Impractical because electric cars are way more expensive, batteries get worse over time (a bus would wear it out real fast) and the tech we have for trolley buses is more than sufficient. Matter of fact, those trolley buses ARE electro buses. A lot of them can still drive around for a bit without wires before they run out of power.

I live in Canberra, the national capital of Australia, which is built around several town centres. The Territory government put in a tram, er sorry, light rail, between the newest centre and the main one, with plans to extend it to all of them in the fullness of time*. I thought and still think that this was a great, if not in fact bleeding obvious, thing to do, but of course the usual suspects that still want us all driving petrol-powered cars haven't stopped complaining. *It's not a *network* yet, because there are no nodes with more than two edges.

Sure, they’ll murder a few thousand people, but after that the buses can be converted to hydrogen, and fare prices will go down fifty percent. Just tell Boris, he’s a champion of private initiative.

Electric cars also destroy the environment through resource mining, manufacturing processes & going to landfill in mass droves. Their pollution is unnecessary as is the urban space squandered on parking & other paved over autocentric wastes. They perpetuate urban sprawl & cities that aren’t navigable as a pedestrian or bicyclist & are inhospitable to humanity. Electric vehicles add to traffic congestion. Putting the financial burden of transportation inefficiently on the individual is regressive & hasn’t been the norm for even 80 years. We need to invest in rail that’s properly implemented as it is overseas. The people are disgruntled from decades of disenfranchisement & a lot of that marginalization (eg Robert Moses’s racist urban renewal) is through divestment of public works/infrastructure, utilities & programs to help the people. Commodification of societal needs and normalization of rampant consumerism for privatized profits is what put us in this mess. We need to know we have a future & an equitable shot at thriving. Transcontinental High Speed Rail should integrate seamlessly w/ commuter rail networks so it can even function as one cohesive system & this will convert flyover country back into a thriving heartland which will reduce clustering on the coasts. Similarly, wholly integrated circuits of interurban commuter rail routes blended with light rail lines, streetcar grids & even trolleys prevent people from having to live on top of each other in city centers in order to have quick access to urban cores & local economies downtown. Our roadways are overcrowded & no amount of widening them w/ added lanes will do anything to help it because it just leads to induced demand that inevitably grinds to a halt at snags & bottlenecks down the road. We can rebuild cherished structural heirlooms of civic pride destroyed by financial & environmental disaster on space reclaimed from motor vehicles to serve purposes of social capital & green initiatives. We can resurrect local landmarks with green technologies such as hempcrete.

My brother bought a Lambretta scooter in Johannesburg in about 1952. It was brand new, and as he proudly drove it home from the show room, he was conscious of its tiny 150cc engine, that would still have to be run in for a few hundred miles. He under-revved it and stalled it at traffic lights in the middle of town. A big American car immediately started to blast its horn behind him. My brother kick-started the scooter - and stalled it again, and the guy behind was practically foaming at the mouth. My brother got off the scooter and pushed it to the side of the road, and the guy went past shaking his fist out of the passenger's window, foot flat on the accelerator, the big V8 straining at the leash - straight into the back of a stationary tram car (like the one on the thumbnail to this video) He discovered that they are very substantially built.

Vor Monat

@Jay Foreman good points

Vor Monat
Jay Foreman
Jay Foreman

The pollution being somewhere else is a good thing. Ruining air quality around a power station in the middle of nowhere is massively preferable to ruining air quality in streets where people live. Also, electric power can be, increasingly is, and one day will all be, generated cleanly. But diesel will always be diesel.

HAME on Ernest Marple! Now with this climate crisis, this also happened in the States as well from the 20-s until the early 60's. its called the GM NCL Scandal if DEelectrifying America's Public transport systems in 81 major American cities. Virtually all electrified PT has been destroyed by climate destroying diesel busses! TRAGEDY! (I must say that electric transport is making a slow return. Though the intercity and cargo railways have NOT been electrofoed even today! That's a blasted shame! Actually GOOD NEWS for UK; There currently (2021) nine major metropolitan centres in Englan that have new tram systems! Newcastle upon Tyne is one of them. Honey, can I kiss and hug you? You have drawn the paragraph right out of my mouth! I am in the (late) beginning phases to found an international not-for-profit educational organisation called ITEM. The main purpose; to promote all forms of human transport electrification and rid this planet of this destructive fossil-fuel usage! You are so cute anyway! as well (Hope you don't mind me stating so). Well maybe Richard is your current partner, of course, I don't know. I still would LOVE to meet you anyway and join forces to push for London's electrification of ALL its PT network! NO DIESEL! Sorry, Dr Rudolf, your time is GAME OVER!

@Leif Cian do you understand the very basic difference between a conduit and a battery?

Vor 29 Tage
Leif Cian
Leif Cian

@Jay Foremanheh, Like what did they say that about? Much bigger difference in technology 200 years ago than 100. They had electric motors 100 years ago, they just didn't have better batteries. Batteries are always less efficient than mains power though and lots of personal vehicles always have less capacity. The littlest kinds of Ecars make sense for a city run about due to less fumes and especially, especially electric bikes make sense the most. I'm not on board with the whole "only electric cars sold by 2030" though, when they won't even start off by setting speed limits correctly and having people drive in a more efficient and considerate way. That could be implemented within like a year, just do enforcement in the first instance at the pump before leaning on police and court time for adherence to basic traffic management... Some things just seem like environmentalism for the sake of more consumerism as much as anything else, it will be bottlenecked by lithium supply as well which would be better allocated to providing more electric bikes as they require much less power for most trips short trips and again better capacity. Anyhow really fun videos my man, very best wishes! 😬
