For those confused about how a democrat-dominated House would still elect a republican president the reason is in the fine print of the Constitution: First, for the election of the president to go to the House no candidate must have received 50% plus 1 of the Electoral College vote. (270 as it stands today) Second, in the House each state delegation gets one vote. That means even though California has far more representatives than Wyoming they still only get one vote. Even though California has 53 representatives (most of them democrat) their vote would only count as much as the single representative from Wyoming. (republican) Because there are more republican-dominated state representations by number this could hypothetically allow the election of a republican president even in an otherwise democrat dominated House. Unfortunately to amend the Constitution requires 2/3 of Congress and then 3/4 of state legislatures to ratify and neither party seems eager to change this really archaic and undemocratic part of the Constitution.
