I honestly think John Berton is my favourite guest out of everyone you've had on, he's wonderful!

He's got some stiff competition, but, I think, that I agree.

This is hands down the BEST guest we’ve seen on this show. His experience tied with how amazing his speaking is…such a good episode. Real passion about what they do!! Respects

I love John so much, you can so clearly tell he’s so passionate and loves what he’s talking about and he seems like such a fun and kind guy!

As much as I enjoy the cgi stuff, I *love* when you dissect some old effects. It’s just so impressive.
Vor yearMoritz R +145
John looks like he’s been drawn by Felix Colgrave, who incidentally would make a great guest on animator reacts. If you manage to lure him out of his cave
Vor yearGurren Rodan +10
Some Felix Colgrave animations would also be great CONTENT to react to on one of those episodes.
Vor yearMoritz R +4
@Gurren Rodan that’s exactly why I want him on the show

not only luring him out of his cave, but paying for his flight out to the United States

First time I've seen Felix colgrave mentioned in the wild! His art is my favorite thing to binge every few weeks and is some of the best .. well... ART I've ever seen

I will never cease to be amazed at how good some visual effects were before CGI. That handshake is insane.

John is such a cool guy, super genuine and is really passionate about what he talks about!
Vor yearSona +8
And knows his stuff. What makes a movie look good.

He was such a trooper when they talked about the scorpion king. It was kind of nice to at least give him a platform to provide an explanation for that on top of all the other amazing things he’s worked on.

I recognized him in the first episode and thought Corridor guys already knew he had a scene in the MIB, his face is pretty recognizable haha
Vor yearGuinessHangover +5
Gotta be honest, since the first time I watched it 20 years ago to now, I genuinely thought John's character in the post office was an animatronic made specifically to look like a "weird" human...
Vor yearneoHippie
His look is so unique. He reminded me of that famous Neanderthal man model that was all over the news years ago. His large ears, blue eyes and thin red hair--he could be one walking among us. (Not an insult!)

John is just amazing. I could just just watch him geek out VFX all day.

Vor yearadamsbja +3
Something else I noticed with the transition to puppets at 4:45 is that they're both tired and she's hanging off of him. That makes the change to stop-motion jutteriness look more like fatigue than animation limitations.
Vor yearNix Neato
John is just fantastic, sweet, funny and such a knowledgeable legend. The guy's a keeper. And it's so nice to see so much respect paid to the veterans, kudos guys.
Vor yearjaypills +1
John rocks! He is a great guest on this show. Very good at explaining shots. He just seems like the nicest guy. He didn’t even say anything about him being in the movie. Super smart and probably great to work with on projects. Calm, collected and capable. I see he has a ring on. I hope he has a happy family life and wish him the best. He’s done a lot and I hope he does a lot more and comes back to tell us all about it. ☺️

John is the man. So warm and upbeat but still so technically wise with a huge wealth of experience.
Vor yearnathan o
John burton is pretty good too
Vor 4 MonateAlex Starr +11
Loved seeing John on! I've noticed a trend with a lot of these experts in their craft. First, they understand how their job fits into the whole. They don't focus purely on the technical details, but they understand that the purpose of VFK is to help tell the story. E.g. John loved that Will Smith would improv and they accounted for that in how they shot his scenes, rather than him being annoyed that he has to adjust the plan. Second, these experts recognize there is no cookie-cutter way to do anything. You'll often hear "it depends", it's a bit of a meme but experts understand exactly what should guide the use of one technique vs another and you can only get that with experience.
Vor yearbrompf
It's always awesome to see the people, who have brought the movies come to live, that i have watched 10-20 years ago. And seeing how passionate these people are, especially john just makes those movies even more awesome. I love to see them just geek out over this stuff
Vor yearPhilo Pharynx +1
I love when different types of effects people do such great work together. Rick Baker is legendary. He's done such amazing work. When Berton makes something that balances and augments it, it's truly a melding of different art.
Vor yearIgor Spiratti +1
This was amazing. Those early VFX pioneers really were geniuses. I love seeing these early films still blowing peoples minds with their techniques and solutions to the ideas they had.
Vor yearpoodlemeister22314 +1
I am so glad we get to see a lot more of the tricks and smoke and mirrors they had to pull off in older movies, amazing

John should teach visual effects classes, if he isn't already. He has that calm, and clear, yet passionate way of explaining what is going on.

He should be in of those Masterclass courses!!
Vor yearNoa Pestana +3
Super relaxed chill person combined with tons of knowledge and insight makes for such a great guest. Loved it!!
Vor yearDeKai
Men in Black's effects are so incredibly well done. Not many of the 90s effect movies hold up so well. Which is doubly impressive when considering that these kinds of CG effects were so new in that time.
Vor yearDepletedWisdom +1
I think Wren is a great interviewer. His excitement feels genuine and you can tell it is contagious with the guest. It seems to lead the guest to be more open and want to talk about what they love doing.
Vor yearTclans +16
John is an absolute gem of a person with such great knowledge. That ending sentence resonated with me, having watched Prey (the new Predator installment) yesterday, that comment thicked all the boxes. In my opinion that movied did just that. Also a good movie to scrutinize the VFX and practical effects.
Vor yearSpecter247 +273
I honestly feel John is one of the best guests you've ever had. His passion for the craft, depth of knowledge and wealth of experience make him an invaluable source to draw upon, and it's wonderful to see him devoting the time to come and share what he has accumulated with the rest of us.

Y'all should react to the evolution of Godzilla movies over the decades. It's a great example of the progression of VFX over time.
Vor yearJacky Chang +14
That's a really good idea. Over the course of generations, we see the upgrades of the suitmation and the blending of environments. As well as the different energy attacks on the actors and buildings.
Vor yearJason Blalock +15
The VFX in Shin Godzilla are really impressive. I honestly thought they used some kind of puppet in at least some of the shots, but no, iirc it was all CGI.
Vor yearDavid DM +1
good idea
Vor yearGoldenkitten1 +11
Comparing the original Gojira, The Return of Gojira (1984) and Shin Gojira would be an excellent episode. They're three distinct films from three distinct periods. Gojira is the grandfather of such effects, 1984 was a turning point for their ability to articulate and Shin Gojira was the first film to be truly modern (not counting the American Godzilla films, but those were big-budget CGI fests so not as interesting to delve into how they did it).

Passionnate people are always a blast to talk to. John is really a cool guest. Hope we'll see him someday. As always looking back to old visual / practical effects is really a treat. I wish you could do it more often.
Vor yearCammyBedford +3
On reflection, the amount of quality VFX that the Corridor Crew achieve on their very limited budget is incredible. Just picture the scale of stuff they could do if they had a blockbuster budget. Just millions and millions thrown at them to kick out the best stuff it’d be mind blowing, they’d blow it out the water🤯
Vor yearFexin Fierce +1
Out of all the guest, John Berton is my favorite. He looks and sounds like such a down to earth guy.
Vor yearRicky Boyd
I am not in any shape or form a VFX artist or even involved in movie making. But these videos really let me appreciate what goes into making a good scene and even a bad scene that has a ton of work in it. I love these segments! Informative, creative and at its core, problem solving on the hoof. There is so much more happening behind the scenes than the camera ever tells you when finished for the final cut. Keep up the amazing work and the amazing guests.
Vor yearDan
THIS WAS EXCELLENCE. More of John, and i mean overall, the quality of the guests and these series are unparalleled online anywhere.
Vor yearAcedeadic +627
Everything, Everywhere, All At Once should be reacted to definitely. For having a low budget compared to many other movies, it was able to achieve so much with their combination of computer and practical effects. Also, LEGEND - A DRAGON BALL TALE is an amazing fan animation that can show what can be created by dedicated fans for animators react.

I'd love to see you guys react to: -Fight Club. This film has some impressive CGI shots. I especially love the intro! - Spiderman 1 (2002) -Spiderman 3 (2007) - the sandman and venom effects. It'd be interesting to compare it to Venom from 2018 and 2021. - Silent Hill (2006) - the otherworld transitions, the monsters designs are impressive, and the part where Dark Alessa "Integrates" herself into Rose is also very cool. -Stranger Things - they have such great vfx shots! especially in season 4. Also, in Season 4, they have a very impressive one shot shooting scene. It'd be cool to see you analyze it.
Vor yeartadeas burger
Did Venom even have an effect in Spiderman 3? They just used the actors face, didn't they?
Vor yearethai1 +12
@tadeas burger The shots where the vines move and make up venom's face/reveal eddie's face are kinda cool, plus the shots where peter rips it off and then it goes to eddy. The whole "goo" effects look impressive for 2007 imo.

Vor yearXenoKaiju +355
Another small detail I love about Mikey in Men In Black: when he roars into the camera, the background plate adjusts focus as if that CGI model is a real thing and the camera guy has to keep it's face in focus.
Vor yearZachary Luna +40
Reminds me of my favorite tiny detail in Jurassic Park, when the T-rex first breaks out of the paddock and steps out in a full CGI shot that shows the entire dinosaur for the first time. As the T-Rex steps up and out where the fence is broken, it rears up a little "too far" and the camera has to subtly tilt up to follow it and keep it in frame, as if an actual animal did something unexpected and the cameraman had to adjust in response. Of course the reality is that things had to be planned in the opposite sequence of events, but it goes such a long way in subconsciously convincing your brain that the character is "real" regardless of how rendering and shaders and "detail" has improved in the years since it was released.
Vor yearMD +1
Really cool detail, little things like that go such a long way in adding realism to the composition
Vor yearHelplmChoking
holy crap I love this guy! Not only are the 2 MIB films absolute classics and some of my favourite in terms of artistic direction and the VFX -- it all just works, there are no real rough moments and it holds up even 20 years on. Same with iRobot, actually. But he also seems like a super cool dude, really passionate and really seems to approach things as part artist an part engineer/technician. Like he has such a strong '90's ILM' vibe, when they were the absolute kings of VFX so good you didn't question what was real and what wasn't but not chasing hyperrealism like we have now so they let all the art come through. Definitely strong similarities to Adam Savage honestly. And I love the stories about the CGI Supervisor ending up running around a set in an alien costume for reference footage, or being "volunteered" to be the alien in MIIB even as the VFX supervisor
Vor yearalZiiHardstylez +1
John having the insight and vibe to match. Good bloke to have on the show.
Vor yearsergeantbigmac
I consider these movies part of my childhood and that mailroom scene is buried deep in my memory. I say this because I recognized that dude immediately. No matter how short that shot is (they even mention it was only a few seconds in the video) Johns admittedly odd alien looking appearance was burned into my 8 year old mind I guess lol. Thank you John for your work.
Vor 5 MonatePeter Givenbless
I love it when you guys break down older, predigital, effects. I think that 'Prisoner of Zenda' split was actually around the turtle neck collar as a rigid brace could have been connected to the tree trunk allowing the actor and his stand-in to have the exact matching neck position in each shot.
Vor yearThatPurpleGirl
John is a treasure and you guys always make my Saturday 💜
Vor yearMike Kohary +99
John is awesome, and I love when you guys go over old pre-CGI effects. So awesome to see the creativity and craftsmanship that went into these amazing shots.
Vor yearJuniversal
I've been thinking forever they should have a series or episodes dedicated to practical effects and animatronics. It is truly a lost artform. Some of the most magical and mind blowing effects were animatronic or makeup fx predating CGI.
Vor yearChris Shaw
I love seeing the episodes with some of the OG's of CGI based VFX. Sure, things have changed a lot since Terminator 2 but these guys had such primative software in comparison to the suite we have now and they made it look so good. John is such a cool guy to listen to.

Really enjoying this series. Two things I'd love to see you guys react to: - Prehistoric Planet (any part really, but the Velociraptor, Mononykus, Deinocheirus, Corythoraptor, the Mosasaurus getting cleaned, and the glowing ammonites really made me go, "I hope they react to this because it's stunning") - A comparison of the CGI clone troopers from Episodes 2-3 & book of boba fett and the live-action one's from Obi-Wan and just seeing how both hold up, what each does better, and just how the clone CGI has aged.
