What he failed to realize is how the batman mythos basically covers the one weakness of this trick. He says "why wouldn't they just start looking around for him?" If you were talking to THE actual real life batman and he just disappeared mid conversation what would you do? This is a world where men and women with crazy super powers is pretty commonplace, and odds are you wouldn't be someone who knows anything about batman. You don't know he's just some guy in a suit with gadgets, for all you know he might actually be a bat mutant that can just zip away faster than sound. And then even if you were betting on him not being a super-powered monster what would you do once you found him? Would you really want to find him? He is THE batman who goes toe to toe with gods on the daily! Would you really wanna risk playing peekaboo with that? I would just hope he's already a mile away punching some thug and leaving me alone lmao

I've never believed that Batman is just hiding, I think he is completely leaving in such a stealthy or unexpected way (jumping off roofs, using his gadgets) that the person didn't notice. I also enjoy believing he isn't doing it to be dramatic, he is just done with the convo and leaves immediately while the other person is still catching up.

Vor Monat

The way I always read it in older iterations was that he just doesn't have enough hours in the day. In that CEO time is money sense, he literally has everything he needs, the conversation is winding down, it's time to get back on the clock. The only difference between his departure and a manager noticing the time is he has Ninja and Stage Magician training so ingrained in his act that he would actively have to try to alert someone he is leaving. A lot more modern movies just sort of use it as "ooh, mysteries," but in TAS specifically it almost always felt like "right, talkings over, back to fighting crime."

In my experience, you don't even need to hide, you can just leave. When someone's talking to you, they assume you are still there even when their back is turned, so if their attention gets caught by a task, you can have a lot of time to just leave. I do it all the time by accident: I'm walking alongside someone, talking to them, and the side I'm walking on runs out of room so I switch sides behind them, they turn back to speak to me and get the Batman reaction, sometimes I switch back to the side I was on and they take another few seconds to find me, but I would always have enough time to slip into the crowd or behind a nearby wall or something

The camera man kind of threw an unknown variable into the victims reaction. It maybe should have been done with a hidden camera and just Jake and the victim. That would have made for some really good "left alone in the dark" reactions of WTF. I bet lot of them would have just got the heck out of there right away and none would actually look for him. So if it works, for the most part, in practice here, then for sure Batman can pull it off. This is especially true when you consider the following. Being a masked crusader of the knight (won't refer to him as a super hero), it brings an aura of mystery and inherit expectation of being elusive. When nearing the end of a conversation and he disappears, in the night environment that is home to him, the person left there would accepts that he has just made his exit. This would discourage going to look for him. Even if his exit was too far to believe he made it there undetected and that it would be more viable that he was hiding behind something nearby. Who would really wants to find Batman in a crouched position behind a rooftop A/C unit. Even though it would most likely be expected the first time, for sure it would be expected for every next encounter with him. Again the person would not go searching for him. If jake would have done the same experiment in full Batman costume, they would have more accepted/expected/realized and then just shrugged it off right away that he did a Batman disappearing act, if they know the character/movies well.

It's actually really fun to do this! When you are having a walking conversation and you stay just a bit behind them. You can drop back and stand on the opposite side of them and continue to walk. The thing about this "trick" is that, every move Batman makes is calculated. If he meets you at a specific spot, you can be sure that he has several exit routes planned. He can "disappear" not because he's a ninja, but because he specifically chose a spot where he can do exactly that, if the need arises. So yes, Batman is just that good.

Vor 6 Monate

@Ayurai You seem rather upset about people showing how it’s possible for Batman to simply get out of a conversation unseen. It’s not hard of a thing to deduce, and I don’t know why a comic would spend explaining how Batman can do it. Is there a Superman comic where everything Superman does is explained in great detail? If I’m going to accept that aliens getting super powers from the sun, then I can accept that a billionaire crime fighter can find a way to ovoid their super vision. You’re literally on a video that asks about how realistic Batman disappearing is. Don’t why you expected people not to be answering the question. 🤷‍♀️

There is a comic where Batman was with two kryptonians.. they look other way... look back and batman gonne, annoyed they using x-ray to look for batman and DONT FIND HIM they state they using X-ray vision + telescopic vision and can see hundres of miles away for all directions, and cant find him.... batman just like to bullshit his way out.

I did this to my friends for years before batman started doing this (yes, I'm that old, get off my lawn). It is part of positioning yourself so you have a clear path to exit while out of view, a distraction so they are not looking at you long enough to exit unobserved, and dexterity so that you don't make much noise (amount of noise allowed is dependent on the severity of distraction).

I think there is a moment in the animated series where someone actually looks out for batman after he disappears and he is already in another building using his grapple gun. All this time I assumed that whenever he starts a conversation he already had his grapple gun tied to another building and he just hide the cable using his body. When the other person looks away he just activates the pulling mechanism and gets away from the scene. The grapple gun makes a lot of noise when it shots, but if Batman shots beforehand and keeps the gun on his waist or belt then he can just push a button and get away.

I think that would've been a tiny bit more amusing to the person close the door behind them to make it even more puzzling how he disappeared with hearing the door open and shut. Now, that said, back in my military days I would do that all the time to my partner. I would vanish mid-conversation with her. It was hilarious to watch from a distance and see how long it would take her to realize that she was talking to the sky. Alternatively, I would stop being where she last saw me and suddenly be behind her or next to her when I responded to what she was saying. Ah, good times.

One trope that I would love to see tested is the horror trope where people go towards weird sounds in the dark. as a kid i used to use the batman trick on my friends. between classes when i was in a conversation that i didnt want to be in, when my friends would look away i would throw on my hoodie and then blend into the crowd and casually walk away; the trick is speed and subtlety. they would always come to me after class and freak out about it asking me how i did it. anyone who thinks it's unrealistic lacks imagination.

If anyone is curious why this affects humans so much and as the top comment also says, the reverse effect, is because it messes with your spatial awareness and humans hate not knowing what's in the immediate environment, especially when it changes suddenly with no cause

I use it on customers at work all the time when they ask directions. It's surpisingly easy to disappear when there are so many things to draw someone's attention. The real trick is to have a series of obstructions to use as cover whilst exiting the area. By the time they stop looking around the area, you are long gone.

I troll my employees with this exact thing at work. I'm a supervisor at a warehouse, so there are plenty times throughout the day where my peeps would come find me to show me something at their work station. Being that it's a warehouse, there are plenty of moments of "escape" where I can just vanish out of sight. As I'm following them, they're explaining what their issue is, and I just scurry off and next time they turn around, I'm gone. With all the boxes filling up our racking system, I can easily peep through holes so that I can see them, but they can't see me. Most of the time, they just look around in that 'wtf' stunned state, then eventually walk back to their workstation. The BEST times are when they actually spend some time looking for me, which gives me extra time to make it back to their workstation before they do. I just wait there for them to finally give up looking for me and when they return, I'm just like, "Hey, what happened to you? I've been waiting here the whole time!" Admittedly, it's become a lot harder to do now, because now when they get me, they have me walk ahead of them enough so that I never leave their field of view lol. I must evolve my technique.

Before I fully get into the video, I'd like to mention that it's not how fast Batman disappears that's questionable for me. Speed alone, I fully believe he, and probably anyone could disappear with only a couple seconds if you're aware of your environment enough to escape someone's line of sight. The part that's hard to believe for me is being able to move quietly while doing that.

In my personal experience, sometimes I've simply quietly walked away when someone wasn't looking at me, and they didn't even notice. Turn around and don't see me? That's because I'm already somewhere else, doing something else. If you have no trouble moving quietly, you've actually got most of stealth covered already.

Well, in most situations where Batman "vanishes", it's an outdoor scene, with clear exit routes. Batman just picks the right moment and most of the "trick" is just being quiet. There's less hiding than just leaving rudely.

@Dhruv1223 It can be, doesn't mean YOU'RE rude though, you might feel rude cutting someone off whereas I feel more rude just randomly leaving. Generally it's just considerate to say goodbye or something, definitely with 1 on 1 conversations at least - in groups it's more situational, sometimes its better to let them talk their subject and head out, I'd say if attention is on you announce leaving and if not let it be unless you want to say "later guys." With Batman I agree it's definitely his mind on his job and time of the essence type thing, I'd say it's rude but it's not like totally offensive either. Kind of a 'well that was a bit rude, but whatever' and move on about your day kind of rude, naturally after the confusion of a full sized man disappearing right behind your back.

@Diana Pennepacker I mean, I'm positive they could just say "Oh, Lucius already made a grappling hook made out of plastic so it wouldn't be so noisy" or some shit like that, but I feel like the best strategy is either using stun grenades or using environmental sound, even when the sound the grappling hook does can't blend in with literally anything but an explosion or a plane flying at like 20ft from the ground

Vor 6 Monate
Diana Pennepacker
Diana Pennepacker

@Ya Boi Kiba There is always going to be this issue. I agree with you. Batman should use a flash bang plus smoke everytime he pulls this stunt. Or have some crazy ass device. Still I feel like him just gliding out plus the grappling hook is the best way. Although that grappling hook has to be loud as fuck.

The first time Batman meets and then disappears from someone (Gordon being the obvious candidate) he usually jumps/drops from a height and glides or grapples away. So even if Gordon looks for him behind a vent or chimney etc (because jumping off a 8 storey building would be insane) he won't find him. By the time Gordon thinks to check below and run to the edge (there's always distance between the two of them so a vital extra second is gained) Batman has already moved further down the street and is a dark shape in the darkness. After that Gordon knows Batman just disappears (he even mentions it to Dent in the film) so the next time or the time after, Batman can literally just hide in the shadows and Gordon won't bother looking because he believes there's no point. That's how it always made sense to me anyway.

I love this one haha I know for a fact is real easy to pull too, since I've been walking while speaking with people, ending the conversation and changing course (not being rude, just doing something else since the topic ended) and a few seconds later hearing the person asking "what, where did you go?" fully expecting me to be still walking with them

Vor 4 Monate

There's definitely some truth to this. This video actually reminded me of a very nice part of the Arkham games. Especially in Arkham Knight, Batman disappears at the end of cutscenes in which he's talking with other characters, but since you actually play Batman, and the game needs to focus on you to let you continue playing, the camera actually goes to him, revealing that he's actually sitting on a ledge below or a pipe just above. Imho, normal people's reaction would probably be the same as you guys, but he pulls the disappearing act on people that are pretty used to it, like Gordon, and they probably just sigh and move on. But damn, finally some Jake redemption. I was starting to get real annoyed by seeing him because he only meant sponsored segments. Finally made me laugh and not cringe!
