@Ded Account I've seen 2 different artists pool together their artistic expertise to make one. They even had the gumballs and darwins that belonged to each nicole there while the ACTUAL SHOW GUMBALL AND DARWIN WERE ALSO THERE. And the actual nicole came in at the last minute. It was hilarious beyond the nsfw stuff.

It actually makes sense. That’s always been a pet peeve of mine when anthropomorphic animals have mammary glands on the chest. Only primates have that. Most mammals have them around the abdominal area, so if they were to wear clothes, they wouldn’t be noticeable.

When I saw The Copycats episode, I didn't even know about Miricle Star so finding out it was an actual ripoff and the writers of Gumball made an entire episode dedicated to ripping it off made me respect them even more

Well there was nothing they could do about it so they decided to embrace the fact they have a ripoff of themselves

I remember Gumball also did use a scene from Little Panda Fighter in an episode where they realise they're too poor to afford the proper versions of things and could only afford bootlegs, such as the "Game Child". (Also, I'm pretty sure they referred to it as "How To Ratatoing Your Panda" in the episode.)

The so-called clips of "Little Panda Fighter" that he "displayed" in this episode are actually those exact clips from that Gumball episode that you're referring to which makes it even funnier

They basically bring both ratatoing and little panda fighter character model as their own animation(the panda farting to the mice is not in the movie),also both of the studio who made these cannot sue CN mainly they're knew they're poor and even it worked,it wouldn't take long that movies they made are rip offs

The designs in miracle star are actually pretty cute. Like the Gumball clone is nice to look at and I think they could have had a great show if they… made their own show. Not a copycat ad. Also the Gumball episode taking the chance to switch voice actors right at the end was incredible. Perfect,

Ngl, I was such an unobservant kid that I didn't realise they switched voice actors, and I completely missed the joke of them saying "we're irreplaceable". Now I freaking love it, and the two other switches were also genius.

The fact that the original show's creators absolutely made fun of the ripoff made me smile and laugh.

It was so clever to use Anais as the final piece in the puzzle, not only because there *was* no copycat of her, but because she’s the only one small enough to unlatch the truck. I always wondered why she was my favorite character when I was little...

Gumball exceeded due to its team, every part of it. Writers absolutely nailed it and made some of the most memorable jokes in Cartoon Network’s history, animators made it gorgeous and memorable, and voice actors really made the characters something else. This show is timeless.

Not only did the makers of 'Gumball' poke fun at 'Miracle Star', they also poked fun at the fanart made by their fans. They didn't do it in a very demeaning way, but just have a laugh about it. Man, I love this show so much! After learning that 'The Copycats' was supposed to make fun of a rip-off, it makes watching the episode better!

I love how I the end, the Watersons survived because they had ONE additional child. That's both hilarious but also kinda fucked up once you know the context of WHY there is no Anais. I also wanted to add there is some irony in this all starting from ads. If I remember correctly, Gumball and its characters exist because most of them were failed ad concepts the crew compiled together. So this all starting from an ad just feels like some weird other world prophecy.

Honestly I just want CN to make a streaming service with *everything* they've ever done on there. I would *totally* pay for that.

@Kiba Sorata I think Richard is closer to Homer than Peter. For one, both him and Homer actually cares about their kids and won't use them as the butt of a joke intentionally. And talking about zero character development, Peter went from Homer rip-off to an abusive husband and father, who says he learned his lesson after doing something utterly dangerous and moronic only to revert in later episode. Rinse and repeat. Richard doesn't change but he's not a hypocrite.

Peter got stupider as the years went on, he actually was a decent character in the beginning of the show. I don't think Richard is funny either, but I don't outright hate him like Peter.

I remember watching Copycats on TV and I thought it's just another one of those chaotic episodes, which I loved and enjoyed. BUT I had NO IDEA that it is actually based on Miracle Star, a copycat of Gumball in China, I have never heard of it until I saw your video. That episode just became so much better with its jokes and jabs, great job animation and writers team of AWOG, loved it. Thank you Saberspark for making this aware! AWOG is my favorite show in that era along with Adventure Time and Steven Universe.

One thing I liked about Gumball was how it bridged the gap between one-off episodes and and over arching stories, like how Tina eased up a little to Gumball and Darwin in later episodes after the one where they finally got to know each other a bit more and made up for rivalries they had in the past, just to name one example. That direction with how the show's episodes were structured and plotted out really lend itself to the overall Advent-Garde style Gumball was known for.

Gua Gua (Darwin’s knockoff) got renamed to Ribbit in “The Knockoffs”, which I find kinda clever, since “guagua” iirc in Chinese is an onomatopoeia for the sound a frog makes, like “ribbit”. Kiki got renamed to Chi Chi though, and I’m not sure why.

The only big difference we all know about these two shows Gumball: A cartoon sitcom that has chaotic writing and is lovable by all for its humor and satire Miracle: A bad copy of Gumball where it had lazy writing and animation because its only purpose was to advertise milk

I think you forgot one very important thing about why Warner didn't bother to sue them. You might be right with what you said about it not being worth the effort but I'm sure there is a even bigger and more important reason. The chinese market is HUGE when it comes to movie theater releases and the chinese government probably told Warner they could no longer show their movies in China if they want compensation for the Gumball rip-off.

Never dove much into the ripoff version so nice to be informed of it here. And yeah, the part that Anais wasn't in the ripoff was hilarious. Amazing how China can rip other people's ideas off and yet China itself controls what characters are in our movies when they're released over there.

I remember being disgusted by the art style of Gummball and finding the characters and jokes to be boring. But it's always nice to hear other perspective, especially since I've heard that it's a good show.

The writing is really sharp. Watching it an an adult makes it way better. And the RPG episode is one of the best things to air on TV.

Best thing that Saber didn't mention is that the original storyboards for The Copycats actually used the original Miracle Star character designs for the Copycat family. Which means that the attack could've been EVEN more direct.

I only just recently starting watching Gumball in the breakroom at work. The first time, I was laughing so hard that I just sit in the lounge and watch it until it's time for me to go on shift. Many of my co-workers see this and claim that at 37, I'm too old to watch cartoons to which I respond "BULLSHIT!"

I think the character design is different enough. It is the poses, facial reactions, and animation that's the problem. If they use the same design but with wholly different animation / storyboard, it would have been fine.

As a Gen Z’er, “Phineas and Ferb” and Gumball are the two biggest nostalgic shows for me. I actually didn’t realize until fairly recently that the episode of the show where the Waterson’s have to deal with a bunch of doppelgängers of them was actually intended as the writers’ response to Miracle Star. That makes that episode so much more funny.

Could it be that the Anais analogue *did* exist but was *removed* from the family when Gua Gua came around because China values sons more than daughters, and that's what Gumball was hinting at by her blurred out photo on the family profile page? _This has pretty dark potential._

This also brings to mind how Capcom responded when SNK made Ryo Sakazaki, whom was considered to be a rip-off of Ken and Ryu: Capcom made Dan Hibiki, whom was designed as a cross between SNK's Robert Garcia and Ryo Sakazaki, and portrayed him as a joke character.

Man, I remember watching this episode when I was younger. Truly an entertaining one.

I actually saw this episode before knowing about miracle star but somehow I felt like I missed an inside joke. Similar feeling to when you hear friends making a joke you understand but somehow felt it was also an inside joke that you weren't a part of. This episode was how I came to find out about miracle star! Though I could follow along without knowing about the ripoff show. I ended up rewatching the episode and it was even funnier, and the Anise bit made sense because that was the only confusing part.

The early 2010 era of CN is the best period. My god, so many memorable and amazing cartoons. CN made my childhood and got me very interested in the English language.

Note: this isn't about "US jurisdiction," and US being "the big player." Almost all major nations have international laws where they point out and respect the copyrights and patents of people from other nations. China just doesn't care.

This is my FAVORITE show of all time. Watched it ever since I was 7 (13 now) it was so ahead of its time in comedy. It was one of and one of the only shows that has shot lost movie. Also btw the amazing world of gumball literally made an episode on the ripoff.

I watched the episode Copycat without any context of this situation. Revisiting it now with context makes it a millions time more meta and entertaining - Gumball will always be the most ORIGINAL masterpiece to ever grace CN

Chinese courts don't uphold international copyrights, even then, as much as it's a shameless ripoff, it's still different enough that it wouldn't count as infringement in the US either. The copied the style and tone, but the characters are different.

There is one joke in the episode, “the lesson” that has a bear eating a cupcake characters cherry from its head popping it on the door. Darwin urges they go in the room and gumball replies “not after what that bear did to that guys cherry.” Like holy shit, I couldn’t believe that slipped that one in.

Being a copycat is scummy but legal. How can it be taken down under copyright claims? Thats a dangerous path to take...because a mega corp can claim that ANYTHING becomes a ripoff, and you cant publish your own work.

To me, copycats are tolerable, if scummy most of the time. That’s because our world is owned by mega-corporations hellbent on perfecting their trademarks and expending their much abused copyrights everywhere.

The episode of Miracle Star and his brother breaking a DVD and making their own version of the movie is not original either. the name of Gumball episode is "The DVD". In Gumball, the scenario is more focused on them trying to lie and hide to their Mom that they can't bring back the DVD, and the "solution" to remake the movie themselves is a short moment at the end.

HOOOOOO Boy! Let me tell ya, those Chinese copyright "laws" have been a double-edged sword for my hobbies. Get awesome stuff for cheap that big corporations would charge a liver for, but then creators in the hobby lose business to shameless copies.

You know two of those episodes you mentioned seem like either direct ripoffs or heavily “inspired” by episodes of gumball. Like the food contest one feels really close to the the episode where gumball lets the ghost character use his body so she can try food again (mainly the stomach demon things at the end), and the dvd breaking one is literally a ripoff of the pilot episode where gumball and Darwin destroy a rental DVD, and try several things to get away with it one way being recreating the movie they destroyed.

I stopped watching cable when Gumball came out, but that clapback with The Copycats makes me so damn proud of the original creators. I hope more animators can do the same to their ripoffs.

I'm 31 and took time to watch it. It's very entertaining visually and structurally. Essentially, "what if the Simpsons were up to date, META, creative, and not overstaying their welcome/relying on pop culture" - the answer is Gumball.
