I was on the USS Trepang(Sturgeon-class attack sub) in '83- we were in Roosevelt Roads for Easter weekend. The Tico was on her shakedown cruise- the USN's latest and greatest at the time. We were tied up at the finger pier next to hers. In between was a hulk with the words "Danger Target Ship" painted in 6 foot high letters on its side. The crew had just been thrown out of the base enlisted club after one of the chiefs mooned the place, and the CO bought a couple of kegs down to the pier- long story short, one of our JO'S grabbed a raft from the escape trunk, broke into a paint locker on the pier, enlisted two of the sonar techs, and got caught painting "Danger Target Ship" on the side of the Tico. IIRC, a picture got into the Navy Times.

I left the USN in 93. She was already old. I had found out that back in the mid 2010s that the Tico has been mothballed, as well as a few of her sisterships.

I'm currently still in, last I heard pretty much all the cruisers left are going to the reserves if not already.

This was a production vessel put together in Pasgagoula Mississippi at the Ingals Shipyard in the 1980's. I was stationed aboard the U.S.S.Comte De Grasse and we were going through our overhaul with the crew of the U.S.S.Iowa.

SPY is a phased array electronically steered radar. The stock footage you have of the spinning display is of a traditional radar system (probably on a carrier or older ship), not a spy system.

There are three type of vessels in the US Navy. You have subs, carriers, and targets. The Ticonderoga is a high tech target used to protect carriers.

I've always been more of a tank aircraft and infantry kind of guy but these videos have really increased my interest in ships.
