If we can get it running... the possibilities are endless! Fire extinguisher duty. Extra camera man. Can pass tools. Could turn it into a large-form 3D printer, or even a robotic CNC machine. Could give it a sword. Could turn it into a VR simulator... so many options! Comment your ideas below!

I was under the impression that 480 V only exists as 3 Phase wiring? On the other side: your american wiring is somewhat strange. Why would anyone find 110V acceptable, I'd be worried that my vacuum cleaner would melt the wiring ^^
Vor 3 yearsJan Kühnemund
the Hacksmith Had to do some conversion there. For normal sockets 1.5mm^2 gets used, for sockets at which a washing machine, a dryer or another high consumption device will be plugged in 2.5mm^2 gets installed. 1.5mm^2 is about 15 AWG (is that GA?) and 2.5mm^2 should be about 13 AWG. I didn't know that at 110v there would only be 16a. I always thought that the low voltage would be balanced out by a higher amperage.
Vor 3 yearsHacksmith Industries
+Jan Kühnemund Thanks! 480 is typically 3 phase, but like we said in the video the controller seemed to accept single - might not have worked with the robot attached though! Just curious though, what's standard wire size in German for 220v15A? Everything here is 16ga for 110v15A
Vor 3 yearsJan Kühnemund
the Hacksmith I honestly didn't expect an answer. So thanks for that. While I normally abhore it when people tell YouTubers how much of a fan they are if they get an answer, I have to say that your and your team's work is very inspiring for me (I'm currently studying computer science in Germany). Hope that you get that jetpack going! And yes I do understand that 110V is the standard over the pond, but I don't understand why, considering that copper has become a rare Ressource (and insulation hasn't)

You should be able to use a transformer to step up from 240 vac to 480 vac without any issues. During robot zone mod builds my company typically powers 4 to 8 robots on one 240 vac to 480 vac transformer

I actually program these robots for a living, I've personally traveled to Toluca Mexico and programmed the Nachi robots for the Fiat 500 back in 2010. For such an old robot you have there... all i have got to say is good luck finding parts, and yes there is a ton of safety in the controller but if it is anything like the newer models like the ones i have programmed, they can easily be jumped out. I haven't touched a Nachi in years so I do not remember much about them, I mostly know Fanuc robots now.

I used to deliver pallets to that plastic company. With what I know about how hard they run their machines, I'd be amazed if that piece of crap even works. They were probably selling it for a reason, and that reason most-certainly was not because they were upgrading lol. That very forklift that put the pallet on your trailer almost took my head off when it lost a drive wheel a few years ago. If you want any helpful advice, in the future, whenever you go there, make sure you stand where nothing can hurt you, or one of those dumbasses will see to it that you get hurt. You have no idea how many people die every year, in North America, as a result of forklift accidents. To top that off, most people who die in forklift accidents are not the operators themselves, but the people who get crushed/pinned to death when the operator fucks up.
Vor 4 yearsRuben Kelevra

Perfect minion, could bake cookies and stroke the cat...love it guys, great video, really thought it was going to end in tears towards the end :)
Vor 4 yearsListen Buddy,
You mentioned in your comment that it could possibly hand you tools and put out fires, just by a controller. Although a cool idea, I feel as though in a real fire accident, it would take too much time to grab the controller and put it out. Is there any possible way you could use a raspberry pi program to have a simple voice activation script attached to it?
Vor 4 yearsListen Buddy,

You should talk to some of the other big youtubers, like RiceGum or KSI. They makes tons of money and are always trying to find ways of wasting it away. They might be interested in giving you guys like 10k considering Ricegum blows $700 on shoes every other day. No joke though. If you tweet at them they might respond. Vor 4 yearsJames Bradwell
Looks like you could do with a gantry crane in your workshop.
Vor 4 yearsHacksmith Industries
I wouldn't trust them either... buildings have to be built specifically to support an overhead crane, thats why usually a steel structure is added into the building to support the gantry. Something we don't have room for and don't really need for the amount of heavy lifting we do. Hoping to get a high-lift pallet jack at some point, all we really need in the shop :) Building #2 will have a shop crane :)
Vor 4 yearsJames Bradwell
Surely the walls will be though? I would have thought in Canuckistan walls on steel framed buildings are designed to withstand pretty significant snow-loads. I'd see about attaching some rails to the walls and have a gantry that moves on those in one axis, and a winch carriage that moves along that gantry in the other.

+James Bradwell if only our ceiling could support one

Vor 4 yearsMatthew From
Re-wind the transformers in the controller to work off of single-phase 240 or 120. I had an electronics teacher in high school who got a very similar robot arm from a local university. Initially, it did not work but then he re-wound the transformers and it booted up. A couple of us did some pull-ups hanging from it... good times.
Vor 4 yearsHacksmith Industries
Well once we take it apart we'll quickly find out! That would be an ideal scenario!
Vor 4 yearsMatthew From
It would depend on the way the controller transformer is wired. If it is wye, then you could undo the wye, and break it out so that each one of the 3 core windings are fed from the same 1-phase supply (honestly, not sure if that would work, there would be no path for the flux in the core to go). You could also remove the two outer windings and re-wind the center winding to provide the voltage it is expecting. Also, the controller probably just does 3-phase rectification for a high-voltage DC bus to power the arm, so all you really need to do is feed that rectification stage by...a re-wound phase fed by 240 (preferable) or 120.
Vor 4 yearsHacksmith Industries
+Matthew From haha nice -- that doesn't solve the 3-phase issues though :(
