As a Moorish American.. I have read many books and talked to many people on the downfall of the Ottoman Empire one of the main problems was that the Arabs thought they was being marginalized so they stood against the Ottomans thinking that it was going to liberate them but it did nothing but weakened them foolish Behavior

I don’t think the movie depicted Lawrence as a hero but rather showed the downfall of a man who had beliefs of grandiosity. His character eroded over time. Also, it’s worth looking into why some of the tribes of Arabia who had Lawrence live amongst them revered him so much as to name their sons “Awrance”? Until today it remains the only western name for man that is socially acceptable. I’m not saying that the movie had problematic elements and I have no doubt that Lawrence was serving the English imperial power but I wonder if the man’s allegiance remained consistent throughout his career.

The movie does not portray Lawrence as a hero. He fails at the end and it is clearly shown. It's a movie about a conflicted individual who got lost while searching for his own identity. The historical background makes the story more interesting, but it could be a story about anyone, and it resonates with many.

There is no denying that Lawrence led the attack on what was considered to be an impregnable Akaba and he successfully captured it which was quite an accomplishment by itself. Also he conducted a guerrilla war against the Turks and blew up many of their rail lines in Arabia. All this was accurately portrayed in the 1962 movie. He had no part in the tricky Allied diplomacy pursued during and after WWI.

Don't take this video as a history lesson - it's about as misleading and biased as the movie it criticizes! The real Lawrence was disgusted with the actions of the British in the Middle East and deeply ashamed of his role in the war. He actively fought against his own government to try to win a better deal for the Arabs: publishing letters in newspapers denouncing the British and French, refusing a knighthood in the presence of the King, and throwing his medals into a river in protest. History is more complicated than simple heroes and villains. Seek out the facts for yourself.
Vor 2 years
harrysecombegroupie
Baby Sama 712 Lawrence was far from beyond criticism, but he was certainly not evil. And he certainly never considered himself a hero. He wanted independent states for the Arabs, not British and French control, as this video claims. He predicted the unrest and bloodshed that would happen if the British and French carved up the Middle East for themselves, and actively tried to prevent this. I'm neither British nor French, so I have no reason for bias. But I have read many books about him (both in praise and highly critical of his actions) as well as literally hundreds of letters and reports written by Lawrence and have a much clearer idea of his character and motives than the creator of this video.

The narrative of the arabs being primitive is completely consistent with how the victorian British viewed every aboriginal people on the planet, so in that sense the story is pretty accurate and it’s not gard to see why the Arabs would take offence. There were internal rivalries amongst the Arabs going back centuries, that had to be overcome to unite them to beat the turks. Also, the British high command used Lawrence to manipulate the arab revolt to for its own ends, i.e. to get the region’s resources (oil) for Britain deprive the Ottoman empire and the Arab leaders used him to improve their bargaining position when it became time to negotiate their independence. So while the Arabs don’t like how they are portrayed and the chronology is played with, from a big picture standpoint it does present the English perspective overall. It shows that this whole theatre was about manipulation, who was playing whom, and how it is never quite clear - Alanby is himself shocked at the end when he finds out that Faisal has been playing him. And it also demonstrates what a flawed individual Lawrence was. So I think from a big picture standpoint the story being told captures a certain truth about those events.

Mmmm, when I watched the movie as a teen, I saw a fanatical flawed hero stumbling his way among the Arabs, who had their revolt and used him and much as he sought to 'help' them. In his turn being played by an arrogant British empire mentality that loved double-crossing. So, it's either not as bad as portrayed by the angry guy making this item, or I love underdogs. And then I see this is a Turkish broadcast. Ah, it seems they have forgotten how tired everyone was of the Ottoman Empire. I hope they don't want it back, because, as all Empires go, from the earliest to the current American Empire, Empires always kill people who don't like it. I think I better not mention the Armenians here, because of a collective historic rewriting.

Just put a link to his diaries in the description. Ive read them and liberate who?? He talks about the arab morals at time on how they dont lie and the holliness of women over there where when tribes attack and steal from each other they would never touch a woman even when they would come out and hit, spit or scream at them cuz they knew they would be safe. He spoke about when a man trief to steal something from a woman the cut of his hand and anger as though he brough humiliation to their tribe from that action. Also he would let his wife site around with bedwins(so called backward) because he knew no one would touch women over there since they travel many miles alone and asked a bedwin woman when she traveled with a man alone for while and returned were you not afraid, she could not understand so he said it bluntly as tho she coudlve been harrassed or raped, she just told him watch your mouth this happens in your country. Sadly there morals have been diminished immensley that place has been culturaly polluted by secular liberators.

@harrysecombegroupie True that. Even as a Muslim, I can see how the creator of the video doesn't get the point of the whole movie. I even wondered if they have watched the movie themselves. Lawrence was not a hero nor he was intended to be depicted as one. It's true that it has some inaccuracies here and there, but the point of the movie is about the humanity of Lawrence and how he descended from somewhat a decent guy into a person who did horrible actions. And we can actually see the cracks of his conflicted psyche when he made those decisions.

At the same time that the Turks were commiting genocide against the Armenians and Assyrians they were starving the Arabs of greater Syria into submission. Syrian civilians suffered a huge rate of mortality through a deliberate policy of starvation and deprivation during the Arab Revolt years. There are valid criticisms in this video, especially of the movie version of history, but there are some distortions here, too. For instance, the "regular" soldiers of the Revolt who served under English, French or Arab officers wore uniforms, but there were also many bands of tribal cavalry like Auda Abu Tayi's Sharif Nasr's and Nuri Shaalan's riders, the Rualla cavalry and Druze cavalry none of whom wore uniforms. A significant distortion is the implication that Lawrence approved of the Anglo-French "betrayal by partition" of the Arabs. He hated that, and he made his feelings clear. In the end he washed his hands of all of it in a dishonorable way, but the many losses, traumas and horrors he'd suffered and the guilt of his participation in the betrayal haunted him and crippled his psyche.

The Prophet ﷺ also prophesied that carnal pursuits would not only infect his nation but would be the cause of their downfall and devastation. Thawbān (rA) reports that the Prophet ﷺ said, “The nations will soon invite one another to devour you, just as diners are invited to a dish.” It was said, “Will it be because of our small number on that day?” He said, “No, rather you will be many on that day, but you will be [weightless] foam, like the foam on the river. And Allah will remove the fear of you from the hearts of your enemies, and will cast weakness into your hearts.” Someone said, “O Messenger of Allah, what will this weakness be?” He said, “The love of this world, and the hatred of death.”[58] Reinforcing this point, Anas (rA) narrates that the Prophet ﷺ said, “Once my nation considers five things permissible, then destruction will befall them: when cursing one another appears, wine is drunk, silk is worn [by men], musical instruments are played, and men suffice themselves with men and women suffice themselves with women.”[59] Certainly, Muslims today are not insulated from the ideologies demanding the acceptance of same-sex acts in the world around them. This is even imaginable for a practicing, mosque-goer Muslim, if they allow their religiosity to be reduced to a cultural identity, as the Prophet ﷺ said in a hadith narrated by ‘Abdullah b. ‘Amr (rA), “An age will surely come when people gather and pray in the mosques, while there is not a single believer amongst them.”

This video makes valid points about problematic orientalism and historical inaccuracies in the film, as well as the actions of the British during WWI, but it also grossly misinterprets the movie and the real Lawrence's actions, motivations, and character. The film itself is anti-British, anti-imperialist, and anti-White Saviour. The British are shown openly scheming to deceive the Arabs and carve up the middle east in their own interests. British officers a shown as racist, and far from depicting him as a hero, Lawrence is shown as naïve and arrogant. The film deliberately subverts the White Saviour trope. The real Lawrence believed in Arab independence, not British and French rule, as this video claims. He was disgusted by the duplicity and broken promises of the British government and actively worked against the British after the war to try to win a better deal for the Arabs: negotiating on their behalf at Peace Conferences, publishing letters denouncing the British and French, and refusing a knighthood in the presence of the King in protest. He regretted his involvement in the Arab Revolt and admitted that trying to influence another people and country was naive and arrogant and that he'd had no right to do so. Far from depicting himself as a Rambo figure in The Seven Pillars of Wisdom, Lawrence is very honest about his own flaws and failures. He downplays the roles of other British and French officers in order to emphasise the importance of the Arab Revolt, not to glorify himself. He gave credit to Arab leaders where it was due. The Turks are depicted unfavourably because Lawrence witnessed Turkish atrocities at close hand: particularly a brutal massacre of women and children. He also admits to committing atrocities himself. Lawrence made unflattering statements about the Arabs, but also praised them elsewhere. He made equally scathing comments about the British and French. Lawrence co-operated with Lowell Thomas as he thought the publicity would help the Arab cause. He later regretted this and thought Thomas was a fool. At least some of the Bedouin Lawrence worked with respected him enough to name their sons and grandsons Lawrence. The kind of misinformation, bias, and distortion of history that this video presents is highly counterproductive, regardless of your race, nationality or religion: it only serves to fuel prejudice, ignorance, and hatred.

@Tristan There is a scene in the movie where a British politician straight up explains the plan to betray the Arabs and carve up the middle east for the British and French. If anything the film is anti-, rather than pro-British. It's actually about the foolishness and arrogance of the White Saviour trying to direct the course of another people and country he has no business interfering with. The creator of this video really seems to have missed that point.

Highly false depiction of Lawrence in this 7min. We know it was a movie, although not Hollywood style, and there was a lot of inaccuracies in it . Lawrence was a hero in any meaning of the word, although we do understand the Arabs may have a different opinion. Having spent time in Jordan and talking to many locals up and down the country some think of him highly and others don't. Lawrence was a very complex man, best to read books about him to get a basis of who he was.

Vor 2 yearsharrysecombegroupie

I love history and historical accuracy but I feel like people miss the point of a “performance” in movies. Lawrence of Arabia was never intended to be a biography of Lawrence.

In fairness, the movie does show that the British betrayed the Arabs when the war ended.

isn't the movie directed by non Arabs ? I thought they won't admit the betrayal

Roid Astria He was a hero to the western powers. They were fighting a war with the Turks, not really anything to do with religion. Certainly not trying to convert anyone. Not sure where you are getting your info from. And heaven knows that last thing you want is human rights in a country....

We as Muslims can’t blame others for our short comings. We let them do whatever was done and is being done us. They are united against us and we are severely fragmented. There is no god but Allah and Muhammad is the last messenger of Allah. Whatever comes after this is not trivial.
