The ramp was a complete mess that night. I don't even know how I made it into work that night. We got 6 inches of snow and ice that day prior to this happening.

Sounds like a perfect example of effective communication and details to prevent further incidents and damage. Cockpit resource management and communications with involved parties. Tower controller didn’t panic with unnecessary conversation and contacts UPS to verify traffic behind them could clear the area and reduce further impact to operations. Incident aircraft verified he was beyond the hold short line which pretty much means that runway is unusable at least at that portion. Being snow probably shuts the runway down for take off and landing. With two runways the landings were probably the other side of the airport and any landings would be moved to 35R of able.....

A run up is basically where you stand on the brakes and throttle up to a high power and hold it there for 30 seconds (or some amount of seconds). It’s just to make sure the engines provide power correctly, they spool up correctly, etc. [not a pilot just an avgeek]

@Meagan Foreman I was under the impression that they lacked sufficient traction to turn and slid off the runway. You are saying they couldnt see where they were going and just drove off the side?

The thrust wasn’t the issue, the taxiway had so much snow on it that the pilots couldn’t see the taxi lines.

Vor Monat
747-pilot
747-pilot

@Jersey Shore Drone Services You're welcome! I must slightly clarify what I said above. Differential thrust is used sometimes in tricky circumstances. But it is done very rarely, and needs to be done very judiciously! (since you asked if they _ever_ do it). It is done to negotiate out of tight spaces, or sometimes to make very tight turns, but *not* for low traction situations like this!

@lina nicolia "Snow" is a very generous description of this mess. We had a major ice storm down here in TN and KY this week (well, technically more like a minor ice storm, a major ice storm, and then another major ice storm that also had some snow with no melting in between.) More freezing rain than snow in many places (a lot more here.) Good luck getting solid ice off of a taxiway with a blower or a sweeper. Even a plow isn't going to do much other than remove the layer of snow on top that's actually adding traction. My trees have been coated in ice continuously since Thursday of last week (i.e. this is the 10th day.) They have around 3/4 of a inch of solid ice on them right now.

I was expecting my Xbox the next day from fedex so I keyed up the mic and asked “hey there fedex heavy, would you guys happen to ahem, have my new Xbox on board?” And I got a response from them actually. FO or captain (not sure) was like “let me check the manifest for you real quick and I’ll get back to you on that” A minute later he came back on and was like “well, I got 36 units of the brand new Xbox on board. What city are you in?” So I told him my city and he replied “ah well, there are only two going to (said city) so one of them must be yours!” And I thanked him and my copilot and I had a nice laugh afterwards. Pretty fun conversation

Honestly, with a taxiway excursion they may have been able to still take off that night, after an inspection.
