For me, the most poignant moment was at 54:11 when the soldiers and the parade officer removed their helmets as a mark of respect to their Chancellor. She looked almost moved to tears.

I'm not often publicly proud of my country, it's just not my thing. But seeing this woman go, with her dedication and intelligence; combined with her humbleness, brings tears in my eyes. I'll miss her small jokes she used to drop with a smile, like when she was asked, what she's going to do now. She answered: "I'll sleep late and then I'll have a look [for what i want to do]"

As far as I've been told it has in fact been used in ceremonies on german soil but only on a few occasions and nothing too high profile, of course. I also don't think it will ever be reintroduced fully but it could become a thing to keep the tradition alive on certain occasions. I certainly wouldn't mind.

The Bundeswehr is not reintroducing any of the variants though, the Paradeschritt is only in extremely limited use for festive appearances overseas, but will likely never be reintroduced to events on German soil.

The "extreme" form of having the feet go up to the hip, however, is not the original form (where the feet go up to the knees at maximum) but was invented by the Soviets (and later adopted by the Chinese) and is called "Exerzierschritt" ("drilling step"). Last I've heard is that the Bundeswehr is very slowly starting to reintroduce the Stechschritt.
