As you may have noticed, we like to blow stuff up on this channel. So when the International Red Cross approached us to collaborate on a video about nuclear weapons, we were more than excited.
Until we did the research. It turned out we were a bit oblivious off the real impact of nuclear weapons in the real world, on a real city. And especially, how helpless even the most developed nations on earth would be if an attack occurred today.
So hopefully this video demonstrates how extremely non fun a real world nuclear attack would be, without being too gruesome. This collaboration was a blast (no pun intended) and we want to say a huge thank you to the International Red Cross!

For me, it would be the opposite. Just imagine you're at a coffee shop, or at the store or something, and one minute you're alive, the next you're not. You don't know that you're dead, you just are. You didn't even know that you were going to die. Is just one minute you're drinking coffee, the next blackness, you're completely wiped from the face of the earth.

@Ryan Marlin Yes? I have? If you detonate 4 800kt nuclear weapons over a large city with optimal spread it does far more damage than a single 30000kt nuclear weapon. With nukemap. I've explained to you how nuclear weapons (or any explosive) loose efficiency because of thermodynamics. It doesn't scale up linearly. Both the US and the Soviet Union went away from the single bombs in the 60ies with huge yield because they developed MIRV. The largest nuke in Russias arsenal today is 800 kilotons, the US uses 500 kt bombs. If one large bomb where better, they would have stuck to that and used the other MIRVs as pure decoys. TL;DR: You don't know what you are talking about.

Vor 28 Tage
UltraMato
UltraMato

@Ryan Marlin The destructive power of a single warhead on land scales approximately only as the cube root of its yield, due to blast "wasted" over a roughly hemispherical blast volume. A 10-fold increase in yield then increases the radius of destruction by a factor of only a little over two. Nuclear weapons while impressive, isn't as impressive as breaking basic laws of thermodynamics. So you are basically wasting nuclear material by constructing one large bomb instead of several smaller ones.

Vor 28 Tage
Ryan Marlin
Ryan Marlin

@UltraMato no, that's not true at all, lol. A larger bomb is much much more destructive

Vor 28 Tage
UltraMato

@Michael O'Keefe One large bomb is not as lethal as several smaller ones. A large city being hit with a 30 MT bomb will not sustain as much damage as if it would be hit with 3-4 0.8 MT nuclear bombs

There are advantages and disadvantages with everything, nuclear weapons included. While the nuclear weapons themselves are not desirable, massive conventional conflicts like world wars are not either. It is generally accepted major powers do not engage in such conflicts due to the nuclear threat, meaning that in a bizarre way these things actually may be saving countless lives. Whatever the case, there is a price to pay, be it the threat of a nuclear exchange, the prospect of generational conflicts on a large scale or even things we have not considered. The nuclear genie is out of the bottle though, I don't think it can be put back.

Vor 3 Monate
Epicurus78

@The Proof is in the Plants - and fungi I never claimed nuclear weapons would prevent or limit the number of wars fought. I claimed specifically that major powers having developed and produced nuclear weapons seems to have prevented them in directly engaging each other in war, thereby preventing lengthy and large-scale conventional conflicts akin to the world wars, which have cost tens of millions of lives and untold damage. In a way your referral to the Indian-Pakistani (both of which I do not consider to be major powers as referred to earlier) conflicts only lends credence to this idea since no major wars have been fought between the countries after both of them developed nuclear weapons. And who knows, perhaps China would have tried to invade Taiwan long ago if a nuclear deterrent had not been present. You seem to think I do not consider the world dangerous. You could not have been more wrong. The world has always been dangerous. Humans have slaughtered and enslaved each other since time immemorial. You think we have been on the brink only twice? We have had many, many more situations where nuclear war has been a possibility. And while modern conventional weaponry is pretty nasty, in the end it is just as bad as being at the wrong end of a medieval chevauchee and being tortured for your meagre valuables while others have their way with your wife. In my view younger generations in the west do not value the peace and prosperity we enjoy nearly enough. There are advantages and disadvantages to just about everything, which is certainly not to say they are in balance, or even that the same balance applies to everyone. I could die tomorrow, which would be unfortunate for me, my family and friends, though someone else could take advantage of the resulting job opening. Same with nuclear weapons. As long as they are not being used, fear of them being used might prevent developments we would find highly distressing, like having you children die in your arms of starvation. In the end it does not matter. Nuclear weapons are here to stay. It is up to us humans to create checks and balances as well as lines of communication to keep them stored away so that this video does not become reality.

Vor 2 Tage

India and Pakistan are at conflict over Kashmir…, China and the US would fight each other directly if Taiwan as attacked by China. They are not contributing to the fall of conflict and war… kurgesagt already has a video about why there are now less wars and there are many aspects and factors but nukes is not one of them whatever source I come across. We were literally so close to a nuclear war in the Cold War TWICE (Cuban missile crisis and 1983). It is completely insane to act as if there are just as many upsides as downsides to nukes. There is no upside, deterrence only works when many countries have them and that is not only a trait that nukes have. There are also conventional weapons who are already scary as hell and now AI being developed and already in use for warfare („Tech Expert Toby Walsh on the Menaces of AI“). We live in a dangerous world and denying it doesn’t help. Knowledge is power, including here. The people who have watched this video or know about it in general will at least not be confused, they’ll know exactly what has happened. And one can make other life decisions knowing how quickly and easily everything could end. And no, there are not advantages and disadvantages to everything, this is just another example.

It seems like the best places to be are either: A) Hundreds of miles away so a dropped nuke is little more than a headline in your immediate future, or B) Right under the bomb so your death is as painless as possible. If you are unlucky enough to have lost your property but lucky enough to be mostly unharmed, your best move is to probably start walking away from the blast zone as soon as you can. If you can cover even 5 miles a day, you might be able to significantly improve your odds of survival.

THe movie "The Day After" was quite horrific and controversial when it came out. Perhaps one of the most chilling comments about it was that there could be no sequel. Really scary vision, maybe I'm a bit lucky that I live in a village far away from a larger city, in a country without nuclear bombs (unfortunately the neighboring country with probably the most units). A nuclear war would rather break out if one bomb was fired, it's like a domino, just push one knock for everything to go with it. As I used to say: the only thing left to do is pray that we don't have to feel the explosion of the atom as long as we do, and if that happens, be one of the first to die if the bomb hits a region close to us (because it's probably better not to live in the world after the explosion nukes)

@generic username Tsar is pure FUSION bruh. It uses fisson to achieve fusion . So the amount of fallout depends on the fisson reaction in the bomb. So best bomb would be fisson-fussion fusion bomb. Exploded in air Also nukes are really good as a deterrent. 2/3 country signed abolishment of nukes cause they don't have it Lol. Nukes are the reason why we have minor conflicts between superpower and proxy wars. Not real conventional wars.

@aadi sharma The tsar bomb is a fusion bomb. Not pure fusion (no one has made a pure fusion nuke), but fusion nevertheless. A hydrogen bomb. Hydrogen bombs also leave more fallout. Even if hydrogen bombs produced less fallout, they still have a higher yield, they're more destructive, so it's not particularly consoling and comforting to die by hydrogen bomb rather than fission. Nukes are bad, mm'kay?

A very informative video indeed,,. Nukes can literally unleash a hell on earth. Too bad,,, here ,,, some unconscious individuals love comparing powerful nations according to the nuclear capabilities and talked about who's the boss of all. I've just once politely explained it to them that there's no good about nuke attacks or violence related to it,,, we all need a good diplomatic relationship to our neighboring countries,,, but they answered me with insinuations and bullies,,, insisting their mouths not brains.,, That really sucks,,,, I recommend this video to those sluggish individuals,,, watch this to get informed,,, what the nukes can do.

@Gilvids Lets say America attacked Japan and Japan had the nukes and not America and America refused to surrender, and a million people already died, and the Soviets were already killing everyone in the north, and dropping a bomb on two small cities was the only way to end the war, then I (A CANADIAN BTW, NOT AMERICAN) would fully accept the necessity of using them. The nuke is the personification of war, its always ugly but it doesnt mean its never necessary.

@why are you looking here? It seems that you have misunderstood, I agree that leaflets were dropped, I was asking for a source because from what I have seen they did not indicate that Hiroshima was going to be attacked, the leaflets I have read stated that several cities would be attacked but Hiroshima was not listed among them (and how is that relevant in the first place?). And this discussion is devolving into mindless taunts it seems, I never once suggested that the US should surrender, I said conditional surrender (a surrender that makes guaranties to a nation, something that has been afforded hundreds of times in the past) would be possible to achieve without the further bombing of civilians. It was impossible for America's surrender to end the war in the pacific because Russia, Australia, Britain and further allied forces were also either in or entering the war in the pacific. A conditional surrender would have been possible and would have ended the war. I'm probably not going to reply anymore, this conversation seems to be going around in circles.
