    Dear friends and followers, welcome back to my channel!

    On the 20th of February 2021, a United Boeing 777-200, registration N772UA performing flight UA-328 from Denver,CO to Honolulu,HI (USA) with 231 passengers and 10 crew, was in the initial climb out of Denver's runway 25 when the right hand engine's (PW4077) inlet separated associated with the failure of the engine. The crew declared Mayday reporting an engine failure. The aircraft stopped the climb at about 13000 feet, the crew requested to return to Denver after running the checklists. ATC offered any runway, they would make it happen. The aircraft returned to Denver for a safe landing on runway 26 about 23 minutes after departure. The aircraft stopped on the runway for a check by emergency services. Emergency services advised of an active fire within the right hand engine and extinguished the fire a few minutes later. The aircraft was subsequently towed off the runway to a remote parking stand, where passengers disembarked and were bussed to the terminal. There were no injuries.

    The engine inlet fell into the neighbourhood of Broomfield,CO, located about 16nm west of Denver near 13th and Elmwood Street, the debris also struck through the roof of an adjacent house.

    Broomfield police reported that although debris impacted the neighbourhood and damaged a number of homes, there were no injuries on the ground. The debris field expands over a nautical mile.

    Ground observers reported hearing the sound of an explosion like bang, smoke and saw the debris falling down. The aircraft continued flying.

    Watch the video to learn more about what happened!

I am curious about something that was said... When talking about the engines near the start of the video, it was referred to as the Right Engine, then followed by "commonly referred to as engine 2..." In my 16 years in aviation, I have never heard any twin engine aircraft have its engines referred to by number, only ever left and right. Is this a training thing? A US V the rest of the world terminology? Yes, of course, 3 and 4 engine aircraft I have heard, and referred to engines by number, but never a twin.

Vor 12 Tage

@ZK-APA Your answer sort of contradicts its self, but OK. If that is deemed to be common. I have just never been taught in training, CRM or anything else in my airline career to refer to twin engine aircraft by engine number, only 4 engine aircraft. But thanks for the input.

Calling engines by engine no, even in a twinjet is quite standard. Even in official documents the engines are referred as eng 1 and eng 2.

Hi, Joe. Greate comments! What about the overweight upon landing? As the engine 2 shutted down, they don't have the reverse power on the left and they are as heavy as possible since it was right after take off. 1- If you can safelly stop a plane that heavy with only one reverse, why people dump fuel in minor emergencies? 2- Shouldn't they dump fuel to prevent fire after landing? Thanks!

Very good explanation , I think it’s valuable for the non pilots that the take off performance calculations always assume a engine failure,fire or severe damage after V1 ( decision speed) they must be able to accelerate with only 1 engine to V r ( rotation speed ) lift of , retract the landing gear and accelerate further to V 2 and so on . I think that will give the non pilot passengers even more confident . I like to mention that the fuel supply switches operate a valve in the FCU ,MEC,( normal ops. on engine start and shutdown), fuel control unit on the engine ) the FIRE switch operates a fuel valve , hydraulic valve , bleed valve and electric contacts situated in the engine pylon ! In case something is ruptured on the engine . I think the fire was later do too metal chafing , titanium remaining fan blades on the stator behind the fan . Can you explain how the pilot monitoring get the confirmation from the pilot flying , in order not to operate the wrong switch or lever ?

@Xander Thank you for explanation!

1: The plane still had hydraulic power... so it had conventional braking. Even if it didn't, these big jets have emergency accumulators that will give a set amount of brake applications even when hydraulics are out. 2: Thrust reverser was absolutely no used on the bad engine. Unsure what United's policy on asymmetric thrust reverser use is, but the good engine was most likely either kept in forward idle or reverse idle on rollout. 3: In small prop aircraft (like trainers), turning into/towards the bad engine can lead to some mild control issues. Not really a player too much for bigger aircraft (though the pilots must of course use some rudder to compensate for the lack of thrust on the right side of the plane).

Apparently one of these planes is capable of flying up to 5.5 hours one 1 engine. However this is supposed to only be done in case of severe emergency.

Is it ever the case you can't "secure" the engine, e.g. you hit both fire extinguishers and it keeps burning? What happens then? Skip the checklists and get the thing on the ground before the wing burns up?

Vor 3 Monate
Xander

yes... if a fire continues to burn after the agent is discharged you have the rest of your life to figure it out. Most likely... get it to the closest piece of concrete as quickly as possible (most likely without checklists)
