One of the most haunting and beautifully iconic songs ever made...

This song makes me sad, happy, want to cry and smile, all at the same time. I can feel every note and hang to every word.

I've always thought this song has one of the best executed slow builds to a climax. The vocal performance and all the instruments too - it all just comes together perfectly.

In the Air Tonight and Bohemian Rhapsody are two other songs with excellent slow builds. Also Stairway to Heaven.

I'm not a huge U2 fan, don't usually like love songs/ballads, but the guitar in this song is one of my all time favorite sounds in all of music.

Hi. Sorry to hear about your dad. I have a similar story. My husband loved U2 and got me hooked to this song. 3 years ago he took his life as well. Every time I hear this song it reminds me of him. I wish he was here to see his two sons grow up.

In 1987 when this song came out, U2 was the biggest band in the world by far. And in the summer of 1987, I was getting ready to leave for Seville, Spain to study abroad for a year. My girlfriend and I broke up. I kept telling myself I could make it with or without her. This song gave me strength actually. It was sad that summer, but also fun. And when I got to Spain, it seemed like a fairytale book was opening up for me. It was a truly incredible year in Spain 🇪🇸.

Played this at my girlfriends funeral back in 1990, she was 17. Killled by a speeding driver whilst riding her horse, horse died too. He was cremated and put in her grave with her. Was due to marry her as soon as I left the army, still brings tears to my eyes today!! God bless you Val, I will always love you darling!! 😥

@Tomsbananacakes it was devastating at the time as I'd only been in the army for just over a year when Val got killed. This was when I decided to focus all my attention on my military career until a roadside bomb ended it for me in Iraq 2000. After medical discharge I married a female medic that saved my life. I was with her for 14 years but it ended because I couldn't father children due to my injuries. I'm now 50 years old and found my soul mate in 2020, an old school friend, the best thing being I hated her at school. All this but I still think of Val and visit her grave regularly, my partner supports this and comes with me to the cemetary. Life is good, thanks for your concern!! 🙂
