The benefits of vaccines far outweigh the minuscule risks, but some parents still question their safety. John Oliver discusses why some people may still feel uncertainty about childhood vaccinations.

If vaccine would cause autism (which they absolutly don‘t), than I would just have one more reason to be thankful, that my mom got me vaccinated. I find it incredibile helpful in this pandemic to not need constant human contact and to be able to keep contact to a minimum without suffering any psycological damage.

Vor 7 MonateJay Ayerson
@Katie F Imagine misreading John Oliver's sarcasm that badly. I think of it more like 'it's a bit like skydiving without a parachute. You can choose not to vaccinate, but you really shouldn't.' Also, as an aside, there are plenty of reasons why women might want to have an abortion - inability to provide, inability to care, unsafe pregnancy, major genetic illness, rape... Forcing women to jump through hoops for medical care is not okay. I've met a number of mothers who've also had to make that awful decision, so that they can better care for a child later. Developmentally, an embryo is more or less indistinguishable without specialised equipment, and in my personal case my mother didn't know she was pregnant with me until after the first trimester. It's okay, there are books and therapists that can help with understanding satire. I know from experience. (edits for clarity)

After the deep-dive that Hbomberguy did regarding Wakefield, John's practically pouring praise onto him. Wakefield is a man who, when hired by a lawmaker hoping to profit from vaccinations, abused children, altered findings to claim an apparent connection between autism and an intestinal disorder after patenting his own measles vaccine that was so flawed, it would never have passed testing. Given the resources to further expand upon his findings, he waffed it, because he knew he could not replicate his study under strict scrutiny. When a reporter, Brian Deer, investigated, Wakefield tried to silence him in a lawsuit, then dropped it when the judge ruled that Deer would have full, unredacted entry into Wakefield's notes and findings. This was a man that was PRO vaccine wanting to make money, now stuck with an ANTI vaccine audience to survive and remain relevant, even appearing on Infowars, a man who also makes up things in order to make money.

So re. the whole, "the age when kids get the MMA vaccine is the age that diagnosable signs of autism start to appear". I have ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder). I have severe insomnia, which is common for ASD, and I'm told I had it from basically day one. Mind you, that's anecdotal, and it's difficult to distinguish signs of autism from normal variations in infant sleeping habits. Still pretty interesting to consider that you might be able to observe subtle indications of ASD in preverbal children, possibly another route to consider in terms of proving there's no correlation? Not that I want to encourage more pointless studies, but I'd like people to vaccinate more and if that's what it takes.

I don’t remember what her condition was, but there was a girl in my elementary that we’ll call Y. Y had constant heart and breathing problems, and an extreme vulnerability during flu season. She had so many periods when she was absent from school for days at a time. She had to do a presentation in each of her classes every single year to make sure that people knew how vulnerable she was. Y could’ve very very easily died from something like measles, so when parents started avoiding vaccines when I was little, she had to work with the teachers to make it clear it was necessary. If someone was sick they had to stay home or they’d likely kill her. She is alright now, and her immune system has improved since she was little. But it’s knowing someone like that, someone so susceptible to anything, that makes me cautious. I always made sure to be careful when feeling nauseous, sick, anything, but I know people who don’t give a shit. It’s worrying to know that all of this is going on when I know how vulnerable Y is. I just hope that anyone who believes vaccines are awful and cause autism, anything, I hope they learn. Not just for their children’s sake, but for Y and others like her.

I realised because there was an audience and Jon looked much younger. Ever since he's living in the states, he started ageing rapidly xD One might have nothing to do with the other, then again, Jon has a lot to worry about there. But yeah, sadly, a lot of his shows might as well be repeated 4 years later and still ring true. I'm, just hoping they do age a bit in 10-30 years. but like blackamateurflame says, many things don't really change... Healthcare will still be a mess, rich will be better off than poor, race and gender will remain to have issues. But... Black people are being heard, gay people are allowed and embraced. Just not by everybody, but it the sentiment would be unimaginable 30-50 years ago. So things do change a bit, while they persist. I suppose it's a glass half full, or empty kind of thing.

As an Autistic person: Do you know how horrible it is to constantly be told that people would rather have their baby die than be autistic? Autism is not a broken brain it is a different one.
Vor 2 yearsSir Prize
@Rebecca This heavily depends on your definition of learning disability. People tend to use learning disorder and learning disability interchangeably (heck, even I'm somewhat guilty of that) which leads to misunderstandings. Most people with difficulty learning fall under the "learning disorder" category because their brains are just different, and usually they can be completely functional once a psychologist figures out the correct learning strategy for that particular person. Learning disability is more serious and usually refers to significant trauma or damage that heavily impairs an individual's ability to learn and retain information. Like autistic folks, they may have specific tasks that they are exceptionally good at, such as spatial reasoning, organization, etc, but will likely severely lack in other areas. I think on a broader level your point is the same as mine though. My point here is that every brain is different and nobody should be judged by their disability/disorder.

When I was in elementary school, a new kid came to our class. We were all told in class his name, where he came from, and what he was going through. He was fighting an aggressive leukemia, and in order to keep him healthy and allowed to play and work along side with us, we had to wear paper masks and wash our hands according to the bell (she had an alarm clock set on her desk for it). If we did not feel well, tell our parents before coming to school, and if we had a fever, arrangements would be made if we were unable to stay home. This was also sent home and had to be signed by our parents and at Open House it was re-explained to everyone at once so we all understood. Everybody followed the rules. He stayed healthy (and beat it, he is 38 years old today). Nobody complained. End of story. What the hell happened to common decency in the USA?

After re-watching this again thinking about it, it might seem like it is bad for a doctor to compromise with the parent if they want vaccines to be spaced out. But here's the thing, regardless of how it might seem these parents are still afraid of having their child being vaccinated all at once. What this doctor proposed was a theoretical plan to give parents comfort, and I would prefer the parent do that over not vaccinating the child at all because of their fear. It's not ideal of course but unless you can change the parent's mind it is ultimately their decision since a baby can't make its own decisions. So yeah I was with this guy, I don't agree at all with his theoretical plan but at least by giving the parent what they want you can still get the child vaccinated over not getting vaccinated. Then the doctor just had to say "vaccines don't cause autism except for when they do", I instantly switched sides.
Vor yearBabe one
Fun fact. The Doctor who invented the vaccine for the polio was this guy 0:27 Jonas Salk. And he chose not to patent the vaccine or seek any profit from it. One interview he was asked 'who owned this patent?' he said: "There is no patent. Could you patent the sun?" Cool dude.

Am guessing that the ability to tell it like it is, to take on any topic whatsoever and to be backed fully by his network and to be totally fearless of who is offended, makes repeated relevance inevitable. Kudos to the no doubt ulcerous network exec assigned to ride herd on the Last Week Tonight show. This show is brilliant.

Okay, so something I do want to say is that although I absolutely believe in the normal schedule of vaccines, getting them slowly is better than not getting them at all. So if that's what the doctor is trying to do (which he probably isn't) then I think that's a not-as-terrible idea.

As an autistic person, my parents freaked out and worried a lot when they found out about the potential "link" between autism and vaccines. To which I responded: A. Dad, you are also autistic. That's where I got it from. Not the medicine that saves people's lives. B. I'm honestly happy to be autistic. It lets me see the world in a way that not many people can, and it's beautiful. C. I'd much rather be autistic than dead, and I'm pretty sure that most people would agree. Individuals with high functioning autism can lead full and happy lives. Individuals who get these illnesses that we vaccinate for can be crippled for life, if not killed by those illnesses. I understand that low functioning autism is a whole different beast, but I'm betting that most of them still want to live, and, if not, there are ways to end their lives that don't put other people at risk. And, after much investigation, D. The scientific community agrees as universally as is possible that there is no link. I think that many parents who have grown up themselves in a vaccinated society, without the plagues that have devastated populations throughout history, think that those plagues entail a light fever, a stuffy nose, and a few days outside of school, since that's all they've ever experienced (or at least, all that they remember). The life-threatening reality of those illnesses is so distant that they cannot comprehend it, unless something like what happened in Minnesota happens to them, and then it becomes all too real. They don't understand the deadly risk of these illnesses, and so "autism" (a condition that can be very difficult to understand) seems much scarier than something with a cute name like "measles", even though Autism, even in extreme cases, very rarely leads to serious injury or death, while measles can easily have serious and permanent complications. But the best part is, they don't even need to make a choice, since *vaccines don't cause autism.*

Perhaps we should have some sort of "vaccine testing" to determine safety and efficacy. Perhaps there should be a kind of "health-care expert" that we could ask stupid questions to and doubt.

@Love is the most powerful force in the Universe It is correct that Autism was first discovered well before the 90's, however most of the time it was misunderstood as being "weird" or just never found. Most of the diagnoses today are for much smaller forms, the kind that could have been looked over when Autism wasn't well known. And in the severe cases, many people would simply send these people to the mental "hospitals" of the day.
Vor 11 MonateLogidodoPlyz
@comett itun No, I know it's been two years. I have a friend who is autistic, Autism is a major issue and needs to be dealt with accordingly. It definitely isn't easy to fix, however, vaccines aren't the cause. I understand the pseudoscience behind anti-vax, however it has been disproven time and time again.

Measles survivor here. It went through our neighborhood in 1955, and nobody was particularly sick except for me. 105F fevers for two days cooked my eyes and cost me permanent vision degradation, my hair fell out and I was left with hearing distortion that is crippling when I'm tired or distracted. No measles vax existed back then; we'd just gotten the Salk vax and were thrilled to have it. Several kids in my town were permanently crippled and one died, thanks to polio. I honestly don't understand how loving parents can allow their children to go through the hell of contagious diseases that our great grandparents would have sold their souls for. Visit an old cemetery and look at the little headstones. You won't often see just one; they're clustered in groups of three, four and sometimes five or six, all with dates a few days apart. These were someone's children, and they all died around the same time of the same thing: infections disease. It's not something to screw around with. Seriously.

Thank you for reminding us all how much we benefit from routine immunization! I am grateful to be vaccinated against tetanus, diphtheria, whooping cough, hep A and B, polio, measles, and so many more. I’m sorry we didn’t have a Covid vaccine earlier. I had Covid Christmas 2020, when almost no one could be vaccinated. I’m a long hauler with memory, breathing, and fatigue issues. Several relatives have been hospitalized. And my sister-in-law died of Covid in July 2020. I’m thankful we can get vaccinated now. I’m vaxxed and boosted to protect my community and myself.

@Kris Aaron I trust Virologists and doctors who understand vaccines far more than conspiracy freaks. Have you ever listened to the real experts? Watch any Congressional hearings on vaccines with the CDC. Search “Dr. William Thompson “full audio” to hear from the CDC’s senior scientist and lead epidemiologist. Watch the world’s most recognized Virologist, Dr. Stanley Plotkin under oath answering honest questions about vaccine safety and fraudulent studies. He is very pro-vaccine. But, you’ll learn a lot. Lastly, just to prove my point about how much doctors know, watch the President of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Dr. Teresa Holtrop, answering questions under oath. I listen to the experts. I only deal in factual information. No conspiracy theories.

My father actually got caught up in the early 2000s anti-vaccine hysteria (thankfully after I had most of my shots) and so he skipped out on getting me my chicken pox booster when I was a child. This didn't really have an effect on me until I became an adult, and I ended up contracting chicken pox. Suffice it to say that I'm still really pissed about that, although I'm happy to say that my father eventually managed to pull himself out of the antivaxx community before covid hit. I'd hate to see what he'd be like if he hadn't tbh

Vor yearRosyna Keller
Chicken pox is the Herpes zoster virus, and like all herpes, it’ll re-emerge latter in life (at this point it’s called “shingles” because it took until 1943 to link them as the same virus), often causing severe nerve damage that leads to permanent, debilitating pain.

17:23 "That sounds like a decent compromise, because it's the middle ground position right? The problem is it's the middle ground between sense, and nonsense. It'd be like saying" it's crazy to eat an entire bar if soap, so I'll just eat half of it" That clip should be sent to every reasonable, rational person who finds themselves in a compulsory scenario of compromising because of alleged fairness. Just because you're arguing with someone doesn't automatically mean they have to be right about something. They don't. Some people are completely and utterly flat wrong, and they're not going to get any better if they're not completely called out Also, this clip needs to be sent to every Democrat in the federal government. The entire Republican strategy is to counter Democratic proposals with the complete opposite, then try to force Democrats into a compromise of half of what they wanted to do. Luckily Democrats didn't fall for that for once with the Covid relief bill, but I'm afraid they'll eventually fall into bad habits with the infrastructure and/or families acts. If you're not getting a good faith oppositional proposal, then it's your duty and responsibility to just ignore them and do it anyway. Screw compromising with bull****

That immunologist at the end is right: Mothers in industrialized countries have forgotten how good they have it. The only thing stopping their kid from dying is that we have the medicine to prevent it. If you're not going to use it, women in India and Sub-Saharan Africa would be more than willing to take it off your hands.

@L Haviland likewise in multiple African countries with a high extremist population. Christopher Hitchens actually wrote about religion and medicine in God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything, and I feel it is not only applicable to islam. There are plenty of American Christian/Protestant populations, which don't only refuse vaccines, but medical treatment for many other things, such as food poisoning and diabetes type I. It is incredibly sad, as there are literally graveyards of children who have died from negligence and their parents' lack of education.
Vor 3 yearsAnna Walters
Except that most mothers (like me) do in fact vaccinate so making blanket statements about how stupid mothers are is unhelpful. I know exactly how good we have it, am fully vaccinated myself and have no concerns about vaccinating my baby. Unfortunately a very small number of people is all it takes to damage heard immunity.
