I meet Arnold while I was in Iraq and he was extremely nice and very approachable this guy wasn’t and it was clear he thought we were all stupid. That's what one would assume, but after watching the video i came to a different conclusion than you. Both seemed a bit starstruck, but wren seemed less energetic and more shy than his usual on screen self, while Sam was in his element and seemed to be enjoying it, even getting emotional and talking freely and confidently. Talking about memes or whatever the word for mouth shape is.. But Adam seemed to be into it also as a fellow nerd geek movie fan and fellow creator, since it fits in nicely with Adams experience and knowledge of real life puppetry and how real puppets mouth move. Great episode, one of the best yet. Wish Adam talked more about TMNT 2 the movie. That had some of the best puppets and suits and monsters. Or at least as I remembered it. They looked mean and threatening, even grotesque. Reminded me of like gremlins or some classic 80s horror movie in that vein.

One interesting thing about Little Shop of Horrors which had a giant animated character, animated by a bunch of puppeteers, shot by an undercranked camera forcing actors having to act at half speed. That movie was shot on the sound stage, next to Aliens which featured a giant Queen alien. I remember how they used it in promo for capabilities of MAYA 3D studio when it was new. It was unique to render so much moving characters. They made bugs 4 legged because 6 legged were too complicated for render.

I absolutely love that you got Adam on as a guest - He's both a props and practical effects wizard AND a starstruck child in seeing other peoples work and contributions. Such a gem!

It never ceases to amaze me the amount of detail that goes into these effects. It’s something we easily take for granted while watching.

@David Jacobs It's come full circle in my opinion, but instead of how did they do that, the amazement is in the creativity of the approach and the precision in the execution.

What I'm about to say doesn't apply to the movies in this episode, but I wanted to say that sometimes great VFX work is hampered by being in a crummy film. If the writing and acting is poor quality then the awesome VFX work goes down with the ship. So many films they've covered I wouldn't have thought twice about the effects because I didn't like the film.

They are supposed to be taken for granted. Kinda why this channel annoys me because it’s spoiling the magic of effects in movies. It’s like a magician telling you how he does all his tricks.

@Sir Richard the Easily Startled I lived for those kind of special when I was a kid (I'm 59). the first I recall was the "Making of Star Wars" that aired on ABC only a couple of months after the film's debut, narrated by William Conrad. For a while, they were a "ratings draw" on network television because the "TV Guide" would have full page ads for these "specials". Of course, I had an ongoing subscription to "StarLog" magazine which also covered these subjects, but seeing motion film footage of artisans working on this stuff was so much more intriguing than photographic stills...unless it caught part of a miniature in high fidelity! 😉

@David Jacobs I know what you mean, but most people can't relate to even the simplest CGI explanations. But when it's explained that a wonderful effect was created using elastic bands and matchsticks and mirrors then they know what those things are and can take delight in the imagination and creativity which transformed them from the mundane to the magical.

The wealth of filmmaking knowledge and history this man shares floors me every time. I could listen to him for hours.

Y'all touched on some of my all time favorites. I have been mesmerized and stymied by the puppetry effects from Little Shop my whole life and hearing how much work and precision went into crafting it makes my heart happy!

With every year that passes (nearly 25 years), I am still amazed how well the digital bugs hold up in Starship Troopers.

WOW, normally I am just having my thoughts confirmed. I have been interested in VFX for movies for decades. Today in 2022 Adam blows my mind by correcting my 40 years wrong understanding of how FX were done on some of my favorite movies.

Go check out his Tested channel. If you don't mind a lack of visual examples, it's Adam just vividly relaying anecdote after anecdote, answering viewer questions, making stuff. It's pretty great! Also his livestreams during the first lockdown were a lifesaver. We got to watch Adam go through something all of us were going through. Right now the new livestreams are only for the Youtube patrons and the ypost segments on the channel publicly, but if you can catch them they're worth it.

I was blown away by the character Nivellan in "A Grain of Truth", the second episode of the new season of The Witcher. Would love to hear your thoughts on why that combination of practical and digital effects worked so well. Especially considering how... questionable some of the effects from the first season were.

It s always amazing to see how such an eye to detail can make models look real. Has the crew looked at the train chase finale from The Lone Ranger? One of the breakdowns show that they had physical trains, but there must be some CGI in the backgrounds and explosions?

SST is still my favourite film to this day, how it went downhill so badly for the other two is beyond me. Wish they'd make new sequels to the first and give it the trilogy it deserves.

I remember hearing that Starship Troopers was actually fairly well received overseas but flopped in America because they didn't get the satire which was a hilarious bit of irony at the time

I think because Starship Troopers seemed specifically about an American, Californian white-teeth sort of fascism (even though in the film it's a global fascist society) and because the novel is still so loved in certain circles, it soured US audiences on it. Verhoeven wasn't shy about advertising the fact that he was showing what a Pax Americana would look like taken to its most global, extreme form.

I don't mind the satire, I love his same treatment to Robocop. My problem was with the treatment of the source material. I like the book and wanted something other than Epic Movie 2 from Veerhoven. I appreciate the take on American exceptionalism and the propaganda jokes are on point, but I can't have a conversation about the universe with anyone that doesn't involve concepts from the film instead of the book.

@LordVader1094 the screenwriter did read the book though, the people who made the film understood the book completely and found it to be pro fascist

It's an old one now, but you guys might want to check out the effects in a movie called Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus. They certainly are "special" effects. The submarine was my favorite from memory.

Yes - but it's not just Adam. Oh and it's not just the special effects. I love the stunt-people as well. Penny just dropped with me that whilst "corridor crew" is/was notionally about the CGI that they could do - they now provide a great 'frame' to let experts in all the interesting areas talk about all the disciplines that it takes to put a film on a screen. Makes sense that they're focussing on the overlap with that they've done - but just realizing how many other topics there are (sound design, costumes, prosthetics, cinematography, production on a budget, handling a sequel, etc etc) Basically - we all know 'the good films' - but there must be thousands of great stories to be told about great things in all those bad films. I'm just thinking of all those bad films, that had great DVD extras.

You guys read my mind! I was watching Little Shop Of Horrors again recently, and I was really wondering about Audrey 2. Obviously it's a puppet, but my GOSH what an incredible puppet it had to be. I kept wondering, was some of it visual effects? Couldn't be CGI, there was no CGI then, I don't think. At least not that sophisticated.

Wow, I always thought the blade runner shots were amazing, even better than the new ones, but i had no idea why. This is fascinating! those wide shots just look astonishing.

Would love to see you all talk about the "Scepter" scene on the Helicarrier in the first avengers. How did they do the camera flip and still make all the CGI work? It blows my mind everytime I watch it.

Starship Troopers is one of my favorite films, and I so didn’t get it at first. I blame the bad marketing behind it. And me not being so smart.

Ever since I started watching you guys I enjoy movies differently...I look for those little details creators put in, I watch for the special effects, and now notice beautiful camera work

I would really like to see an animators react to Encanto, I think some of the cloth sims in that are incredible, every female character is wearing a dress that look absolutely amazing in motion. Not to mention the choreography for a lot of the musical numbers, just a really well done animation that I’d love to see y’all get Alexander Snow on again to talk about it since he worked on the animations for it.

I’m looking forward to Wrens one day build with Adam.

Starship Troopers was amazing on so many levels. It's one of the few times in my life I've been to see a movie several times at the cinema.

Love Starship Troopers even though the only thing it takes from the Heinlein book is the name. It's fun because you can watch it as either a satire or a gung ho war movie. The duality of human nature at it's best.

So happy Adam Savage is still active. Definitely one of my childhood heroes
