@Todd Douglas , I've had a cocker spaniel mix who was twenty-something pounds, and a purebred Cairn terrier also 25 pounds, but it's the big dogs that are dearest to my heart. We actually fostered and re-homed a 7 pound terrier recently, which required us to have eyes in the back of our heads so that the little guy, who had no fear, wouldn't get squashed when our two giant Anatolians play and rough-house!

@good 'un the tendency or even obsession for large dogs is infectious. All doggie types are good but we all have our proclivities and the larger doggo the better suits many. I made my comment due to the query in the video as to who wakes up daily thinking of getting a larger than life dog, and I raised my hand.

I think these dogs are so big and heavy that they spend more time just laying on the floor, they just really can be tired of simply standing on their feet. Not surprising at all that they are so calm😆

I used to see a bloke every morning walking three of these St Bernard dogs. They were honestly as big as he was. Placid animals, really nice.. I asked him one day where he takes them for their walks. And what he said made me laugh. He said... "They take me wherever they want to go"

When I grew up this one person in my neighborhood had a chihuahua and one St. Bernard. It would look so funny to see them out on walks because of the different sizes of the dogs. Apparently they were very well matched because they needed about the same amount of physical activity (she explained that even if the St. Bernard was a big dog, it needed calm walks due to its heart and a chihuahua is not a dog you take on intense long walks).

My university had three St Bernard therapy dogs that would come in during finals week—Bea, Bobo, and Boomer. They were such sweethearts, they’d all just flop down on the floor of the library and let a gaggle of students surround them for pets and cuddles. Boomer starting coming to campus as a puppy, and even as he got fully-grown he still tried to sit on people’s laps like he was still a little puppy 😂

I have always loved giant dogs. It's their big loving hearts that I just can't resist. Newfies are my favorite and my girlfriend loves Saints.

I've never seen such a well-behaved bison in my whole life. He was remarkably calm, even when you groomed his hooves.

I remember walking down the street while in college when I saw a woman approaching me walking what looked like a small buffalo! I had to ask her what kind of dog he was. He was part malamute, part mastiff, and part Rottweiler, so he had the double coat of the first, the size and muscularity of the second, and the black color of the third. He was the biggest dog I had ever seen until I encountered two Irish wolfhounds in Orkney, Scotland when on vacation.

As a large breed dog owner, I can confirm that I did indeed wake up one day and decide I wanted a horse in my house. As I described it to my family when they questioned my sanity, I said, "I want people to have to do a double take when I walk him because I want them to be unsure if I'm walking a bear, a small horse, or an unreasonably large dog." I got exactly what I wanted. My family continues to question my sanity, but they love my dog.

What a good dog, my old dog would’ve tore her to shreds if she tried any of this stuff. I loved my boxer-pitbull mutt, I’m still getting used to her not being here. At least she’s in a better place now, it broke my heart seeing her as sick as she was for the last few months.

I've wanted a St Bernard since I was little because of Peter Pan. I found one at a rescue nearby and I'm hoping to bring her home with me when I get the keys to my house and properly fence the yard.

@d hill We have an English Mastiff and St. Bermastiff. We have a bin of drool rags by back door when they come in from outside drinks. then few by table & couch. Visitors get a fresh rag at front door just in case of too much love.

I'm no longer a fan of having a cat (or two) locked inside an apartment all day long, let alone a dog this size! It sure would be nice to have the company of such animals, but only with what I think are the right and minimum conditions to receive and live with them, which basically means having at least some safe outdoor area around the house.

I used to have a Loving Giant St. Bernard. He weighed in at 225 lbs. He was so sweet. His name was Beauford. Sadly, Beauford lived only to eight years old. He used to nap every day like clock work from 11:00 till 1:00 in the afternoon. It was common to see our chickens, and or cat laying on top of him while he napped. Beauford will forever be in my heart. I imagine he is resting on the front porch of my house in heaven waiting for me. ❤

Our neighbors used to have one as well, ranging from 210-225 (depending on the season, he always pumped up during summer). We had a caucasian shepherd and they both loved each other. Our caucasian was roughly 180-190 lbs and was a really sweetheart. They used to be the neighborhood police in the local dogpark, whenever there were issues they ran over and just flipped the misbehaving dog over. The saint bernard was called Bronco and he was an absolute slobbering machine. Like you could see where he was resting by the puddles left everywhere.

and his tail will be wagging. It's a reason to be a good person; you won't meet your furbaby in hell.

we had a St. Bernard named missy that would do the same thing she would protect our chickens and our barn cat Tom that would cuddle with her to keep warm, but she would go absolutely go crazy if predators would be in the yard, she was no joke when it came to protecting our animals she would literally destroy anything that came in the yard and then leave it on our back porch...

He is beautiful 😍 I think he enjoyed his bath and grooming, just a sweetheart! My father used to breed German Shepards, but one day he took us to a farm, where this man had many different dog breeds there, and he had a Saint Bernard named Biscuit. My brothers and I played with Biscuit, rode him, and he didn't care what we did to him, he loved children. We begged my Dad to get this dog, and he almost gave in, but my Mom said no. I never forgot about Biscuit and that was 48 years ago. This dog reminds of Biscuit. Saint Bernards are some of the sweetest, gentle giants known to mankind, no wonder why they were bred to save people.

Glad to hear you love the big dogs. My wife and I have a Great Pyrenees named Cyrus. He's a rescue. We sort of did wake up one day and decide we would bring him into our home. He leapt into our hearts, taking up a lot of room, shedding like crazy and barking incessantly. Our groomer takes from 3-4 hours every time with zero issues. I commend you in your noble profession.

My girl is also a Great Pyrenees rescue. I hadn't really been aware of how big she would be as I got her during C19 & she was about 20 lbs under weight too. I didn't necessarily want a 🐴 but she's been the best addition to my family & warms my heart ♥ ❤❤❤

A friend of mine growing up had a St Bernard. If you sat on the sofa, get ready. You will be covered in slobber, but it's slobber of love. He was literally the biggest cuddle bug. And, he was so freaking heavy. He'd jump into your lap, and everyone gave an audible "oof" when he did.

Decades ago, our neighbors Saint Bernards got out of their yard. I was a teenager suddenly confronted by one of them bouncing at me. I was scared but all he wanted to do was play. It takes a lot of love to own one, between the fur and the droll. I mean that with respect and positivity.

I had a similar experience with a yellow lab. She lived across the street and got out one day and I was out in my yard as a kid playing with matchbox cars or whatever and I hear this panting behind me and turn to see her standing there wagging her tail. It was like she wanted to play but didn't want to interrupt.

The last time I saw my Bernie, he was asleep under the piano while my sister was practicing. It was his favorite nap spot when she was playing. That night he passed away in his sleep - the Vet said it looked like a grand-mal seizure (Common problem for his breed). Same day Princess Diana died. He was buried in the garden, under some roses. I still miss him.

That dog came in at 200 pounds, but he probably left at about 190. Seriously, you probably took enough fur off him to have a whole other dog there!

To weigh in on "the why we own big dogs" question; I believe we all just saw a large breed dog and just said "screw it, that's the dog". At least that's what happened with me. My mother's coworker had a St. Berdoodle that I met and that was it for me. I immediately paid to be one of the first picks in the next litter. I couldn't be more happy about my little big guy.

As a Great Pyrenees owner, it was by surprise that we were getting a mini pony as our FIRST dog. He was previously with a friend in the family, but when he moved across the country, the Great Pyrenees stayed with us since my sister and I knew him since he was 10 months old. At 8 years old 5 years later, he’s still the best decision we ever made❤

I know that this is a joke, but in all seriousness chihuahuas can naturally be very loving. Due to improper care, many chihuahuas seem monstrous. Behavior that would be unacceptable in larger dogs is tolerated in smaller dogs, and just like a child if they learn it's okay to act a certain way they might just do that.

I had a saint bernard he was 240 pounds he was adorable it was really funny he was scared of the smallest things like he'd jump back when he saw a turtle and when something bigger than him came around he acted like he was only 1 pound and sat on your lap lol he sadly passed away the day after christmas though its good to know if he had any problems that they were gone now because bigger dogs can grow faster than their heart does

My old neighbor had a several dogs as big as this. My personal favorite was named "Couch." His sister was named "Bould," (short for Boulder), and his little brother was named "Perry," named after William "The Refrigerator" Perry. Had the smallest little girl in the world. You'd see these three mountains wandering up and down the street, and you'd have to look real hard to see the top of her head somewhere in the middle.

Up the stairs, bam, through the bedroom door. Jumped onto the bed, breaking the bed. Then the adrenaline wore off--collapsed. Drag the dog downstairs on the bedclothes. Lifting him into their '70s "land yacht" station wagon, my friend got a hernia. House destroyed, covered in blood, bed ruined, car ruined with blood. Dog in vet for weeks--stitches and cast. Friend needed surgery. Total loss well over $50,000 in 1978 dollars! Some was covered by insurance. (Dog made full recovery! Bank account didn't. New '75 Buick estate wagon $5,000--Their house ~$40,000 in 1978) Me? I'm sticking with teacup poodles.
