Seemingly a day for the breakaway, Stage 8 of the tour saw Mathieu van der Poel valiantly attempt to hold his yellow jersey ahead of Wout van Aert and a blistering Tadej Pogačar.
From the longest stage to the one of the shortest, Stage 8 will see the riders make their first foray into the mountains on a 151km-long route from Oyonnax to Le Grand-Bornand. The first two thirds of the stage are relatively tame, but once the riders pass through Bonneville at 57km to go they’ll stare down the triple threat of the Côte de Mont-Saxonnex (5.7km at 8.3%), Col de Romme (8.8km at 8.9%) and Col de la Colombière (7.5km at 8.5%). These are the first three Cat-1 climbs of the 2021 Tour and they fall in rapid succession, meaning any gaps created on the first will then be increasingly magnified on the latter two.

Since everyone's talking about Pogacar, i'll do it. Congrats to Dylan Teuns, the actual and deserved winner of this awesome stage.

Absolutely! Phenomenal performance.

@Simon Gale exactly

@Magnus Overgaard Schnipper also because the stage winner that is essentially his only day, mighty impressive but realistically he can not win the tour. Pogacar is gc hope he has 3weeks full on racing. Most single stage winners end up hour+ behing the overall winner. Essentially they are in slightly different races

@German Londoño Thankfully, they've changed the title now. When the video was released, it contained all the important information about the stage and GC results. I have no problem with the new title.

@Desert Rain Frog ITV4 in the UK has a one-hour highlight show. But I was responding to a comment that suggested that people should watch the race live to avoid getting spoilers.

"Putting in a performance that we haven't seen for quite some time in professional cycling" I think the commentator says it all there really
Vor yearJamie Smith
Up a 12% grade in the big ring while seated and pulling away from everyone. And now fanboys are making all of the same COMICAL rationalizations that they made when Lance did similar shit. The fact that cycling powerhouse Slovenia can magically produce the two best stage racers in the world at the same time out of a population the size of Houston TX should be a signal.
Vor yearCoco
@davidoffon Ya clean....right....never going to happen...spider skinny anorexic "men" eggbeating their way up a mountain...go back 35 or 40 years to see what real riders used to look like.
Vor yearCoco
@Catherine Taylor Yup and too many doped up riders as usual.
Vor yearLiam
@Aurora Boring Alice Lol I don’t even have a favourite. But if your favourite is beating Lance Armstrong on the climbs, you’ve got to ask yourself some questions. Or you think a natty rider can beat a juicy Armstrong?
Vor yearCatherine Taylor
@hannahtatou I do still love it - saw the final of the TDF live in Paris in 2016. Sad because I cannot be sure of the results. If they are 'clean' - amazing - if not, I feel for those that are, and have no chance
Vor yearMark S
Pogacar was awesome today climbing on the big ring in some parts. Reminded me a bit of the 2018 Giro with Froome blowing up the Giro on that unbelievable stage.
Vor yearPaolo Gardinali
Yes, then they arrested Freeman, Sky’s doctor doping, and now it feels like they are all riding beach cruisers
Vor yearMax Meessen
With the camera angle from above and behind, and Pogacar overtaking all the climbers from the breakaway, this looked like a cycling computer game on "easy" mode. All the way while looking more relaxed than me on my morning commute.
Vor yearvegn_brit
@Paolo Gardinali Never knew of the link with Riccò. Mauro Gianetti and Joxean Matxin who are the team managers at Uae Emirates were both involved in the doping scandal at Saunier-Duvalnelle involving Riccò. Ouch. I have been watching cycling since the days of Indurain and have seen all the big dopers like Armstrong, Ulrich, Pantani, etc. and throughout the years I don't think I have seen such a display of dominance as I am seeing now. Let's not forget Pogačar dominated the TT as well.
Vor yearkosm81
@Tow Hee so you are saying that Pogacar is doping with some supernatural juice? Ok, lets put some logic into it: They are giving some next-gen juice to a rider from Slovenia which has 2 million people and sell maybe 100 Colnago bikes per year. Why would someone prefer a rider from 2 million market and not riders from Italy, France, Germany, Britain ect. where they sell bikes in tens of thousands.🎭 Basically, a lot of people from bigger countries have a "problem" with riders from smaller countries like Slovenia, Columbia, Ecuador, ect. A lot of funny people here , who have not achieved nothing in their lives so far.
Vor yearsandydenny lives
@Paolo Gardinali I know the col de Colombiere and he raced up the harder side. I've never seen a pro do that on a 53 chain ring, ever.
Vor yearPaolo Gardinali
I don’t know, @sandydenny lives … in the post Armstrong era it appears more remunerative to do things discreetly and avoid other major scandals
Vor yearArno
The crash on the 2nd or 3rd stage destroyed Roglic. He's the only one who could be a threat to Pogacar. Even though less good, on TT he's miles better than anyone other than Pogacar and about equal to Wout Van Aert, and he has a strong team. So he would have been a danger.
Vor yearTungsten Kid
If Thomas, Roglic and Froome are still feeling bruised after their crashes, perhaps they should abandon so they can recuperate in time for the Vuelta, assuming they'll be riding that?
Vor yearMylo Skeng
Geraint also had issues after the crash, so it seems these crashes have really hindered the tour this year
Vor yearchevyrydah04
You’re right. The after effects of that crash are showing.
Vor yearBroccoli Wobbles
I can't even enjoy performances like this without being a bit suspicious even if the suspicions I have are really low. Lance's scandal had such a magnitude that people's assumptions today are 'guilty until proven innocent' instead of the other way around. Pog's a beast but the performance on this stage was just domination.
Vor yearXplora213
@Don Greek PEDs have killed a lot of cyclists. The discussions about fairness and realism of performance matter. Ultimately, we would be better served if they just said Pro Cyclists are the F1 of sport and they take it all. No illusions. Strongman and power lifting don’t test. Neither does arm wrestling. Abuse of gear is part of those sports. Sadly, they also die but what can you do? I want to see much shorter stages and normal human performance. Sadly, Le Tour is a freak show. End of story.
Vor yearDon Greek
While I understand your suspicion, I would like to remind you that even with no PED there will always be someone who is in better shape or is having a really great day or has prepared better or whose body is just handling the stress of an endurance event better. That was always the case the PED came into play for those who could not compete on the same level no matter what they did. Then it just got to be the way things were.Of course Lance took it to another level entirely by really organizing it in a very pro corporate way. He did what most were doing but better and much more aggressively. Of course having said all that I still keep a grain of salt nearby. Just in case I have to eat my words later. Although I still like Lance and watch his show here I had to eat a lot of words when the scandal came out. Wow those were a lot of words just to say I agree with you.

Vor yearEl Scruffo McScruffy
Armstrong cheated, but only because everyone was doping. There was pressure from sponsors to win at all costs. Whilst everyone was cheating, Armstrong merely perfected it. Still deservedly banished though.
Vor yearTanis Leach
@Xplora213 Lance did fail multiple tests. Himself and his team "justified" those tests by backdating fake prescriptions, or in one case (2002) paying the UCI to shut up. These are things found in multiple Armstrong documentaries.

Pogacar would`ve probably won the stage in dry condition. He had everything to lose and wouldn`t risk it on the wet downhill, Teuns had everything to win.
Vor yearArgal von Bregev
After watching the Tour for 20+ years... I can somewhat believe that someone can pull off such a race before a rest day and be able to compete again after a day of recovery. And even then, that climb, that was Lance Armstrong level superiority. Yes, I do understand that progress has probably been made in training methods, in understanding nutrition and all that, and Pogacar is only 22, that will help recovery a lot, but still, pretty much everyone in recent years who put in such an "unbelievable performance" had a bit of help, sometimes to the point where they put their own life in danger. We'll see, but I'm afraid if he can keep up this level of superiority in the mountains, few people will trust him. I watch it mostly for the individual races anyway, so if Pogacar leads by several minutes half way through the tour... good for him, I guess. I hope he won't have to sleep with an alarm strapped to a heart rate monitor so he doesn't die in his sleep like others had to do before him...

To say he is clean is like rolling in the mud and saying you are clean. The riders, UCI, ASO and every cycling body saying the sport is clean/cleaner. Then you have times being broken that you had during the everyone is on something Lance years. No chance the peleton is clean, Pogacar is just doing it better. Much like Lance did years ago. The only thing that I wonder is if he is smart and will either retire or not race the TDF for a few years. This of course after winning 3-4. Seeing if he doesn't then everyone is going to be looking for the needle in the haystack so to speak. With Lance it was the "saddle sore" medical that in reality started his downfall. True, buying equipment for testing and giving the sport money helps. Will Pogacar do it too? And will he be top 5 finishing tomorrow? You have to wonder how long until the team has him look like he cracks... even if it's not as bad as the Lance bonks and then rips the tour apart, from the sprinter section of the peleton (in the very back) to the stage win.

...Now...the tour starts..👊

What's he on? Hope it isn't illegal. Amazing handling in testing conditions.

It will be pogaçar victory until the end While MVDP will quit for upcoming Tokyo Olympics

Armstrong, Landis, Ullrich, Contador, Froome (?), Wiggings (?)... Can we really trust a Tour de France winner who crushes the oppositions nowadays?
Vor yearYanik G-Force
@mama mia Agreed.

Indurain?

havent watched TDF for some years man but wheres quintana , froome , porte, molema etc ???!?
Vor yearKden
I reckon he’s on that special sauce. He legit wasn’t even tired after such a monsters effort. Kinda reminds of of Armstrong
Vor yearDesert Rain Frog
@Kden Did you see him at the finish?
Vor yearKden
@Desert Rain Frog at what point did he show fatigue ? To me it looked like he effortlessly passed everyone at light speed
Vor yearDesert Rain Frog
@Jo Well after his TT he didn't appear tired, and today he did show fatigue. So unless he displays the same level of fatigue differently on different days, his TT looks a bit suspicious. But who knows, it's all speculation.
Vor yearJo
What is your give away that he was "not tired"? Different riders express their efforts differently on the outside. Best examples are probably Qunitana vs Almeida. The first always looks exactly the same and at some point just gets dropped, the later basically looks like he is just about to blow into pieces from the start of every climb.
Vor yearDesert Rain Frog
He was tired today when he crossed the line, that doesn't necessarily refute your claim though I suppose. He wasn't tired after his TT though.
Vor yearJa Man
100% on the juice, kinda reminds me of lance. everyone but one rider having to really struggle, and one rider has an easy stroll up the hill.

Pogacar será campeão, já era pros outros...
Vor yeartyson1ize
it began from the start well there's a novel idea?? hope it catches on lol
Vor yearTewerai Janda
Carapaz will win the tour.. Pogo did too much too early… but he took his chance he will be out the back soon maybe not today or tomorrow or the day after but soon. Never underestimate growing up at high altitude.
Vor yearDavid O Brien
First rider to win 10 Tours in a row? Hope not..
Vor yearMarko Podganjek
So why was difference so big? In one side differences were big between Pog and GC group. On other side he was saving strength entire week while others were running like crazy in one or other breakaway (best sample Carapaz in stage 7). And he also recuperate excellent with his 22 years. So now bill came for the others. He catch them literally on wrong foot attack and maximise difference. He rides excellent on records levels, while GC group was riding like beaten dogs All conditions are for repetition in stage 9.
Vor yearrobert philip
Damn, where's MVDP in the GC top 10?

Another wild day !

This was not a good performance from Pogacar! It just leaves a super bitter-sweet taste afterward. And again i don't say he dopes, he might be a superkid who has such power but i can understand the people who see several red flags in his performance. For me i would advise him just to keep cool for now, the tour is long why make such moves and everyone starts again with this bs talk over such a crazy performance. You have much more time to show your potential why in a way like that? this just sets a spotlight on our sport which is not good and brings bad media with it.

Tbh, all climbers are doped up. At least most of them. Froome, LA, Pog you name it. The only genuine rider I see these days is Peter Sagan.

@Jesse Härkönen that's why they don't like the UK.

serious question: how come everyone says to not cross chain, but I commonly see pro cyclists cross chain? e.g. 2:47 (big chain ring, big cog)... is there a reason for this?
Vor yearEto
@Jason Webb who cares what dopestrong said
Vor yearbeeble2003
@Desert Rain Frog Exactly. Having said that, if I'm going up a short hill that's a bit steeper than I expected, I'll stay in big-big to the top, rather than try to shift chainrings.
Vor yearJonathan Chester
@julmeissonnier that's bollocks unless you buy cheap parts from China.
Vor yearJonathan Chester
because it sounds like you are grinding coffee beans. It's just considered bad form, like tucking your shades under your helmet strap. All nonsense of course.
Vor yearEto
Excessive wear doesn't matter for pros. They can have a new chain and drivetrain every day if they want. It's not good to cross chain because of that, and the angle increases the risk of skipping a tooth as well as a bit more drag.
Vor yearL139 X
Seems like a stronger performance than Lance, 2003 - Luz Ardinen come back. Just saying. :(
