Dear friends and followers, welcome back to my channel!

Today’s video will all be about hard/bumpy landings. 15 reasons why pilots once in a while land a little harder than usual.
    Number 15:
    Autoland landing
Autolands can sometimes end up in a harder landing than usual. In very foggy conditions with visibility values lower than what is consider to be flown manually(RVR minimum), pilots have to choose an auto land landing if there plane is equipped and certified for such an approach. The autopilot flies purely by numbers and received signals from the ground which can lead to a shortened flare, ending in a bumpy landing. A mishap showing that the autopilot only flies by the received signals is the Singapore airlines (check) landing at Munich airport, where the pilot disconnected the autopilot too late after landing, and the signal got disturb by another plane, leading to the Triple 777 to swerve off the runway.

    Number 14:
    Varying landing weight
Your first landing might be close to the maximum landing weight and the next might be with a nearly empty plane. Planes act completely different depending on their landing weight, which might be misjudged by the pilot and ruining his flare!

    Number 13:
    Different plane types
Some airline pilots are rated on multiple planes. For example when I flew for Airberlin, I was rated on the Airbus A319, 320, 321 and some colleagues even flew the A330 all within one week. Sometimes you switched between different types of aircraft in one day. Each of them flare and obviously weigh differently and can be the cause for a bumpy landing.

    Number 12:
    Different engine types
Some airlines have an A320 as example with IAE V2500, but in the same fleet others are fitted with CFM Leap engines. Upon flare, the engines react or spool up and down differently, timely speaking, which can lead to an unexpected long flare, a sudden drop in airspeed and bang, your next hard landing.

    Number 11:
    Density Altitude
When landing in Los Angeles for example with a 747, let’s say you have a ground speed on approach of 150 knots, times 5 equals = 750 feet per minute of descent rate on a 3 degree glideslope. Let’s fly the approach with the same landing weight into Mexico City with an airport elevation of 7300 feet, the air density is much lower, therefore your True Airspeed increases by 2% per 1000 feet, means 7 times 2% equals 14%, so 150 knots times 1.14 equals 171 knots. Let’s say 170 knots times 5 equals 850 feet per minute your descending on the 3 degree glideslope. So effectively 100 feet per minute 20 knots faster, if you don’t anticipate the higher descent rate, bang, harder landing then usual. The same applies for glide slopes which are steeper than normal which result in a higher descent rate!
    .....
I hope you enjoy the video and it’s been helpful to you!

I have the highest of respect for any pilot flying any plane. They have a ton of responsibility for a huge amount of passengers, plane-, and ground crew, the plane itself and cargo on board. I don‘t mind a „bumpier“ or „hard“ landing, they brought me to my destination safely and that is everything that counts. „BuT piLots tHeSE daYs dON‘t fLY thE pLaNe aNyMorE, theY aLWayS uSe tHe auToPilot!“ I‘d like to see any person that says that to perform an, aparently sooo easy, auto-landing. They would even fail to set the autopilot up correctly!

But, I don't want to be the person who can prove to 'land' better. I just want to buy the tickets and get from one place to another without breaking my back in the process, minor details of course. There is a reason why a qualified pilot is in charge and not me. So that justification is not valid. The videos are more that enough to determine whether the landing was hard or not. I don't need a compression injury to figure that out.

Dear Joe I won't refrain commenting Ryanair... I had a 4 hours flight with them to canary islands... i flew with loads of different airlines in my life , i must tell on that occasion the flight attendants treated me like a king and whoever it was CPT or FFO greased the landing butter than better , sorry better than butter. This common hating about ryanair is nonsense... guys... you fly all over europe with them for 90p expecting to be in emirates first class with captain Sullenberger in the flight deck?

When I was a kid, we flew a few times to far away holiday destinations by plane. This may sound weird, but what most passengers describe as inconveniences or disturbances, I rather relished. Examples: 1: when we were returning from our holiday, the plane landed so brusquely that a large light fixture fell off the ceiling. I just thought it probably hadn't been affixed properly in the first place; 2: can't remember we had those annoying bouts of turbulance, where everything keeps vibrating and things fall from your folding table. The turbulances I can remember were: surrounded by dark clouds, lighting flashing aaah...; 3: one time, for a rather short trip, we could see our destination already shortly after taking off. However, the plane turned around and landed back on the airport we had just taken off from. Technical issue, one of the two engines had stopped working; Haven't flown much the past decade but a few years ago we flew to Turkey and what was so nice: instead of flying 'straight in,' the pilot flew over the bay in a wide turn to approach the runway from the sea side. You usually can't see the runway in such a spectacular way before landing. The only time I got a bit scared was when I was a kid and prior to landing, I could see nothing but sea sea sea around us. Then we were descending and I could see the waves clearly. We were clearly going to crashland in my view but at the very, very last moment, the plane touched down on the runway. The runway was so close to the sea and there was no beach to speak off, just a small road in front of the runway.

I've had a few hard landings and the only thing I think is "shit" lol then it's about TRUSTING the pilots. Next few minutes brakes and it's done. The only part I'm not keen on is take off TRUST, VERY powerful, but without it we're not flying anywhere.

I once was on a plane from Palma de Mallorca to Paderborn. In Paderborn it was such bad weather that you couldnt barely see the runway. Additionally to the rain it was really windy. Coming closer to the runway one could feel that the plane was shaking because of the wind. However the pilots did a great job managing to control the plane and align it perfectly with the runway. At estimated 10 meters above the ground (could‘ve been more or less idk I‘m Not a professional but it felt like a lot) the plane lost all of its uplift and we slammed on the ground really really hard. Some passangers have hit their head and there was nobody talking after that for half a minute. You could see the shock in the peoples faces.

Wait. You completely lost me, CJ. "Don't be that kind of passenger (who criticizes) unless you can prove you can do it better." Uh, wrong! We are paying YOU to be the professional. Using your logic, we should never criticize anyone who has taking training in a field that we ourselves have not. That's ludicrous. And telling us that we don't know what a hard landing is is downright insulting. Perhaps you wouldn't were it not for your training, but NEVER assume that any of the rest of us wouldn't. Don't be that kind of pilot, CJ. We absolutely have the right to criticize the flight crew even if we have never flown an aircraft. 🤦‍♂️
