Except from that BIG MISTSKE you mentioned above, you didn't even show a head to head shot of r5 and a1 in terms of details! Also lens sharpness has a major role in detail comparison, again using an old zoom lens by Sony which in term of sharpness is nothing comparable to recent lenses from all manufacturers including Sony itself! Why not using prime lenses? And final note; you skipped talking about Sony A1's awesome flash sync speed of 1/400s at 2:42 jumping from a7r4 to pixel-shift term and then showing the pixel-shift result of A1! I'm not going hard on you Tony but just mentioned these to tell you we understand that! But I'm OK with your recent take on Sony's products as remind me of your past attitude to canon products like original R which lead them to make this big leap to the r5....so yes keep going to get harsh on Sony to push them to get better and better! Thank you

@cogmission Have you used an R5? The rolling shutter is really no big deal and isn't 'horrendous' as you claim. I shoot BIF mainly and rarely encounter it and can shoot 20fps full raw with no problem. I have to pan really quickly against a background containing lots of vertical uprights to induce it.

Vor Monat

Tony, why do you keep saying, "The A1 is a high speed camera and gives you both high resolution AND high speed...", (paraphrased slightly) - and THEN saying at the end that the Canon R5 won when clearly it can't compete speedwise (...and it has h'orrendous rolling shutter)? This is the second time? (Beyond the fact that you left out the REST of the advantages to the A1 over the R5)! Highly annoying... (and erroneous that your conclusion would be summarized as a win for R5, when it can't even compete in the same league when looking at the entirety of its offerings). The Alpha 1 was the ONLY camera that could give you a clean image in that room, yet you say the R5 didn't do that bad? The A1 also preserved more of the highlights, and the shadow test fractional and you (of course) gave it to the R5? Z5 comparison was with totally incompatible ISOs! This is getting ridiculous? Then you say R5 was best all around? Laughable? --- Tony: "The Alpha 1 gives you all the megapixels AND gives you the high speed." The comparison should have just ended with that. It was over at that point because the R5 (and all the others cannot do that, and probably not for a few years!) - The other 14 minutes are a waste... Especially with the false conclusion at the end! __ Also, there are some problems with your test procedures, but nobody's perfect. But anyway, sad to see you have it out for Sony to this degree... What did they do to you? (It appears Tony isn't a PPA member? Why is it advocated?)

Hi You are both great to watch, very informative. I have a question about the Sony a7r4 and capture 1, the answer of which I can't find on the internet. I did a shoot with the a7r4 tethered to a laptop and Capture 1. When I went to look at the images there were 3 of each, but with 3 consecutive numbers. What have I done to get this, I now have triple the data I needed? Thanks for your answer.

So is it really true that the r6 has better low light capabilities than the r5? If so is it just bc of the lower megapixels? I've heard both that it is and it's the same.

The bottom line is this; If I'm invested in a Manufacturers Eco System (Lenses, Flashes, Studio, etc.), you simply can't jump to another just because they have leap frogged your platform with new technology or capability unless you are very wealthy. Being a Nikon shooter with DSLR and lots of glass, I'm not going to abandon all that for the R5 because it does 8-stops of IBIS. For many years, Canon folks abandoned their sensor to jump on the Nikon 8xx series sensors; are they now jumping back to Canon for the R5? That's insane. You simply have to wait for your platform to catch up on functionality.

I have a somewhat unrelated question: Fujifilm just came out with a GFX 100S. This has twice as many megapixels as their GFX 50S, but on the same size sensor. Sure, some cameras are better than others, specially if we give up taking photos and let the cameras do all the work (and thus taking away all the fun). In my case, the main problem is usually me (the one behind the camera) and not the gear. I really have to practice more :-)

I am so pleased to see that several manufacturers are fielding high quality sensors with such high pixel density. My background tends to emphasize that bigger pixels mean more photons and hence a cleaner signal. However your results show how much can be done with the standard format size. I am a bit concerned about your dynamic range and ISO tests, for all of the cameras. The limitation seemed to be a colored uniform haze rather than noise. In particular the colored "200" marking was so much more obscured than the adjacent white ones. This to me strongly hints of flare in the lens or camera body rather than problems with the sensors. I can suggest two tests for flare. First, your brilliant high-tone backlighting would give even the most expensive prime a hard time. So, try a low-tone background and see if there is an improvement. I would also suggest using prime lenses for these tests anyway. These comments are meant to help, not criticize. Thanks for doing all this careful work!

@planetfun85 I've been considering giving away all my Canon gear to family members and switching to Sony. I've watched several reviews on the Canon R5, many with mixed results. But that's pretty much all cameras. I currently have a 70D, lots of batteries, accessories, a mixture of aps-c and full frame lenses. After this review, I realized I can live with the few compromises the R5 has. I was actually interested in the A7R IV. I don't do sports or flying birds stuff, so the A 1 doesn't hold much interest for me. For low budget feature movie work, the R5 is usable even with potential overheating issues. I already have a pretty good sound recording setup and when needed I usually hire someone with their own kit. Plan B, go for a Canon 90D and a BMD Pocket Cinema 6K which allows me to use all my current lenses, accessories and batteries for a similar price to the R5. But I'm ready to move up to full frame for photography, so that's a distant plan b.

Found this comparison really useful as I was lusting after the Sony A7riv, but the Nikon Z7ii looks like it'd suit my workflow quite well (never thought i'd say that!). Such a great time for cameras, but not for my wallet! I've been researching Topaz Gigapixel AI and wonder if you could use that software to upscale an image from something like an A9ii/A7iii to see if that can compete with any of these high megapixel bodies in a blind test? Imagine shooting and storing everything at 24mp and using Gigapixel to upscale it if you want to print a larger image!

@cogmission I would buy the A1 today, if I had the money, but you try really hard to misunderstand everyone, so it really makes no sense to argue with you.

Vor Monat
cogmission
cogmission

@max sr Calling it a heat sink is reductionist, there are also composite materials expressly created to minimize the transference as well as other design elements comprising a sophisticated heat dissipation system. To pretend as if your “explanations“ aren’t aimed toward the furtherance of an argument against the A1 is full of guile and deceitful. And doesn’t fool anyone. Good day to you too!

Vor Monat
max sr
max sr

@cogmission a black metal surface in direct sunlight will definitely be hotter than any processor's working temperature. And Sony states that there is a heatsink to cool the internal components and teardowns have shown that there is none in the Canon. You don't need to know the exact way it is designed to understand how a heatsink works. It's just an explanation, why in some circumstances the A1 or A7SIII can overheat faster than the R5, so there is no reason to question any reviewer's objectivity. And I agree that you can't rely on the R5 for video recording. But it looks like you aren't really interested in explanations anyway, so I won't bother anymore. Have a nice day.

Vor Monat
cogmission
cogmission

@max sr That’s all well and good but the heat exerted onto the body of the camera will never be as hot as the internal processors, so I think your theory is questionable since the heat is most likely primarily unidirectional. Also, you aren’t privy to the exact design criteria associated with Sony’s chassis, so your simplified speculative insight into its components is likely to be limited. The A1 has two cpus, not just one - and so not only are you likely underestimating the amount of heat built up internally, but also the design sophistication involved in even proposing cooling that design with a passive system. There’s a lot of conjecture one could postulate about either camera. Your thoughts are interesting to consider, but I don’t put an overdue amount of weight on them contrasted with actual experiments involving things we know. Fact: The A1 lasts a good amount of time in an oven at 104deg. It achieves this as a result of its original design without corrective firmware updates, and so is likely the product of a superior engineering staff and design criteria. The R5 was released with overheating issues which still persist to some degree when used under normal conditions! One is reliable and can be used in a professional context for video recording, the other is not.

Vor Monat
max sr
max sr

@cogmission the Sony cameras have a heatsink that connects the internals of the camera to the body. That's good when the temperature on the outside is lower than on the inside and helps them to cool down faster. But heatsinks work both ways. So if you heat up the body of the camera from the outside (e.g. by putting it in direct Florida sun) it will transport the heat to the sensor and processor. That will cause the camera to overheat faster. The R5 doesn't have a heatsink, so it lasts longer when you put it in the sun, but it will take ages to cool down once it overheats. So if you're shooting in an oven @40°C the Sonys will still be able to get the heat out, but if you heat their body up to 80+°C, they will struggle. The Canon's processor and sensor are isolated, so it will always record for a similar amount of time, regardless of the outside temperature. So the A1 overheating in the Florida sun, but not in an oven makes sence. As does the R5 lasting a little bit longer in the sun. It's physics.

Love your videos. This is my first time putting a comment up on your site. First off, man the people up here give you no slack . You have a tough audience. You left one camera out and I know why. No one takes this camera seriously because of it's terrible auto focus, but this video is for image quality. Take out the auto focus and the Panasonic S1R would be right there. That issue you have with pixel shift, the S1R does it in camera so you know what you get before you get to lightroom. On image stabilization the S1 and S1R are better that the other cameras. That flicker you see when LED light are present, yeah Panasonic S1R handles that too. Panasonic full frame cameras are an auto focus fix away from knocking Nikon to 3rd place and having Sony and Canon looking over their shoulders.

How can you rely on this casual test? Its critical each camera is profiled respectively. Just using Adobe's profile skews the images. Adobe has always leaned to profile Canon colors better than Nikon and Sony. But, just importing OOC jpegs into LR is not proper to compare each camera's output. Adjust each individually to their best, then compare.

Look at the color difference between teh Sony and the Canon, and this is the SECOND time I see videos made comparing Sony using a green or yellow heavy image to present its strong point..except here, and could be just the video, but I see the Sony color being rather muddy in the detail and color with some fluorescent tinge. Happy to see the Canon get good sharpness, as the AA filter in the past has been their weak point as they soften the images. 5DSR shows us how much sharper a 50mp can be vs the AA version, and its important for macro product work.

Vor Monat
Phil Indeblanc
Phil Indeblanc

BTW, the multi shot looks more so a stacking of images to process and create a sharpness based on the multiple images. If you look at the 2 samples, the info IS there, it is just not well defined. If the info does not resolve, you cannot simply take more frames of it to resolve it. You have some data and that data is being processed to have a more accurate way it applies sharpening, perhaps with internal use of different ISO sensitivity. Add having these overlaps helps create a upresolution more accurate larger file size image

Seems like they're all pretty great. It's a little disppointing that the Nikon IBIS isn't that great and they have the most banding too. TBH, the banding ruins the shadows in my view. I'd rather lose a little bit of DR and have no banding than gain a tiny it bit extra and have to deal with that. I'm a Nikon D750 owner right now, but judging by this, I have to reluctantly admit that the Canon is the best all rounder and probably justifies the higher price over the Nikon. The A1 looks great too, but the price is a bit out of reach for me!

just goes to show how good they all are , so pick which one you like . or lenses . as a Canon fan boy lol I am happy that the R5 stood as an equal to Sony and Nikon and with the banding issue I class the R5 the winner as you didnt have to spend time getting the settings right :)

Yes. Less pixel density means the pixels are bigger in the z6ii and are able to absorb more light = better low light performance
