What Killed the Plants vs Zombies Franchise?

I made a documentary on PopCap itself if anyone's interested. I tried to take as much of the criticism as I could so there's no overextending or straying too far from the topic displayed in the title, as a lot of people have been having grievances with the fact that this retrospective video goes over the full story. Check it out if you're interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dPZfvkuZ0AY&t=387s CORRECTIONS: PopCap were the ones who had complete control over whether or not to add microtransactions in PvZ 2. EA just published the second game while allowing PopCap to do as they please. Something I had also forgotten to include was the input of George Fan. He was the one who implemented a lot of character into the first game, and his lack of involvement for the second game could be a possible reason for why the game has a different (not necessarily worse) feel.

@chatarrra FINALLY someone said it - i was so confused at how i couldnt find anyone mentioning such a important thing, the layoff of George Fan, his musician friend leaving the company (as she didnt want to be there without him) and the general layoffs & replacements once popcap was bought out by ea it effectively wasnt the same company anymore, yet people act like this is somehow their fault when most arent even there working anymore i also dont get how 'ea allowed popcap to do as they wanted' when the reason george was fired was *because* he didnt want the game to be a freemium game

@BlankSilver For fucks sake, this has been debunked numerous times. George Fan was laid off, not fired. He was opposed to to microtransactions, sure, but he literally stated in his interview with zackscottgames that he basically done with PvZ at that point, he was only involved in the concept stage and that was only to get the new team rolling, once production went into motion he left so he could work on other projects. He stated in the same interview that he had a clear goal when making PvZ and he achieved it and was willing to set up a new goal instead of following up on it instead. Also again, microtransactions were all PopCap's idea, and they came up before the EA acquisition. Several former PopCap employees including George Fan have stated that EA has had no involvement in the PopCap's games other than being a publisher. Maybe rat on EA for their in-house developed games and crappy working conditions, not games they only publish and nothing else.

I think the reason Garden Warfare was well recieved was that, despite the feel changing massively, it was still a "tower defense" game in spirit. It's jsut that now, you control the towers instead of a omnipotent builder. This especially applies once you start strategizing in the game. This is why Garden Warfare was well recieved, but Heroes is forgotten.

I did really like Sunflower's new model as when I was younger I always thought the garden warfare model for it looked a little creepy, although I think that has to do with those games literally being a 3D version of the first pvs game's style, and some things will always look a bit cursed when transitioning from 2D to 3D.

Garden Warfare also jumped off the idea of making unique and special characters. Similar to TF2 which had very memorial characters and having them all be completely unique with their own personalities. Garden Warfare benefited from its cartoonish fun and enjoyable style with unique characters and an overall different feel compared to most fps or tps games even though its main gameplay loop was arguably nearly identical. Fuckin amazing game. I still remember playing Garden Warfare. Sadly I never played GW2 but when I downloaded Battle for the Neighborville I felt it was a bit lacking the visual enjoyment and gameplay enjoyment of the first game along with never being able to get into a lobby to actually play when I wanted to.

While the second game does require you to spend $150+ to unlock everything, it still has enough content to be fun. And as gw2 does have paid stuff, its only for cosmetics and plant variants. The plant variants do change some things about how the plant works, you can still play the plant. Plus, you get a good amount of coins for doing things.

I kinda feel like the first game did everything this simple concept had to offer. Some gamea aren't ment to be like Call of Duty or Genshin Impact with all the hype and success. Some games are good as they are and get a little lucky with a balance of virality and well made, simple gameplay. Sometimes things are better left alone, a concept that's sorely lacking in 2020's.

People often forget PvZ:Heroes exists, but imo it did a great job with its artstyle. It mixes nicely the respective artstyles of both PvZ (cartoonish but weird and a bit gritty) and PvZ2 (softer cartoon), and then adds a dash of super hero comics art to make it its own unique style. And it fits pretty well! The new plants/zombies fit well enough, while the returning ones take cues from either PvZ1, PvZ2, or other sources like PvZ Adventures (the weird facebook game?)

What is the most annoying for me in PVZ2 is that...almost all plants have 200 mstery levels and sometimes leveling up a single plant a single level costs you 100,000 coins...which each level gives you 200 coins steadily by far...i have finished worlds and haven't reached mastery level max with a single plant...it's just too much. on top of that you have to collect seeds...it's just impossible.

What sucks about PvZ2 nowadays IMO is the amount of "economy changes" the game has gone through. While at its core, it's a very good game that requires zero leveling (though they do help but somewhat makes levels unintentionally easier due to them not being made in mind) to beat Adventure, some of it's cracks really show when you go out of it. Way less gems given in calendars, plants that cost the same amount as GW2 for "early access" (not the plants like Gold Bloom/Electric Blueberry), and the removal of the 100 win streak in Arena really made this game a drag to play sometimes and it sucks because this is a game I love dearly being slowly stripped of stuff that didn't need to.

I hated that you pretty much had to pay to progress through the game. Some of the levels were intended to be so incredibly difficult that you needed plants that were leveled up and the special 7$ plants that were more powerful. I played that game for a long time but still found myself stuck on certain levels for far too long and never progressed through half the game because of how difficult it was to progress and how boring it got to just loose every time now matter how well I played.

PvZ Garden Warfare is actually one of my favorite games of all time. I actually like it significantly more than the first pvz game (which I love dearly). But I really think something was lost when the second one came out. Objectively the game had more stuff, phenomenal single player stuff, a cool hub world, but it just wasn’t as good. I personally think the biggest reason for that is the new characters. The buccaneer and Colonel Corn were nice additions imo, but the super zombie, rose and citrus were unfun either to play as or against. Which you can get past and doesn’t hurt the game much. But the last zombie addition truly destroyed the balance in the game. The Imp was a broken mess of a character who easily outclassed every other character in the game, and in my experience many games came down to how many imps the zombie team had on who won or not. So with the balance kind of destroyed in this game, my enjoyment of it was just so much lower than the first one. While I still played it a lot, my passion for the game died significantly with second game’s release, which definitely didn’t get raised back up with Battle for Neighborville.

I'm 28 and PVZ was a good part of my childhood, however I gotta say something maybe not that liked, especially with nostalgia. PVZ was nice and a ton of fun. Especially without internet it was one of the best games alongside Age of Empires 1&2 and CS 1.6 Portable, however 2 was where I spent a majority of the time. Not that I spent little on PVZ, but I spent so much time on PVZ2. Since I played it so much, I also went through multiple parts of it's history that allowed exploits, meaning I was not really troubled by pay 2 win plants because I managed to obtain them without paying. 1) There were more levels. Yes, they were repetetive, but being a mobile game I wouldn't pull this one out just to play instead of gaming on a pc. Well, okay, eventually I did because it was so much fun, but if you pull it out 2-3 times a day on the train or toilet, you are not really bothered by the levels not giving a big boost. 2) They had a ton of super fun and creative levels you just didn't have in 1. Also some incredibely frustrating and stupid ones, but beating them felt so good. 3) My favorite part: the weekly competition. Now this is where exploits come in. Here you would compete until you lose. I don't remember how it worked, only that you were playing for a streak and then rewarded based on your placement, which was given based on your streak level you reached. You were deemed to fail, but there was a bug in the game that would allow you to continue forever. I sadly don't remember it. In fact, I think I created a Reddit account ONLY for that purpose, let me scroll through it. --> I was wrong, but here are some of my posts: The fights were against bots. Right, now I remember a lot. This might sound bad, but it was actually good. This meant you were also in brackets with a ton of bots and would often end up winning if you figured how to get high streaks, which felt very rewarding. Just imagine thousands of player competing for a top 10 reward. Regardless, reading on it you had to pay gems and I remember the bug involved not paying gems or rather earning more than you had to spend. The bug involved going infinite and while you only earned a few of them (I think like 1 or 5 every x rounds) this would mean you had infinite attempts. 5) My main issue was ads not showing up. Believe it or not, that was a post I made on Reddit and I do roughly remember it. Ads were integral to play more and they wouldn't load for me.

It feels very disingenuous to me to say that EA had no role in the downfall of PVZ. In addition to George Fan being laid off due to visionary differences, there are also two interviews (can’t link in the comments of course) that suggest EA played a heavy role. One employee said that the CEO of EA at the time brought up the idea of “rentable plants” because of a suggestion from his child, and another employee said that they suggested making two different PVZ games, one closer to the spirit of the original and the other with more monetization. That employees idea was disregarded, and they were taken off the PVZ2 team and later asked to leave the company.

But most people are saying the PVZ GW games are what is actually dead, but the truth is kids are going to keep discovering and loving the GW games because of the whole idea of the franchise and a little bit because of the fact that it went from the mobile tower defense kind of game to that. This may happen until video games advance to a whole other level, this franchise can still make a comeback though. In the GW games you can still find pretty big servers, but it depends on what you are using to play. What's worse than this is people saying GW2 and GW3 are "pay to win" and that's why some people quit. I would say it is more of a skill-to-win kind of game but I guess in the end it doesn't really matter.

Your video is still accurate if you remove the EA part, though I imagine they still played a role in some elements in the games. I agree eitherway. I used to think PVZ was a franchise known for not having a bad game, I enjoyed all the games, until 2019 came around with BFN and PVZ3. Ironically, I think Popcap didn't do enough for the franchise and separated their fanbase too much. Consoles and PC were part of the original success, there is nothing wrong with the Garden Warfare games, but for tower defense fans, they were left in the dust. To this day, there's still not a traditional tower defense pvz game for these platforms. Hell PVZ1 isn't even available for modern console platforms, except xbox backward compatibility. Merchandises of the franchise also declined immediately, for a game that has a similar appeal to Pokemon- Popcap never took advantage of it; you can only buy chinese bootlegs of the characters. Plants and zombies are perfect for marketable plushes, they could've had a good source of revenue with this and establish more of a stronger connection to younger audiences collecting them. There's so much Popcap could've done but I think being slow and failing to take advantage of things (except microtransactions lol) is what left them in this position. For fans of the franchise, there's little for them to stay around for because of how slow popcap been for the past years. That's probably because Popcap has so many restructures in the past year.

PvZ 1 was the first PvZ game I played but I have always loved PvZ 2 more, even after controversial updates. I love the extra content to do after Adventure Mode. I actually bought a PS4 simply for Garden Warfare 2 and I had no idea what type of game it was. If it wasn't for GW2, I might never have gotten a console. GW2, despite being different, instantly became my favourite game and replaced PvZ 2. I have loved all the PvZ games made, even BFN but I feel that BFN is to blame for many problems. Getting rid of variants made BFN like any other shooter and the overall design for the game was a downgrade. I think that in order to revive my and many others favourite franchise they need to make GW3 and build upon GW2 and listen to player feedback. They also need to make desperate changes to PvZ 3 as right now it is pretty meh and won't be enough to bring back the franchise.

I'll be honest that when I played PVZ2 back in 2013, I just fell that the magic that made the first game so special (I played the hell out of it on X360 and DS) was gone. I actually loved PVZ2 and back when it came out I played the hell out of that game. Each world felt like a new experience and where quite fun to explore. (Except beach day, I still got PTSD from how GOD DAMN HARD IT WAS) and the bosses offered good chalenge. Sure the increased variety of plants meant that some where uterly useless, like the peashooter but I didn’t realy cared that mutch about it. Also removing the purple lants was ofr me an upgrade because I hated that system. You wree alreday extremelly restricted by the a,ount of plant you could take in any given match, and they serevd to further restricted your ‘deck’ and their ice age long cool down was enougth to earn my scorn. So I would say good ridence. The only real downside is that I was almost required to pass by the pirate world in order to get the dragon mouth (back then it was one of the most broken plant in the game) as it single handedly made game so much easier. I stoped playing it for a while (I got bored like I always do) and tried to return to the game at one point. And by that time paid plants and mastery level had showed their ugly heads. Man I miss the older game, defenitly not what it used to be.

I remember PvZ being my first tower defense game. I liked it a lot but later looking for other TD games I didn't found them as interesting as the original PvZ. Even PvZ2. I thought the genre was not for me and moved on. But Then I found Arknights and it has come full circle. Now being my favourite game by a big margin, AK made me actually realize that TD games are actually amazing. Will i go back when PvZ3 drops? Probably not. But the original game was the reason I got into TD, and probably the inspiration for my current favourite game. So my Hats off to original PopCap.

I really want to emphasize how great the Garden Warfare franchise was until Battle for Neighborville 'cause I'm pretty sure it formed part of a lot of our childhoods. The first Garden Warfare was, for me, the first ever shooter I ever got to play in console and ultimately made me fall in love with that Plants vs Zombies was as a whole. My parents were extremely restrictive with the content I consumed as a child and forced me to play games only according to my age, and Garden Warfare was the closest thing I got from a shooter like Call of Duty or Halo, for example. Garden Warfare remained somewhat friendly for my age, and I remember making a lot of friends back then and even use the public voice chat just to have fun and it was AWESOME. It was very addictive, there were so many gamemodes, and the maps felt dynamic each time, either as a plant or as a zombie. I really didn't care too much about customisation, but the diversity from plants and zombies was for me the cherry on top. I have so many fond memories with the game that I would even consider play my PS3 once again only to play Garden Warfare for nostalgia. For Garden Warfare 2... that's when I felt the game fell flat. Way too many plants, matches fell over saturated, mechanics shifted a lot, if not entirely, and all the maps really didn't click with me. The first game was so simple yet so compelling, keeping you hooked even after hours of playing and the simplicity from its formula made it enjoyable for a younger audience, but as for the sequel, it felt a bit TOO much for me as a kid, and since haven't given it a chance to try it. Nonetheless, it was a huge success and took a very important part on the boom the franchise had on the modern console era. Seriously, if you haven't played Garden Warfare, play it or look up some videos about it on YouTube. It was very fun and was a very crucial part for me on my gaming experience and would recommend it to anyone. Thank you for the deep insight on the video for the rest of the games!

I agree with everything here. Even the fact that I couldn't play most fps games (like halo or cod) so I played pvz gw1 a ton. Then when gw2 was released, I ended up playing that even more with friends and still do since that game made it more appealing to me and my friends for the new playable characters and most other things it added. Even to this day we do fights in backyard battleground, but bfn just sucked I played it q couple of times on switch and pc but yeah completely lost its charm.

I've never really been a fan of this honestly. One day, my friends just told me to get a garden warfare 2 (on Xbox). It's really fun. I don't really like battle for Neighborville though. The reason I don't like that one is because of my favorite part of the garden warfare series. I really like the different elements but they got rid of it. Like one of my favorite characters to play was like vampire sunflower and she wasn't there in the game. It was just the originals. Not to mention that the characters (mostly) looked ugly compared to garden warfare. Again, I haven't ever been a fan of the games. I got it because my friends told me to. I still play garden warfare 2 time to time in my own time (without friends). But I never really play neighborville in my own time. Anyway that's my useless to sends on the plants vs zombies series.

I think what killed the game was that EA regarded the group of players that played the first PVZ as a collective group of gamers overlooking the exclusive groups that exist within the group. Making the sequel a mobile game only alienated the PC and Console players. I played the first game on PC then was forced to switch to mobile for the sequel. I had to improvise and force the game to run on a PC. The sequel was great and better than the first one content wise, but the whole idea of playing a mobile game on my PC was too much to ignore and the magic was lost. Only went as far as PVZ2.
