JPEGMAFIA and Danny Brown come together with one of the strangest Rap Albums in years. They could have played it safe, but they didn't at all, and I love it.

i can't believe people in chat didnt like the beat for Garbage Pale Kids, it's genuinely my favorite beat of all time at this point

i dont get the hate for it either! not my favorite song by any means, but the beat is great and the best part of the song for me

It's seriously so good

Wait, seriously? That’s like the best beat on the whole thing. Couldn’t stop replaying that song after finishing the album.

i was in the bus on the way to the campus while hearing this, jpegmafia and danny are on whole another game, i was so blown away. Peggy must be one of the most talented producers of these 2 decades.

Nah it’s because being a Peggy enjoyer gives you music reviewer cred 😂 I am also guilty of liking music reviewer music just because they liked it
Vor 6 MonateGolden Grin +1
Yeah 8/10 his original take was perfict imo, im not saying this album doesn't go HARD nah its not a 7 that is too low
Vor 5 Monatebraindeadmonkee +910
6:00 danny is saying this not as a “bring back the good ol’ days where autotune was everywhere!”, but more as a meta-referential quip on the idea that most mainstream listeners are not going to be used to this abrasive and abstract style/aesthetic. i understand and share the sentiment that this line was a little corny, but not because it sounds like an “oldhead boomer” take, it sounds more like a “we’re unique and edgy” take
Vor 6 MonateBrad Taste In Music +338
Good take
Vor 6 Monate%killername% +9
Good take indeed
Vor 6 MonateThe Wild King +25
I didnt think it was corny but yea i thought it was pretty obvious that general consumers need “autotune” and the conformity of artists
Vor 6 MonateAdam Lagerqvist +16
I also think that whole is song is irony or satire and is clowning on all the people who unironicly think they are not "like all the other boys" because they have a "unique music taste".

From what I understand Danny was having a hard time with alcoholism at the beginning of the project and it was difficult for them to get through songs. Part way through the project Danny was sober and was able to deliver much better (this is at least what I heard from one of Dannys podcasts). The songs definitely reflect that imo, and its cool they left the songs as they were rather than re-did them after Danny stopped drinking.
Vor 6 MonateQQucci +60
Or maybe I am wrong and its the opposite way around and all the best songs were the ones where he was drunk xD
Vor 6 Monatesavestate13 +47
Either way, I hope Danny is doing much better than the way he described himself to be

Vor 3 MonateThe Wild King +142
I disagree about the mixing take, it occasionally makes danny sound like an instrument and i think its what makes it so good. Such a good album
Vor 6 Monatee7i _ +426
I actually find myself really enjoying the muddy mixes on this project. It feels like a revival of DIY in that they are less focused on the studio level mix, and more into focusing on the creativity and heart of the music. I also will never pass up an excuse to focus on Jpegmafias revolutionary production. I also want to throw in that while some songs are absolutely imbalanced in terms of danny and peggys verse lengths, but i genuinely appreciate when artists have the maturity to step back and let their collaborator take the forefront on a song that they feel that person rocks more than they would.
Vor 6 Monateb_delta +24
Exactly i don't think you can really blame the mixing, its not for everyone but Jpeg was clearly going for this sound
Vor 6 MonateMank Hobley +2
Me too
Vor 6 MonateCoaster Craziness +4
Yeah I agree, the mixing is a good stylistic choice imo
Vor 6 Monatesavestate13 +5
Pinning the shoddy mixes on a "DIY aesthetic" doesn't really erase them for me. Both of these artists are extremely detail-oriented, which, for me, pushes it from "potentiality intentional" to just plain weird. Edit: I did really enjoy this album tho, definitely an AOTY contender for me right now.
Vor 6 Monatestwish +6
@savestate13 weird or not, listening to Peggy's other work I'd say it's def intentional
Vor 6 MonateTheRiGuy AyyLmao +69
This album is ridiculously good. It’s like ADHD-core but so well put together. The fact that a song will switch beats like six times but they all work together is just really enjoyable and keeps you interested waiting for what’ll happen next
Vor 6 MonateKrona
ADHD-core? Never heard of it You got any recommendations?
Vor 4 MonateTheRiGuy AyyLmao
@Krona not an actual sub-genre as far as I know it’s just the best way I could think to describe this album
Vor 4 MonateRyland Carlyle +88
I think Danny's inclusion was good but I really wanna see a Denzel Curry + JPEG project. I feel like Denzel's rapping would be so fun over JPEG's mixing. I mean they could even do some triple threat and throw JID in there that would be too good tho.
Vor 6 Monatekm606x +24

Vor 6 MonateRuuan +9

Vor 5 MonateAlex Martinelli

Vor 3 MonateNuova Wright +10
Poet nerd conspiracy theory: this album’s mixing and production are completely intentional. And they’re done that way to actually highlight and elevate Danny, who Peggy is pretty open about deeply admiring as an artist. The mixing makes you keep seeking out Danny’s vocals. I remember being super off-put by them the first time I heard this album, especially for the first few songs. By the middle of the album Danny’s voice is what I was always listening for! I feel like on almost every beat, Peggy figures out a way to draw you in to everything Danny is saying, and creating moments of frustration with the mix so you wanna hear him again and again. Which I was doing completely by “Steppa Pig.” And then Kingdom Heart Key is just this beautiful sonic ritual where two older gens of rappers hold up this young artist to shine light on his taken. I kept replaying this song to hear redveil. Anyway, that’s my goofy, artsy theory ✌🏼
Vor 2 Monateshamanic nostalgia +81
JPEG is officially GOAT status He's a Kanye/Kendrick level talent
Vor 6 Monateictogon +24
peggys lyrics fit his style I think, but you would never hear Kendrick rapping about white boys being mean to him on twitter lmao
Vor 5 Monatekingamer1234 +1
Relax there bud. Kendrick makes art on another level and tells stories. Like the rock greats. Peggy is just a brilliant producer.
Vor 4 MonateSamuel Demetriades +2

Vor 2 MonateSIKEboi699 +7
@kingamer1234 artists dont have to deliver dense lyricism and social issues to get to another "level". peggy is on ye/kenny level without doubt
Vor MonatI. Her +31
the absolute rawness and passion that jpegmafia has for his music definitely shined thru this album. two titans of fringe hip hop on the same project is insane
Vor 6 MonateJeremy U's ReevU +101
Just heard this album. I'm with Brad, this is awesome. I don't have a ton of expereince with Brown or JPEG, but Scaring The Hoes is such a unique, versatile, crazy project that does so many things and succeeds at all of them, supported by stellar production, great vocals, and unique lyrics. My personal favorite tracks are Lean Beef Patty, Fentanyl Tester, Garbage Pale Kids, and Jack Harlow Combo Meal. Also, Hotel Ugly just released their new album, Ugly Duck. Check it out, it's really cool!
Vor 6 MonateImpendingRiot83 +9
Deep dive into both Peggy and Danny, they are well worth it, and if you want to get into the deeper cuts with Peggy check out the Devon Hendryx alias stuff from before JPEGMAFIA, my guy kinda literally invented Vaporwave a little bit on the Ghost Pop Tape, it was a few years before any of the big “first example” names and before the genre was named too. Acid-drenched plunderphonics. So good.
Vor 6 MonateJeremy U's ReevU +5
@ImpendingRiot83 Cool. I'll definitely do that
Vor 6 Monateyung uboa +11
@ImpendingRiot83 you're confusing ghost pop tape with dreamcast summer songs. dreamcast summer songs is the album that's credited with "inventing vaporwave" and was released the same year as floral shoppe (2011)
Vor 6 MonateConner Ulozas +163
Is it me or the version dropped on music platforms was way better on the mixing than the YouTube one and it made me enjoy a lot more
Vor 6 Monatepineapple time +62
Probably the youtube compression or compression from when they ripped it
Vor 6 MonateWesley +32
Not only was this on Youtube, but it was a ripped version from another platform. lol
Vor 6 MonateBilly Mays +9
@SCBi love listening to only the mids of a song
Vor 6 MonateMaaz Waseem +2
For me both were identical. The mixing is crap on both
Vor 6 MonatePJ Homik +9
Yeah I don't really get why one would watch a rip on YouTube and then complain about the mixing. I was also disappointed by lean beef patty when it was released, but the album version on Spotify fixed any issues I had with it.
Vor 6 MonateCocali +261
This album was fucking nuts... Now all we need is a Death Grips collab.
Vor 6 MonateBETTY +50
Jpeg wouldn't want to do that though, sadly😢.

@BETTY why so
Vor 6 MonateSteve Mojang +61

its somehow even better than i expected it to be. its amazing. worth the wait. peggy’s production is UNREAL
Vor 6 MonateCoaster Craziness +1
My expectations were too high for them to be exceeded but I knew that going into it. I love this thing regardless but I should’ve had more realistic expectations
Vor 6 MonateJason Schon +25
God Loves You is the best beat on the record. Maybe even the best song. It blew my mind and has soooo much soul. I haven’t felt that way about a track in a minute.
Vor 6 MonateEd XXIII +7
I love how this album is getting near universal critical acclaim. Peggy and Danny never dissapoint
Vor 5 MonateThe_Algae28 173
Lateralus.
Vor 2 MonateThoth +75
For me Lean Beef Patty was perfect as a lead single, my expectations were sky high and it basically tempered them, especially with Danny kinda taking a back seat in the project overall which is what we heard on LBP. Not saying I'm disappointed or this is the best they could've done, but it's more of a vibe than some huge groundbreaking collab.
Vor 6 Monategabonis +17
This should replace WTT for the standard for collab projects in hip hop. Great chemistry, great production, everyone at their peak
Vor 6 MonateWay Too Andrew +26
So cool to see an album actually live up to the hype. Burfict! is gonna be a huge hit among peggy fans
Vor 6 MonateHolger Larsson +13
“The jack harlow chicken” and the “bitch like the army” line among others just gave me real laugh out loud moments at my first listen! Just that alone is hard to do and deserves some credit. Balls to the walls album, not too familiar with either Jpeg or Danny but enjoyed this a lot!
Vor 5 MonateSpicy Oreos74 +26
I like how Peggy takes production styles from all of his past 3 albums, you can hear the instrumentation from LP! On many songs and other songs have the melodies from all my heroes are cornballs, and a lot of the songs are just as experimental in their sound as veteran. I think this was intentional as he also brought back the producer tag from veteran and the “I like jpegs” thing from cornballs. You can totally listen to every beat and locate exactly which Peggy album or even song it has the same style and instrumentation as.
Vor 6 MonateSpicy Oreos74 +1
This is my first time making a long ass YouTube comment how did I do
Vor 6 MonateSpicy Oreos74 +1
Like some of the gospel elements of LP!
Vor 6 MonateSpicy Oreos74 +1
That one part in Peggy’s verse in the Jack Harlow song is straight out of all my heroes are cornballs
Vor 6 MonateCirphlyx +8
important to mention is that jpegmafia produced this with an SP404 rather than a DAW. obviously with the magic of modern sampling there's a lot he can do, but the fact that he was using production tools from 2005 shows how insane this album is
Vor 5 MonateTheObicobiHD +6
Was so happy to see this project drop, JPEGMAFIA is always a joy to hear and Danny Brown is so versatile and skilled. Really loved this album, Peggy's production keeps getting more insane and impressive. Crazy, fun, absurd, already on repeat

Vor 5 MonateALL- CAPS +9
one of the best albums I've ever heard. Just jaw-dropping production
Vor 6 Monatesavestate13 +9
The mix on this record isn't to be pushed aside. This album is undeniably amazing, but a mix this spotty coming from two extremely detail-oriented artists such as Peggy and Danny is just plain weird.
Vor 6 Monatemikef55 +2
My favourite song on this album is Garbage Pale Kids, it just has the most Danny Brown 1-liners and I'm all here for it 😭 also the production goes hard & Peggy's flows are insane
Vor 4 MonateIolZ +3
I completely agree with your take about how this sounds like a fucked up 80s movie. Some of the tracks here (RTJ, WYGYCF?, etc.) sound like something straight out of pulp fiction. Makes me picture Peggy and Danny in the roles of John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson.
Vor 2 MonateJillion Jangles
This the kind of album where you don’t need to understand what they saying cuz it sounds so good and is such a good vibe
Vor 29 TageDominic J. +52

Everything about this album is insane usually albums get sluggish for me after 4-5 tracks in once you hit the mid point but this album kept me hooked the entire way through and it just felt like the quality kept improving as the album went on.

the main issue i have with this album is how little it feels like a collab. danny never returns for a second verse and there's never a back and forth. It almost feels like a jpegmafia album with posthumous danny brown features

At first I was gonna say something about Brad not listening to the album on spotify and that the youtube version was gonna ruin it, but nah just some minor mixing differences. Fantastic album Once you embrace the madness of the music its just a flawless tracklist of bangers
Vor 6 Monatelogan carlson +28
I have no doubts in my mind that they enjoyed making this. That video of Danny yelling seals the deal
Vor 6 Monatebladewrks +17
Even though some awful pop songs have come out this month, today alone we got Peggy x Danny, Quinn, and Navy Blue off the top of my head so that makes up for it imo
Vor 6 Monatebladewrks +3
also I'm sure Brad has realized already but I wouldn't review leaks since the streaming version has at least minor differences and better mixing 90% of the time

Vor 5 Monatemirtilo +2
@Nick Simons I reckon i would stop loving it so much if everytime i was done listening to a song i had to find something to complain about, honestly. Like when I listened to the album i just enjoyed the experience, as oppose to complain about the mixing on every interval possible, but to each their own.

Off first listen I definitely liked it, loved tracks such as garbage pale kids, burfict!, and kingdom hearts. But after second listen everything just snapped into place for me. Vor 6 MonateYung Goblin +1
Danny is my favorite rapper, so maybe I'm biased, but must say that I love how the songs give both these guys time to shine.
Vor 6 MonateImpendingRiot83 +5
Cosmic brain moment for me right now: This album almost acts as Peggy and Danny’s answer (in spirit, not in any direct way, just follow with my logic here) to Open Mike Eagle’s ‘Component System With the Auto Reverse’; *_pure, raw, unfiltered “mixtape made with your best friend(s) and colleague(s)” energy._* It’s that same concept but coming from different perspectives, eras and, for lack of better phrasing, regions. The OME record was very much a laid back, just-put-on-that-beat-and-spit celebration and send-up of his history with local rap scenes like Project Blowed, his involvement in Hellfyre Club (which I urge everyone to look at if you like OME, Milo or Busdriver) and the particular era and the experience of it, while ‘Scaring the Hoes’ is that for “weird, crazy” internet rappers like Peggy and Danny that came up doing purely their own thing and forging their own niche in the game by catching so much attention and lasting audience retention for how creative and out there they are during what kinda feels like the absolute _height_ of the internet’s Wild West days of music. It’s why I kinda “forgive” some of the flaws that I do agree are there and connect more with the tempo of the flows, the beats, the speedy and hectic jumps from idea to idea that build a kind of fun momentum, especially in the car.
Vor 6 MonateJi +5

Vor 6 MonateKaleb Lougher
Honestly the mixing makes me feel it's more like a 7.5 8 to me but still a great album
Vor 6 MonateKR P +5
Much of this was done on a 404, which apparently compresses vocals into the rest of the mix aggressively. That said, this is gonna be hard to top for aoty for me.
Vor 6 MonateHorseradish +2
I seriously disagree with your take on Danny Brown. His flows are on point as always and matches these beats PERFECTLY. Especially the most chaotic songs like Where’s Ya Get Ya Coke From? and Run The Jewels. I found Jpeg also blends into the beats a lot, for example on Burfict! he is DROWNED by the beat and both sound more like instruments than a centre focus

I mean Peggy said that Danny was pretty drunk for most recordings then one day came into the studio sober and recorded like 7 songs. I think the songs he’s being outshined are the times he was coked up and drunk

Personally, I strongly believe this project could not have been done without Danny. I feel like his energy is just different to Peggy’s, and that’s not a bad thing at all. I think they bounce off each other very well (Besides Lean Beef Patty and Steppa Pig. The mixes aren’t doing Danny justice either.)

Amazing album. Eagerly awaiting the disappointment of Fantano's 6/10 rating EDIT: Hot DAMN, am I happy to be wrong!
Vor 6 MonateStratford +1
Fantano will give it a 7 or a 3
Vor 6 MonateJeremy U's ReevU
I swear to god if Fantano gives this a lower score than that godawful Yeat album...

I’m surprised people aren’t very critical of this album cuz the clipping on some of these songs is kinda crazy

"Where the auto tune at" is meant to be sarcastic. The whole concept of the song is how they keep making songs that are "Scaring the Hoes". So in line with that concept, Danny Brown is calling out main stream cliche tropes, such as auto-tune. He's saying it as if he's a main stream rapper, "yo, where the auto-tune at?"

danny brown isnt like other girls

This kind of reminds me of IGN reviewing the latest Call of Duty or Mario game where they just endlessly point out its flaws then give it a 9.0 and say “it has a little bit of something for everyone”

This was the first stream I tuned into, fun stream for a great album!

Both the streaming version (on Qobuz at least) and the bandcamp version have a much improved mix for Lean Beef Patty versus this Youtube vid

Calling your viewers "hoes" and sending threats to them just so you can scare them for 27 minutes straight doesn't count as a review, Brad

this album isn't anything i'd loop but i was so into it just for the wrestling references
