Really happy that RRR won best song. There are so many Indian movies that have such great music, and the fact that they are finally getting recognized is amazing. The Academy rubbed me the wrong way when they didn't let India nominate Sardhar Udham, the movie about freedom fighters and Indian revolution (they said it glorified terrorism, which is just so stupid), but it looks like they are changing for the better!

The last indian submission nominated for best foreign film, was an anti colonial masala film about cricket. RRR is also an anti colonial masala film. I think they didn't nominate sardar udham was because it wasn't made to be entertaining like lagaan and rrr and provided a way more harsh and realistic portrayal of colonialism.

@CyberHumanism It was (this may be slightly wrong as it has been a while since I saw the film) about when a British man ordered the genocide of millions of Indians in a small village and an Indian man killing him as revenge for wiping out his village and family. The Indian Man is treated horribly in prison and his story is told to a biographer or something of that sort. It is an amazing movie, and shows the darker side of the revolution as opposed to ht lighthearted tone of RRR.

I think my favorite moment of this show was the intro to the In Memoriam section. It was really obvious that John Travolta was upset because of Olivia Newton-John's death, and his speech made me tear up a bit. And the actual section was really good, a HUGE improvement over last year's. Oh, additionally, when the woman who won Best Costuming color-coordinated her speech cards to match her dress. That is some queen behavior.

That was what I noticed, that Travolta's speech seemed so honest and close to him. It was really quite moving

I was about to comment that! Even though puss in boots 2 was my favorite, I’m glad that Del Toros Pinocchio was picked to rub it in the face of those smug big wigs who think animation is only for kids.

I thought All Quiet on the Western Front's strongest asset was its score. It wasn't triumphant, or loud, or really all that noticeable, I recommend anyone to rewatch that movie, but when it kicks in let the music take you through your feelings. It't used infrequently but, I thought that the scarcity of the haunting tones were what made it special, always I got chills hearing it. (this was kind of like certain parts of puss and boots, no spoilers, if you know you know) Additionally the first scene was so interesting and made great use of that disturbing score. At the very least I think it deserved to have won based on how unique it was to me.

Exactly, I have to disagree with Schaffrillas here, I thought the score was straight up depressing and more importantly haunting. I thought the movie accomplished exactly what it set out to do and I was not bored at any point either. Incredibly disturbing and depressing film, definitely recommend it as a watch. I think its more mature than most other war movies, not because of its violence or anything, but because of its position on war.

Just want to say the boy the mole the fox and the horse was so incredibly deserving of best animated short. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT TO EVERYONE. When I was going through a really rough patch I watched that film and I cried. Not only is every frame a beautiful masterpiece, and does so much justice to the book, but it also contains such a powerful message about kindness and compassion for one’s self that brings anyone to tears. I bought the hardcover version of the book for my 20th birthday and the artistry is simply phenomenal

Can 100% vouch. I got to watch it with my mum in the cinemas as it was showing with all the other oscar animated short nominees, and we absolutely loved it. My Mum just quite literally said, “I feel like I just got years worth of therapy in one short movie” and I couldn’t’ve agreed more. I was so happy to hear that it won.

All Quiet totally deserved the wins in my opinion. Wayyyy better than 1917 lol. It was one of the most anti-war war films I've seen period, and easily the most beautiful.

Ke Huy Quan gave another speech to the press backstage after the ceremony and said that ALL of his (main) Goonies co-stars reached out to him in congratulations, it was wholesome as fuck! This is what he said: "You know, before this night started um..Corey Feldman, one of my Goonies brothers called. I was talking to Kerri Green. And of course, tonight, Jeff Cohen - who is my entertainment lawyer - was with me in the audience, which is why I thanked him. Because, I love all of them so much! I just really appreciated how this year, the animation category didn't start with the presenters treating animation as "kiddy stuff". Not only did Guillermo give his "animation is a medium" speech, but Dwayne Johnson explained that animation is pretty much tied to film history. That was a good surprise, and hopefully, this continues every year, along with more animated films being nominated in the other categories.

I agree with Shaff on a lot of things, but I honestly think that him saying All Quiet was an "average war movie" is such a (metaphorical) bullet to the chest. All Quiet was honestly such a great movie and leveling it to an average war movie hurts. And while the score (besides Remains) wasn't as memorable as some other nominations, I absolutely think that the cinematography was amazing. There were several points in this movie where I just marveled at the camera work and the shot comps. Plus, that introduction scene with the soldier dying and his clothes being recycled perfectly set the tone and was already making me prepare for the incoming doom that was about to happen. The lead actor also did a phenomenal job, the crater scene really stands out- everytime he cries, it feels like genuine tears. They're gross, uncontrolled not pretty to hear- it was almost gut-punching. I could go on but the point is, I respect anyone's point on this movie, it is surely not for everyone. But to anybody calling it an average war movie, it really is so much more than it may seem and the team behind it are talented at their craft. I also highly recommend the BTS for the movie on Netflix, it's great.

The 1930 All Quiet is my favourite movie ever, but when I heard there was a new one being made by *Netflix* of all people? Let's just say I wasn't optimistic. But that crater scene? My God. I haven't felt that level of emotion since the 1930 movie. All Quiet is truly great in all adaptations and I'm glad it stayed that way with this one.

Quan was definitely the main highlight in Oscars. Surprisingly I didn't expected his speech to be more inspiring than any previous Oscar winners so congratulations to him.

I think All Quiet on the Western Front deserved its wins. It’s not some, “standard war movie,” the battle scenes are literally horrifying and gruesome. The score also sells every moment making it feel real. Plus Germany usually doesn’t win anything at the Oscars so it was nice.

This is really what the Oscar’s should be: recognition. Recognition for the hard work so many people put into each area of putting together a piece of art. No forced comedy or cutting for time. Just time for saying “hey look at what these cool people have done! Isn’t that cool?!”

I think eventually we will get that as this years Oscar has taken significant steps towards that idealistic recognition of the craft.

I'm crying tears of happiness. I didn't even fucking realize that Ke Huy Quan was the child actor from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom... I've seen this movie so many times, that's what unites me and my father. I always felt like this kid drinking alcohol and driving had a hard time. I glad he finally won an Oscar. I won't watch his acceptance speech yet because I'll probably die of excessive crying.

The score for All Quiet on The Western front added to the feeling of dread and hopelessness. What made the movie unique is that everyone dies, there are no heroes in WW1 and this film was unique in its lense as a truly anti-war movie.

I hope they do the thing where they showed off each category every year. Like showing all the costumes from the costuming category on stage or the history lesson on cinematography. I really liked that cuz I felt it not only helped us as audience members understand those aspects of film better but it also showed a lot of respect for those respective noms

How could anyone say all quiet on the western front was a boring movie ??? I honestly believe it was unreal and deserved best picture. Seeing the true realities of war and the mental development of the main character from the beginning to end of the movie was unreal.

I love when people say that about All Quiet. Because, while true, people treat it like it's a new concept. Like the two adaptations before it and the novel just never existed. Which I guess just shows how good it is. You forget it, then, just like war, you get thrown right back into it without warning.

I’d recommend checking out the novel of all quiet on the western front. It’s really impactful and a very important novel. The history of the author behind it is also super interesting.

My parents have always been longtime watchers of the Oscars, so I have done my very best to educate them on the importance of animation and how much work really goes into them. It made me feel good to see how happy they were during Guillermo’s speech, as he said, “Animation is Cinema. Animation is not a genre.”

I feel you. My parents are also huge cinema nerds, mom is more passionate about scores and music while dad on actors and cinematography. I grew up loving animation the most, and i've been getting really discouraged in recent years seeing animation so bullied and diminished by movie industry and public alike... hope this year reignited some sparks, thanks to del toro and especially Puss in Boots

The Banshees of Inisherin not winning at least something is honestly really sad to me. I really enjoyed that movie, but oh well. The Oscars being actually good this year (and animation getting at least an ounce of respect) is good enough news for me.

The thing that hit me most was when John Travolta got emotional when talking about all the actors and actresses that we had lost this year, paying homage to Olivia Newton-John. My school decided to do grease for this year’s production, and I got Danny Zuko and a great friend of mine got Sandy. It just hurts so much to think how Olivia is actually gone, and seeing Travolta say “We are forever Hopelessly devoted to you” almost brought me to tears. It made me feel ever more indebted to the character of Danny Zuko and the show of Grease, it made me feel even more devoted to that friend who took the roll with me, to my Sandy Counterpart. And it showed me the strength and beauty that art, be it film, musical, book or animation, can impose on people. RIP Olivia Newton-John We will forever be hopelessly devoted to you.

Love schaff, but it’s clear he is entirely not the audience and maybe not that well versed on why war movies are what they are, what importance they serve, and most importantly, why they’re necessary enough to continue being made. That and this was Germany’s first big attempt at adapting it and they knocked it out of the park in my opinion. The metaphor that “war kills all soldiers” was visually displayed perfectly, especially by the ending.

The fact that Del Toro's Pinocchio was the first non-CGI animated feature to win that category since Curse of the Ware Rabbit is astounding to me considering the latter came out the day I was born. I *grew up* in the time it took for a stop-motion feature to get a win again.

I watched it when I was a little kid and loved every single scene of that movie, though my all-time favorite was Chicken Run. Pinocchio's victory brought justice to the amazing world of stop motion animation.

I feel like they gave the Oscar to Jamie Lee Curtis instead of Stephanie Hsu because she's getting old and they wanted her to have an award. I genuinely can't justify another reason. She did an absolutely fantastic job, don't get me wrong, but Stephanie Hsu was probably the best part of the movie. Every time she was on screen she just had such a demanding presence and left a lasting impact with her performance.

Ignoring all the other comments I agree with you, this honestly reminds me of Sonic the Hedgehog these days, the company now knows what the fans want and because of that we've had 3 years of good Sonic content. I will say that I did wish that there were more Indian dancers during the Natu Natu performance. But other than that, it was a well put together ceremony. Not to mention that I'm happy for the wins for Original Song and Short documentary, considering that those were the two first wins for the country of India 💛

A lot of people seem to agree that Jaime Lee Curtis received the Oscar in recognition for her career as a whole (rather than for her specific role in EEAAO). While I'm very happy for Jaime, I do hope that Angela Bassett gets her flowers. 💐 (Also, I've loved Stephanie Hsu since she was Karen the Computer and Christina Canigula, and I can't wait to see what she does next!)

Another thing they got right was bringing best editing back to the main show. Relegating what is arguably the most important aspect of filmmaking to the non-televised portion was absolutely insane.

This was my favorite oscars ever. EEAAO was my favorite movie of 2022 so it was like watching my team win the superbowl but even more because I identified with the film so much as a Taiwanese-American. Truly one of the awards shows of all time

Maybe I’m just biased about all quiet because I’m German but I think this movie deserved all the Oscar’s it got. I only watched few movies that got me so emotional and disgusted about the topic war. And from my perspective I can definitely say that it’s not only great that this movie has won because it’s a genuinely good movie but after Germany got nominated in so many categories it truly brought hope to the German film industry. I think because all quiet won there are gonna be a lot more international movies in the future and don’t get me startet about the effect this movie has in the present time. The Oscar’s have always been political in a way and so I think it was the right move to first of all nominate an anti war movie in so many categories to maybe get more people to watch it and acknowledge it.

Before watching this year's Oscars, I was able to watch The Whale, like, literally the afternoon before the broadcast. And honestly? It's surprising it wasn't nominated for more than just 3 awards (Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Makeup). It was so emotionally raw and moving that I was straight up sobbing as credits rolled. If you all end up watching it, be prepared for some emotional suckerpunches, but also for probably one of the best films of the last few years, at least in my subjective opinion. I hope you're able to give it a view in the near future. TL;DR - watch The Whale, you cowards.

I’m glad you liked the film but I gotta admit I’ve watched almost every film nominated this year and the whale was my least favourite. Especially Sadie Sinks character. She felt like a stereotypical “I’m a bad girl because my parents hate me” kinda person. It was kinda cringe. Brendan Fraser was great though.

I’m so happy that Ke Huy Quan and Brendan Fraser made massive comebacks, Everything Everywhere All at Once got awards that were well-deserved, Harrison Ford and Ke Huy Quan had a little Indiana Jones reunion, Jimmy Kimmel wasn’t totally awful compared to his other times hosting, and overall, this Academy Awards was actually mostly enjoyable.

I'm probably biased since I'm argentinian, but I really, really wanted Argentina 1985 to win; Not only for the gag of winning the third one (Ganamos la tercera), but also because it is simply, in my opinion, a great movie. It taught me about my country's history with the storys of the witnesses, that were truly heartbreaking, and that final speech that Darín's character does, that "Nunca Más" really brought me to tears. To put it simply, it made me quite emotional. Despite my bitter thoughts, however, it was a well deserved win for All Quiet in the Western Front. All in all, like you said, a surprisingly good Oscar's. And to anyone who is interested in documental-like movies, that talk about a dark period in a country's history, I hugely recommend Argentina 1985.

All Quiet on the Western Front was amazing. I've rarely felt such dread and hopelesness from watching a movie before. There was no heroic sacrifice or the hero saving the day. It just showed how pointless war is and that soldiers are victims of it too. It really felt like a true anti-war movie.

Yeah. I really feel like James just didn’t get the movie at all and was expecting it to be something different going on. Especially seeing how he ranked 1917 over it. 1917 is great, don’t get me wrong, but definitely a way more generic and typical “war hero saves the day” movie than All Quiet was.

I have never bothered to watch the Oscars before, but I wasn't asleep yet when it was about to start (which was at midnight where I am), so I watched the first 20 minutes. They addressed the elephant in the room (KEEP MY WIFES NA... you know the rest) early on, started off with animation, didn't treat animation like it is just for kids or a lesser art form then the winners have a short + genuine speech. Surprisingly, I was satisfied.

One of my film school teachers gave us those play-along ballots and I decided to fill it out. I got twelve of the categories right, and nearly got a thirteenth because I figured EEAAO would win in Costumes instead of Black Panther and switched the latter out. For those wondering, the categories I got right were Best Picture, Director, Original Screenplay, Adapted Screenplay, Actor, Supporting Actor, Animated Feature, International Feature, Editing, Song, Sound and Makeup/Hair. I wanted Quiet Girl to win International even though I haven't seen it and it was right up my alley - plus one of my favorite actors was on the jury that selected it as Ireland's entry, but I knew that statistically speaking All Quiet was more likely to win. Was also pleased as punch to see the Guillermo Del Toro Pinocchio get as much awards love as it did - it's so refreshing to see a non-CG movie take the crown for once. One last thing: we got a visit from prominent film/TV actress Mary Walsh some weeks ago, and she revealed that she was pretty close to securing the film rights to Women Talking, before Brad Pitt and Frances McDormand came into the picture, and she kicks herself now and then especially considering how much awards buzz the final film got.

Little late to the party but I think people tend to not think comedic performances are also oscar worthy performances. Hence Jamie Lee Curtis winning. It’s a role that she’s never done before and she took a character that could’ve been largely forgettable and made her one of the most standout moments in the entire film. Even though she didn’t have much screen time. She even had a small emotional arc like all the other characters as well that was surprisingly very touching. To me, her win was very justified, although I do agree that Stephanie Hsu would’ve been a better choice.

I missed most of this year's Oscars due to watching Fox's Animation Domination but I enjoyed what I saw. I'm so glad that my favorite movie of 2022 dominated this year's Oscars. That probably would've been unthinkable a few years ago! 😁👏

I wasn’t expecting this year to be such an improvement. They actually gave animation the respect it deserves. And we got to see both Lady Gaga and Rihanna singing at the Oscars.

I've never cried as much watching an award show than this. The EEAAO sweep (and especially Ke Huy Quan and Michelle Yeoh's wins) and Brendan Fraser being recognized got me right in the heart. I was so happy for all of them.

This just goes to show that even if something is bad right now, that doesn’t mean it’ll stay bad forever. Because change is nature and things DO get better no matter how much we feel to the contrary. That goes for everything whether it be something you love, your issues in life, or even your own country or world, they will all get better in time. =)

One interesting note, Jamaal Bradley, a senior animator that worked at Valve (half life, tf2, portal, etc.) managed to get invited into The Academy to help vote on nominees back in 2020, which is when animation slowly got better nominees before finally getting some real respect. A lot of animators in general started getting in, instead of old white farts voting on what movie their kids watched

The Oscars were good, there were some movies I think could've gotten something NOPE was robbed for sound, like holy shit if you could nominate a movie with buttplug fights nominate the horror sci-fi movie Bodies Bodies Bodies could've gotten a nomination best original screenplay, it was genuinely such a good script that deserved something. Matilda the musical could've gotten a nominations for best actress in a leading role for Alisha Weir's performance as Matilda, and best actress in a supporting role for either Lashana Lynch or Emma Thompson (and maybe a nomination for best original song) This was probably the biggest hot take ever (besides NOPE) but it's what I believe. I just wish a few more things could be nominated per category so other movies can at least be talked about.

All Quiet on the Western Front is one of the greatest war movies of all time. Along with Jojo Rabbit it’s such a beautiful way to show the side of the war that you don’t see. It may just be me having a biased to German history but it was brilliant. The book is amazing as well

Yes totally agreed. This is my alltime favorite ceremony and the first time I have watched in years. I watched because of Everything but was so moved by all the speeches. I was crying quite often. I temporarily got a subscription to live tv just so I could watch the whole ceremony and see these people win their Oscars live. I felt that invested going into it.

i think "all quiet on the western front" is an amazing movie but you really have to be in a specific mood to watch it. It moved me and made me feel disgusted by war even more than I already am. I recommend watching it in German, I think a lot of emotions get lost in dubs :)

IMO Banshee should have won best original screenplay, and Top Gun for Film editing. BUT, this is a rare occasion where I don't mind any of the two/three films or actors in the category to take the win. Because they are all equally amazing in its own unique way. I guess that's what Golden Globe are for, Banshee did win several awards there.

About the animated short, The Boy, The Mole, The Fox, and The Horse, I think this one should be given more of a chance. Yes, the premise is a little vague (I mean, we don’t really learn much about the boy’s history). But in a way, it does what The Peanuts gets right: it tells an uplifting, beautiful tale of perseverance, love, and acceptance 😊

Oscars 2023 was great. The best one compared to these recent years (Although 2019’s was really good too). I am so happy for everyone who worked on Everything Everywhere All At Once (Despite not being my favorite movie of 2022). They deserved all the awards imo. I am happy for all of the other movies too. The acceptance speeches were incredible too. I am so glad that animation wasn’t disrespected this time around and Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio totally deserves the award (Even if Puss in Boots 2 is still my favorite). The speech about animation was beautiful. Animation is art.

the Jamie lee Curtis win is something I like to call a "career" Oscar. It's more about the longevity of the person rather than the particular performance which is rarely their best work.

How did Elvis not win 1 award in this award show? Regarding the wardrobe, they had to make every jumpsuit used in the film accurate to the real ones and in terms of total count, they had to make over 9000 costumes.

i was at a rehearsal dinner for my friend's wedding during the oscars, but the oscars were playing on the tv in the background. every once in a while someone would tune in to what was going on, but naturally we didnt pay a whole lot of attention to the screen. but whe ke huy quan one an oscar, everyone stopped what they were doing to listen to his speech. it was a really cool moment to see a room of 20 to 30 people all celebrate the success of one actor whose character and integrity really strands out

RRR deserved more nominations but I'm so happy and greatful it won its category

You guys have to see the whale. It’s a wonderfully resonating story and James I really think you’ll like it because of it’s theatrical origins. You can really tell that the film was based on a play when you watch it and it only strengthens the film. That was the movie that I think deserved a little more love this year but maybe I only love it so much because I haven’t seen tar, banshees, or fabelmans yet.

honestly, i was kinda pushed back from Everything everywhere all at once when it "went viral" and everybody was talking about. But your review of the ceremony gave me the inspiration to watch it again despite the wide media coverage that this movie got. I'll probably watch it soon, thank you for highlighting the emotional aspects of the whole ceremony so eloquently

This was one of my favorite Oscars in a long time. I was concerned I was going to boycott it again like last year. I didn’t mind Kimmel as the host. And the whole Little Mermaid trailer during the show, it was something to consider due to ABC being owned by Disney so it is kind of a plug on their own channel to promote their own movie. But what did kind of bother me and as well as my dad since we saw it together was the Warner Bros section was ok but a little off putting due to their entire montage not being all their films but their films, New Line Cinema, Castlerock Entertainment, and the acquired MGM films taken when Ted Turner owned WB due to the merger with Turner. But one aspect I also disliked but I don’t know how everyone felt about it is the future releases of future WB/NLC movie montage and ending it with the Flash. I mean I know that it is a highly promoted movie but what’s weighing it down is the whole Ezra Miller controversy. But that’s just me. Anyways, I absolutely am glad that this years Oscars went well and that people like Ke Huy Quan and Brendan Fraser along with Michelle Yeon won their Oscar’s as well as EEAAO won for Best Picture. And for Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio won for Best Animated Film.
