to see him contending. His specialty is uphill finishes and this was downhill. His job here is to win a stage, maybe two, and get to Milan. His ability to handle a three week race is what is being tested for the first time.
Vor yearAdam Fitzmaurice +5
I'd suggest being "boxed in" doesn't necessarily mean you've been put there by other riders' actions. The timing and route he took to the front led him to that position and 4th is the best he could get taking that route, not terrible but they were sprinting for a long time and he was the only one really getting a draft so perhaps his apparent speed is a bit flattering because of that too? Either way, hope to see some good battles over the next few weeks and hope to see the purple jersey competition take off!

Cav is without doubt in the top ten of British sportsperson of all time
Vor yearEd McGuigan +14
Most Brits don't know enough about the sport to appreciate his special place in the pantheon of cycling greats. Head and shoulders the greatest bunch sprinter there has ever been. He has reigned over more than 15 years in a specialty where typically a guy has three or four good seasons. I am not sure if guys lose their nerve or their speed but we could come up with twenty names or more of the guys who Cav has seen off. Cav would always cite the lead out trains that he has had but teams only pay for lead out trains when the sprinter is good enough to justify it. Wish my dad had lived long enough to see his second coming. He bloody loved Cavendish. The idea of a Brit taking the points jersey and closing the show on the Champs Elysees was just something so outlandish back then.

He's back with the Wolfpack, the greatest sprint leadout team in the peloton and as you stated, he is the greatest bunch sprinter EVER!! He is ABSOLUTELY a threat this season!! I've met Cav a dozen times and all the people that say he's a prick are confusing his ways with passion and he's GREAT to his fans. I've got a pic of him and I together framed on the wall as soon as you enter my house. It was in a hotel about 6 years ago after a stage at AMGEN TOUR OF CALIFORNIA. I've actually got about 8 pics with Cav and hes ALWAYS been great to me. He autographed 4 items for me at once. Faulting riders for Biniam’s getting boxed in is as good as faulting him for ‘blocking’ Caleb Ewan in stage 1.
Vor yearThomas JMJ +1
Did he even block Ewan in stage 1🙄🙄
Vor yearguitarrerist69 +4
Woah. He didnt block Caleb. I dont think he's even aware that Caleb was directly behind him. He's still a developing sprinter tactics-wise.
Vor yearkibrom miebale +2
it is obvious Biniam was boxed in as the result he stoped pedaling twice, but it was Caleb Ewan's fault to hit him from the back.
Vor yearSam W +3
@Thomas JMJ No he didn’t. In fact that’s my point. There is a reason why I put the word blocking in quotation marks. Since Bini was already in front of Caleb he wasn’t obligated to get out of his way to let him pass no matter how fast Caleb was going. Once a rider boxes himself in, those riders in front of him and on his left and right are under no obligation to get out of his way; the onus is on him to break free. If they block him on purpose by moving into his path that would be a different story.
Vor yearSam W +1
@kibrom miebale I agree. However, being boxed in and being blocked are two different things. If you’re boxed in, obviously your mobility will be limited but you have no one to blame but yourself. It always happens especially when you are in the middle of the peloton. Even if you’re a better sprinter and yet you happen to be surrounded by riders from all directions, those riders will be within their right to stand their ground and not move out of the way.
Vor yearlom +10
I can't wait to see the first stage win for Bini , Eritrea and Africa!!!! Hopefully stage 5. Good luck !!!

Rule of thumb: The sprinter lead out by Mørkøv wins 🤗
Vor yearKen Kaniff +1
C'mon man. He's absolutely a great leadout man but Cav has been doing this his entire career. A great leadout is essential so I'm not taking anything away from Morkov but Cav is back and hes with the Wolfpack, the greatest sprint leadout team to ever ride!! Morkov didn't win that sprint, Cav did FROM 300mtrs OUT!! Not many sprinters can hold a 300mtr sprint in a bunch sprint but yes Morkov was a great help.
Vor yearDavid Miller
@Ken Kaniff the greatest lead out team was HTC highroad. They was so good they could dictate a whole stage and had more firepower at the end of the stage to beat anyone
Vor yearKen Kaniff +1
@David Millersounds like the Wolfpack but I MIGHT give you that one. My memory isn't so good but since you mention it I do agree to an extent but on the other hand I feel the Wolfpack is JUST as good and for longer. They have been as good for LONGER than HTC was relevant

Is there anyway Cav can ride the TdF? He might just be able to get that record breaking stage win. If he has to wait till next year, maybe he wont have the legs. I know Quickstep have other sprinters, esp. Fabio Jacobsen, but surely Cav deserves one more crack at Merckx record.
Vor yearDave Tarrant +7

Deal was Jakobsen rides TdF, but Cav gets Morkov to lead him (at least trough first 13. stages at Giro). Except any unfortunate injuries Cav wont ride TdF this year
Vor yearMiles Davis +6
@Mladen Stankovic Yes, I know that was the deal/plan and might even be best for Cavs legacy as he could end up with more grand tour stage wins than Cipollini. I'd just like him to have another crack at the TdF too.
Vor yearDiggerless +5
He can obviously still be picked - I hope so - his romps down the Champs Elysee are etched in my memory :)
Vor yearrobotomassi2011 +4
I can see them taking him and trying to get an early sprint win for him to take the record, especially if he has a strong Giro, with Jakobsen then becoming lead sprinter after he gets the record. It would be a huge story and I imagine Quick Step's sponsors would love that. Would also make for great TV in the Drive To Survive style documentary series that will be produced following this year's tour for Netflix ;) At the end of the day, Jakobsen is still young and has years more at the top of the sprint game. I hope they let Cav have a crack at the record.

@Ken Kaniff I am not sure, carapaz I wd guess but only guess. Or Yates. I can’t find enthusiasm for the race, pogacar and roglic are best and not there. Mvp there, but he can’t climb, he’s v interesting to watch and follow but when climbs come he’s x mortal
Vor yearKen Kaniff
@Paul Solon I'm thinking Ineos is NOT interested in tomorrows stage WIN. I would think it is Yates opportunity to take leaders jersey but i dont think his team is strong enough to defend it especially this early in the race so this one I'm not sure about but if I had to name ONE I'd say YATES!! Carapaz is MORE suited for a LONG climb like this one (did I hear that it's 20km climb cuz that's a LONG climb) but it's not high enough in elevation I don't think (I'm not sure how high it is in elevation, but if it's a 20km climb it is probably high in elevation) but again YATES is suited for long climbs. I'm going to stick with Yates but I dont feel 100% about it. If it's a high elevation climb then it's all about Carapaz! I'll be back here tomorrow to admit if I'm wrong. Come look for me here after the stage and we can talk. Cheers🤘🇬🇧 PS/I'm a bit partial to Yates cos I'm British but also partial to Ineos cos I'm British😂😉🤘🇬🇧

British bias is always fascinating to witness… Whether it’s football or cycling there’re always a lot of Brits claiming they have the best team/sportsman. Does the UK use propaganda to make it seem like Brits are the superior race or is the system of education of such low quality that many have trouble rationalising? Given the prime-minister and his peculiar actions, you would think the latter is definitely true. Cavendish is a legend though and probably one of the best sprinters ever. And I certainly do not dislike the country, it’s just curiosity with a bit of exaggeration

He is so powerful, but has much to learn about positioning for the sprint. Bright future ahead of him, i think at least one stage at this Giro is his

Ofcourse and girmay is young man he can the best in the future he has a time

POSITIONING IS EVETYTHING. Bini is young and needs experience and he got some of that today.

All Girmay could do was loiter due to his slightly boxed in position. But he was right up there and i'd expect him to win one at some point ! Well done CAV

Biniam got boxed in, he could have won the race.

Can sprinters claim the record for the most overall professional wins? Surely that has to go to riders who win over different disciplines of a grand tour
Vor yearFlakey101 +2
A win is a win regardless of how it is achieved.
Vor yearKen Kaniff
Win is a win is a win!! Cav is the GREATEST SPRINTER EVER! HIS STATS PROVE that
Vor yearHidden Paths.
Why?
Vor yearKen Kaniff
Even tho a win is a win there are differences. You could win 5 stages in a WORLD TOUR race AND also win the OVERALL (1st place) for the 3 week race so it wouldn't be right to classify that as just 6 wins. That's why they are classified differently. I'm having a hard time explaining it I think. Not sure I'm doing a good job of explaining it. Wins are classified as "stage wins" and "overall wins". There is also the breakdown of "stage wins at a world tour"

Quickstep is wasting Cav, why don't they want at the tour the france? He's just one win away from breaking that record.

Belgian team. Doesn't want another Belgian losing his record, perhaps? let's face it, Belgium doesn't have many records to start with.

Cav legend 🙌 👏 🤧 😍 ❤ .
Vor yearKen Kaniff
So many people said he's "done" and "washed up" but he was battling EBV for 2+ years! Look what he did at 2021 TDF and he's clearly on form this season!! We WILL see him break Merckx record!! He's back with the Wolfpack, the greatest sprint leadout team in the peloton. He is ABSOLUTELY a threat this season!! 37 YEARS OLD next week and CONSISTENTLY beating lads thst are 22 like Bini. A TRUE LIVING LEGEND!!🤘🇬🇧
Vor yearLove El Roi +9
I promise you Bini will beat cavandish ... they squared him today and he was holding his paddle twice and am sure Bini will have a new plan now ....
Vor yearKen Kaniff +2
CAV will be retired before Bini starts to win regularly. Look at the age difference, he's 15 YEARS YOUNGER than Cav! Cav is a seasoned sprinter! Bini needs experience. Lets see if Bini can match Cavs stats throughout a 15 year career and maybe then we can talk. There's no comparison right now. Cav at Bini's age . . . Cav would be dragging him to the line every time and even now at 37 (37 next week) Cav is still beating him cuz the kid needs experience! Don't compare 37 year old Cav to 22 YEAR OLD Bini and even if you do the fact is Cav just beat him. Cav is a LEGEND and beating sprinters 15 years his junior!! Lets, see if Bini can do that in 15 years IF HE'S STILL SPRINTING
Vor yearnot really +1
Bini has not shown he is a top level sprinter at all. He is not there yet. May never be.
Vor yearLove El Roi
I understand wa u saying but regardless Mark my word bini will beat cavandish at any point and am sure he will resign then .. cus to be beaten by bini is…. I don’t know .. let’s watch
Vor yearKen Kaniff
@Love El Roi you say "Bini will best Cav at any point" but he just LOST to Cav in this sprint🤔!! You're not using your brain. The younger lads are SUPPOSED to beat Cav! The younger lads come in and improve on the sport but Bini is NOT at that level yet. He just got smoked by a 37 year old. That's not a good look for him😂 BE LOGICAL! BE PRACTICAL! BE SENSIBLE! Bini is NOT ready yet! He needs experience! We still have to see IF he will be a great sprinter. Just cos he MAY be faster that doesn't mean he's better!! There's A LOT MORE to sprinting than just speed. You've got a lot to learn about sprinting

I’m tired of sprinters drafting for 99.9% of the race.

Vor yearCooro Fox
But then Cav could not get the wins and everything falls apart, it's not guaranteed to go his way.
Vor yearFlakey101
@Cooro Fox Why could he not get the wins? Every top sprinter outside his own team mate is here and he still won..
Vor yearandrew7taylor
@Flakey101 Philipsen, Merlier, Groenewegen and Van Aert aren't here. Still impressive nonetheless, but no need to pretend that a Giro field is the strongest field possible when it's obviously isn't.
Vor yearFlakey101
@andrew7taylor I had forgotten about Groenewegen, I hold my hand up for that one. Van aert is not a sprinter. Merlier could be a threat but not if Philipsen there, and Philipsen is not a threat.
Vor yearandrew7taylor
@Flakey101 Maybe Van Aert is not *just* a sprinter. But hard to say that someone who's won 4 Tour de France bunch sprints, including last year's Champs-Elysées is not a threat to him. Philipsen has beaten Cavendish 3 times this year, so it's a bit rich to say that he has no chance to win.
Vor yearPaulos Asmerom +5
Biniam is the best rider in this 3rd stage, have you seen him he was alone for abaout 400m,that mean his team left him early (before 400m to end line).team of cavandish pull him or help him still 100m for end line.and also closed him in abox. you can see again properly from one km for the end line

Stick to the topic, don’t bring “ethnicity or race”. I am Eritrean and like all Eritreans a huge fan of Bini and the rest Eritreans riders. Yes, from the looks of It, he was boxed in and he had no where to go and he could have won the race. But he is smart and he run his race and live to fight another day. I am sure he will have a stage win, no doubt about it. He is in great shape and incredible “mental clarity and confidence” to win.

He boxed himself in by being in the wrong place. Cavendish had a rider on each side about a wheel back. Biniam put himself between those riders right behind Cavendish. Obviously he had nowhere to go, but the other guys held their line and that's exactly what they are supposed to do. Totally clean racing and nothing for the officials to look at.
Vor yearepincion +5
Nonsense, he & his lead out had bad tactics- its their own fault - such things happen ALL the time in bunch flat sprints

He finished 8th. Watch it again, looking for his red lotto jersey, and you can see he was over 20 wheels back when Cav started his sprint. He finished very fast, but it seems to be a common occurrence where Ewan is the fastest but his positioning costs him.
