It’s funny to me to see all the Tesla hate. Guess people are scared of new things. I wonder how many of the haters have only seen a Tesla as it drives by and yet are experts on Tesla vehicles. The idea that “regular cars” are a shining example of perfection is laughable. Anyone remember Ford Pintos bursting into flames when they got rear ended? Ford knew and decided not to fix it. At least Tesla owns it and tries to make it right.

Don’t worry globally we need 80 million cars. TSLA cannot even produce 5 million even after 10 years. Warren Buffett backed Lancaster produced Chinese BYD will be produced in Lancaster in California. BYD is the leading EV in China and will replace TSLA soon. In addition NIO, And Hummer from Well managed experienced GM is soon available. They know how to produce quality cars and will beat Tesla in no time. Place an order with the Chinese BMD, they will be available soon from Lancaster.

What will cure the the quality control problems is tesla curing their what the hell manufacturing organization. It is really hard for me not think it is some type of politcal set up because what I experienced in my 3 week stint was shocking. Long story short in August all the "supervisors" couldn't be older then 22...were on their iphones at their supervisor desk/ My last day I had enough when they were timing me on my breaks (even though the line was stuck all the time meaning your just standing there) and one the "supervisors" had the longest ghettoest what the hell nails ever. How did she "earn" her position with obnoxious nails like that when any normal person would be fired with any nail set on the spot? Yah. That are the values of the assembly line for model Y. You have a product that is manifestation of degenerate who thinks they are winning (que in hood length acrylic nails, the kind that will get pulled over and searched guaranteed in some affluent towns).

Truthfully, every car manufacturer produces imperfect cars, which is why there is a new car warranty on every new car from any manufacturer. Anecdotes on the internet are not a good measure of how frequent or serious the problems are. Nor are surveys of owners on reported "problems" that don't differentiate the seriousness of the problems.

We went and test drove a brand new Model 3 and Y. The quality was the worst I've seen, on a car at any price point. I've owned German, Italian, Korean, Japanese, and American cars, and looking at the Tesla, it is clear within 5 minutes that literally no one is accountable to how these things are screwed together.

Funny, I had a neighbor of mine buy a brand new Corolla after a week she took it to a touchless carwash their was water coming in her car. When she took the car to the dealership various times they were like we can't find the leak. The whole ceiling was wet, water was coming in from the back ceiling. After looking for a lawyer finally she found one who would take her case but he wanted $5000 up front.

Tesla will learn to " sweat the details", especially when the different giga- factories around the world become fully operational. It's not so much "build quality", almost implies the people assembling the cars are at fault. A car and the machine that builds the car should be designed in such a way that "things just go together", alignment is not and should be not down to the assembler. Panels misaligning is unacceptable, every part is designed to a tolerance and by using camera measurement systems all panels should be located perfectly. If charge bay doors don't fit correctly it's down to there not being enough fitting points. Tesla is the new boy in the block, it will take them years with the best will in the world to work out all these engineering issues, compared to VW who have the manufacturing of cars sorted. If only VW and Tesla could work together, share tech. manufacturing knowledge, maybe even the supercharger the network, they could take over the whole automotive industry between them. If only Herbert and Elon could meet up at some airport and discuss it, but hey no, that would never happen.

For someone who worked in car manufacturing environments in different countries , it is easy to identify why so many issues arise with new models and their quality. Unacceptable to a point but this is not a specific Tesla problem. The fact that errors are fixed on the line is also common. No matter how much you prototype, test and put pre-production vehicles on the road on 24/7 runs, there will always be conditions missed or other elements affecting the production cycle. I am not here to defend Tesla but the fact that the company is still "young" from the automotive industry perspective, they are poised to come up with solutions to these quality issues sometimes faster than the "Big 3" in America.

I pretty much had/have all the typical issues people report with my Model 3... paint, panel alignment, vibrations and rattles, loose trim. I still need to get my trunk realigned. It would be nice if the vehicles were nearly perfect but there just isn't anyway that is going to happen if they continue to focus on ramping up production. Maybe we should start refusing delivery of vehicles with so many issues.

Just look at a list of recalls on ANY given vehicle and youll see all car companies have shit for quality on certain componenets. FORD sells defective engines knowingly, GM has starter problems in camaros ( cant design a good starter yet?), direct injection is known to fail at low miles causing engine malfunction. Lying on window stickers has been a thing legacy auto does to upsell their products. Tesla will be my next vehicle and ill keep a spare in case it needs repairs. I fix my own stuff so until i can fix my tesla (out of warranty) ill have another vehicle as a backup. no big deal.

Teslas QC and customer service is a joke. When booking a service to get my seat belt buckle installed (which they had missed at the factory), they gave me a cost estimate to approve... They also refused to give me a loan car during service. Simply unbelievably bad. Also have misaligned panels, misaligned steering wheel and water going into the backlights on my 2020 model 3, but just don't have the energy to deal with Tesla again.

I took delivery of my April 2016 reserved Tesla Model 3 which was one of the first ones being delivered in Texas back in September 2018. It has some imperfect panel gaps / alignments but I accepted delivery because I was fine with it. My two brothers got their Tesla Model 3 in December 2019 and both of theirs are immaculate. So the slight fit and finish defects mine has are part of being early adopter. In terms of real problems, I haven't had any but I have had visits from Tesla Mobile Service. 1) I contacted to get service after I hit a pot hole that burst my front-passenger tire. They came to replace with spare, but I had to schedule going to service to buy replacement after. 2) They scheduled home service to add my Dual Motor badge, fixed something in the charge port, and checked something on Frunk latch. 3) They scheduled home service to upgrade my autopilot computer (free as part of my FSD). 4) My car notified me my 12v is low when I tried to apply latest software update. I scheduled service and they came to replace the 12v (no cost). My two brothers haven't had any service visits for any reason on theirs yet. I am very happy with Tesla customer service, but I also want to avoid being an early adopter for my next Tesla.

Asked others have mentioned, JD Power requires a company to PAY them money in order to be included in surveys. In the hopes that your product will beat out others, which you can use in your advertising. This is so flawed and when I even learned of this practice while working for a company that does in fact pay JD Power, I was floored. Given that Tesla won't pay them and they can't honestly leave Tesla out of a major survey like this, and how Ben points out that they don't even have accurate data, they just threw Tesla in the bunch at last place. This is exactly what's going on. Regardless of if it's Tesla or not, always know that anything touting JD Power rankings is essentially saying that they paid a truckload of money to JD Power.

Made the fourth appointment for the same issue as Tesla keeps cancelling my service. Trying to get the new FSD cpu upgrade for city driving as promised by Tesla. 2018 X is glitching like crazy. Tesla has cancelled appt three times for various reasons. Now they can’t get me a loaner or a ranger knowing I live 3 hours away and the exchange is an overnight repair. This is 6 hours of my time for a “free” upgrade that they cannot seem to do. I bet they don’t have the parts.the next appt is not for 3 more weeks. I go to the end of the queue, I guess. Hubby ordered an S and after 4 months of waiting and being told twice it got lost after being told to pick it up, he bought a Lexus in disgust. The lack of communication is appalling. A simple convo with a real person could handle so much, but is impossible to do. I love my X but need a ride, not a $128k broken toy.

I own a tesla very happy barley any maintenance charge at my house i don't pay anything to go to work and back thanks to solar panels. I highly recommend the model 3. Electric is the future and tesla is the best on the market.

Thanks for the video. Basically what you say is that if someone wants a new car but cannot tolerate errors they should wait 6months to a year before getting the car so the production line can refine the process. It is not unreasonable but there must be some reason why Tesla is at the bottom of the QC lists... It means probably that more people than the initial 6 months customers have issues that are not being properly or quickly enough fixed. If you put Tesla as a package including, tech, price, range, space, charging network and QC, they beat the shit out of every other EV manufacturer besides on QC. It would be really unfair for everyone if they were on top of QC also. I think thats how Elon sees it. Plus it costs a lot to have 100% QC.... I think the solution is simple and every other manufacturer is enforcing it. Tesla needs to put 6-12 months into manufacturing planning before production instead of jumping into it after design and software development. Then they will nail it. With that being said i just ordered my Model 3. Fingers crossed! :)

@CosmicMicron Mass produced automobiles aren't built by highly trained craftsmen. The workers are hired off the street. Maybe they need to take a physical stamina test to see how they will fare on their feet all day, but the workers are just like other folk who are looking for a job. They work in a production system which has deconstructed the job functions so as to be almost full proof. If one car has nice looking paint and some other cars on the same production line has paint flaws, something is broken with the manufacturing process. This is the fault of the manufacturing engineers, the workers perform the same function over and over again. The machines and tooling should produce the same results over and over again, day in, day out. Back in the days of Studebaker, the quality of the vehicles was inconsistent, but common cars didn't cost that much. You bought a Buick or Cadillac when you expected better fit and finish. Now, even the cheapest Kia is expected to have the same build quality as the next one, day in, day out. That's what automation is supposed to do. Honestly I haven't looked at a Tesla up close. Maybe its not that bad at all. I've just read that the Tesla build quality is not the best.

@Timothy Keith I am quite sure this is a conscious cost/effect decision. To improve delivery time vs cost and profit they take the chance on that out of 100 people that take their cars with faults 20 will complain and 10 will demand to get them fixed thus profiting the cost of an otherwise perfect paint job for the rest 80 cars. Smart? I don't know. On the long run it builds a bad quality reputation. Maybe Elon is willing to take that hit vs all the other features these cars can offer.

So JD tried to force Tesla to comply into providing private data from customers by giving them bad press (because serious news media doesn’t exist anymore). almost defamatory. If they used data collected via a random “motor” far forum, everybody should know by now that it is unlikely that most users comment there to say how happy are with they cars. Even in the brand-fan dedicated forums is almost impossible to find a higher ratio of positive/negative posts. 😹 The reals news should be that car companies are sharing private customer data with JD.

I am looking forward to the day when Lexus gets their EV technology up to spec: when that happens, Lexus quality should make such problems quite rare...and if it happens, Lexus customer service should make such horror stories of defects not being fixed properly or in a timely manner even rarer. Tesla is lucky their core technology is so advanced that people are willing to put with so much much...but that lead is not guaranteed to last.

Ben, I believe you are wrong on the build quality of Model S (it is in production for 10 years now). I am in the middle of shopping for a new car and so far I have test drives a Prosche, an MB AMG, a BMW M, and a Model S; all of them are in the 100 K price range. The Model S build quality is a joke! The roof of the Tesla is lopsided to the left, you can clearly see the right side of the roof is 2-3 mm too high and the left is too low. the front of the car is also noticeably misaligned to the right, I can see little droplets of water inside the right light housing, and the paint job is BAD I ask the salesperson "You guys want to sale me a 100K car with this kind of quality?" His response is " You will love the car after the test drive." It sure sounds like they are trying to pull you to their church. To be honest it drives nice and its raw performance is better than both MB and BMW, but only on par with the Taycan. At the same time, the build quality of the 3 other brands is flawless; Even an entry-level 25K US made car has MUCH MUCH better build quality.

Sounds like amateur hour at whatever service center you go to. Tail light not mounted correctly? That's a joke. I'd like to meet the kids they have fixing these cars. Too much work to pull a dash? I can yank a dash out of an E70/71 BMW X5/X6 in 15 minutes (no exaggeration, I've timed myself). I really wish Tesla would get their act together. The technology is unrivaled. Everything else is subpar. Huge disappointment.

why are we still talking about your early model y problems? These problems no longer happen with aug/sep/oct cars (read the forums) .. my sep 4th delivery was perfect. This just spreads FUD and generates views.

Water potentially getting into the vehicle is an issue. I’ve seen a video of an owner in England with a model 3 and every time it rains, water gets into his tail light assembly and into his trunk lid. He even lifted his trunk lid and water was sloshing around inside the lid. I’d say those are significant panel gap issues that SHOULD be fixed but apparently not.

Tesla has been making cars for how long now? And still can not improve on panel gaps, glass breaking for no reason, misaligned windows that leak,etc. For a man that has multi-billions and still can't step up on quality. I like EV cars so much but come on Tesla step up already!!!

While I agree these are serious issues, I ask you and other potential new buyers to keep in mind that these are early car issues. The newer ones and the ones currently being manufactured don't have these issues.

For a man of data you don't think that a sample size of 8X,000 and 35 different states isn't representative? They had the least amount of data from Tesla and its still came out that badly? Sure, you could say that only those with issues who were pissed off answered the survey (you could say that about any survey also), but then again we're talking about a company who has truly serious evangelists who could potentially subconsciously hide issues owing to their Tesla love. I'm a fan of Tesla but I'm also rational like many others in the comments.

The thing that's made me gun shy about Tesla isn't the sense that they suck at QC. The model Y had a smooth launch because they were prepared for it well ahead of time for a change. After the initial rush jobs, one of which Ben received, 3s shaped up really fast. They clearly know how to handle QC. The problem is that it becomes optional every time they want to rush cars out for reporting or to claim they didn't blow another deadline. There were no potentially minor-accident-kid-killing unattached rear benches or potentially motorcyclist beheading glass roofs flying off of brand new Model Ys at launch. Those things happened at the beginning of new quarters and it's not a coincidence. Somebody's feeling enough pressure to get more cars shipped to cut corners on QC. The Y launch was a big step towards repairing their reputation in this regard and they blew it. And what a gift they've given to Rivian, for whom build quality, QC and service will be a critical part of their off-road focused brand. By all appearances, they intend to nail all 3 on their very first model launch and they're not lacking in the resources or the partnerships to pull it off.
