Funny, in czech language werewolf is vlkodlak, leader of companions is Kodlak. Of course in most of the slavic languages is it also similar, but in czech is it the closest word. It comes from ancient slavic form vъlkodlakъ (wolf skin) Coincidence? I don't think so :D

@SillyGooseTV Perhaps, although an in-universe scholar who has done research into giants believe that giants are a separate evolutionary chain of Atmorans, a brother race to the Nords, not an older race. In addition, there's no evidence that the land giants (as opposed to the sea giants of Elder Scrolls Online) have a system of writing, and oral history is fragile compared to written history.

@King Of Strangeness To summarize - The Ehlnofey were at the bottom of the totem pole of the gods (to the point that names of individual Ehlnofey are no longer known except to Druids or other worshippers of local nature spirits) that created Nirn (the Aedra, or ancestors), and became temporary, having to either merge with the world to survive or live on through their children. The Wandering Ehlnofey are the ancestors of men and giants, called such because they had to *wander* the surface of Nirn before finding Aldmeris, home of the Old Ehlnofey, ancestors of elves and Khajiit (that's another story, but tl;dr Wood Elves are more closely related to Khajiit than they are to the High Elves or any other elven races). The Wandering Ehlnofey thought that they would be welcomed back with open arms by their brethren, as the races had still not split that much at this point. For whatever reason, whether because the Old Ehlnofey blamed Shor, High King of the Wandering Ehlnofey, for them becoming temporary, or because the Wandering Ehlnofey had forgotten many customs and looked disgusting, the Old Ehlnofey rejected them from Aldmeris. This started a war that goes by many names, my favorite of which is the War of Manifest Metaphors. Many of the lands which once existed on Nirn sunk during this war. The elven death god Xarxes was likely adopted as the mannish death god Orkey during this time. The end stages of this war resulted in the betrayal of Shor by the elven gods and the removal of His Heart, along with Kyne gathering the Wandering Ehlnofey to the Throat of the World in order to stabilize their forms. Entering fan speculation - the mannish gods and the elven gods would have both had places of power in this terrible war, with the Skyforge and the Lunar Forge being places of power for the mannish gods. The Snow Elves feared the Skyforge because it was a place of power for enemy gods, specifically Kyne, a terrible wind that had likely destroyed many of their ancestors. I hope that clears it up, at least somewhat. Ask as many questions as you like, if it didn't clear it up. Much of this lore comes from either "The Monomyth" or "The Anuad."

I feel the Hircine connection with the Underforge was too easily dismissed. The moon is also a sign of Hircine, and the ancient Underforge seems too connected with werewolf rituals to be a coincidence. For crying out loud, there are ritual blood-chalices built into the ground! The Khajiit and Reachmen version of the Ehlnofey War highlights the possible connection between Lorkhan, Kynn, and Hircine. The Khajiit myth says Hircine and Kyne allied to defeat a corrupted Y'ffer, while the Reachmen believe Hircine took the mantle of Lorkhan after his fall during the Ehlnofey war. This could mean that Hircine was allied with the Wandering Ehlnofey before Lorkhan's defeat, so therfore Hircine could have contributed his power to the forges.

To my understanding, Nords indeed come from Atmora. They came to Skyrim because the cold in Atmora began to grow worse and worse to the point of where you just couldn't live there anymore so they migrated on ships south to get away from the cold which in turn had them end up in Skyrim where they met the Falmer.

An interesting bit of extra info, the hawk or falcon were in Earth's mythology a symbol of Horus and Heru-ur, god of the skies and wind (most likely Kyne may have been inspired by them). Horus being of the skies was often seen as containing the moon and sun (as both set in the sky at different times). It'd be interesting to find out if the Aedra were based on Earth's mythology and if Horus in particular was the source for Kyne's symbolism of a predatory bird and the skies/winds.

Hey TheEpicNate315 I was playing Skyrim and was thinking about a video you came out with about god like beings ruling the fallout universe ( Dunbar monster). And when I was playing Skyrim I noticed that the Dwemer head statues look really similar to the head statues on the buildings in fallout 4. Also in the cobat quest line the father has a helmet that looks very similar to the Dwemer metal (armor and metal). I had this theory about what if the Dwemer didn’t just disappear to no where but teleported to the fallout universe. And the reason there’s no Dwemer buildings in fallout is because they appeared before humans were around. Because the way the father of the Cabot family found the helmet was by digging it up. And the reason humans are being mind controlled to dig up stuff. I think that when the Dwemer messed with lorkhans heart it not only teleported the Dwemer but also brought lorkhans consciousness with them. And since he’s the god of mortals he possessed them to do his bidding. I’m still looking at the lore about it on both sides ( Skyrim and fallout). Would love to hear your thoughts.

The speculation about Kodlak's spirit being pure and thus powering up the forge is wrong. Kodlak was not free from the curse when he was cremated on the skyforge. Kodlak dies before he's freed from the curse (the Silver Hand raids Whiterun and kills him while you go hunt down the witches), the last quest in the companions storyline is going to the grave of Ysgramor and sacrificing one of the Glenmora witch heads. When arriving at the depths of the tomb you'll find Kodlak's spirit still in Skyrim being protected from Hircine's power waiting for you. When you sacrifice the head a spirit wolf is separated from Kodlak thus freeing him from Hircine and allowing him to pass on to Sovengarde.

What of the underforge whom has unknown origins also, but is currently being used as the companions site for their blood rituals for the "curse of lycanthropy" but, the circle members describe the area of the underforge as an ancient place attuned with the moon and lord hircine. But, that is what they say in the companions. If we take into account the lore of lorkhan (shor) he is split into two moons masser and secunda. Lunar forge and underforge are both attuned to the moon. Whilst the skyforge is attuned to well the sky.? Idk just always found it very interesting.

Beautiful thought and insight for a blind knight my friend. Also, Kyne is a deity closely linked with the wilds and the natural world, whereas Hircine seems to represent the more beastly and bloodthirsty side of nature, and as a Daedra is almost in direct conflict with Kyne/"her version of wildness." It's possible that the Lunar Forge and the Underforge were both originally tuned to the Bodies of Lorkhan and mirrored the Sky of Kyne (One moon further away, the other opposite/beneath the Skyforge)... but were later usurped by Hircine and/or his followers. Perhaps they sought to desecrate such a shrine to Kyne and her spouse, but incapable of destroying such a relic as the Skyforge they could only pervert the Underforge. Indeed, as the lycanthropy was introduced to the Companions by the witches who were direct followers of Hircine, it's possible that was done on purpose to corrupt the shrine of their rival deity. What better way than to trick the Companions into being forced to follow/adapt to Hircine's vision of the Wilds, right beneath the shadow of the great bird itself. Pleasure to meet and speak with you friend. Be safe and well

*Thanks for the shout out* The referenced comment: The Skyforge was created during the Dawn War by Hircine and Kyne (The Hawk) to equip Lorkhan and the Wandering Ehlnofey against Auri-El and the Old Ehlnofey. After the death of Lorkhan, there was a schism between the Wandering Ehlnofey with the proto-Nedes going to the Reach with Hircine and the proto-Nords going to Atmora with Kyne. The Skyforge remains behind as a relic of a forgotten alliance. Evidence of the Hircine/Kyne alliance: *The Skyforge of the Hawk (Kyne) and the Underforge of Hircine share an ancient site that the descendents of Old Ehlnofey feared into the Merethic era. *In Khajii tales, Hircine allies himself with Khenarthi (alongside Azurah) to slay the elven god Y'ffer. *Both the Nords and Reachmen consider themselves followers of Shor/Lorkh -- even if they don't acknowledge one another. *Kyne's chosen son is Morihaus, a man-beast. This would be strange as minotaurs have been shown to be followers of Hircine. Maybe Minotaurs have an ancient connection between both Kyne and Hircine?
Vor 2 Monate
Jagne Stormskull
@Bad Luck "Instead of Morihaus being the literal "son of Kyne", the goddess could be the Man-Bull's matriarch or creator." I'm aware. Morihaus Breath-of-Kyne's name can also be taken literally, as in, Kyne breathed on a bull and turned it into a demigod. "Some say Morihaus is the ancestor of all minotaurs, while others only attribute their spread to the rule of Morihaus' son." Interesting. I have a feeling that the latter is Marukhati/Alessian Order propaganda. Those religious groups were very mannish supremacist, and wanted to erase the histories about Saint Alessia's true son being a minotaur. If I'm talking out my ass here, I'd be glad to get some links. I've also heard fan speculation that, since Morihaus is a demigod, he probably outlasted Saint Alessia and had children after her death. Alessia and Morihaus's son(s) could have had dozens or even hundreds of half-siblings because of Morihaus's demigod status, although Alessia's son would be unique because he is the only one that might be Dragonborn. That's just speculation though.

@Jagne Stormskull There are conflicting sources about the origins of minotaurs. Some say Morihaus is the ancestor of all minotaurs, while others only attribute their spread to the rule of Morihaus' son. Titles like "son" and "father" between individuals and gods may not be literal. Instead of Morihaus being the literal "son of Kyne", the goddess could be the Man-Bull's matriarch or creator.

@Richard Proper The Bosmer and Khajiit have a rivalry not dissimilar from the Altmer and Nords. This is mirrored in the Khajiit myths that show the Bosmer patron god in a negative light. The Khajiit version of events: Hircine was in love with Nirni, but she fell in love with Y'ffre instead. A jealous Hircine kills Y'ffre's champion, the Graht-Elk, and took to wearing its head as a trophy. Y'ffre eventually became corrupted by Namiira, and then Y'ffre struck and killed Nirni in a frenzy. Hircine, along with Azura and Khenarthi, slew Y'ffre and made a cairn out of his bones for their fallen sister. Y'ffre is the leaders of the Ehlnofey that became the Earthbones- rules of nature that gave the world stability. The only equivalent in the pantheons of men are Bretons' Jephre.

@Mega Lorandto Gaming Yeah, every game, including the side games, except for ESO, Skyrim, and Legends, takes place in the Third Era. Usually the end of the Third Era, the reign of the [depending on how you count] penultimate or last Emperor of the Septim Dynasty, Uriel Septim VII. A lot of crap went down in his lifetime. Oh, wait, scratch that, "Adventures: Redguard" takes place at the tail end of the Second Era, when Tamriel has almost been united by Talos.

So it's true that Lorkhan is associated with the moons, but one should keep in mind that The Lunar Lorkhan was written by Fal Droon, whose name is an anagram of 'Darn Fool'. He also wrote The Dragon Break Reexamined, a book claiming that timeline shenanigans aren't possible despite being from the future; so we gotta take Lorkhan being the moons with a grain of salt. That said, there IS a moon that we KNOW is related to Lorkhan, because we go there in ESO; the Dark Heart. So either Lorkhan's corpse is that dark moon, or his corpse is all three moons somehow, but we only know one of them is truly associated with him for certain.

As funny as it may sound, the story of the Ehlnofey and how it forms Nirn sort of reminds me of the fan theory that the world of Fallout later became the world of the Elder Scrolls... And this may sound silly, but with a group of people being referred to as "Mer" just reminds me of how "American" is some times shortened to " 'Merican"... I mean don't get me wrong, I understand that there being different celestial bodies around the two worlds should be an obvious sign that they are not linked in that way, but I could see how some might think/hope that they are. (Oh, also if you see the Hawk of the Skyforge as an Eagle, it sort of gives you an idea of what part of the world Tamriel is/was.)

The player is Lor Khan, aka Shor. You can't sit on anyone's throne in the game but Sovngarde, Shor's one. Also, the same story is depicted with different ending in "Aedra and Daedra"
Vor Monat

The last dragonborn is not Lorkhan (or Shor in the nordic pantheon). He is called Ysmir, the "Dragon of the North" (nordic aspect of Talos) by the Greybeards. But since he has both Shor's and Kyne's blessings (there are some hints on several dialogues), I guess it can explain why he can sits on Shor's throne.

I believe that The Skyforge and the Selkie Statue are some of the last few remnants of the Wandering Elnofey's early religion. I believe the animals/cryptids depicted by the statues are the earliest totemic depictions of the Aedra, in specific, I think the Skyforge depicts a representation of Kyne while the Selkie is of Dibella. If this theory is correct, when the Wandering Elnofey became Men and moved to Atmora they would have brought the tradition of representing the gods as animal totems with them, which would them be brought back to Tamriel with several of the early Nede groups.

@Jagne Stormskull I'll read up on the ghost moon a bit more. But from what I remember I thought it represented the darkness that was in Lorkhaj. Thank you for the references. I mainly mean massar and suncunda. Which I admittedly assume everyone is speaking about. This idea about his body becoming Sovngarde is very intriguing honestly. And for calcification, I agree that Magnus would have issue with shor. But that they didn't have conflict. He just noped out of there the minute he realized what he was making.
Vor 2 Monate
Jagne Stormskull
@M "shor isn't the moon. He didn't have a conflict with magnus. Magnus was the observer to the enantiomorph" Is that entirely true? Magnus is a god mostly worshipped by elves, Bretons, and Khajiit, so the likelihood of Magnus being neutral in the Dawn Wars is low. It also depends on which moon you're talking about; the Ghost Moon that the Khajiit call the Den of Lorkhaj is very real according to ESO, so... Now, of course, the Den of Lorkhaj could be the body of the darkness inside of Shor, not the true Shor (see Amun-Dro's writings on the Moon Prince vs. the Moon Beast). Shor's body could have been integrated into Nirn like the Heart, or it could have flown into Aetherius, ripping a hole in the Void like the Magna-Ge did, then becoming Sovngarde itself. This is all just speculation, of course.

I believe that the Skyforge steels best real world analogy are probably crucible steel. You cannot produce that in a standard furnace. What the game get wrong for that is the fact that you can easily smith crucible steel in a standard forge but to produce the ingots, THAT is a problem. If I would mod in this explanation into the game then you can smith skyforge steel anywhere but you need to acces to a special forge to be able to reach the level of heat to produce the ingots. Thease forges, in Skyrim, would be The Skyforge, The Eternium Forge and the forge under the magic college. Perhaps I would also allow the forge in Riften after it has been fed but the smith there have no interest in working in Skyforge steel so the PC would still have to smith anything him/herself. To produce crucible steel, in game terms, you need Iron or steel ingots, clay and crushed glass and ceramics. Make a crucible of the clay and fill it with layers of metal, and the crushed glass and ceramics, close up the crusible and then essentially bake the whole thing in the forge under high heat for many hours/a few days. The metal will melt inside and the class and ceramics draws out impurities creating a high quality metal. I have seen a video of the process here on YouTube so I am not too far off from the reality here.

@Ieago The question is, is it a proper ice age in a glaciation cycle, or just the end of a little warm bump. Like the holocene climatic optimum that ended around 500 years ago. Or considering he time scale of the lore even something like the younger dryas.

This completely makes sense, especially everything about Whiterun screaming Kyne being their patron goddess. I mean, yes, there is a Shrine to Talos and a crazy priest screaming at the top of his lungs the love that Talos gives to all mankind...but that is the exception in Whiterun, the heart of Skyrim. From the Temple of Kynareth, to the names of the city's districts, to the fact that even Balgruuf himself references Kynareth in a protective prayer to the Dragonborn as he/she takes off on Odahviing's back to Skuldafn...everything in Whiterun is for Kyne/Kynareth. So it even makes sense that the Skyforge was hers, as well. Also, I love the fact that Whiterun and Dragonsreach was based on Edoras from Lord of the Rings. Whiterun Hold feels so very much like Rohan. And the Horselords of the Riddermark would be proud to see that Whiterun's symbol is of their beloved equine friends. Also, in old Pagan societies, the color yellow, which is the color of Whiterun guard uniforms and their shields, was the color of air in elemental magic. Simple perfection. Everything fits together so succinctly.

And, many times have I spent a minute or two looking at it and shaking my head wondering. But, I never spent any time digging into it! Thanks Epic Nate for illuminating that bit of history/lore.

Same here. I've never played any of the previous elder scrolls games, so a lot of the lore is lost on me. By reading the books in skyrim (and skyrim only) Ive pieced together, and understand the basics, like the different territories, races, and some events, both current and historical. But the companion's mead hall is one (of many I'm sure) that I was completely unaware of. And it was hiding in plain sight too, lol.

I always hated how I was forced to turn in to a werewolf, it not only messes with my character's head-cannon, it also effects my playstyle.

Vor 2 MonateTheHuffur
@Bad Luck It just so happens that the Companions were making a food cellar at the same time, or any other random reason or way to get rid of a bunch of stone and yes perhaps it was because the smith was making swords. Their new secret technique did not work out as expected and instead of the best quality steel it turned to slag/stone instead! :)
Vor 2 MonateBad Luck
@TheHuffur It's not just noise. It is the loadd of construction equipment and the tons of rubble that has to be removed from the landmark. Unless you believe that people are just going believe that cartload after carload of removed rock is attributed to the Skyforge's one smith making swords?

@Bad Luck But why would they preserve the epic story of "Skyforge working overtime yet again, trouble sleeping, part XII" ? Loud sounds from the forge, even at night, would likely not be a strange or uncommon thing worth notice aside from people grumbling about their sleep being disturbed.

Vor 2 MonateJagne Stormskull
Vor MonatBad Luck

@Jagne Stormskull also, I was a bit pissy when I made that original comment. I appreciate the good references, polite comeback and interesting ideas you presented.
Vor 2 MonateM
@Jagne Stormskull I'll read up on the ghost moon a bit more. But from what I remember I thought it represented the darkness that was in Lorkhaj. Thank you for the references. I mainly mean massar and suncunda. Which I admittedly assume everyone is speaking about. This idea about his body becoming Sovngarde is very intriguing honestly. And for calcification, I agree that Magnus would have issue with shor. But that they didn't have conflict. He just noped out of there the minute he realized what he was making.
Vor 2 MonateJagne Stormskull

Vor 17 TageMichael Pettersson

Honestly I think that’s just Bethesda being Bethesda and not paying attention to their own work. It’s clear the lunar forge was abandoned by the devs really early, so the right hand might not have been talking to the left hand. Same with the fire/absorb discrepancy.

Also worth noting, in addition to just having a hawk as her "Symbol", the Khajiiti interpretation of Kyne, Khynarthi's form is actually that of a great bird, the Island of Khynarthi's Roost being named for being the one place she rested, in the boughs of the great tree on the island, in her first flight around the world.

Never mind the ability to "power up" by being used as a pyre for great heros, and the connection to Kynareth, I also believe Akatosh (Auriel and patron to the Snow Elves) was the main perpetrator in the shattering of Lorkhan (Shor, Kynareths husband to the Nords).

9:00 It's pretty clear to me that Atmora suffered glaciation. The Companions' induction references the "days of the distant green summers," and "Atmora" itself translates to "elder wood."
Vor 2 MonateHappyBeezerStudios - by Lord_Mogul
@Ieago The question is, is it a proper ice age in a glaciation cycle, or just the end of a little warm bump. Like the holocene climatic optimum that ended around 500 years ago. Like the end of the medieval warm period (when norsemen settled greenland, which is now pretty much frozen) followed by the little ice age. Or considering he time scale of the lore even something like the younger dryas.
Vor 2 MonateIeago
@Brian Roberts And I'm pretty sure the ice age is advancing. The glaciers in on the north side of the Yorgrim mountains are rolling *over* the ruins there. Saarthal and Alftand would have to have been built prior to the ice formations for that to happen!
Vor 2 MonateBrian Roberts
It's also mentioned in several in game sources that Atmora is frozen, and there are references to the Nords leaving because of advancing ice.
