I mean, a better and less catastrophic solution (albeit a very time-consuming one) is to mine the moon and insert the extracted lunar rock into a lower orbit around the Earth. Although, you may not want those rocks in too low of an orbit or they’ll succumb to orbital decay before the rings can be fully assembled.

That was the dream I saw somethings similar to video

@Todd Boyce True, I cannot predict a nuclear apocalypse, what I meant was that the moon is probably still going to be in orbit by the time the sun dies and humanity would have either moved to a different planet or died out by then.
Vor 5 Tage
Todd Boyce
@Akshit student What was it like? Did the moon actually hit earth? Did humanity drown? Were there M 9.5 earthquakes?
Vor 5 Tage
Todd Boyce
@Vanilla No, we won't go extinct by than. Name a way we could go extinct. And don't just say "Oh there will be a nuclear war" because you don't know if that will happen. So if (And that's a rather tiny if) human species survives long enough for the moon's ascent to become a problem. Well, that society would probably be advanced enough to move to Mars.

It's actually insane how we can actually survive this, or even have a general idea of what's going on just a few hours after "the switch". Even if something awful happens it's very likely that humanity will not go extinct, even if we have a hard time.

@Marius Tan The immediate ground zero was liquified into molten whatever when the asteroid made landfall. You can checkout experiments for determining the effects of hypervelocity if you want the full scientific explanation. I'm just a guy on YouTube comments. Also, moon chunks would be of much, much larger size than the chicxulub impactor.
Vor 3 Tage

@Rohith G How does ground even liquify? The asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs didn't immediately bring hell to earth.
Vor 3 Tage
Rohith G
@Marius Tan Enough chunks of the moon with enough mass moving at enough speeds when crashing into the earth's surface would liquify the ground zeroes on impact from the energies involved. And since it's the moon? Every variable mentioned would be just enough.
Vor 3 Tage

@Shadow Boom Yeah, I'm confused. How would the entire earth be molten? Sure maybe heated up or c=frozen because of the effects shown by the video, but why would the entire earth become a game of floor is lava?

@unkindled Hahaha Earth gets hit by more Asteroids than the moon because earth is so much bigger than the moon. Don't be stupid, rings can't blot out the sun ENTIRELY, let alone make earth never get sunlight again. The remaining countries would likely build a very powerful laser, so powerful that it blows off the ash clouds. My god, you are so dramatic about the rings. You don't know if the rings fall, they must slow down, normally wind resistance slows objects down, but space has no wind nor air.
Vor 5 Tage
unkindled
tides would be unexistent and the ocean level would be fixed. meteor showers would be very frequent as not only pieces of the ring would start falling eventually but we dont have anything protecting us from stray ones anymore (its the reason the moon has craters) most if not all plant life would have died out and the global climate would be completely reshaped by the volcanic ash if the leftover ones + the ring blocking the sunlight dont set a new ice age like mentioned in the video.

I just realized, you know how hard it would be for a civilization to get into space when they have rings?
Vor Monat
Versa Max
@Condor of course it's possible, in fact it's probably a very minor inconvenience compared to figuring out the fuel, the weight, testing it, etc, I'm just saying it's gonna be harder, given the fact there's a massive barrier you can't pass without yet another couple innovations, that has its own set of time and weight and safety and whatever.
Vor Tag
Condor
@Versa MaxWell, it depends on your ship. If we perhaps want to send a probe to study the debris in depth, we could add shock-absorbant layers and Kevlar as used onto the ISS to protect said probe. And, on big enough debris, we might create a settlement. By running some fancy math(Fg=GM1M2/r2), the gravitational forces between the hypothetical debris onto which a settlement could be created and another close with similar mass would perhaps allow for some tether to be attached to as to line them or study them.
Vor Tag
Condor
@Versa Max Yes, and the debris from the Moon would orbit on the Roche limit, and the ISS and most satellites orbit at around 400 km. So, while meteor showers may harm said satellites, they won’t orbit inside the ring system.
Vor Tag
Condor
I think it would be hard, because I think the rings will be mostly present at the equator, where most rockets launch to gain advantage of the Earth’s rotation, but we will still be able to travel into space, by launching in, say, Florida or Baïkonur. So overall, it would be harder, but it’s just a small adjustment that has to be made in order to overcome the challenge.
Vor Tag
tarael86
@Versa Max I see, so there's that difference, thanks.

Shining Armour
Good video, but I'd say it depends on how fast the moon is flung on the planet. If it is slingshot fast, it can bypass becoming a ring system and be one impact body. I say this because of the Mars-size Object Theory that is mentioned could have impacted the Earth to create the Moon in the first place.

Even before the Moon reaches the Roche Limit, it would, in its own right, start experiencing volcanism! This is because all the tidal kneading on the Moon would exert enough friction to heat the Moon's interior to the point of melting. This is the reason why the Jovian moon Io has active volcanoes.

Vor 11 Monate
Michael Torrisi
The thing that really broke it for me with moonfall was the idea of a white dwarf floating inside the shell that is the moon. White dwarves are closer to Earth-sized, just with the mass of our sun. You couldn't make a white dwarf tiny enough to fit in the moon. And the gravity on a white dwarf would be around 30 times that of Earth, meaning the gravitational pull when the moon is close enough (at the end of the movie) to be clipping off mountaintops would instantly shred anyone on or near the surface. It was just too much disbelief to suspend. I suppose you could argue that this midget sized dwarf would have significantly less mass, but even at a 10th the mass, it would still be enough g's to render people unconscious.

It was actually surprising to hear that the answer isn't "Impact destroys the planet". I never considered that it was possible to survive the moon falling. Edit: Since some of you don't seem to understand what "possible" means, yes, you PROBABLY die. Between the tides, complete destruction of several food webs, shortage of drinkable water, earthquakes, super volcanoes, and chunks of moon that will impact, survival is not probable. What's surprising is that the probability is any fractional amount above 0% because I assumed the Moon falling would mean Mars gets promoted to the 3rd planet.

Soup
January 1st, 2012: I have decided to celebrate New Year’s Day by writing a journal. I’m not sure if I will put much interesting in here, so I’ll only write stuff if something exciting or out-of-the-ordinary happens. January 12th, 2012: Something strange is starting to happen. It is most noticeable to people who live on the coastline like me. High tides are getting higher than they normally do and low tides are getting lower than they normally do. People need to be careful to not leave their boats moored too long, or they could be swept away. Astronomers are also reporting that the Moon is getting closer to the Earth at almost unnatural speeds. This may have something to do with the tides, but I don’t know just yet. January 21st, 2012: Normally, the ocean rises and falls half a meter per day, but now, they are rising and falling 4 meters per day. Costal cities are starting to get flooded, so I have decided to move further inland. The Moon also seems to be getting abnormally large in the sky. February 2cd, 2012: The oceans are starting to rise and fall 10 meters per day. Ports are starting to become unusable due to this, slowing down the delivery of lots of supplies. I may not write anything for a few more days, since my pen is starting to run out of ink, and I just ordered a new one. February 19th, 2012: The water is starting to reach communication towers, damaging communication a lot. I don’t think I’ll be writing much, since I’ll need to conserve ink. February 25th, 2012: The decision to live inland does not seemed to have helped much. Lakes are starting to overflow, contaminating plants needed for food. There are a lot of power and gas shortages, as power plants and refineries are often built near coastlines. Getting new supplies is now pretty much impossible. February 29th, 2012: The city has fallen into chaos. Police let people do pretty much whatever they want, as laws don’t really matter anymore. Low tide has turned into scavenging hours, where people gather as much supplies as they like. High tide has turned into a time where most people take shelter in high-rise buildings. The city is split up into clans that scavenge together and take shelter together. I have joined the Ouagadougou clan, which seems to have most of the people who know how to manage resources well, and the best places to get new resources. March 7th, 2012: The Moon is now close enough to disrupt GPS and communications satellites, causing even more chaos around the country. The Ouagadougou clan knows how to work out your position via landmarks, so we have still been able to gather resources. I don’t think I’m going to put down anything else for March. April 19th, 2012: Tides are now nearly as tall as the tallest building, and any clan still doing scavenging hours is risking their life. Me and the rest of the clan have made a boat to lower the new risk of scavenging hours. April 27th, 2012: The buildings are starting to flood. We did one last scavenge, pooled our resources, and built a submarine to take shelter in. Our submarine was swept out to sea by the incredibly fast low tides, and now we can only wait. May 1st, 2012: During a moment of low tide, we ended up on the shore of an Asian county. We didn’t know what, because by that time, it was so chaotic it didn’t matter anyway. We decided to stay where we were, and wait for high tide to come before getting back in. May 7th, 2012: Extreme earthquakes have sprouted everywhere, triggering a lot of volcanic activity. Due to this, we now only get out of the submarine if we absolutely have to. May 24th, 2012: The submarine has been damaged, so a member of the clan was sent out to scavenge resources from a nearby abandoned oil rig. When he returned, he reported the volcanos have gotten so bad, it’s impossible to tell if it’s night or day due to the thick clouds. The extremely bright light of the Moon occasionally shining through the clouds makes it even more difficult, as we can’t tell if it’s sunlight or moonlight. June 19th, 2012: We have been swept away to a place with less volcanos, so we can now see the Moon. It seems to be frozen in the sky, so the tides have settled, too, one half of Earth completely flooded, the other completely dry. We are in the middle of an ocean caused by nonstop high tide, so we are glad we made a submarine. July 27th, 2012: The Moon appears to have contorted itself into an egg shape. That’s about all I have to say. August 3rd, 2012: We are now being constantly thrown around by the incredibly fast tides, causing motion sickness in a lot of the clan. Volcanic activity has become enough to block out the sun everywhere. The result is a permanent, global winter, with a lot of acid rain. No plants are alive at this point. I don’t know if things can get much worse than this. November 25th, 2012: Nothing bad happened, but it’s my birthday today. Not that it matters much at this point. December 9th, 2012: Earth’s gravity is now enough to overpower the Moon’s, so a lot of things from the Moon can be seen out the window. December 25th, 2012: Misery has ended. Out the window, we saw the Moon getting torn to shreds by Earth’s gravity. Oceans are rapidly going back where they came from, and we ended up in some post-apocalyptic city. We can’t leave just yet, because the planet still needs to recover. January 1st, 2013: It’s nighttime, and the acid rain has finally stopped. The toxic clouds have cleared away, and it’s time to leave. We emerged into a winter wonderland, the ground covered in snow, derelict buildings everywhere, and a spectacular view of enormous rings, more beautiful and shining brighter than a full Moon ever could, and nonstop meteor showers everywhere. It’s clear society will take a while to recover, but at least we will get to do it with a spectacular view of what’s left of the Moon.

@Kurzgesagt - In a Nutshell Absolutely Totally Awesome Video, loving it. I recently watched a Apocalyptic movie called: (Moonfall). Although this is not a totally accurate representation. Cause there was technology imbedded with the core of the moon itself. but would like to hear you thoughts about it. Also, would really love if you could do a video on: (If the Earth Core stopped spinning). As well there was another movie I watched quite some time ago called: (The Core), which the Earths core stopped and they restarted it with nuclear bomb. I'm really interested in learning what would actually happen and if it's possible to restart the Core?

I mean, a better and less catastrophic solution (albeit a very time-consuming one) is to mine the moon and insert the extracted lunar rock into a lower orbit around the Earth. Although, you may not want those rocks in too low of an orbit or they’ll succumb to orbital decay before the rings can be fully assembled.

That was the dream I saw somethings similar to video
Vor 5 TageVanilla
@Todd Boyce True, I cannot predict a nuclear apocalypse, what I meant was that the moon is probably still going to be in orbit by the time the sun dies and humanity would have either moved to a different planet or died out by then.
Vor 5 TageTodd Boyce
@Akshit student What was it like? Did the moon actually hit earth? Did humanity drown? Were there M 9.5 earthquakes?
Vor 5 TageTodd Boyce
@Vanilla No, we won't go extinct by than. Name a way we could go extinct. And don't just say "Oh there will be a nuclear war" because you don't know if that will happen. So if (And that's a rather tiny if) human species survives long enough for the moon's ascent to become a problem. Well, that society would probably be advanced enough to move to Mars.

It's actually insane how we can actually survive this, or even have a general idea of what's going on just a few hours after "the switch". Even if something awful happens it's very likely that humanity will not go extinct, even if we have a hard time.

@Rohith G Good point.

Vor 3 TageMarius Tan
@Rohith G How does ground even liquify? The asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs didn't immediately bring hell to earth.
Vor 3 TageRohith G
@Marius Tan Enough chunks of the moon with enough mass moving at enough speeds when crashing into the earth's surface would liquify the ground zeroes on impact from the energies involved. And since it's the moon? Every variable mentioned would be just enough.
Vor 3 TageMarius Tan
@Shadow Boom Yeah, I'm confused. How would the entire earth be molten? Sure maybe heated up or c=frozen because of the effects shown by the video, but why would the entire earth become a game of floor is lava?

Question is even if we survive would the earth be habitable to us still? Life would probably bounce back but the question is if it's complex life and if we're part of that.
Vor MonatTodd Boyce
@unkindled Hahaha Earth gets hit by more Asteroids than the moon because earth is so much bigger than the moon. Don't be stupid, rings can't blot out the sun ENTIRELY, let alone make earth never get sunlight again. The remaining countries would likely build a very powerful laser, so powerful that it blows off the ash clouds. My god, you are so dramatic about the rings. You don't know if the rings fall, they must slow down, normally wind resistance slows objects down, but space has no wind nor air.
Vor 5 Tageunkindled
tides would be unexistent and the ocean level would be fixed. meteor showers would be very frequent as not only pieces of the ring would start falling eventually but we dont have anything protecting us from stray ones anymore (its the reason the moon has craters) most if not all plant life would have died out and the global climate would be completely reshaped by the volcanic ash if the leftover ones + the ring blocking the sunlight dont set a new ice age like mentioned in the video.

Vor MonatVersa Max
I just realized, you know how hard it would be for a civilization to get into space when they have rings?
Vor MonatVersa Max
@Condor of course it's possible, in fact it's probably a very minor inconvenience compared to figuring out the fuel, the weight, testing it, etc, I'm just saying it's gonna be harder, given the fact there's a massive barrier you can't pass without yet another couple innovations, that has its own set of time and weight and safety and whatever.
Vor TagCondor
@Versa MaxWell, it depends on your ship. If we perhaps want to send a probe to study the debris in depth, we could add shock-absorbant layers and Kevlar as used onto the ISS to protect said probe. And, on big enough debris, we might create a settlement. By running some fancy math(Fg=GM1M2/r2), the gravitational forces between the hypothetical debris onto which a settlement could be created and another close with similar mass would perhaps allow for some tether to be attached to as to line them or study them.
Vor TagCondor
@Versa Max Yes, and the debris from the Moon would orbit on the Roche limit, and the ISS and most satellites orbit at around 400 km. So, while meteor showers may harm said satellites, they won’t orbit inside the ring system.
Vor TagCondor
I think it would be hard, because I think the rings will be mostly present at the equator, where most rockets launch to gain advantage of the Earth’s rotation, but we will still be able to travel into space, by launching in, say, Florida or Baïkonur. So overall, it would be harder, but it’s just a small adjustment that has to be made in order to overcome the challenge.
Vor Tagtarael86
@Versa Max I see, so there's that difference, thanks.
Vor TagShining Armour
Good video, but I'd say it depends on how fast the moon is flung on the planet. If it is slingshot fast, it can bypass becoming a ring system and be one impact body. I say this because of the Mars-size Object Theory that is mentioned could have impacted the Earth to create the Moon in the first place.

Even before the Moon reaches the Roche Limit, it would, in its own right, start experiencing volcanism! This is because all the tidal kneading on the Moon would exert enough friction to heat the Moon's interior to the point of melting. This is the reason why the Jovian moon Io has active volcanoes.

@Ketamime I meant the fact that people would not start floating up into the air because the earth's gravity is too strong. But yes, I know what you mean when you say that is a dyson sphere made by aliens and it has different gravitational properties to the actual moon.
Vor 11 MonateMichael Torrisi

The moon doesn’t move sideways around the Earth… it goes in a straight line within a curved geometry caused by Earth’s mass…

I absolutely love how the music at 8:56 starts off as peaceful and hopeful to haunting at10:23 when we see an Earth resembling Saturn. As this video demonstrated, an Earth with beautiful rings comes at a colossal price.

This was such a scary experience for me, as someone who is fascinated by the moon and seeing the way it could affect us if it begins to shine a little brighter or appear more larger will always remind me of this video, the transition from assurance to earth having its own rings will forever scar me

@Paulo Azuela Let’s stick with the first part. If they lie, why would you trust them about anything? Space and the globe are belief systems because no one’s ever seen them apart from on a screen. All we’ve seen is flatness. I agree they’ll do anything for profit, that’s just another reason to question what we’re being told.
Vor 11 MonatePaulo Azuela
@Sam What do you mean, it's genuine that you don't need one right? And ofc the government and sciences always lies. Just wanted you to see the Earth's surface if it's truly flat. You won't die in space, those politicians are lying that we need suits for them.

Also, would really love if you could do a video on: (If the Earth Core stopped spinning).
