Dear friends and followers, welcome back to my channel and to a great video about, Flight Control Spoilers.

In aeronautics, a spoiler (sometimes called a lift spoiler or lift dumper) is a device intended to intentionally reduce the lift component of an airfoil in a controlled way. Most often, spoilers are plates on the top surface of a wing that can be extended upward into the airflow to spoil it. By so doing, the spoiler creates a controlled stall over the portion of the wing behind it, greatly reducing the lift of that wing section. Spoilers differ from airbrakes in that airbrakes are designed to increase drag without affecting lift, while spoilers reduce lift as well as increasing drag.

Spoilers fall into two categories: those that are deployed at controlled angles during flight to increase descent rate or control roll, and those that are fully deployed immediately on landing to greatly reduce lift ("lift dumpers") and increase drag. In modern fly-by-wire aircraft, the same set of control surfaces serve both functions.

Spoilers are used by nearly every glider (sailplane) to control their rate of descent and thus achieve a controlled landing. An increased rate of descent can also be achieved by lowering the nose of an aircraft, but this would result in increased speed. Spoilers enable the approach to be made at a safe speed for landing.

Airliners are almost always fitted with spoilers. Spoilers are used to increase descent rate without increasing speed. Their use is often limited, however, as the turbulent airflow that develops behind them causes noise and vibration, which may cause discomfort to passengers. Spoilers may also be differentially operated for roll control instead of ailerons; Martin Aircraft was the first company to develop such spoilers in 1948.[1] On landing, however, the spoilers are nearly always fully deployed to help slow the aircraft. The increase in form drag created by the spoilers directly assists the braking effect. However, the real gain comes as the spoilers cause a dramatic loss of lift and hence the weight of the aircraft is transferred from the wings to the undercarriage, allowing the wheels to be mechanically braked with less tendency to skid. But in flight 90% of the time you are in autopilot - are not the flight controls precisely controlled by the fms or the control system itself Capt Joe. Sorry I am a newbie to this.

I used a spoiler )airbrake= on my 747 onmy sim )that now refuses to load any longer, Ihave to buy a new sim. I made a PERFECT landing with autobrake at th Vancouver airport on runway 26L. It was so smooth that I was unaware that I had even touched down! I only figured that out when the nose slowly settled on the nose gear. I also stopped a very short distance on the runway as well! (this of course with braking and thrust reversers as well- - autokrake system).

I believe IL-62M is the one without automatic speed brakes and still operating in rural Russia (less then 10 active duty aircrafts in the whole world) but it is old! I couldn't find exactly the quotes to support that claim, however couple of papers mention, that the automatic air breaks system was intended in the next redesign just before the plane was discontinued.

Hello Captain Joe. I just viewed a video about the Air Canada flight 621 crash in 1970. I am confused about how the accident occurred. They made a reference to arming the spoilers and deploying the spoilers. What is the difference?

I have a question @Captain Joe. Sometimes when I’ve been on a plane my biggest fear is the landing part as at times I feel the pilot has landed at such fast speeds with a combination of speed brakes, reverse thrust and hydraulic foot brakes. I can be almost jolted out of my seat. I have to push on the head rest in front of me so I’m not jaunted forward so hard when the aircrafts speed is rapidly decreasing. My question is what element or process is the one that causes that vigorous slowdown. Is it’s speed breaks or reverse thrust.?

Vor 3 Monate
ZK-APA
ZK-APA

Actually its the wheel brakes which creates the most stopping force. So when you feel an aggressive slowdown during landing, thats mostly because of a higher autobrake setting (for an airliner) which may be required for either a short runway, or if the aircraft is expected to vacate the runway at an earlier point

I was aboard what was supposed to be a non-stop when the pilot announced we had to make an unscheduled stop to have a passenger removed. The pilot said we were too high and close to the airport for a normal approach, so he was going to deploy the speedbreaks so we could lose speed and altitude quickly.

Hey cap. I'm now 62 and went to flying school in my early 20s. Used to by my passion in life. I have develope a huge fear of flying. Remember the value jet in the everglades? That did it for me, never able to get over it. Haven't been to get back on a flight. Anyway on a different note. What do you think about activating the wheels before touch down, with a radar picking up the ground speed? This would save on tire cost, therefore lower ticket cost.

I once had to wait at the airport because something on the left wing had to be replaced. The pilot said the panel actually did its job because it did what it was supposed to do. Lucky for us it only took 2 hours because they had the panel in the airport or capital stock so they could quickly install the panel. After boarding we were sitting in the best spot to watch it, we noticed *these* panels (from this video) being tested rigorously. So I think that was the panel they replaced.

During discount flights from third-world countries, pilots will announce when all the window-seat passengers are to stick their arms out the windows of the aircraft. and turn their hands in a vertical position. This maneuver must be executed quickly, and in sync. If any passenger's arm stays outside the aircraft too long, the arm can freeze up and break off. Should this occur, the injured passenger will be replaced by the passenger from the middle seat in the same row as the injured passenger, and the replacement passenger's arm is to be extended outside the window and hand positioned vertically. If the timing is off by an excessive amount, the aircraft will probably crash and all passengers will most-likely perish. If this happens, the airline is obligated to give all deceased passengers 1 frequent-flyer mile for every mile short of the destination they flew due to the crash.

Once a captain thought he was funny and superior by telling me that the speedbrake lever is the stick of shame. I (as a mature 10-year-copilot) immediately corrected him, that for me this lever is a stick of good descend rate and I dont feel ashamed of anything. Luckily most captains are not like this

Why on the 737 do they hiss while moving as if they are pneumatic? Is the speed of the hydraulic oil through valves and pipes so great that you can hear it circulating? I don't think it was the air rushing over the surfaces, as I could only hear it while the surfaces were moving.
