Fun fact: The water did not turn into gold in the video, as in the version of the story by Nathaniel Hawthorne, after his daughter turned to gold, he prayed to Dionysus to see if there was any way to reverse his curse. Dionysus told him to go bathe in the river Pactolus, and from then on anything he put in water would be reversed of this curse. This explains why the river Pactolus is so rich in gold and electrum, an alloy of gold and silver, as when he was bathing he river got his "gold touch" and the river sands turned into gold.

i feel like, from a logical standpoint, the shrinkage wont just immediately start, but will take time for the gold to start squeezing and collapsing inside, and then once stopping, it will also take a while for it to stop rather than it being immediate, due to it filling up air pockets and vacuums, with it starting to provide resistance gradually and slowly coming to a standstill. though im likely wrong.

So just the crust, or some arbitrary amount of the crust was gold? I think basically all plant life would die, and also mankind would have to get really good at digging to get past the useless gold to the very valuable dirt to attempt to save some plant life. Perhaps with this porus gold it would also be a bit easier to dig past this layer?? I don't know

I'm a little surprised how the video never mentioned the possibility of the moon crashing down to Earth due to the shift in gravity and how it may affect its orbital pattern which can result into colliding with other planets, or even the Sun. Here's an interesting question, how much gold can the Earth contain before the mass of gold start affecting the Earth's gravity? If space voyages, travels, and excavation are a thing of the future, then to what extent can we haul things back to Earth before imported material affects the Earth's gravity and how much more before the Moon is affected by Earth's gravity? And on a reverse note, how much material we send into space do the same which causes reduced gravitational pulls and ultimately sending the moon hurling into the vastness of space?

i love rewatching this :) but finally i got what is wrong with the magic here. you see the original curse is that whatever he touches turns into gold but not the surroundings. surely when he touches a loved one, that person will change into gold, but not the sofa the loved one was sitting on, or the floor, or the building therefore there is clear separation logic which is not handled in the video so by touching a piece of land, it would not turn the planet into gold at best it might turn the continent, but it is quite likely it would only turn some bits which together creates an “object” like touching the loved one’s arm wont just turn the arm, but the person so by touching the surface, he would probably turn the garden or field into gold like if he touches a mountain the mountain would turn into gold and not the continent :) this magic is so special that it “understands” what Midas was touching :) but regardless, turningn one continent would be also pretty interesting how it would alter surface and spinning so i guess a second edit is needed with the selective transformation in place starting from the grass, to the continent (and then the first video is perfect for “what if the whole earth transformed?” :)

you know midas wished for the ability to turn anything he touches into gold, he wished it from dionysus (greek god of wine) and when he couldn't eat he wished for dionysus to take it away, but he couldn't and so he had to bath in a certain lake whcih took away that wish, but turned some of the lake into gold, also the tale of midas turning his daughter into gold was made up some time in the 20th century. so yea thats the tale of king midas

Yeah, sometimes the brutal killing of the ducks seems unnecessary for the content of the video. Like, you don't need to show blood, and "gore" for a science video that otherwise could have been educational for kids.

Wouldnt the atomic weight of anything below the crust be higher than gold (at least on average)? So in the second scenario, would would things shrink? I dont know, thought it just didnt make sense that gold would be so dense compared to everything else.

The lesson that I learned is there's a reason the Gods didn't have him change the Earth for a very good reason, haha. I mean, I don't think even his house turned to gold and he would definitely have touched that by accident in that short time. And didn't he have to bathe in a special river to remove the blessing/curse? Yeah, maybe a small radius would have changed if Midas stumbled but definitely not the whole Earth, haha.
