@HoBoMiKe Tin is pretty useless on its own but it's very useful in combination with other metals. If you combine tin with copper you get bronze, which is an extremely useful metal: the main reason why the Bronze Age in Europe was replaced by the Iron Age wasn't that iron was superior to bronze, but because iron was more available. And the reason why bronze was less common than iron was because of the relative scarcity of tin. Even in modern times tin still serves a role. It has high resistance to corrosion so metals vulnerable to corrosion, such as unalloyed steel, can be treated with a plating of tin to prevent corrosion. Tin is also effective as a soldering material because the melting point is fairly low but it bonds well with steel.

For the second option, rearranging the peotons neutrons, etc, since gold is more neutron heavy than the elements that make up most of the earth, such as hydrogen, carbon, iron, etc, eventually you would run out of neutrons to create gold atoms, which would create several very unstable radioisotopes that would decay immediately and probably set off a chain reaction.

@Anklejbiter how are you going to run out of electrons, exactly...? Most stable Gold has an atomic mass of 197, 79 of it being Protons. If we wanted to rearrange 1000 Hydrogens into Gold molecules, we'd have 1000 Electrons and 1000 Protons (assuming no Deuterium) and we can just combine most of these electrons to make 590 Neutrons to combine into 5 Gold molecules, with 15 hydrogens left over. You can never run out of electrons to turn protons into neutrons

What I learned was that if the world turned to gold, the economic consequences of an influx of a valuable metal (i.e. that now that there's a LOT of gold, it is no longer rare or valuable, and so world economies would collapse) is NOT the worst that could happen.

Vor 3 Monate

I’m pretty upset by the one major oversight here… if I touch my doorknob, what turns into gold? The knob? The door? The house? The basic principle would be anything sharing a common molecular structure of the touched object should be converted to gold, NOT everything that touches the object that is touched, else that would even include air and water. So what happens if Midas touched the ground? You get some gold grass. End of story.

If touching one part of the ground converts the entire lithosphere, then 1) why didn't touching the air or any other object have the same global effect?, 2) at what speed does the change travel, and 3) wouldn't there be random mosaic effects of areas that are not changed due to airy soil? I learned that it requires an extraordinary amount of conditions to cope together in order to make a planet habitable and no wonder we cannot answer Fermi's paradox "where are the aliens?". The lesson to take away is the same as the lesson in the original: think very carefully about what you wish for, in case you get it. There's a lesson for Dionysus (the god who granted Midas the power) or others in a similar position, as well: be careful what you promise, in case you actually have to do it (as well as the obvious be careful about open-ended commitments). I would say there's a lesson about being careful not to give someone a gift that will make their life worse, but Dionysus knew it would and tried to get Midas to choose something else. He was trapped by his initial promise (any boon it is in my power to grant) and Midas' refusal to listen to a god when he tells you something is a bad idea.

Vor 4 Monate
Milpy

I think there is a way for Midas to work in a non-apocalyptic way. He changes *materials* into gold. By material, I mean stuff made of the same molecular composition in touch with each other. You touch duck? His feathers would turn into gold (by replacement). You touch the grass? Well, the effect would expand until it reaches a an area of not-grass (and the roots are fine). You touch the earth? Well, to begin with, the earth isn't made of a single material, and I don't know enough about it to say what would happen, but I think it's highly probable it wouldn't be an end of the world scenario.

Vor 6 Monate

@Dread Penguinlord regardless of your intentions, you made me think 'Is the atmosphere homogenous enough to get more than flakes of gold? How close the molecules need to be to be considered being in touch with each-other? What does it mean for a molecule to be touching another in the first place, given their actual matter(the nucleus) never comes close? If I consider the magnetic field of a thing to be their 'skin', and to be in touch means that the 'skins' are in touch with each-other, well, the whole planet would become gold in an instant'... so on and so fourth. In the end I gave up and decided 'air doesn't count.' Soo... jokes or not, it made me think, so I consider it a good point.

I think you can just google density of gold, then devoid that by 20, then google what has the density of ###

Vor year

@duddude321 Or you could just put the duck in water and observe the fact that the water only goes about half way up its body. Since water is 1 g/cm3 and gold is 19.3 g/cm3 then we can say that gold is about 40 times as dense not the 20 they say in the video.

I subscribe to the idea that every individual atom is not replaced by gold, but rather that Midas's touch rearranges atomic nuclei and their electron fields so that nearby atoms undergo fusion, thus preserving the shape and size of the original item.

I would think the Midas transmutation wave should travel at the speed of sound in the given material. Not that it would make very much difference in the end, but most of the devastation animated here is to due to the very rapid (instant?) speed of the conversion. If it took 1 to 10 seconds to turn a person-mass or person-volume into gold (cartoon rules: a person being Medusa-ed must be medusaed fast enough to be dramatic, but slow enough to show their horrified reaction as they freeze), almost all of the heating and kinetic damage from a global Midasing would be negated.

The people who wrote myths. I'm not sure anymore, how devastating would it have had to be for a grown man around 30 ad to completely change from mass to energy? I mean they at least created stories that inspired people to ask questions looking for actual answers... Now compare it with flatearthers or many other conspiracy ideologists... Humanity may not deserve such a good channel, but it needs more channels like kurzgesagt.

I guess we are so used to all the fantasy stories where thing's just magically turns to gold, we don't think about if their are consequences even for a second. ...... I find it very interesting that just turning everything into gold, would wipe out humanity, in very different ways. I liked the third scenario the most, A gold covered planet, beneath a 3 km deep ocean, and lots of dead people

I learned that midas wouldn't be able to breathe eat or drink. Touch- "T-ühch" n : "to come in direct contact with". The air touches his lungs, the water and food his lips, his feet the ground, his clothes become immobile, and to what extent is "touch" because his own organs are touching him and his cells touching each other. I also learned that previous generations of humans were stupid. Despite having far more free time than current days, they still could not reason out how physics and metallurgy work, despite having the groundwork done for them. Humans once believed magic can make you immortal, turn everything gold, change your body, and make you fly. All of which is utter fantasy at best, and complete bull**** to most. Bear in mind that dumb humans feared this so much that they publicly murdered innocent people and others cheered as the innocent burned alive. And we call ourselves "civilized". This post brought to you by the scientific community.

There is a part of a Terry Pratchett book where a king gets cursed by an analphabetic deity to have everything he touch turn to "Glod" which was this particular dwarf individual. And im not sure if it turned into something that was a copy of "Glod" the dwarf or something that had the identity of Glod the individual himself. I still think about that sometimes.

But now, what if the moon became gold? Would this increment in mass would change it's orbit and now on a crash course to earth? Would the earth end up having golden rings? Or perhaps the moon and the earth would orbit each other? If Mars became gold, would we in the earth see a second sun (the case of planet implosion). Can Jupiter became gold if it's Made of gas? So many questions, so few answers. (If the sun became gold, would it became a black hole?)
