Remember that your dog is a dog, he doesn't come prewired to know "not to pull on leash". A dog is restrained ALL day, confined to a house or yard, finally when the dog is outside, they get excited! Be patient, don't expect perfection right away, use humane training tools that can make your life easier and reward good behaviour. Loose leash walking isn't a difficult behaviour to teach, it's difficult for owners because it takes time to train.

I have a 9 year old dog... He pulls and pulls and I have been trying for about two years now to work with him and have not gotten any progress. When he is let off leash, he stays in the yard but he sniffs out shit and rolls in it. If he isn't rolling it then he is eating it. He eats every kind if shit but his own. We have an elderly dog and the younger dog likes to eat his crap too! I've looked up how to stop this and I dont have the time to spend an hour putting hotsauce on every turd I see or find. Please helpp!!!!!! How do I get my dog to stop eating literal shit?!

Hello! Can i use the head harness on my toy poodle ? My toy poodle is a strong puller. We are great walking on collar leash at home. But once i take him outside (1 meter from house) he will starts pulling, jumping and just go crazy. I tried the stopping and ignores him. But it doesnt work. He will keep on pulling till he got tired and he will sit and i will walk one step and he will pulls again like crazy!

My three.....no leashes. Long walks in forested areas, no leashes. Need them close, two finger snaps, a whistle (lips) or a simple "come" command. On occasions where a leash is required two are perfect, one...a border collie....will pull but stops on command. No "heel". For us it's "Walk nice". The border will walk herself on a leash and just stay next to me or slightly ahead. She grabs the leash in her mouth and is good as gold. I got lucky, these are great dogs. We live in a wooded setting on a dead end gravel lane. I can let them out and they stay on the property.....they learned that by being walked along the tree line during their formative periods. "Patrol" means to walk the tree line. "Go see" means to enter the woods to keep predators back. I have chickens that need protection. "GO!" means something is out there and I need it gone. Great video here! My daughter has a sweet pitbull that is always pulling. I've never had a dog like this, she makes walks unpleasant. This girl we figure came from a rough background. Her ears were clipped very poorly, like with scissors. Looks to have been used to breed too. She can be very skittish but never, ever aggressive. Her natural instincts to sniff and explore are very strong, thus the pulling. She can be a great dog with a little guidance, but I never had this problem so am not sure how to fix the issue. Thanks for the video....I'll get back and let you know how it's going.

So my pup phoebe has always been a backyard dog and got plenty of exercise but those past year we lived in an apartment. She gets to walk on a leash for about ten minutes before we go to the park and she just goes potty sometimes we play fetch but then she wants to leave. I’ve tried the front clip. It doesn’t stop it, it just pulls the harness to the side making her walk funny on one side, Treats? Doesn’t have any interest at all she won’t even look at me and she loves her treats. Tried the stop when they pull but she either never lets the leash go slack or just goes right back to pulling as soon as we go, I’ve tried everything except the head harness and I’m afraid of her lunging after one of the many cats roaming around and hurt her neck. I don’t know what to do. 😢

@Kristin Crestejo thanks for your answer :) but what if it doesn't loosen? He keeps sniffing left and right still on tight leash and after 30 sec or a minute he realises I m still there and he walks back a bit so we can walk forward. Shouldn't I interrupt his happy sniffing when on tight leash? Thank you

Vor 6 Monate

As long as the leash is being loosened when the dog moves, you can mark and continue moving. The release of the pressure is the cue for the dog to keep moving. This takes time to train, so be patient. I hope I understood your question correctly. Good luck :)

@Kristin Crestejo Thank you for the help! i have a new harness that should be delivered soon and so i can start working with him with that too. I will definitely start doing what you said, whenever i tell him to "back up" he will but once he gets the "yes!" as a marker for doing something good he just goes hyper focus on anything and everything that isnt me. Thank you so much! I really hope this works

Vor 6 Monate
Kristin Crestejo

Ah , so what you've got yourself into is a pattern behaviour, because you've added an extra few cues accidently. Restart when the dog pulls, give a warning such as "easy" or "don't pull". If the dog eases off the leash and turns around, mark the dog with a "good boy!" and continue walking. DON'T GIVE TREATS every time at this stage. So dog pulls - give verbal warning - if dog doesn't stop pulling, we stop, wait until leash pressure comes off and mark with good boy - continue walking. If he's staring at you like "give me treats" ignore him, he'll do his thing. Consistency with this. Good luck..

It takes time to train. Work the steps in the video of stopping and rewarding. It doesn't work to just stick it on and hope that it's a quick fix. Reward for the dog relieving the pressure. Good luck! Let me know if you have any other questions here.

Vor 6 Monate

Yes, in the beginning the dog doesn't "get it", you literally need to wait him out. But often what we see is the human attempting to wait the dog out, but the dog wins. So if we waited 5 minutes then caved in, the dog was now taught to wait longer and you'll listen to him. Consistency is THE KEY to training. Always think of it like a battle of wills, haha. The species with the stronger will to win, will persevere. Each time will be shorter and shorter, I swear! It's just the first week that is soooooo hard.

My dog is NOT treat motivated! Even in the calm of home, sometimes he just looks at even his favorite treat. Would. Someone. Please. Help! He's a rescue that was a stray for a year and a half & it's my first time training. When I finally got into classes, they did not help. (I tried to get started in classes right away, but finally had to settle for PetSmart ☹️)

Vor 6 Monate

@Kristin Crestejo Thank you for the reply 👍 I have tried all kinds of food (the PetSmart lady was hungry looking at all the types of food I brought him, lol). I have made a slight bit of headway, but like our walk today he was jumping around when he saw a dog (only 2 dogs). He's starting to have a little less tension on the leash, but I had to yell at him in his face to stop (not my normal diminer with him). No treat reaches him outside at all; it could literally be a steak... And if I'm already walking him (the only reward he likes), how can I train him off this? Sorry so long a text & thank you 😊

Vor 6 Monate
Kristin Crestejo
Kristin Crestejo

Have you used cooked chicken? Pepperoni? Some dogs just don't really care for food and that's okay! It just makes it a bit more difficult for the owner to figure out a reinforcement that can work. All dogs have reinforcements that drive them, you're going to have to watch and figure out what your dog wants. Is it to walk? Moving forward? Is it playing? Is it being pet? Use whatever your dog likes as the reward. And don't worry about clickers if your'e worried it's going to goto hell, lol. Use your voice and say "YES". The precision takes practice.

Vor 6 Monate

Also, I want to try the clicker, but he's so fast. I'm scared I'm going to reinforce bad behavior because the good behavior lasts a millisecond....

Is your dog getting enough off leash time? It sounds like it's really pent up and revving to go. GSD's often need 2-4 hours of mental and physical stimulation per day. And if you're only trying to WALK part of that then it's going to be difficult to train because of the pent up energy. I would recommend working some tug games indoors or if you have a backyard, throwing a ball or tug games to help wind the dog down a bit, then attempting walks. You must think of training to walk a dog, as TRAINING, not a walk, until your dog CAN walk semi decently on the leash. Good luck!

KRISTIN. THIS WAS AN EXCELLENT TRAINING VIDEO!!!!!!!!!!!!😊 One of the reasons it’s so good is the way you explain the DOGS NEEDS ALSO!!!!! This is what I find MOST PEOPLE DONT’T GET OR Just Don’t care I use to train Dogs and Horses with THE CLICKER. FANTASTIC WAY!!!! It really helps with helping the animal to ‘Get it’. A great tool. And you know you can do a ‘Verbal’ click with your mouth if you don’t have one or forget one. Which worked great with my horse. I would ‘Click’ and my horse would come running to me as she knew with the clicker she got a reward! A great training tool. And your gift for training is a God send. These animals are from our Great Lord. And we all will be held accountable for how we treat them!😊🙏✝️

Vor 7 Monate
Kristin Crestejo
Kristin Crestejo

Does your dog become over stimulated with lights? This will make training a bit more difficult for you because you'll need to train multiple behaviours at once. For the lights, bring a treat or toy that the dog LOVES, not likes. Train a leave it cue (you can find this on my channel). When your dog focuses on the car lights, give the cue leave it. If you've trained this correctly he or she should look at you, mark the cue and give the reward. Start training at dusk, not quite dark so the visual stimulation is not so intense. At first you'll feel like youre rewarding the dog for looking at the lights, the rate of reinforcement will be quite high. But as the behaviour starts to become automatic (dog looking at the cars and looking at you) you can now verbally reward every time and only give toy or food reward every second, and so forth.

Agree with you that dogs do not have to be walking heel position with you all the time. It might work and might be fine for some dogs but not for all dogs. I especially want that walking for my dog and I be more or a pleasure and adventure for us both than feel like an army training. I want him to relax and enjoy the walk with me without giving in to his instinct of bounding off to freedom. But I also believe that basic to all this is the relationship you have with your dog. I live in the country and my Doberman never leaves my side and he is not leashed. The only reason why I would leash him is if ever I would have to go somewhere with him - which is usually nowhere because I hate dog parks, I hate parks, I hate other people who are not responsible enough for their own dogs' behavior. But I do would like for him to be comfortable when and if the need arises that he will have to be on a leash with me. Thank you for this vid. I agree with your perspectives!

BaBeast im 5’3 and working with a client with two great pyrenees that used to be a farm dogs walked on a retractable leash, now living in the suburbs. work on reinforcing the dog yielding to leash pressure in general, first in the house then in the yard then on walks. if the dog pulls hard to get to something on a walk sink down into a squat and lean back or even sit down if you need to. for really high drive dogs ive found the “stop” method just takes too long to the point where the dog isnt even getting exercise. an alternate technique is to walk in the opposite direction when the dog pulls, so that they dont get to continue to stare and focus on whatever is distracting them. in an open area ive found having them walk/run in circles around me until they give slack to the leash to be successful too. a head harness can also be useful, but my crazy stray rescue learned to tolerate the pressure on his snout so its not always a good option
