When i saw that scene as a kid i remember instinctively thinking something along the lines of "Oh that is smart of them to use an average looking unassuming dude as the alien's cover as that's what you'd want if you were an alien and your objective were to blend in". Now that i'm older i realize intelligence agencies do this for disguise as well. Like on that one Lex Fridman podcast where he had Andrew Bustamante and he said his go-to look was "going muj (as in mujihadeen, or, "very average looking brown guy with long hair and big beard you would assume would be anything other than a CIA spy)". Attractiveness bias is a very real cognitive bias that people have to remain aware of (after all that's how Ted Bundy effortlessly lured so many women to their death remember) Maybe i overthought it but that stood out to me as a great way to sell the scene/joke. John has a very distinct look but at the same time is just a normal average everyday dude you'd see just about anywhere and never think he were a famous VFX artist, an alien or a CIA spy. Like Bustamante said (and i'm paraphrasing cuz i don't remember the exact words he used) "a janitor sure, maybe a convenience store owner, even a hobo...never a spy" (ironically the guy just naturally looks like a hippie stoner and the last dude you'd think was CIA spook lol) That is what makes it work when they go "oh that dudes definitely an alien!" cuz your brain woulda never assumed that in a general real world context but deep inside that's exactly the kind of stereotype you'd default to if handed a bunch of pictures of gorgeous models and average Joe's and told to point out the alien (unless it included people who have gotten so many plastic surgeries due to body dysmorphia disorder like certain celebs and transgender ppl, which i think was referenced in one of the films as well actually. Funnily enough ppl would be cancelled for saying these things nowadays and that's why comedies aren't funny anymore and will Smith slapped Chris Rock in the mouth but i digress...) You can have a little nervous laugh about it cuz it shows how we all make assumptions of people based on looks and flips it on its head. It's actually quite clever and i don't even know if they were thinking all this at the time when they did it but i'd give them the benefit of the doubt as they are all pretty clever people John included. Regardless i'm glad he was a good sport about it and took one for the team as it sold the shot and immortalized him in a pretty clever sight gag.

Loved seeing John on! I've noticed a trend with a lot of these experts in their craft. First, they understand how their job fits into the whole. They don't focus purely on the technical details, but they understand that the purpose of VFK is to help tell the story. E.g. John loved that Will Smith would improv and they accounted for that in how they shot his scenes, rather than him being annoyed that he has to adjust the plan. Second, these experts recognize there is no cookie-cutter way to do anything. You'll often hear "it depends", it's a bit of a meme but experts understand exactly what should guide the use of one technique vs another and you can only get that with experience.

@Goldenkitten1 They did film the puppet but ultimately they did not use any of the footage in the final film. The CGI model was created based on scans of it though IIRC.

Vor Monat

@Goldenkitten1 another trio of films that might make a good episode would be 'Mothra vs Godzilla' (1964), 'Godzilla vs Mothra: Battle for Earth' (1992), and 'Godzilla: Tokyo SOS' (2003) - three films from different eras tackling the same face-off between two of Toho's most iconic characters. A breakdown on the variations between both practical & visual effects used, as well as differences in the overall approach, would be pretty neat.

Vor Monat

@ItsInugami Biollante would indeed be a cool deep dive. Unfortunately I doubt they could get anyone on that could do anymore than speculate. Many techniques from the heisei era are locked away in the minds of those that made the movies with little physical evidence to show for it. At least not without doing an extensive cleansing of every topic on the internet.

Reminds me of my favorite tiny detail in Jurassic Park, when the T-rex first breaks out of the paddock and steps out in a full CGI shot that shows the entire dinosaur for the first time. As the T-Rex steps up and out where the fence is broken, it rears up a little "too far" and the camera has to subtly tilt up to follow it and keep it in frame, as if an actual animal did something unexpected and the cameraman had to adjust in response. Of course the reality is that things had to be planned in the opposite sequence of events, but it goes such a long way in subconsciously convincing your brain that the character is "real" regardless of how rendering and shaders and "detail" has improved in the years since it was released.

Just watched Dracula Untold and there are some amazing special effects with some of the dark powers stuff near the end and the interactions with sunlight. Love to see your take on it.
