How far can these electric cars go before they die?! We drove the Tesla Model 3, Audi e-tron, Jaguar I-Pace, Nissan Leaf, Kia e-Niro and Mercedes EQC across the UK to see how long they could last! Sure, the smart money is on the Tesla, with its claimed range of up to 348 miles - but can the manufacturer's figures really be trusted? Will victory instead go to the sporty-feeling I-Pace, or the posher EQC? Or will the more affordable likes of the e-Niro and Leaf pull a major upset and make it the furthest? There's only one way to find out...

I have a question though. When pushed you're saying "You guys". It's also clearly visible that there's at least one more person inside the Tesla. How many people were in each car during the trip? I'm asking because weight plays an important role in the distance of a car. If there was one person in the Tesla (instead of 3) it would have easily gotten 40-50 miles further (about 20-25 miles if 2 people).

@Ltgrider oh absolutely I can see where you're coming from. It's just important to put it into perspective that your typical 60kWh battery pack from a car is the equivalent of a little over 500 iPhone 11 phone batteries all strapped together. When you look at it that way, suddenly losing one of these individual batteries to help you navigate you realise just how insignificant it really is

Vor 3 Tage
Ltgrider
Ltgrider

@Toby Jackson cool thanks as cell phones and say wifi stuff take a lot of juice it seems. Was just wondering how much effect that really has on the range.

Vor 3 Tage
Toby Jackson
Toby Jackson

Things like headlights, wipers, navigation or radio are all 12v accessories. They use the 12v battery not the high voltage one. As such it's just a tiny draw of power and makes no significant difference to the range. Probably less than one mile across driving the whole range of these car's battery packs. The only thing that uses a noticeable amount of power is your heating.

Vor 3 Tage
James Wilkinson

What they don’t seem to mention is that in ten years time you might as well throw all of these cars on the scrap heap as all of their batteries will be dead and the battery, on an electric car, is the majority of the cost. I’ve seen nothing so far from ANY manufacturer that persuades me to buy one. Additionally, they are CRAZY expensive to start with. Sorry, currently, EV’s are a mugs game! Good vid though! 👍

I'd love to have an EV, but right now my oil burner can drive me from Milton Keynes to Amsterdam and back again on one tank of fuel. And it cost me half what a Tesla cost. I'd still like to have the Tesla, but it's as far away for me as a Ferrari is.

Vor 5 Tage
Toby Jackson
Toby Jackson

I think the important thing to remember here is that most people don't drive from Milton Keynes to Amsterdam. The average daily journey is less than 30 miles. When people do travel further on a trip like that, most don't do it non-stop. Plug in to a rapid charge for a little while each time you stop to eat/drink/pee/rest along the way and it isn't actually inconvenient at all. Especially when at home doing your usual running about the towns and cities. You wake up each morning to a full battery and a warm car so it's actually more convenient than a traditional car since you don't need to go to a fuel station. If you are interested in an EV, especially since you appear to live in MK, Take a look at the EV Experience Centre. They will let you take an electric car for an extended test drive for up to a week to try to live with for a while. You return it afterwards with no obligations. The store doesn't actually sell cars at all so there will be no pressure afterwards. As for affording it, look into options like ONTO. They do rolling monthly EV Subscriptions with everything included (even insurance and charging) - This was the one and only way that getting an EV was affordable for me. I have a Renault Zoe ZE40 for £289/Month from them with no long contract or any further expenses. It's great!

Vor 5 Tage
Toby Jackson
Toby Jackson

The reason why the Zoe and Ioniq were mised out was because, especially at the time of recording, the battery packs were so much smaller than all the other cars featured in this video. They wouldn't have been up to the competition. Even today, the largest Ioniq is 38kWh and the largest Zoe is 50kWh. They would still be the smallest of every car in this video sadly. Same reason why other cars like the MG ZS and BMW i3 were missed out with their 40kWh packs.

Um, none reached their claimed range, only two reached 250 miles. What I don't know is how much a charge to full costs. I drive a KIA (Gasoline) and can drive 250 miles to my daughter's house on barely over 1/2 tank at 70 mph. I don't think I'll be wasting my time with a new fangled electric car any time soon. That is unless the Charge is really really cheap and relatively fast.

Vor 10 Tage
Toby Jackson
Toby Jackson

Some public chargers are completely free to use, others are quite expensive at up to 35p/kWh. Most people charge at home overnight though, and with off-peak energy tariffs you could get around 5p/kWh. A 0-100% Charge (Remember most people won't be doing this every night but instead just a small top up each night) could cost 0 at some public chargers, or about £20 for the more expensive ones, or at home you would be looking at about £3.20. It's not just the fuel savings though. You're also saving on vehicle tax, and get other incentives like free parking while charging in many city centres. Not to mention the reduced cost of maintenance since there are far less moving parts and fluids in an electric car too, so they are typically far more reliable too. The numbers quoted above are for the 64kWh Kia Niro. Electric cars aren't for everyone. I fully accept that. But I think most people should try one out if they get the chance. A lot of people end up believing myths and end up thinking that they aren't suitable when in reality they really are, can save them money, make their lives more convenient, and help reduce emissions too. There definitely are benefits to be had.

mmmh. 'Dirty' Electric cars - where is the electricity coming from ?? Pure carbon-neutral they say. (Which you know isn't true, not even close !) Even that the price mentioned means 90% of people can't buy it, nor they are going to. To construct these cars costs us (our world) a LARGE carbon footprint (never mentioned - very dirty mining, etc.) - while an ancient car on petrol right now will reduce it; NEVER will the world transportation, using these 'creatures' reduce our carbon footprint- it will increase it. But as a well paid 'neutral journalist' (or a moron), you love it, don't you. The only way out is to unlock the H2 unlimited capacity. And Yes it's our dear Sun that will power it.

So you pay £10,000-£15,000 extra for a less useful car. Remember these were new, the batteries will deteriorate with more use. Presently, they have lower running cost but the government will have to find a way to compensate for the loss of fuel duty, then? I for one won't be buying one.

Interesting article, but these cars are way too heavy because of the huge hard to recycle batteries required to give them a semi-decent range, and we'll need about a billion of them all from China and that's just cars! There's also the little problem of charging them, its clearly bad enough now even with the few SuperChargers available. I wonder what will happen when everyone has to have an electric car, will it really scale up then? I hope you do an article in the future on claimed charge times compared to actual charge times i.e. The time its takes to stop/wait/charge at a busy service station.

Government will have to use strong discouragement methods to get me off fossils! - To me the very thought of setting out on any longer journey with anxieties over whether using accessories or too many hills will shorten the range is totally unacceptable. Worse, notice that NONE of the vehicles achieved their claimed range. So the ancient device of makers overstating aspects of their cars' performance now extends to their customers risking stranding in the middle of nowhere. IMO this science is at the stage that motoring generally was in the 1920s - we have to learn by experience as we drive - and with the same consequences of failure. Marvellous.
