This guy is a living legend. I recently reached out to him to help support and inspire my Dad to go through some important medical procedures that he was scared of and refusing. I didn't expect much but 2 days later he called Dad and managed to convince him. He has told me to call him anytime Dad needs anything. Completely blown away by his generosity of spirit. Furthermore he lives by the principals. Never miss the chance to inspire.

I saw this speech about 1.5 years ago, as a teenager going through an existential crisis who has been searching for motivational speeches, I strangely found this speech the most inspirational. And just the fact that an action so small, can change the course of our day, fascinates me. So I fixed my bed every day, even on days when I had to change the sheets right after, because 1. It looks and makes me feel tidier and 2. For the reason this great man said, it's the first step in changing the world, as peculiar as it may sound. I must say, it definitely changed my look on life and honed my discipline.

This video has changed my life and was a big part of me being able to finish strong and avoid crashing hard during a terrible high school experience. I will never allow myself, or any of those I know, to ever be in a situation like I was again. I was really struggling during those times. I needed help finding the courage deep down to refuse to let go of my visions, to see the light in the distance. When McRaven mentions that there was “no ambient light”, that really resonated with me. I applied underqualified and out of state to UT Austin specifically mentioning my story listening this and how it kept me moving forward. To my surprise ended up getting in. I’ve ultimately decided to take scholarship money at TCU with it being a better fit, sorry Longhorn fans, but thank you Admiral McRaven for inspiring me to find myself through challenge. I will always come back to this video.

The role/job and duties of a President like most other roles/jobs has been pretty well defined and it makes it very hard to stray from the job description.

Honestly we don't deserve him. Media would find a way to tear him down, call him every kind of -ism in the book, and further divide this country. Never lose hope but this is one of our darkest hours and he would be driven into the ground by us animals. Change won't come from the top down. It's starts with each of us. Seek moderation, empathy, and negotiation with those you disagree with first. That will change the world.

I first ever saw this as an army cadet in Highschool. Despite the fact that I no longer do cadets this will forever be my favourite classroom lesson of my time at the caded unit. We went on camps staying up until midnight and being woken up by reveille at 5:30am and walking though the freezing cold with frost sticking to your boots and webbing being able to see your breath and being so physically exhausted you wanted to collapse but after watching this as a unit together, we all had a new sense of hope. Some of those people went on to be part of the army and seeing where they started and then where they got to after watching this exact speech on one rainey wednesday night and a week later going on a comp in the freezing cold, made you realize that little things can mean the most and shape and change someone forever.

I play this in the morning while I’m making breakfast. My 7 year old absolutely loves it. During quarantine I got in a bit of a funk & came out to the kitchen where my sweet boy had everything needed for pancakes laid out with this encouraging speech playing on the tv. He said “We are NOT sugar cookies! Let’s do this together!” I burst into tears. Pulled up my big girl pants & took a lesson from my child. We don’t give up just because things look different. ❤️

I worked with the Admiral on some real technical items when I was stationed in DC. He was easily the most intelligent, thoughtful, understanding, competent, and professional leader. I would work with 15 Admirals at a time, and without even opening his mouth he was by far the shining star. I would go to combat anytime, anywhere, and lay my life down for him. Unfortunately, we have no senior military officers like him and never will again.

My father was a sergeant in the US Army before I was born. One of the things he taught me when I was very young was to make my bed. "Yesterday was the easy day." This is one of my favorite speeches of all time. This man gives the facts in a creative way. Being prior military, I can confirm just how true the advice is. In my opinion, there is one that stands head and shoulders above the rest. " If you want to make it through life, find people who will help you paddle." You cannot go through life without help. And if you are either very lucky or proactive in finding good men and women to be your crew, you will find people who will do more than just help you paddle. The one that I have chosen very recently to take especially to heart is, "You must be your very best in the darkest moments." I have always followed. Leading seemed something beyond me. But several people, service members included, would tell me, "You know, you'd make a hell of a leader if you tried to be." And at this time, I think the only thing I now lack, is that darkest moment to test me. To all service men and women, thank you for your service.

I have no words to actually thanks Admiral McRaven for these speech. Neither I can describe how much he transform my life, because these video came to me in a "hell of a week". Five years ago, Puerto Rico was hit by "Hurricane María". My life as I knew it was shattered and I felt deeply in pain and lost. But somehow his speech inspired me to moved forward by taking care of others, in a way I never experienced before. Afterwards, I had heard this speech over 20 times and I had shared it twice as much. Last week, Hurricane #Fiona hits us in a way I didn't expected. Like a "mantra" I repeated to myself, "you must be calm, you must be composed". Every minute of last weekend, felted awful and disorienting, but I remembered McRaven's voice..."you must be calm, you must be composed", words that helped me to be focused and aware of my inner self. Right know, I don’t really know what's next. But I do know that " I need to be calm and composed". I also know, that it's time to summons all my strength, abilities and knowledge to swim through these "sharks" or be ready to "punch them in their snouts", metaphorically speaking. I honestly believe that McRavens experiences, change my mindset and world through all these years. I respectfully salute the Admiral and I'm thankful for his service. Blessings 🙌

This is the sort of video that I would go back and watch when I need a spiritual pick-me-up. I've watched this video twice and both times the ten lessons he refers to speak to me in a way that feels personal. It's difficult to pick a favorite lesson talked about in this video since every lesson spoken about is so profoundly inspiring, but if I had to I would choose lesson number nine; "If you want to change the world, start singing when you are up to your neck in mud." The reason I chose lesson number nine as my favorite is because I resonate so much with trying to find hope in the most trying of times. This is probably the most inspirational speech, in my opinion. Before every semester in nursing school or when times got tough in school, I go here and listen to his speech. I graduated nursing school this past May with Cum Laude honors and passed the NCLEX on the first attempt. Now I am getting ready to commission into the U.S. Air Force as a second lieutenant. A friend of mine is a high school teacher. He has a special role. He is given all the problem kids... .... this video is the first thing he shows them. I proud to say that I was the man who introduced him to this clip. At the age of 61 I still come back and watch this video to get myself back on track. This is leadership... I don't know this man... but he is my leader.

I heard this speech when I was a kid & this speech runs through my mind every time I wake up & leave for work in the morning!

I love this speech and must have watched it 100+ times, and bought and listened to the audio book multiple times. My Dad (Air Force) raised me and I followed in his footsteps. I remember Dad telling me before I left for basic training to remember it was just a mind game, to play the game and follow orders, boy was he right! The only thing I wasn’t prepared for was being homesick.

Will always come back to this speech whenever i feel down, and it really puts my head up... cant get tired of watching this speech over and over again!.

I watched this video for the first time about 4 years ago (right when I joined the Navy). I took the advice from him and realized just because everyone else is miserable, doesn’t mean everyone else has to be that too. So I said to myself, if I can change the lives of my sailors these days (now an E5), they can carry that on. Then those sailors carry that on, and eventually… those 17 sailors I changed the lives of, have changed 500+ from the issues I had to go through coming up. I come to this speech at least once a year, just to remind me the goal. One love y’all

Been almost a year and I came here almost on an impulse. My coc above me is terrible, but I’m not gonna let these sailors down.

This speech as well as the book based on it, written by Admiral William H. McRaven were made to come back, see it and read it over and over again. It´s really inspiring for those moments and times when we feel down and seems that the world is against you. The Admiral McRaven is a one-of-a-kind man.

What an awesome speech! I don't know HOW Navy Seals survive their training! Much respect for him.

My dad is a retired three-star. McCraven spoke at his retirement and I've had the honor of hanging out with him at a few dinners. He's an amazing guy. Down to earth and well-spoken. His son is a Ph.D. in Physics.
