@Patrick nice exaggeration, average cost w/o insurance is $2500, with surgery can reach $20k and up. which is why over 90% of americans have health insurance, many of which are receiving free coverage. £60,000 salary and you’re paying for that uncovered surgery every year in income tax, just so you can get your yearly checkup. around a $9,000 USD disparity in income tax for an american with the same salary, nearly 4 broken arms a year, a used Gallardo paid for every decade that an American saves compared to someone in the UK. $750 a month doesn't sound too appealing, or free, yet it's as simple as turning it into income tax, slapping on the label "free" healthcare, and yall start bragging as if you haven't been paying your entire life.

My guess about what's happening about the two explosions actually have two different solutions. -For the first one ( explosion in mid water) , it seems the metal sinked pretty straight, forming a column of vapor (as mentioned). When this "protective" column collapsed the water came in contact all at once on a way greater surface of still liquid metal. My guess is that this first explosion is just a violent expansion of new vapor. -For the second one the metal looked sprayed. So the vapor had more space and time to form. But the remaining heat of the sinking metal entering in contact with a small surface of cold glass was sufficient to create a strong glass dilation. Therefore creating high stress between heated glass and its own cold surroundings. ( Kind of the same tensions we can find in prince rupert's drops, but here the glass couldn't hold its balance and did just split appart ) Awesome work and vids, thanks for sharing all of this!

Thanks for a great "safety" video. Would adding Borax to the molten metal as they do in casting resolve the crusting effect? Also, it appears that if the molten metal is poured at just the right angle, and just the right speed, it forms a nice channel down into the water. And not breaking apart until it hit the bottom. After a long day of digging through other peoples schematics, this was wonderful.

My favorite moment in chemistry lab was during the years first experiment. We had to check different gases by putting a match under. Normal stuff. He specifically told us he would kick us out if we put the match all the way in and caused an explosion. Being a rebellious chemist I did just that. The glassware shot across the room and made a huge bang. The professor ran over to clean it up cursing at me, but then when he picked the glassware up and realized it was in perfect condition he said he’d never seen something like that in his life and from then on he liked me. Hahaha

Awesome video man! I think your completely right about the height and velocity making the difference. I believe that was definitely a proof of hypothesis. Only repeat experiments would solidify it. I think the velocity plays a key factor in when it explodes. When molten metal is submerged in water it vaporizes it instantly creating a chamber of water vapor around the molten metal. (Reference: leidenfrost effect) With the leidenfrost effect comes a pressure differential. When this pressure differential is contained...(by surrounding water) well then the pressure will continue to build until something gives. Water is incompressible so the molten metal implodes and breaks from a lump into crumbs that cool much faster and stop the leidenfrost effect, almost instantly, and then transferring all of the energy, built by pressure, back into the incompressable water only to meet the strength of the container it's in. This, of course, being the glass jar it was in. The energy has to go somewhere and you figured out how to time it just right to make it detonate at the bottom of the jar and blow it up. You ARE a mad scientist. Lol

20:16 I believe the jar explodes because of thermal shock. Thermal shock will occur if the metal gets isolated enough from the water with the water vapor that is created around the metal at a certain angle such that it prevents the metal from cooling enough such that it's still super hot when in contact with the glass.

The explosion seems to me to be the result of drastically different temperatures trying to reconcile an energy difference. The metal and water, whether by the loss of vapor bubble or contact with the glass, rapidly cool the metal and that energy exchange breaks the soft material into many smaller components. Go boom for cause the hot and cold touch.

Defenestration is the act of throwing someone or something out of a window. The term was coined around the time of an incident in Prague Castle in the year 1618 which became the spark that started the Thirty Years' War.

My thought is that the explosion happens due to internal stresses in the metal from cooling at different rates, much like breaking the tail on a Prince Rupert's Drop. Initially the metal is insulated by a pocket of steam, allowing the metal to cool slow enough that it solidifies and holds its shape, but with a stress gradient due to the outside cooling faster than the inside. Then the steam goes away and water contacts the outer layer, causing it to cool extremely rapidly, which creates stress fractures in the outer layer, and so all the tension built up in the crystalline structure of the metal from the initial cooling is released all at once

I have a theory on what's actually occuring here, and its a two phase occurrence. So basically we possibly have a case of Thermal Expansion or Contraction going on inside the glass do to the introduction of hot metal rapidly raising the temperature of the water. Unfortunately glass isn't a good thermal conductor so there's a bit of time "Lag" before expansion or contraction begins near the outside surface. The expansion or contraction puts significant strain on the glass. Then when the metal hits the bottom of the glass this large bubble around it suddenly expands at a rapid pace. This causing enough force on the side that's currently under strain to essentially cause something similar Thermal shock. Normally thermal shock can only occur when you pour a hot liquid into a ice cold glass, but since we have glass put under stress already from the rapid temperature change, the boiling of the liquid is enough to get the same effect. This is just a theory however, and I might be wrong.

I know this is an old vid, but my theory for the mishaps is that gold is heavier so it dropped to the bottom faster, you had the water level right in the first one, but the metal didnt sink fast and it wasnt a fast pour.

The crucibles you are currently using are good for silver, gold and aluminum. Copper likes to eat through the crucibles you are currently using. If you plan to melt any other metals like copper or iron you need to use graphite clay crucibles. You should constantly check on the copper because. The longer you leave it exposed to the high heat the higher chance you have all your metal oxidizing. You should use copper or aluminum instead of the tin. Because they're melting temperature is much higher than the tin’s.

@Rusdani Budi Wicaksono- Nah bro... you've failed to notice that what happened not only cracked the jar, but turned a lot of the metal into tiny grains that littered the counter along with the top and bottom of what was left of the jar. That was a violent release of the stress built up in the grain structure of the metal.

Vor year
Glen McGillivray
Glen McGillivray

@Phantom0fTheRouter well that is interesting. So there is a penalty to sudden chilling. Might explain somewhat the irregularities in the aluminum/water detonation. Sometimes it holds together, others it detonates.

Vor year
Rusdani Budi Wicaksono
Rusdani Budi Wicaksono

@Phantom0fTheRouter Honestly not much, like everyone mentioned below me, most kinetic energy came from water evaporation into steam. Even if it's contribute in shattering, most would have a big chunk with relatively low speed.

Vor year
Phantom0fTheRouter
Phantom0fTheRouter

@Glen McGillivray - yeah, where did anyone mention aluminum? But, the reasons behind the fragmentation that causes the increased surface area of just about any molten metal dropped straight into water is what we are getting at. Diffuse nucleation is interfered with, and this creates stresses in the crystalline structure, which shatter the drop nearly instantly as it passes its boundary temp going solid, while still experiencing external stressors that caused misalignment in the first place.

Vor year
Glen McGillivray
Glen McGillivray

@Phantom0fTheRouter if the aluminum fragmented.... There would be a cascading reaction due to the increased surface area. And form Aluminum oxide and hydroxide and halides..... And a detonation would occur. I wouldn't want to be standing next to his building when that happened, just in case of shrapnel. The energy generated by metal fragmenting is low. The kinetic energy generated from conversion of water liquid into steam powers steam turbines in most power plants around the world. A 20 fold increase in volume will do dangerous things to nearby people or objects. Also when water expands it has a habit of breaking nearby objects. So that is always fun. And metal that is not properly cooled has no tensile strength. Of course sudden shockwaves will pull it into lots of little bits.

The tin also cools down a lot faster and hence your bronze just cooled down quicker than the gold mixture which prevented the vapor bubble from forming and protecting the metal. As soon as the metal touched the much colder water. I think when the metal initially falls in, the heat it radiates vaporizes the water before actually touching it.
