Two things he did wrong here for people who are wondering why it shut off: 1: the lesser thing he did is let it surface from the oil which in itself really isn’t bad but still not a good idea to have it on when it is first removed from the oil from any point in time. 2: electronics are fine in mineral oil because it’s non conducive as the minerals are not ions. That being said any impurities to this system ruins it. So when he touched the phone he introduced impurities to the system which is why the phone started to malfunction. If for some reason you ever want to make a system with mineral oil clean everything and don’t touch anything, even then it will need maintenance and overall it’s just not fun to deal with

there was already impurities before adding the fluid or touching it, cause the phone it self is greasy, and contain a lot of hidden dirt that loses grip when coming in contact with the oil for a prolongued amount of time

@cade stekly yup that might be that only water in combination with minerals is conductive, while mineral oil isn’t conductive because it doesn’t contain water AND minerals, but just minerals. Other than that I‘m 99% sure that distilled water doesn’t conduct at all. Of course you can put two cables in distilled water, crank up the voltage and eventually there will be electricity flow, but that also works in air, and I don’t think air is conductive

Vor 28 Tage
cade stekly

@Friis Felgner distilled water conducts electricity too, just to a lesser extent. It isn’t the minerals it’s the water allowing the minerals to conduct and short circuit the device.

I made a mineral oil cooled gaming PC build for my senior project in highschool. I had to get a big drum of the oil off of Amazon and made mounting plates to attach to the inside of a fish tank out of plastic glass for the mobo and circulation pump to the radiator. A benefit of oil cooling being that it can pull heat from all surfaces can also be it's weakness if you don't cool the oil enough, as it can cause heat saturation around all the components and actually decrease performance. Also it's apparently possible to swell the capacitors in the electrical components and break them but I didn't have that issue.

The minerals in water dosnt damage it, the fact that it's conductive does A phone, computer, or any device could survive in water as long as there was no jumps that the electricity tried to make, which is rare, electricity likes to try and jump but normally it has nothing to grab onto, since air isn't conductive When you replace that air with water now the electricity has something to grab onto and cause a short

The PC builds in mineral oil needed 2 things to keep them from getting nasty and eventual heat buildup. A pump and liquid cooling radiator with a fan for the heat, and a filter before the radiator to keep things out of the mineral oil. Last seal it up as tight as you can. The one I built was out of acrylic, and I gasketed the lid. Cleans up easier than you'd think when you have to pull the board out in a isopropyl alcohol bath and a detail brush. Was definitely more work, but you could overclock TF outta that thing.

There are 2 things in water that damage electronics. 1) conductivity, you don't want current bridges between parts where they shouldn't be. Mineral oil is non conductive. 2) Corrosion, the minerals in water combined with heat and electrosis, can rappidlty corrode parts in the device. Mineral oil is not known to corrode parts. So it is not likely to cause problems here. What mineral oil can do is change inductive and capacitive properties of parts. Which can cause some damage, though far less than water.
